Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of exposure to nonylphenol (NP) on anxiety/depression-like behaviors in rats and alleviation of those effects via green tea and zinc selenium (Zn-Se) tea interventions. Material and Methods: Totally, 40 male specific-pathogen free (SPF) Sprague-Dawley (SD) male rats were randomly divided into four groups (n = 10 rats per group): control group (5 ml/kg corn oil), NP group (40 mg/kg NP), NP + GT group (40 mg/kg NP + 1 g/kg/day green tea), and NP + Zn-Se tea group (40 mg/kg NP + 1 g/kg/day ZST). All dose-based groups received oral gavage of either corn oil or drugs over a 6-month period: NP at a dosage of 40 mg/kg/day was administered to rats for the initial 3 months, followed by a combination of NP with green tea and NP with Zn-Se tea for the subsequent 3 months. Results: Tea intervention resulted in weight loss in rats. The hippocampal tissue NP level in the tea group was slightly lower than that in the NP group. Following tea intervention, compared with the NP group, the residence time in the light-dark box test was shortened PGT = 0.048, P < 0.001), and the number of entries into the closed arm in the elevated plus maze test in the tea-treated group was significantly reduced. In addition, the immobility time in the central square in the open field test decreased. The sucrose preference index score in the sucrose preference test increased, and the immobility time in the forced swimming test was reduced (PGT = 0.049, PZST < 0.001). The effects of Zn-S e tea were superior to green tea. The damage to the hippocampal tissues in the group treated with tea was less than that in the NP group. The cellular arrangement was tighter with degeneration, deepstaining, and pyknotic nerve cells were visible. The nuclei in the NP group were atrophied, and the cells were sparsely arranged. Compared with the control group, serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) level was lower in the NP group. The serum corticosterone level in the NP group was elevated. Compared with the NP group, serum corticosterone level was reduced in the NP + Zn-Se tea group. Conclusion: Chronic NP exposure induced anxiety/depression-like behaviors in rats. Green tea effectively reduced the damage to the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex induced by NP. The effects of Zn-Se tea were slightly more noticeable than those of conventional green tea. Highlights: 1) Chronic NP exposure induced anxiety/depression-like behaviors in rats.2) Zn-Se tea reduced the damage of hippocampal and prefrontal cortex induced by NP.3) NP-induced depression accompanied by the changes of BDNF, CORT and neuropathology.

Investigation on the physiochemical nature involved in the production of fatty acid catalyzed by the vesicles is of importance to understand the digestion of lipid. In this paper, the effects of crowding degree, which was constructed by polyethylene glycol (PEG), on the autocatalytic production of fatty acid with different chain lengths was studied. The results showed that the higher crowding degree led to the slower production rate of decanoic acid but the faster rate of oleic acid. The reason lies in that the presence of macromolecules resulted in the increased sizes of decanoic acid vesicles, but decreased sizes of oleic acid vesicles. Meanwhile, decanoic acid vesicles in more crowded medium exhibited viscous behavior, whereas oleic acid displayed elastic behavior. This research provides useful information for understanding the unusual autocatalyzed production of fatty acid in macromolecular crowding and may also draw an attention to the physiologically relevant lipid digestion.

Glutathione (GSH) is a natural antioxidant that helps fight free radicals. Whether it will affect the activity of amylase and starch digestion remains unknown. This research disclosed that GSH could interact with starch through hydrogen bonds, which accelerated the swelling of starch granules and promoted the formation of ordered double-helix crystalline, and therefore inhibited starch digestion. Moreover, pig pancreas α-amylase (PPA) which was incubated with GSH displayed a less stable conformation and decreased activity. However, in a crowded media constructed by sodium caseinate (NaCas), an antagonistic effect existed between GSH and NaCas. As the rate and extent of starch digestion have been linked with health aspects, this study suggests that GSH can be used in the formulation of diet foods. It also reminds us to consider the synergistic or antagonistic effects caused by the coexisted components in the complexed food matrix.

In this work, the rapid unfolding kinetics of pancreas α-amylase (PPA) induced by l-arginine and the interaction mechanism were investigated. The unfolding followed a first-level reaction kinetics equation, without intermediates. l-arginine interacted with PPA though diffusion-controlled process rather than complexion. The interaction between l-arginine and PPA resulted in a pronounced decrease in ß-sheet and a significant increase in random coil, and thereby the enzyme activity decreased. However, the unfolding of PPA could be compensated and the second structure change could be recovered to some extent by the macromolecular crowded medium of Pluronics. Further insight into the mechanism disclosed that the broken H-bond network of water may contribute to PPA unfolding. This work provides a new perspective on the interaction of l-arginine with digestive enzyme. The unfolding mechanism of enzymes by may help to understand the effects of other structurally similar drugs, which is of concern in food-drug interactions.

RESUMEN

A palladium-catalyzed [2 + 2 + 1] domino annulation of 3-iodochromones, α-bromo carbonyl compounds, and tetracyclododecene (TCD) is described. This approach provides a facile, efficient and atom-economical route to a variety of chromone-containing polycyclic compounds bearing fused/bridged-ring systems in good yields (up to 81%) with excellent diastereoselectivities (99 : 1 dr in all cases).

The protective effect of zinc selenium tea against metabolic syndrome (MetS) was tested by using a high-sucrose-high-fat diet (HSHFD)-induced MetS model. Fifty Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into five groups: normal diet (C-group), HSHFD (CH-group), HSHFD + green tea (0.24 g/kg/day) (TH-group), HSHFD + low-dose zinc selenium organic tea (0.24 g/kg/day) (ZTHL-group), and HSHFD + high-dose zinc selenium organic tea (1.20 g/kg/day) (ZTHH-group). After 8 weeks, compared to both the C-group and CH-group, the hepatosomatic index (HI) was significantly reduced in the ZTHL-group (p < 0.05). Fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels were highest in the TH-group, followed by the CH-group, then the ZTHL-group, then the ZTHH-group, and finally the C-group. Compared with the CH-group, the serum total cholesterol (TC) and low density lipid-cholesterol (LDL-C) concentrations were significantly lower in the ZTHH-group (p < 0.05). Significant decreases in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total bile acids (TBA), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and direct bilirubin (DBIL) levels were observed in ZTHL-group versus the CH-group (p < 0.05). Serum alpha-L-fucosidase (AFU) levels in the ZTHH-group were lower than in the CH-group (P < 0.01). Histopathological examination of the liver and fat biopsies illustrates that the liver cells showed a decrease in the extent of necrosis and dropsy in the ZTHL-group and ZTHH-group versus the CH-group. Zinc selenium tea showed a protection effect against hepatic damage.
