RESUMEN

A complex electromagnetic environment is a formidable challenge in national defense areas. Microwave-absorbing materials are considered as a strategy to tackle this challenge. In this work, lightweight, flexible, and thermal insulating Carbon/SiO2 @CNTs (CSC) aerogel is successfully prepared coupled with outstanding microwave absorbing performance, through freeze-drying and high-temperature annealing techniques. The CSC aerogel shows a strong reflection loss (-55.16 dB) as well as wide effective absorbing bandwidth (8.5 GHz) in 2-18 GHz. It also retains good microwave absorption properties under tension and compression. Radar cross-sectional (RCS) simulation result demonstrates the CSC processing a strong reduction ability of RCS compared with a metal plate. Further exploration shows amazing flexibility and good thermal insulation properties of CSC. The successful preparation of this composite aerogel provides a broad prospect for the design of microwave-absorbing materials.

RESUMEN

Steam explosion (SE) technology is an effective modification method for improving resource utilization of edible fungi processing by-products. In this study, the effect of SE-modified Tremella fuciformis (T. fuciformis) stem soluble dietary fiber (SDF) on the quality and digestibility of biscuits was investigated. The results showed that the addition of SE-modified T. fuciformis stem SDF (M-SDF) changed the gluten network structure and moisture distribution in the biscuits, which improved the spread ratio of the biscuits and resulted in attractive colors. Meanwhile, as starch was embedded, the starch hydrolysis rate (from 60.9 ± 0.90 % to 43.01 ± 0.78 %) and estimated glycemic index (from 84.10 ± 4.39 to 68.45 ± 3.15) of 12 % M-SDF biscuits were reduced. Furthermore, 8 % M-SDF received the highest sensory scores. These results demonstrate the potential applicability of SE-modified edible fungi processing by-product SDF as an additive in functional foods.

RESUMEN

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has made enormous strides recently in the discovery of anti-herpes simplex virus (HSV) drugs under the guidance of TCM theory. Longdan Xiegan Decoction (LXD), a formulation recorded in the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China, has proved to be effective against HSV infection. However, its effective components and action mechanism remain unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate the effective components and mechanisms of LXD in treating HSV infection based on network pharmacology and experimental validation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The anti-HSV activities of key compounds predicted by network analysis were detected by antiviral tests. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was applied to identify the main components of the LXD aqueous extract. Time-of-addition assay and infectivity inhibition reversibility assay were conducted to identify the potential antiviral mechanisms of licochalcone B (LCB). Additionally, we assessed the antiviral effect of LCB in vivo by use of body weight, viral load, histological analysis, and scoring of genital lesions in an HSV2-infected mouse model. RESULTS: Our data demonstrated that some components exhibited significant anti-HSV1/2 activity in vitro, including quercetin, kaempferol, wogonin, formononetin, naringenin, baicalein, isorhamnetin, glabridin, licochalcone A, echinatin, oroxylin A, isoliquiritigenin, pinocembrin, LCB and acacetin. HPLC analysis showed that LCB was the main component of LXD aqueous extract. In vitro experiments revealed that LCB not only inactivated HSV2 particles, but also inhibited HSV2 multiplication through the inhibition of the phosphorylation of Akt and its downstream targets. In vivo experiments confirmed that LCB could significantly reduce viral titer, delay weight loss, and alleviate pathological changes in vaginal tissue in vaginal infection mouse models. CONCLUSION: LCB acted as the main component of LXD, with significant anti-HSV2 infection effects both in vivo and in vitro. This study provides additional evidence of the healing efficacy of LXD against HSV infection and presents an efficient analytical method for further investigation of the mechanisms of TCM in prevention and treatment of various diseases.

RESUMEN

Gait impairment in Parkinson's Disease (PD) is quantitatively assessed using the Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS), a well-established clinical tool. Objective and efficient PD gait assessment is crucial for developing interventions to slow or halt its advancement. Skeleton-based PD gait MDS-UPDRS score estimation has attracted increasing interest in improving diagnostic efficiency and objectivity. However, previous works ignore the important cross-spacetime dependencies between joints in PD gait. Moreover, existing PD gait skeleton datasets are very small, which is a big issue in deep learning-based gait studies. In this work, we collect a sizable PD gait skeleton dataset by multi-view Azure Kinect sensors. The collected dataset contains 102 PD patients and 30 healthy older adults. In addition, gait data from 16 young adults (aged 24-50 years) are collected to further examine the effect of age on PD gait assessment. For skeleton-based automatic PD gait analysis, we propose a novel cross-spatiotemporal graph convolution network (CST-GCN) to learn complex features of gait patterns. Specifically, a gait graph labeling strategy is designed to assemble and group cross-spacetime neighbors of the root node according to the spatiotemporal semantics of the gait skeleton. Based on this strategy, the CST-GCN module explicitly models the cross-spacetime dependencies among joints. Finally, a dual-path model is presented to realize the modeling and fusion of spatial, temporal, and cross-spacetime gait features. Extensive experiments validate the effectiveness of our method on the collected dataset.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this paper is to assess the prevalence and injury patterns of the calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) in chronic lateral ankle instability (CAI) patients using ultrasound imaging. This retrospective study included 938 ankle ultrasound images from January 2016 to May 2018. The patients' demographic data and the injury pattern classified by the injury location and the remnant quality were recorded and correlated using t tests, Fisher's exact tests, and post hoc tests accordingly. Of the 938 CAI patients, CFL injury was found in 408/938 (44%). Among the 408 anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and CFL complex injury patients, 71/408 (17%) presented with a completely absorbed ATFL, whereas 13/71 (18%) presented with an absorbed CFL. The total CFL absorption proportion in all patients was relatively low (30/938 = 3%). Post hoc tests indicated a negative association between thickened ATFLs and complex injuries. In addition, a positive association existed between absorbed ATFLs and complex injuries as well as absorbed ATFLs and absorbed CFLs. Thus, the results indicated that total tearing and absorption injury patterns of the CFL in CAI are not common. Even when the ATFL is absorbed, only approximately one-fifth (13/71 = 18%) of CFLs require reconstruction, suggesting that it is unnecessary to routinely repair or reconstruct CFLs in all lateral ligament surgeries.

RESUMEN

The structural characteristics and anti-inflammatory activity of Tremella fuciformis polysaccharides (TFPs) were investigated. The study showed that TFPs were mainly composed of mannose, rhamnose, glucuronic acid, glucose, galactose, xylose, and fucose. TFPs significantly inhibited monosodium urate (MSU)-induced inflammation of RAW264.7 cells, as well as the secretion levels of TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-18 cytokines. The concentrations of malondialdehyde and reactive oxygen species in RAW264.7 macrophages were reduced, but superoxide dismutase activity was increased. RNA-Seq technology was applied to explore the mechanisms of TFPs ameliorating MSU-induced inflammation of RAW264.7 macrophages. Results revealed that TFPs significantly reduce MSU-stimulated inflammatory damage in RAW 264.7 cells by inhibiting signaling pathways like the hypoxia inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) signaling pathway and erythroblastic oncogene B (ErbB) signaling pathway. This study provides a foundation for TFPs to be developed as novel anti-inflammatory drugs.

RESUMEN

The short-reach optical transmission systems based on intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) are gradually evolving into the networks with complex link topologies and connections, especially inside the data center. Multipath interference (MPI) introduces irregular fluctuations in the 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) signals and therefore affects the transmission performance. This Letter proposes an adaptive decision threshold (ADT) scheme to dynamically update the decision threshold, which can track the signal fluctuations in real time and mitigate the impact of MPI noise on the transmitted PAM4 signals. Numerical simulation results present that the proposed ADT scheme can significantly improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of the MPI-impaired PAM4 transmission system considering different MPI levels and laser linewidths. In a 50-Gbps PAM4 transmission system, the ADT can improve the MPI tolerance by more than beyond 6 dB when the BER reaches the KP4-forward error correction (FEC) criterion (2.4 × 10-4), presenting a better denoising performance than the existing MPI-mitigation algorithms A1 and A2. Moreover, the ADT scheme offers a lower computation complexity compared with A1 and A2, making it more practical for implementation.

RESUMEN

The physical properties and nutritional quality of H. marmoreus by-products (HMB) dried by different methods were comprehensively evaluated by a rigorous statistical method of grey correlation analysis. The results indicated that different drying methods had significant impacts on the characteristics of HMB. Heat pump drying (HPD) was conducive to the preservation of protein and reducing sugar, and hot air drying (HAD) maintained a high content of total flavonoids. The highest fat, polysaccharide, and total phenolic contents were obtained by heated vacuum freeze-drying (H-VFD) treatment. The unheated vacuum freeze-drying (UH-VFD) treatment achieved bright colour, lacunose texture profile, and looser organization structure. The grey correlation analysis showed that UH-VFD and H-VFD had higher-weighted correlation degrees than HPD and HAD. HMB had many higher nutritional components than commodity specifications, especially protein, fat, polyphenols, and amino acids, and had potential applications in the food industry as functional foods and nutraceutical agents.

RESUMEN

Micro-RNAs play essential roles in developing and progressing nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and drug resistance. Nevertheless, the functions and mechanisms are partly explored. Therefore, the present study analyzes the effect of circ_0006528 and the mechanism of regulation of NSCLC cell progression by sponging miR-892a to regulate neuroblastoma rat sarcoma viral oncogene (NRAS) expression. Initially, circ_0006528 is identified using divergent primers-based PCR and RNase R exonuclease treatments. After administration of the designed circ_0006528-specific siRNA, the RT-qPCR analysis is used to determine the interference efficiency of siRNA. At the same time, cell growth, invasion, and migration are assessed by 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT), Transwell, and scratch assays in the NSCLC cell lines (secretory pathway Ca2+-ATPase isoform 1 [SPCA-1] and A549) in vitro, respectively. Further, miR-892a inhibitor is added to the cells for functional recovery assay. Finally, the xenograft mouse model is constructed to explore the effect of circ_0006528 on tumor growth in vivo. The RT-qPCR analysis in 66 pairs of NSCLC cancer and noncancerous tissues revealed that circ_0006528 is highly expressed in NSCLC patient tissues. The RNase R experiments revealed that HSA_circ_0006528 is unaffected by RNase R exonuclease. MTT assay showed that knockdown of hsa_circ_0006528 by siRNA significantly decreased cell proliferation and viability in A549 and SPCA-1 cells. The luciferase reporter assay showed direct binding of hsa_circ_0006528 to miR-892a, and miR-892a targets binding NRAS. In addition, the miR-892a inhibitor terminated the hsa_circ_0006528 siRNA, triggering inhibition of proliferation, invasion, and migration of NSCLC cells. In summary, the study revealed that the knockout of hsa_circ_0006528 downregulation of NRAS expression by sponging miR-892a inhibited NSCLC cell growth and invasion.

RESUMEN

Small molecule drugs are of significant importance in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Here, we explored biological effects of the PI3K/mTOR inhibitor VS-5584 on NSCLC. Our findings indicated that VS-5584 administration resulted in a dose-dependent inhibition of NSCLC cell proliferation, as well as the induction of apoptosis and cycle arrest. Additionally, we observed a significant increase in intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels following VS-5584 treatment. The use of the ROS inhibitor N-acetylcysteine (NAC) effectively reduced ROS levels and decreased the proportion of apoptotic cells. Treatment with VS-5584 led to an upregulation of genes associated with apoptosis and cell cycle, such as c-caspase 3 and P21. Conversely, a downregulation of cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1) expression was observed. Next, transcriptome analyses revealed that VS-5584 treatment altered the abundance of 1520 genes/transcripts in PC-9 cells, one of which was polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1). These differentially expressed genes were primarily enriched in biological processes such as cell cycle regulation and cell apoptosis, which are closely linked to the P53 and apoptosis pathways. Co-treatment with VS-5584 and PLK1 inhibitor NMS-P937 resulted in enhanced cancer cell death, exhibiting synergistic inhibitory activity. Notably, VS-5584 inhibited the growth of NSCLC in a patient-derived xenograft (PDX) mouse model without observable abnormalities in major organs. Overall, VS-5584 effectively suppressed the growth of NSCLC cells both in vitro and in vivo. VS-5584 combined with NMS-P937 exhibited a synergistic effect in inhibiting NSCLC cell growth. These findings suggest that VS-5584 has potential as a therapeutic strategy for treating NSCLC.

RESUMEN

Blanching is a critical step in the processing of Tremella fuciformis (T. fuciformis). The effects of different blanching methods (boiling water blanching (BWB), ultrasonic-low temperature blanching (ULTB), and high-temperature steam (HTS)) on the quality and moisture migration characteristics of T. fuciformis were investigated. The results showed that the T. fuciformis blanched by ULTB (70 °C, 2 min, 40 kHz, 300 W) had the best quality, including a brighter appearance, superior texture, and good sensory features, with a polysaccharide content of 3.90 ± 0.02%. The moisture migration characteristics of T. fuciformis after blanching exhibited four peaks, displayed strong and weak chemically bound water, immobilized water, and free water, whereas ULTB had a weak effect on the freedom of water in T. fuciformis. The study will provide the foundation for the factory processing of T. fuciformis.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To explore the relationship between water intake, hydration biomarkers and physical activity of young male athletes. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: A 7-day cross-sectional study was conducted among 45 male athletes aged 18-25 years in Beijing, China. Total drinking fluids (TDF) was obtained using 7-day 24-h fluid intake questionnaire. Water from food (WFF) was assessed using the methods of food weighing, duplicate portion method and laboratory analysis. Physical activity was evaluated using physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) and metabolic equivalent of task (MET). RESULTS: Totally, 42 participants completed the study. The medians of total water intake (TWI), TDF and WFF of participants were 2771 mL, 1653 mL and 1088 mL respectively. Jonckheere-Terpstra test showed a significant increase trend toward higher TWI and TDF with higher PAEE level (Z=2.414, p=0.016; Z=2.425, p=0.015). Spearman's rank correlation showed that TWI was positively correlated with PAEE (rs=0.397, p=0.009). TDF showed a positive correlation with PAEE and MET (rs=0.392, p=0.010; rs=0.315, p=0.042). The median urine volume was 840 mL, urine specific gravity was 1.020, and 24-h urine osmolality was 809 mOsm/kg. Significant differences were found in plasma cortisol among the four MET groups (χ2=8.180; p=0.042). CONCLUSIONS: Young male athletes with higher physical activity level had higher amounts of TWI and TDF than their counterparts but had similar hydration biomarkers. There was a high incidence of dehydration in athletes, and attentions need to be paid on the intake of TDF among them to maintain the optimal hydration status.

RESUMEN

HSV-2 is a common human pathogen worldwide that causes genital herpes. Due to the lack of an effective HSV-2 vaccine in the foreseeable future, there is an urgent need to develop effective, safe and affordable anti-HSV-2 agents. Our previous studies confirmed that a small-molecule compound, Q308, effectively inhibits the reactivation of latent HIV and might be developed as an anti-HIV-1 agent. Patients infected with HSV-2 are generally more susceptible to HIV-1 infection than normal humans. In this study, we found that Q308 treatment had strong inhibitory activity against both HSV-2 and acyclovir-resistant HSV-2 strains in vitro and reduced the viral titers in tissue. And this treatment effectively ameliorated the cytokine storm and pathohistological changes caused by HSV-2 infection in HSV-2-infected mice. Unlike nucleoside analogs such as acyclovir, Q308 inhibited post-viral entry events by attenuating the synthesis of viral proteins. Furthermore, Q308 treatment blocked HSV-2-induced PI3K/AKT phosphorylation due to its inhibition on viral infection and replication. Overall, Q308 treatment exhibits potent anti-HSV-2 activity by inhibiting viral replication both in vitro and in vivo. Q308 is a promising lead compound for the development of new anti-HSV-2/HIV-1 therapies, particularly against acyclovir-resistant HSV-2 strains.

RESUMEN

Acute gouty arthritis is an acute inflammatory reaction caused by the deposition of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals in joints and surrounding soft tissues. Controlling inflammation is the key to preventing acute gouty arthritis. Anti-inflammatory activities and the possible molecular mechanisms of plum (Prunus salicina Lindl cv. "furong") polyphenols (PSLP) on RAW264.7 macrophage cells induced by monosodium urate were investigated. PPSF significantly inhibited the activity of inflammatory factors such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), and interleukin-18 (IL-18). In addition, PPSF exhibited excellent activation of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and reduction of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in RAW264.7 macrophages. The results of global screening of all transcripts by RNA-seq revealed 8585 differentially expressed genes between the PSLP-treated group and the MUS group. From GO analysis, PSLP could affect the occurrence and development of RAW264.7 macrophage inflammation through biological processes, such as organic substance metabolism, intracellular organelles, and binding function. The regulation mechanism of PSLP on MSU-induced RAW264.7 macrophage inflammation may be achieved through the HIF-1 signaling pathway, renal cell carcinoma, the ErbB signaling pathway, and the FoxO signaling pathway. Therefore, PSLP has great prospects in the prevention of gout and similar inflammatory diseases.

RESUMEN

The quadruped robots have superior adaptability to complex terrains, compared with tracked and wheeled robots. Therefore, leader-following can help quadruped robots accomplish long-distance transportation tasks. However, long-term following has to face the change of day and night as well as the presence of interference. To solve this problem, we present a day/night leader-following method for quadruped robots toward robustness and fault-tolerant person following in complex environments. In this approach, we construct an Adaptive Federated Filter algorithm framework, which fuses the visual leader-following method and the LiDAR detection algorithm based on reflective intensity. Moreover, the framework uses the Kalman filter and adaptively adjusts the information sharing factor according to the light condition. In particular, the framework uses fault detection and multisensors information to stably achieve day/night leader-following. The approach is experimentally verified on the quadruped robot SDU-150 (Shandong University, Shandong, China). Extensive experiments reveal that robots can identify leaders stably and effectively indoors and outdoors with illumination variations and unknown interference day and night.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate clinical outcomes of autoimmune retinopathy (AIR) in the patients treated with intravitreal dexamethasone implant (IDI). METHOD: Twenty-one eyes of 11 AIR patients treated with at least 1 injection of IDI were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical outcomes before and after treatment, including best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), optic coherence tomography (OCT), fundus autofluorescence (FAF), full-field electroretinography (ff-ERG), and visual field (VF) at last visit within 6 and/or 12 months, were recorded. RESULTS: Among all the patients, 3 had cancer-associated retinopathy (CAR) and 8 had non-paraneoplastic-AIR (npAIR) with mean followed up of 8.52 ± 3.03 months (range 4-12 months). All patients achieved improved or stable BCVA within 6 and/or 12 months after the treatment. Cystoid macular edema (CME) in 2 eyes and significant retinal inflammation in 4 eyes were markedly resolved after single injection. Central retinal thickness (CFT) in all eyes without CME, ellipsoid zone (EZ) on OCT in 71.4% of eyes, ERG response in 55% of eyes, and VF in 50% of eyes were stable or improved within 6 months after treatment. At last visit within 12 months, both BCVA and CFT remained stable in the eyes treated with either single or repeated IDI; however, progression of EZ loss and damage of ERG response occurred in some patients with single IDI. CONCLUSION: Clinical outcomes, including BCVA and parameters of OCT, ERG, and VF, were stable or improved after IDI in a majority of AIR patients. Local treatment of AIR with IDI was a good option to initiate the management or an alternative for the patients' refractory to the systemic therapy but with limited side effect.

RESUMEN

Natural fiber-reinforced biocomposites with excellent mechanical and biological properties have attractive prospects for internal medical devices. However, poor interfacial adhesion between natural silk fiber and the polymer matrix has been a disturbing issue for such applications. Herein, rigid-flexible agents, such as polydopamine (PDA) and epoxy soybean oil (ESO), were introduced to enhance the interfacial adhesion between Antheraea pernyi (Ap) silk and a common medical polymer, polycaprolactone (PCL). We compared two strategies of depositing PDA first (Ap-PDA-ESO) and grafting ESO first (Ap-ESO-PDA). The rigid-flexible interfacial agents introduced multiple molecular interactions at the silk-PCL interface. The "Ap-PDA-ESO" strategy exhibited a greater enhancement in interfacial adhesion, and interfacial toughening mechanisms were proposed. This work sheds light on engineering strong and tough silk fiber-based biocomposites for biomedical applications.

RESUMEN

An experiment was conducted on the polyphenol content, flavonoid content, anthocyanin content, and antioxidant capacity of Furong plum (Prunus salicina Lindl. cv. "furong") at different maturity stages to determine the most suitable maturity stage. The inhibition of plum polyphenols on xanthine oxidase (XOD) was measured, and its kinetics were studied to reveal the inhibitory mechanism. The experimental results showed that the polyphenol, flavonoid and anthocyanin contents of plums at the ripe stage were the highest, reaching 320.46 mg GAE/100 g FW, 204.21 mg/100 g FW, and 66.24 mg/100 g FW, respectively, in comparison those of the plums at the immature and mid-ripe stages. The antioxidant capacity of the ripe plums was stronger than it was during the other stages of the plums growth. Among them, the total polyphenols of the ripe plums exhibited the strongest antioxidant capacity (IC50 values against DPPH and hydroxyl radicals were 28.19 ± 0.67 µg/mL and 198.16 ± 7.55 µg/mL, respectively), which was between the antioxidant capacity of the free polyphenols and bound polyphenols. The major phenolic monomer compounds of plum polyphenols were flavan-3-ols (epicatechin, catechin, proanthocyanidin, and procyanidin B2), flavonols (myricetin), and phenolic acids (chlorogenic acid, ferulic acid, and protocatechuic acid). Additionally, plum polyphenols exhibited a strong inhibitory effect on XOD, with an IC50 value of 77.64 µg/mL. The inhibition kinetics showed that plum polyphenols are mixed-type inhibitors that inhibit XOD activity and that the inhibition process is reversible. The calculated values of Ki and α were 16.53 mmol/L and 0.26, respectively.
