RESUMEN

Brassinosteroids (BR) play crucial roles in plant development and abiotic stresses in plants. Exogenous application of BR can significantly enhance cold tolerance in rice. However, the regulatory relationship between cold tolerance and the BR signaling pathway in rice remains largely unknown. Here, we characterized functions of the BR receptor OsBRI1 in response to cold tolerance in rice using its loss-of-function mutant (d61-1). Our results showed that mutant d61-1 was less tolerant to cold stress than wild-type (WT). Besides, d61-1 had lower levels than WT for some physiological parameters, including catalase activity (CAT), superoxide dismutase activity (SOD), peroxidase activity (POD), peroxidase activity (PRO), soluble protein, and soluble sugar content, while malondialdehyde content (MDA) and relative electrical conductivity (REC) levels in d61-1 were higher than those in WT plants. These results indicated that the loss of OsBRI1 function resulted in decreased cold tolerance in rice. In addition, we performed RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) of WT and d61-1 mutant under cold stress. Numerous common and unique differentially expressed genes (DEGs) with up- and down-regulation were observed in WT and d61-1 mutant. Some DEGs were expressed to various degrees, even opposite, between CK1 vs. T1 (WT) and CK2 vs. T2 (d61-1). Among these specific DEGs, some typical genes are involved in plant tolerance to cold stress. Through weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA), 50 hub genes were screened in the turquoise and blue module. Many genes were involved in cold stress and plant hormone, such as Os01g0279800 (BRI1-associated receptor kinase 1 precursor), Os10g0513200 (Dwarf and tiller-enhancing 1, DTE1), Os02g0706400 (MYB-related transcription factor, OsRL3), etc. Differential expression levels of some genes were verified in WT and d61-1 under cold stress using qRT-PCR. These valuable findings and gene resources will be critical for understanding the regulatory relationships between cold stress tolerance and the BR signaling pathways in rice.

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION: Data on the efficacy of physical exercise interventions for individuals with gynecologic cancer are limited and discordant. The purpose of this review was to determine the benefits of exercise interventions in this population. LITERATURE SEARCH: The PubMed®, Web of Science, Embase® (Ovid), and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases were searched for studies published from January 1, 2010, to November 9, 2022. DATA EVALUATION: 12 randomized controlled trials were included. A quantitative synthesis method was used to investigate the effects of exercise interventions on individuals with gynecologic cancer. SYNTHESIS: The findings indicate that physical exercise interventions may have beneficial effects on the fatigue, depression, and health-related quality of life of this patient population. However, because of the small group of studies available, the evidence must be regarded as preliminary. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Clinicians and oncology nurses should recommend and refer individuals with gynecologic cancer to clinic- or community-based physical exercise programs.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an important and urgent threat to global health. Inflammation factors are important for COVID-19 mortality, and we aim to explore whether the baseline levels of procalcitonin (PCT), C-reaction protein (CRP) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) are associated with an increased risk of mortality in patients with COVID-19. A retrospective study was conducted and a total of 76 patients with confirmed COVID-19 were included between January 17, 2020 to March 2, 2020, of these cases, 17 patients were dead. After adjusting covariates, PCT (≥ 0.10 ng/mL) and CRP (≥ 52.14 mg/L) exhibited independent increasing risks of mortality were used hazard ratio (HR) of 52.68 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.77-1571.66) and 5.47 (95% CI: 1.04-28.72), respectively. However, NRL (≥ 3.59) was not found to be an independent risk factor for death in our study. Furthermore, the elevated PCT levels were still associated with increasing risk of mortality in the old age group (age ≥ 60 y), and in the critically severe and severe patients after adjustment for complications. Thu Baseline levels of PCT and CRP have been addressed as independent predictors of mortality in patients with COVID-19.

Gallid alphaherpesvirus 2 (GaHV2) is an oncogenic avian herpesvirus inducing Marek's disease (MD) and rapid-onset T-cell lymphomas. To reveal molecular events in MD pathogenesis and tumorigenesis, the dynamic splenic transcriptome of GaHV2-infected chickens during early infection and pathogenic phases has been determined utilizing RNA-seq. Based on the significant differentially expressed genes (DEGs), analysis of gene ontology, KEGG pathway and protein-protein interaction network has demonstrated that the molecular events happening during GaHV2 infection are highly relevant to the disease course. In the 'Cornell Model' description of MD, innate immune responses and inflammatory responses were established at early cytolytic phase but persisted until lymphoma formation. Humoral immunity in contrast began to play a role firstly in the intestinal system and started at late cytolytic phase. Neurological damage caused by GaHV2 is first seen in early cytolytic phase and is then sustained throughout the following phases over a long time period. During the proliferative phase many pathways associated with transcription and/or translation were significantly enriched, reflecting the cell transformation and lymphoma formation. Our work provides an overall view of host responses to GaHV2 infection and offers a meaningful basis for further studies of MD biology.

In the past decade, a large number of microRNAs (miRNAs) have been identified in the viral genome of Gallid herpesvirus 2 (GaHV-2), which is historically known as Marek's disease virus type 1. The biological role of most GaHV-2 miRNAs remains unclear. In the present study, we have performed an overall gene expression profile of GaHV-2 miRNAs during the virus life cycle at each phase of the developing disease, a highly contagious, lymphoproliferative disorder, and neoplastic immunosuppressive disease of poultry known as the Marek's disease. According to their distinct in vivo expression patterns, the GaHV-2 miRNAs can be divided into three groups: 12 miRNAs in group I, including miR-M4-5p, displayed a typical expression pattern potentially correlated to the latent, late cytolytic, and/or the proliferative phases in the cycle of GaHV-2 pathogenesis; group II consisting of another 12 miRNAs with expression correlated to the early cytolytic and/or latent phases in GaHV-2's life cycle; while the other two miRNAs in group III showed no identical expression features. Our findings may provide meaningful clues in the search for further potential functions of viral miRNAs in GaHV-2 biology.

OBJECTIVE: This study was directed to ascertain the mortality of a group of arseniasis patients in an endemic rural township in Southwest China, where the residents were exposed for decades to indoor combustion of high arsenic coal. METHODS: All the diagnosed arseniasis cases registered in 1991 were defined as the target population, which were assigned to three symptom subgroups by the severity of dermal lesions. The death cases were surveyed and checked. The follow-up period was 12.5 years. The standardized mortality ratio (SMR) of all death causes combined, all cancers combined, and the cancers at every site were analyzed. The age standardized mortality rates (ASMRs) were calculated in three subgroups using the procedure of standardization. RESULTS: One hundred and six death cases were recorded. Liver cirrhosis, non-melanotic skin cancer, lung and liver cancer were the four most prevalent death causes and referred to 70.8% (75/106) of the total death cases. The mortality of all death causes combined was not higher than that of the whole of China in 2001 (SMR = 0.76, 95% CI 0.63-0.93). The crude mortality rate of non-melanotic skin cancer in males reached up to 128.66/10(5). SMRs of lung cancer and larynx cancer in males (SMRs 2.84 and 27.27, 95% CIs 1.51-4.86 and 5.61-79.62, respectively) significantly exceeded the levels for all male Chinese. ASMRs of all death causes combined, all cancers combined and non-melanotic skin cancer in males of the severe dermal symptoms subgroup were significantly higher than those in medium and/or mild dermal symptom subgroups. CONCLUSIONS: A significantly increased mortality due to lung cancer and non-melanotic skin cancer was confirmed, alike the situation in other arseniasis endemic areas in the world. No significant elevation of mortality due to liver cancer and bladder cancer was observed. Male arseniasis patients diagnosed with severe skin lesions face higher risks of malignancies and of non-melanotic skin cancer in particular in the following years.
