RESUMEN

Background: Viscoelastic assays have widely been used for evaluating coagulopathies but lack the addition of shear stress important to in vivo clot formation. Stasys technology subjects whole blood to shear forces over factor-coated surfaces. Microclot formation is analyzed to determine clot area (CA) and platelet contractile forces (PCFs). We hypothesize the CA and PCF from this novel assay will provide information that correlates with trauma-induced coagulopathy and transfusion requirements. Methods: Blood samples were collected on adult trauma patients from a single-institution prospective cohort study of high-level activations. Patient and injury characteristics, transfusion data, and outcomes were collected. Thromboelastography, coagulation studies, and Stasys assays were run on paired samples collected at admission. Stasys CA and PCFs were quantified as area under the curve calculations and maximum values. Normal ranges for Stasys assays were determined using healthy donors. Data were compared using Kruskal-Wallis tests and simple linear regression. Results: From March 2021 to January 2023, 108 samples were obtained. Median age was 37.5 (IQR 27.5-52) years; patients were 77% male. 71% suffered blunt trauma, 26% had an Injury Severity Score of ≥25. An elevated international normalized ratio significantly correlated with decreased cumulative PCF (p=0.05), maximum PCF (p=0.05) and CA (p=0.02). Lower cumulative PCF significantly correlated with transfusion of any products at 6 and 24 hours (p=0.04 and p=0.05) as well as packed red blood cells (pRBCs) at 6 and 24 hours (p=0.04 and p=0.03). A decreased maximum PCF showed significant correlation with receiving any transfusion at 6 (p=0.04) and 24 hours (p=0.02) as well as transfusion of pRBCs, fresh frozen plasma, and platelets in the first 6 hours (p=0.03, p=0.03, p=0.03, respectively). Conclusions: Assessing coagulopathy in real time remains challenging in trauma patients. In this pilot study, we demonstrated that microfluidic approaches incorporating shear stress could predict transfusion requirements at time of admission as well as requirements in the first 24 hours. Background and Objectives: Omigapil is a small molecule which inhibits the GAPDH-Siah1-mediated apoptosis pathway. Apoptosis is a pathomechanism underlying the congenital muscular dystrophy subtypes LAMA2-related dystrophy (LAMA2-RD) and COL6-related dystrophy (COL6-RD). Studies of omigapil in the (dyw/dyw) LAMA2-RD mouse model demonstrated improved survival, and studies in the (dy2J/dy2J) LAMA2-RD mouse model and the (Col6a1-/-) COL6-RD mouse model demonstrated decreased apoptosis. Methods: A phase 1 open-label, sequential group, ascending oral dose, cohort study of omigapil in patients with LAMA2-RD or COL6-RD ages 5-16 years was performed (1) to establish the pharmacokinetic (PK) profile of omigapil at a range of doses, (2) to evaluate the safety and tolerability of omigapil at a range of doses, and (3) to establish the feasibility of conducting disease-relevant clinical assessments. Patients were enrolled in cohorts of size 4, with each patient receiving 4 weeks of vehicle run-in and 12 weeks of study drug (at daily doses ranging from 0.02 to 0.08 mg/kg). PK data from each cohort were analyzed before each subsequent dosing cohort was enrolled. A novel, adaptive dose-finding method (stochastic approximation with virtual observation recursion) was used to allow for dose escalation/reduction between cohorts based on PK data. Results: Twenty patients were enrolled at the NIH (LAMA2-RD: N = 10; COL6-RD: N = 10). Slightly greater than dose-proportional increases in systemic exposure to omigapil were seen at doses 0.02-0.08 mg/kg/d. The dose which achieved patient exposure within the pre-established target area under the plasma concentration-vs-time curve (AUC0-24h) range was 0.06 mg/kg/d. In general, omigapil was safe and well tolerated. No consistent changes were seen in the disease-relevant clinical assessments during the duration of the study. Discussion: This study represents the thus far only clinical trial of a therapeutic small molecule for LAMA2-RD and COL6-RD, completed with an adaptive trial design to arrive at dose adjustments. The trial met its primary end point and established that the PK profile of omigapil is suitable for further development in pediatric patients with LAMA2-RD or COL6-RD, the most common forms of congenital muscular dystrophy. While within the short duration of the study disease-relevant clinical assessments did not demonstrate significant changes, this study establishes the feasibility of performing interventional clinical trials in these rare disease patient populations. BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is highly prevalent and associated with opioid use disorder (OUD). Yet, little is known about the mechanisms by which ADHD (which is a heterogeneous construct/diagnosis) might alter the trajectory of OUD outcomes in persons who use heroin. AIM: We examined whether ADHD subtypes are related to heroin-use consequences and the extent to which the effects of ADHD on lifetime heroin-use consequences are mediated by two impulsivity factors that may be partly independent of ADHD: foreshortened time perspective and drug-use impulsivity. METHODS: Individuals who reported regular heroin use (N=250) were screened using the Assessment of Hyperactivity and Attention (AHA), Impulsive Relapse Questionnaire (IRQ), Stanford Time Perception Inventory (STPI), and a comprehensive assessment of lifetime and current substance use and substance-related consequences. This secondary analysis examined whether ADHD or intermediate phenotypes predicted heroin-use consequences. RESULTS: Relative to participants whose AHA scores indicated lifetime absence of ADHD (n=88), those with scores indicating persistent ADHD (childhood and adult, n=62) endorsed significantly more total lifetime heroin-use consequences despite comparable heroin-use severity. Likewise, there was a significant indirect effect of the combined ADHD subtype in childhood on lifetime heroin-use consequences. This effect was mediated by STPI scores indicating less future (and more hedonism in the present) temporal orientation and by IRQ scores indicating less capacity for delaying drug use. CONCLUSION: The combined ADHD subtype is significantly associated with lifetime heroin-use consequences, and this effect is mediated through higher drug-use impulsivity (less capacity for delay) and lower future temporal orientation.

Adjuvant radiation can also be considered for local control.

BACKGROUND: Self-management of opioid use disorder (OUD) is an important component of treatment. Many patients receiving opioid agonist treatment in methadone maintenance treatment settings benefit from counseling treatments to help them improve their recovery skills but have insufficient access to these treatments between clinic appointments. In addition, many addiction medicine clinicians treating patients with OUD in a general medical clinic setting do not have consistent access to counseling referrals for their patients. This can lead to decreases in both treatment retention and overall progress in the patient's recovery from substance misuse. Digital apps may help to bridge this gap by coaching, supporting, and reinforcing behavioral change that is initiated and directed by their psychosocial and medical providers. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to conduct an acceptability, usability, and utility pilot study of the KIOS app to address these clinical needs. METHODS: We developed a unique, patient-centered computational software system (KIOS; Biomedical Development Corporation) to assist in managing OUD in an outpatient, methadone maintenance clinic setting. KIOS tracks interacting self-reported symptoms (craving, depressed mood, anxiety, irritability, pain, agitation or restlessness, difficulty sleeping, absenteeism, difficulty with usual activities, and conflicts with others) to determine changes in both the trajectory and severity of symptom patterns over time. KIOS then applies a proprietary algorithm to assess the individual's patterns of symptom interaction in accordance with models previously established by OUD experts. After this analysis, KIOS provides specific behavioral advice addressing the individual's changing trajectory of symptoms to help the person self-manage their symptoms. The KIOS software also provides analytics on the self-reported data that can be used by patients, clinicians, and researchers to track outcomes. RESULTS: In a 4-week acceptability, usability (mean System Usability Scale-Modified score 89.5, SD 9.2, maximum of 10.0), and utility (mean KIOS utility questionnaire score 6.32, SD 0.25, maximum of 7.0) pilot study of 15 methadone-maintained participants with OUD, user experience, usability, and software-generated advice received high and positive assessment scores. The KIOS clinical variables closely correlated with craving self-report measures. Therefore, managing these variables with advice generated by the KIOS software could have an impact on craving and ultimately substance use. CONCLUSIONS: KIOS tracks key clinical variables and generates advice specifically relevant to the patient's current and changing clinical state. Patients in this pilot study assigned high positive values to the KIOS user experience, ease of use, and the appropriateness, relevance, and usefulness of the specific behavioral guidance they received to match their evolving experiences. KIOS may therefore be useful to augment in-person treatment of opioid agonist patients and help fill treatment gaps that currently exist in the continuum of care. A National Institute on Drug Abuse-funded randomized controlled trial of KIOS to augment in-person treatment of patients with OUD is currently being conducted.

Background: Factors that predict attempts to discontinue drug use are clinically relevant and may inform treatment. This study investigated drug use-related consequences as a predictor of drug quit attempts and treatment seeking among two cohorts of persons who use drugs. Methods: Drug use and clinical characteristics were assessed among persons who use cocaine (N=176; urine-verified; 'Cocaine Cohort') and among those who use heroin (N=166; urine-verified; 'Heroin Cohort'). Mediation analyses assessed relationships among age at initial drug use, adverse drug-specific use-related consequences, and drug-specific quit attempts, separately for each cohort. Forward conditional logistic regression models evaluated drug use and clinical symptom scores as predictors of drug-specific treatment seeking. Results: Controlling for age, mediation models showed that drug use consequences fully mediated the relationship between age at initial drug use and number of drug-specific quit attempts for the 'Cocaine Cohort' and 'Heroin Cohort' (R2=0.30, p<.001; R2=0.17, p<.001; respectively). Reporting more consequences predicted more quit attempts in each cohort, accounting for duration of use (ps<.001). Reporting more consequences also predicted greater likelihood of seeking drug use treatment (ps<.001) and was associated with more severe clinical symptoms in each cohort (ps<.05). Conclusions: Using a parallel analysis design, we showed that reporting more drug-specific use-related consequences predicted more drug-specific quit attempts and greater likelihood to seek treatment in two cohorts: persons who use cocaine and those who use heroin. Our findings suggest that experiencing more drug use consequences predicts more attempts to seek drug abstinence and that assessment of consequences may be informative for treatment.

Acute neuromuscular disorders occasionally occur in the Pediatric Neurologic Intensive Care Unit. Many of these are primary disorders of the motor unit that may present acutely or exacerbate during an intercurrent illness. Additionally, acute neuromuscular disorders may develop during an acute systemic illness requiring intensive care management that predispose the child to another set of acute motor unit disorders. This chapter discusses acute neuromuscular crises in the infant, toddler, and adolescent, as well as neuromuscular disorders resulting from critical illness.

People use electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) for many reasons, but currently there are no comprehensive assessments of the motivations for tobacco vaping. The aim of the present study is to develop and test the initial construct validity of a new measure to assess reasons for e-cigarette use. We developed a 56-item measure based on the e-cigarette literature. This measure, along with demographic and tobacco use questions, was administered to adults who self-identified as past or present e-cigarette users on the Prolific crowdsourcing platform. The sample (n = 965) was randomly assigned into two analytic groups for exploratory factor analysis (EFA; n = 484) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA; n = 481). The sample ranged from 19 to 77 (M = 36.6; SD = 11.5) years old, and 42.2% identified as women, 74.6% as White, 7.2% as African American, 4.7% as Asian/Pacific Islander, and 5.1% Hispanic/Latino. After removing highly correlated items and nonloading items on the EFA, the 56-item scale was reduced to 47 items across eight factors. The eight subscales assessing various motivation domains of e-cigarette use included social influence, alternative to cigarettes, pleasurable effects, harm reduction, dependence, cessation, weight/appetite, and smell/flavor domains. Cronbach's α coefficients and preliminary analyses of differential motivation based on sex, age, and daily smoker status are presented. This study demonstrates the construct validity for the first comprehensive measure tested to assess reasons for e-cigarette use. This measure has potential to become a valuable assessment for researchers examining factors contributing to tobacco vaping among a variety of populations and settings. PURPOSE: Collaborations between basic science educators (BE) and clinical educators (CE) in medical education are common and necessary to create integrated learning materials. However, few studies describe experiences of or processes used by educators engaged in interdisciplinary teamwork. We use the lens of boundary crossing to explore processes described by BE and CE that support the co-creation of integrated learning materials, and the impact that this work has on them. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted qualitative content analysis on program evaluation data from 27 BE and CE who worked on 12 teams as part of a multi-institutional instructional design project. RESULTS: BE and CE productively engaged in collaboration using boundary crossing mechanisms. These included respecting diverse perspectives and expertise and finding efficient processes for completing shared work that allow BE and CE to build on each other's contributions. BE and CE developed confidence in connecting clinical concepts with causal explanations, and willingness to engage in and support such collaborations at their own institutions. CONCLUSIONS: BE and CE report the use of boundary crossing mechanisms that support collaboration in instructional design. Such practices could be harnessed in future collaborations between BE and CE.

INTRODUCTION: The output of scholarly publications in scientific literature has increased exponentially in recent years. This increase in literature has been accompanied by an increase in retractions. Although some of these may be attributed to publishing errors, many are the result of unsavory research practices. The purposes of this study were to identify the number of retracted articles in nursing and reasons for the retractions, analyze the retraction notices, and determine the length of time for an article in nursing to be retracted. DESIGN: This was an exploratory study. METHODS: A search of PubMed/MEDLINE, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and Retraction Watch databases was conducted to identify retracted articles in nursing and their retraction notices. RESULTS: Between 1997 and 2022, 123 articles published in the nursing literature were retracted. Ten different reasons for retraction were used to categorize these articles with one-third of the retractions (n = 37, 30.1%) not specifying a reason. Sixty-eight percent (n = 77) were retracted because of an actual or a potential ethical concern: duplicate publication, data issues, plagiarism, authorship issues, and copyright. CONCLUSION: Nurses rely on nursing-specific scholarly literature as evidence for clinical decisions. The findings demonstrated that retractions are increasing within published nursing literature. In addition, it was evident that retraction notices do not prevent previously published work from being cited. This study addressed a gap in knowledge about article retractions specific to nursing.

Background: Cannabis is the most used federally illicit substance among pregnant people in the United States. However, emerging preclinical data show that a significant portion of cannabis constituents, such as Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol and its bioactive metabolites, readily cross the placenta and accumulate in the fetal brain, disrupting neurodevelopment. Recent research using the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study cohort has linked prenatal cannabis exposure (PCE) to greater neurobehavioral problems and lower total gray and white matter volume in children. Here, we examined the impact of PCE on frontolimbic white matter pathways that are critical for cognitive- and emotion-related functioning, show a high density of cannabinoid receptors, and are susceptible to cannabis exposure during other periods of rapid neurodevelopment (e.g., adolescence). Methods: This study included 11,530 children (mean ± SD age = 118.99 ± 7.49 months; 47% female) from the ABCD Study cohort. Linear mixed-effects models were used to examine the effects of caregiver-reported PCE on fractional anisotropy of 10 frontolimbic pathways (5 per hemisphere). Results: PCE was associated with lower fractional anisotropy of the right (ß = -0.005, p < .001) and left (ß = -0.003, p = .007) fornix, and these results remained significant after adjusting for a variety of covariates, multiple comparisons, fractional anisotropy of all fibers, and using a quality-control cohort only. Conclusions: In sum, we demonstrated small, yet reliable, effects of PCE on white matter integrity during childhood, particularly in the fornix, which plays a crucial role in emotion- and memory-related processes. Future studies are needed to understand the impacts of small changes in brain structure or function on neurodevelopment and risk of neurobehavioral problems.

OBJECTIVE: This article provides an overview of hereditary neuropathies, describes the different hereditary neuropathy subtypes and the clinical approach to differentiating between them, and summarizes their clinical management. LATEST DEVELOPMENTS: Increasingly available clinical genetic testing has broadened the clinical spectrum of hereditary neuropathy subtypes and demonstrated a significant overlap of phenotypes associated with a single gene. New subtypes such as SORD -related neuropathy and CANVAS (cerebellar ataxia, neuropathy, vestibular areflexia syndrome) have emerged. The optimization of clinical management has improved gait and motor function in the adult and pediatric populations. Novel therapeutic approaches are entering clinical trials. ESSENTIAL POINTS: Hereditary neuropathies constitute a spectrum of peripheral nerve disorders with variable degrees of motor and sensory symptoms, patterns of involvement, and clinical courses.

Background: Antiretroviral medications have increased the lifespan of persons living with HIV (PLWH) thereby unmasking memory decline that may be attributed to chronological age, HIV symptomatology, HIV disease chronicity, and/or substance use (especially cannabis use which is common among PLWH). To date, few studies have attempted to disentangle these effects. In a sample of daily cannabis-using PLWH, we investigated whether hippocampal memory function, assessed via an object-location associative learning task, was associated with age, HIV chronicity and symptom severity, or substance use. Methods: 48 PLWH (12.9 ± 9.6 years since HIV diagnosis), who were 44 years old on average (range: 24-64 years; 58 % male) and reported daily cannabis use (recent use confirmed by urinalysis) completed the study. We assessed each participant's demographics, substance use, medical history, current HIV symptoms, and hippocampal memory function via a well-validated object-location associative learning task. Results: Multiple regression analyses found that living more years since HIV+ diagnosis predicted significantly worse associative learning total score (r=-0.40) and learning rate (r=-0.34) whereas chronological age, cannabis-use characteristics, and recent HIV symptom severity were not significantly related to hippocampal memory function. Conclusions: In daily cannabis-using PLWH, HIV chronicity was related to worse hippocampal memory function independent from cannabis use, age, and HIV symptomatology. Object-location associative learning performance could serve as an 'early-warning' metric of cognitive decline among PLWH. Future research should examine longitudinal changes in associative learning proficiency and evaluate interventions to prevent hippocampal memory decline among PLWH. ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT01536899.

The purpose of this secondary analysis was to determine what portion of the effects of a Diabetes Prevention Program-like intervention on metabolic syndrome (MetS) could be achieved with exercise alone, as well as to determine the relative importance of exercise intensity and amount to the total exercise effect on MetS. Sedentary, overweight adults with prediabetes were randomly assigned to one of four 6-month interventions: 1) low-amount/moderate-intensity (10 kcal/kg/week at 50% peak V˙O2); 2) high-amount/moderate-intensity (16 kcal/kg/week at 50% peak V˙O2); 3) high-amount/vigorous-intensity (16 kcal/kg/week at 75% peak V˙O2); or 4) diet (7% weight loss) plus low-amount/moderate-intensity (10 kcal/kg/week at 50% peak V˙O2). The primary outcome of this secondary analysis was change in the MetS z-score. A total of 130 participants had complete data for all five Adult Treatment Panel (ATP) III MetS criteria. The diet-and-exercise group statistically outperformed the MetS z-score and the ATP III score compared to the exercise alone group. Aerobic exercise alone achieved 24%-50% of the total effect of the combined diet-and-exercise intervention on the MetS score. Low-amount moderate-intensity exercise quantitatively performed equal to or better than the interventions of high-amount moderate-intensity or high-amount vigorous-intensity exercise in improving the MetS score. The combined diet-and-exercise intervention remains more efficacious in improving the MetS z-score. However, all three exercise interventions alone showed improvements in the MetS z-score, suggesting that a modest amount of moderate-intensity exercise is all that is required to achieve approximately half the effect of a diet-and-exercise intervention on the MetS. BACKGROUND: Predatory publishers and their associated journals have been identified as a threat to the integrity of the scientific literature. Research on the phenomenon of predatory publishing in health care remains unquantified. PURPOSE: To identify the characteristics of empirical studies on predatory publishing in the health care literature. METHODS: A scoping review was done using PubMed/MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Scopus databases. A total of 4967 articles were initially screened; 77 articles reporting empirical findings were ultimately reviewed. RESULTS: The 77 articles were predominantly bibliometric analyses/document analyses (n = 56). The majority were in medicine (n = 31, 40%) or were multidisciplinary (n = 26, 34%); 11 studies were in nursing. Most studies reported that articles published in predatory journals were of lower quality than those published in more reputable journals. In nursing, the research confirmed that articles in predatory journals were being cited in legitimate nursing journals, thereby spreading information that may not be credible through the literature. CONCLUSION: The purposes of the evaluated studies were similar: to understand the characteristics and extent of the problem of predatory publishing. Although literature about predatory publishing is abundant, empirical studies in health care are limited. The findings suggest that individual vigilance alone will not be enough to address this problem in the scholarly literature. Institutional policy and technical protections are also necessary to mitigate erosion of the scientific literature in health care.

Phase-change superlattices with nanometer thin sublayers are promising for low-power phase-change memory (PCM) on rigid and flexible platforms. However, the thermodynamics of the phase transition in such nanoscale superlattices remain unexplored, especially at ultrafast scanning rates, which is crucial for our fundamental understanding of superlattice-based PCM. Here, we probe the phase transition of Sb2Te3 (ST)/Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) superlattices using nanocalorimetry with a monolayer sensitivity (∼1 Å) and a fast scanning rate (105 K/s). For a 2/1.8 nm/nm Sb2Te3/GST superlattice, we observe an endothermic melting transition with an ∼240 °C decrease in temperature and an ∼8-fold decrease in enthalpy compared to those for the melting of GST, providing key thermodynamic insights into the low-power switching of superlattice-based PCM. Nanocalorimetry measurements for Sb2Te3 alone demonstrate an intrinsic premelting similar to the unique phase transition of superlattices, thus revealing a critical role of the Sb2Te3 sublayer within our superlattices. These results advance our understanding of superlattices for energy-efficient data storage and computing.

BACKGROUND: The degree to which prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) may influence alcohol and drug use in adulthood is difficult to determine. That is because PAE is highly correlated with environmental factors, including low socioeconomic status and exposure to parental drinking, and with behavioral problems, such as, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which are correlated with alcohol use and abuse. METHODS: Participants were 121 young adults from our Detroit Longitudinal Cohort study. Mothers were recruited during pregnancy and interviewed about their alcohol consumption using a timeline follow-back procedure. At 19 years, their offspring were interviewed regarding current and past use of alcohol, cigarettes, and other illicit drugs. RESULTS: PAE was associated with greater alcohol, cannabis, and cigarette use. PAE, assessed using overall alcohol intake during pregnancy and alcohol dose per occasion, was associated with larger quantities of alcohol per occasion and greater alcohol tolerance in early adulthood. These effects persisted after control for demographic background, sex, age and education of participant, home environment, other prenatal drug exposure, and postnatal alcohol and drug use by the primary caregiver. Whereas ADHD predicted average alcohol consumed/month during young adulthood, PAE predicted alcohol dose/drinking occasion, and the effect on dose/occasion was not mediated by ADHD. CONCLUSIONS: The effects of PAE on alcohol and cannabis use in young adulthood are not attributable to being reared in an environment that is socioeconomically disadvantaged or in one in which there is extensive maternal drinking. Furthermore, PAE was related to enhanced alcohol tolerance in young adults, a risk factor for alcohol use disorder later in life. Although ADHD was associated with greater alcohol consumption in early adulthood, it did not mediate the effect of PAE on offspring's alcohol use.

The United States (US) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires health warning labels on all cigarette packages as part of a campaign to reduce tobacco smoking. Prior research has revealed the mixed effectiveness of these health warning labels. The present study used nationally representative, longitudinal data from the Population Study of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study to assess whether reported reactions to health warning labels on cigarette packs predict smoking frequency and smoking cessation two years later. We hypothesized that individuals who reported strong reactions to health warnings at Wave 1 of the PATH Study would engage in less frequent smoking behavior and would be more likely to have completely quit cigarette smoking two years later (Wave 3), compared with individuals who did not report strong reactions. Multinomial and binary logistic regressions were used to estimate the associations between attitudes toward health warning labels and later smoking frequency and smoking cessation. Our hypotheses were partially supported; results indicated that several attitudes toward health warnings predict later smoking behaviors. These findings indicate general effectiveness of health warning labels and support the FDA's initiative to require more attention-grabbing health warning labels on cigarette packs.

Oil and gas production generates large amounts of brine wastewater called "produced water" with various geogenic and synthetic contaminants. These brines are generally used in hydraulic fracturing operations to stimulate production. They are characterized by elevated halide levels, particularly geogenic bromide and iodide. Such salt concentrations in produced water may be as high as thousands of mg/L of bromide and tens of mg/L of iodide. Large volumes of produced water are stored, transported, reused in production operations, and ultimately disposed of by deep well injection into saline aquifers. Improper disposal may potentially contaminate shallow freshwater aquifers and impact drinking water sources. Because conventional produced water treatment typically does not remove halides, produced water contamination of groundwater aquifers may cause the formation of brominated and iodinated disinfection by-products (I-DBPs) at municipal water treatment plants. These compounds are of interest because of their higher toxicity relative to their chlorinated counterparts. This study reports a comprehensive analysis of 69 regulated and priority unregulated DBPs in simulated drinking waters fortified with 1 % (v/v) oil and gas wastewater. Impacted waters produced 1.3×-5× higher levels of total DBPs compared to river water after chlorination and chloramination. Individual DBP levels ranged from (<0.1-122 µg/L). Overall, chlorinated waters formed highest levels, including trihalomethanes that would exceed the U.S. EPA regulatory limit of 80 µg/L. Chloraminated waters had more I-DBP formation and highest levels of haloacetamides (23 µg/L) in impacted water. Calculated cytotoxicity and genotoxicity were higher for impacted waters treated with chlorine and chloramine than corresponding treated river waters. Chloraminated impacted waters had the highest calculated cytotoxicity, likely due to higher levels of more toxic I-DBPs and haloacetamides. These findings demonstrate that oil and gas wastewater if discharged to surface waters could adversely impact downstream drinking water supplies and potentially affect public health.
