BACKGROUND: Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) has endocrine-disrupting properties and may affect blood pressure. Endogenous hormones also play a crucial role in the progression of hypertension. However, their interaction with hypertension remains to be explored. METHODS: This study included 10 794 adults aged ≥18 years from the China National Human Biomonitoring program. Weighted multiple logistic regression and linear regression were used to examine the associations of serum PFAS with hypertension, diastolic blood pressure, and systolic blood pressure. Joint effects of PFAS mixtures on hypertension, diastolic blood pressure, and systolic blood pressure were evaluated using quantile-based g-computation. Additive and multiplicative interactions were used to assess the role of PFAS with testosterone and estradiol on hypertension. RESULTS: The prevalence of hypertension in Chinese adults was 35.50%. Comparing the fourth quartile with the first quartile, odds ratio (95% CI) of hypertension were 1.53 (1.13-2.09) for perfluorononanoic acid, 1.40 (1.03-1.91) for perfluorodecanoic acid, 1.34 (1.02-1.78) for perfluoroheptane sulfonic acid, and 1.46 (1.07-1.99) for perfluorooctane sulfonic acid. Moreover, PFAS mixtures, with perfluorononanoic acid contributing the most, were positively associated with hypertension, diastolic blood pressure, and systolic blood pressure. PFAS and endogenous hormones had an antagonistic interaction in hypertension. For example, the relative excess risk ratio, attributable proportion, and synergy index for perfluorononanoic acid and estradiol were -3.61 (-4.68 to -2.53), -1.65 (-2.59 to -0.71), and 0.25 (0.13-0.47), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Perfluorononanoic acid, perfluorodecanoic acid, perfluoroheptane sulfonic acid, perfluorooctane sulfonic acid, and PFAS mixtures showed positive associations with hypertension, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure. Positive associations of PFAS with hypertension might be attenuated by increased levels of endogenous sex hormones.

The menstrual cycle influences the risk of acquiring sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis), although the underlying immune contributions are poorly defined. A mouse model simulating the immune-mediated process of menstruation could provide valuable insights into tissue-specific determinants of protection against chlamydial infection within the cervicovaginal and uterine mucosae comprising the female reproductive tract (FRT). Here, we used the pseudopregnancy approach in naïve C57Bl/6 mice and performed vaginal challenge with Chlamydia muridarum (C. muridarum) at decidualization, endometrial tissue remodeling, or uterine repair. This strategy identified that the time frame comprising uterine repair correlated with robust infection and greater bacterial burden as compared with mice on hormonal contraception, while challenges during endometrial remodeling were least likely to result in a productive infection. By comparing the infection site at early time points following chlamydial challenge, we found that a greater abundance of innate effector populations and proinflammatory signaling, including IFNγ correlated with protection. FRT immune profiling in uninfected mice over pseudopregnancy or in pig-tailed macaques over the menstrual cycle identified NK cell infiltration into the cervicovaginal tissues and lumen over the course of endometrial remodeling. Notably, NK cell depletion over this time frame reversed protection, with mice now productively infected with C. muridarum following challenge. This study shows that the pseudopregnancy murine menstruation model recapitulates immune changes in the FRT as a result of endometrial remodeling and identifies NK cell localization at the FRT as essential for immune protection against primary C. muridarum infection.

The integration of sonodynamic therapy (SDT) with cuproptosis for targeted cancer treatment epitomizes a significant advancement in oncology. Herein, we present a dual-responsive therapeutic system, "CytoNano", which combines a cationic liposome infused with copper-nitride nanoparticles and oxygen-rich perfluorocarbon (Lip@Cu3N/PFC-O2), all enveloped in a biomimetic coating of neutrophil membrane and acid-responsive carboxymethylcellulose. CytoNano leverages the cellular mimicry of neutrophils and acid-responsive materials, enabling precise targeting of tumors and their acidic microenvironment. This strategic design facilitates the targeted release of Lip@Cu3N/PFC-O2 within the tumor, enhancing cancer cell uptake and mitochondrial localization. Consequently, it amplifies the therapeutic efficacy of both Cu3N-driven SDT and cuproptosis while preserving healthy tissues. Additionally, CytoNano's ultrasound responsiveness enhances intratumoral oxygenation, overcoming physiological barriers and initiating a combined sonodynamic-cuproptotic effect that induces multiple cell death pathways. Thus, we pioneer a biomimetic approach in precise sonodynamic cuproptosis, revolutionizing cancer therapy.

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have great potential to replace traditional antifouling coatings due to their efficient, green, and broad-spectrum antifouling performance. However, the lubricant dissipation problem of SLIPS severely restricts its further development and application, and the robust SLIPS continues to be extremely challenging. Here, a composite phase-change lubricant layer consisting of paraffin, silicone oil, and MXene is designed to readily construct a stable and NIR-responsive self-healing phase-change solid slippery surface (PCSSS). Collective results showed that PCSSS could rapidly achieve phase-change transformation and complete self-healing under NIR irradiation and keep stable after high-speed water flushing, centrifugation, and ultrasonic treatment. The antifouling performance of PCSSS evaluated by protein, bacteria, and algae antiadhesion tests demonstrated the adhesion inhibition rate was as high as 99.99%. Moreover, the EIS and potentiodynamic polarization experiments indicated that PCSSS had stable and exceptional corrosion resistance (|Z|0.01Hz = 3.87 × 108 Ω·cm2) and could effectively inhibit microbiologically influenced corrosion. The 90 day actual marine test reveals that PCSSS has remarkable antifouling performance. Therefore, PCSSS presents a novel, facile, and effective strategy to construct a slippery surface with the prospect of facilitating its application in marine antifouling and corrosion protection.

Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging has the ability to reconstruct hidden objects, allowing a wide range of applications. Existing NLOS systems rely on pulsed lasers and time-resolved single-photon detectors to capture the information encoded in the time of flight of scattered photons. Despite remarkable advances, the pulsed time-of-flight LIDAR approach has limited temporal resolution and struggles to detect the frequency-associated information directly. Here, we propose and demonstrate the coherent scheme-frequency-modulated continuous wave calibrated by optical frequency comb-for high-resolution NLOS imaging, velocimetry, and vibrometry. Our comb-calibrated coherent sensor presents a system temporal resolution at subpicosecond and its superior signal-to-noise ratio permits NLOS imaging of complex scenes under strong ambient light. We show the capability of NLOS localization and 3D imaging at submillimeter scale and demonstrate NLOS vibrometry sensing at an accuracy of dozen Hertz. Our approach unlocks the coherent LIDAR techniques for widespread use in imaging science and optical sensing.

BACKGROUND: With the improvements in laparoscopic or robotic surgical techniques and instruments, a growing number of surgeons have attempted to complete all digestive tract reconstruction intracorporeally; these procedures include totally robotic gastrectomy (TRG) and totally laparoscopic gastrectomy (TLG). This study aimed to evaluate the safety and feasibility of the TRG and compare the short-term outcomes of the TRG and TLG in patients with gastric cancer. METHODS: Between January 2018 and June 2023, 346 consecutive patients who underwent TRG or TLG at a high-volume academic gastric cancer specialty center were included. 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to reduce confounding bias. The surgical outcomes, postoperative morbidity, and surgical burden were compared in PSM cohort. RESULTS: After PSM, a well-balanced cohort of 194 patients (97 in each group) was included in the analysis. The total operation time of the TRG group was significantly longer than that of the TLG group (244.9 vs. 213.0 min, P < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the effective operation time between the 2 groups (217.8 vs. 207.2 min, P = 0.059). The digestive tract reconstruction time of the TRG group was significantly shorter than that of the TLG group (39.4 vs. 46.7 min, P < 0.001). The mean blood loss in the TRG group was less than that in the TLG group (101.1 vs. 126.8 mL, P = 0.014). The TRG group had more retrieved lymph nodes in the suprapancreatic area than that in the TLG group (16.6 vs 14.2, P = 0.002). The TRG group had a lower surgery task load index (38.9 vs. 43.1, P < 0.001) than the TLG group. No significant difference was found in terms of postoperative morbidity between the 2 groups (14.4% vs. 16.5%, P = 0.691). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that TRG is a safe and feasible procedure, and is preferable to TLG in terms of invasion and ergonomics. The TRG may maximize the superiority of robotic surgical systems and embodies the theory of minimally invasive surgery.

Ischemic stroke is still one of the most serious medical conditions endangering human health worldwide. Current research on the mechanism of ischemic stroke focuses on the primary etiology as well as the subsequent inflammatory response and immune modulation. Recent research has revealed that peripheral blood cells and their components are crucial to the ensuing progression of ischemic stroke. However, it remains unclear whether blood cell elements are principally in charge of systemic inflammation or immunological regulation, or if their participation is beneficial or harmful to the development of ischemic stroke. In this review, we aim to describe the changes in peripheral blood cells and their corresponding parameters in ischemic stroke. Specifically, we elaborate on the role of each peripheral component in the inflammatory response or immunological modulation as well as their interactions. It has been suggested that more specific therapies aimed at targeting peripheral blood cell components and their role in inflammation or immunity are more favorable to the treatment of ischemic stroke.

Aim: FAT10, a ubiquitin-like modifier protein, influences apoptosis, DNA damage response and tumor growth, with unclear effects on cancer prognosis. Methods: We reviewed FAT10 expression's impact on malignancy prognosis through a systematic review and meta-analysis, including studies up to September 2023 from PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science. Results: From 18 studies involving 2513 patients, FAT10 overexpression significantly reduced overall and disease-free survival across various tumors, indicating correlations with advanced disease stage, poor differentiation, lymph node metastasis and larger tumor size. Conclusion: FAT10's overexpression suggests a negative prognostic value in cancer, meriting further investigation.PROSPERO Registration Number: CRD42023431287.


This study investigated a protein called FAT10, which is involved in how cells behave, including how cancer cells grow and survive. It analyzed previous research to see if high levels of FAT10 in patients with cancer can help predict how serious their cancer is and how it might progress. After reviewing 18 studies involving 2513 patients, we found that patients with more FAT10 in their cells often had a worse outlook, including a higher chance of the cancer returning and a shorter overall survival time. This pattern existed for different types of cancer. Our findings suggest that measuring FAT10 levels could be helpful for doctors to better understand a patient's cancer and choose the best treatment. However, more studies are needed to confirm our results.

Aim: This study evaluates the prognostic significance of NOB1 expression levels in various cancers. Patients & methods: Studies examining NOB1 expression in cancer, encompassing data from 1694 patients across 14 studies, were analyzed for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) using hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs, and for clinicopathological parameters using relative risks (RRs). Results: High NOB1 expression correlated with shorter OS (HR: 2.12, 95% CI: 1.82-2.48) and PFS (HR: 2.23, 95% CI: 1.62-3.07) and was associated with adverse tumor characteristics such as stage and metastasis. Conclusion: Elevated NOB1 expression in various tumors signifies a poor prognosis, serving as a predictive marker for malignancy outcomes.PROSPERO Register Number: CRD42023394051.


This study looked at how a protein called NOB1 affects cancer. NOB1 is usually found in healthy parts of the body like the lungs and liver, but it might also show up in cancer. We checked data from many sources to see if there's a connection between NOB1 and cancer's severity. After studying 1694 samples from 14 studies, we found that people with more NOB1 in their bodies had a tougher time with cancer. Their disease got worse quicker and they did not live as long as those with less NOB1. Also, higher NOB1 levels were linked to more serious and aggressive cancers. This means that NOB1 could help doctors predict how bad a patient's cancer is and plan treatments better.

INTRODUCTION: Esophageal cancer (EC), particularly esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), is characterized by high incidence and poor prognosis worldwide, necessitating novel therapeutic approaches like immunotherapy. This review explores the impact of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) on ESCC, especially focusing on PD-1/PD-L1 and CTLA-4 inhibitors. Our literature search, conducted across databases including PubMed, Web of Science, and EMBASE, from January 2010 to December 2023, aimed at identifying advancements, challenges, and future directions in the use of immunotherapy for ESCC. AREAS COVERED: We provide a detailed analysis of clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of ICIs as monotherapy and in combination with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and targeted therapy for locally advanced ESCC. Our findings highlight the significant survival benefits offered by ICIs, albeit with varying efficacy across patient populations, emphasizing the need for precise biomarkers to tailor treatment strategies. EXPERT OPINION: The integration of immunotherapy into the ESCC treatment paradigm represents a significant shift, improving survival outcomes. Future research should focus on optimizing combination therapies and novel immunotherapeutic agents, incorporating genetic and tumor microenvironment analyses to enhance patient selection and treatment efficacy.

Nanomedicine on the basis of aggregated-induced emission (AIE) luminogens with exceptional potency is growing into a sparkling frontier in fluorescence imaging and phototheranostics. Of particular interest is biomimetic AIE nanomedicine comprised by AIE luminogens and biocarrier, which represents a win-win integration and are recently developed at a tremendous pace, mainly benefiting from the intrinsic advantages including enhanced biocompatibility, prolonged circulation time, specific targeting ability, immune activation, and supremely extraordinary phototheranostic outputs. In view of the inexhaustible and vigorous vitality in the field, this review provides an integrated picture on biomimetic AIE nanomedicine involving the basic concepts, significant breakthroughs, and recent trends. In addition, based on the current achievements, some critical challenges and perspectives are also discussed.

Non-Hermitian systems can exhibit unique quantum phases without any Hermitian counterparts. For example, the latest theoretical studies predict a new surprising phenomenon that bulk bands can localize and dissipate prominently at the system boundary, which is dubbed the non-Hermitian edge burst effect. Here we realize a one-dimensional non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice with bulk translation symmetry implemented with a photonic quantum walk. Employing time-resolved single-photon detection to characterize the chiral motion and boundary localization of bulk bands, we determine experimentally that the dynamics underlying the non-Hermitian edge burst effect is due to the interplay of non-Hermitian skin effect and imaginary band gap closing. This new non-Hermitian physical effect deepens our understanding of quantum dynamics in open quantum systems.

We study the excitations of dark solitons in a nonlinear optical fiber with the second- and fourth-order dispersion, and find the emergence of striped dark solitons (SDSs) and some multi-dark-soliton bound states. The SDSs can exhibit time-domain oscillating structures on a plane wave, and they have two types: the ones with or without the total phase step, while the multi-dark-soliton bound states exhibit different numbers of amplitude humps. By the modified linear stability analysis, we regard the SDSs as the results of the competition between periodicity and localization, and analytically give their existence condition, oscillation frequency, and propagation stability, which show good agreements with numerical results. We also provide a possible interpretation of the formation of the existing striped bright solitons (SBSs), and find that SBS will become the pure-quartic soliton when its periodicity and localization carry equal weight. Our results provide the theoretical support for the experimental observation of striped solitons in nonlinear fibers, and our method can also guide the discovery of striped solitons in other physical systems.

Continued interest in the bioactive alkaloids led to the isolation of five undescribed alkaloids (1-5), ophiorglucidines A-E, and seven known analogues (6-12) from the water-soluble fraction of Ophiorrhiza japonica. The structures were elucidated based on spectroscopic data and quantum calculations as well as X-ray crystallographic analysis. The structure of 1 was characterized as a hexacyclic skeleton including a double bridge linking the indole and the monoterpene moieties, which is the first report of a single crystal with this type of structure. Moreover, the inhibitory effect of zwitterionic indole alkaloid glycosides on xanthine oxidase was found for the first time. The alkaloids 2 and 3, both of which have a pentacyclic zwitterionic system, were more active than the reference inhibitor, allopurinol (IC50 = 11.1 µM) with IC50 values of 1.0 µM, and 2.5 µM, respectively. Structure-activity relationships analyses confirmed that the carbonyl group at C-14 was a key functional group responsible for the inhibitory effects of these alkaloids.

Most accidents in a chemical process are caused by abnormal or deviations of the process parameters, and the existing research is focused on short-term prediction. When the early warning time is advanced, many false and missing alarms will occur in the system, which will cause certain problems for on-site personnel; how to ensure the accuracy of early warning as much as possible while the early warning time is a technical problem requiring an urgent solution. In the present work, a bidirectional long short-term memory network (BiLSTM) model was established according to the temporal variation characteristics of process parameters, and the Whale optimization algorithm (WOA) was used to optimize the model's hyperparameters automatically. The predicted value was further constructed as a Modified Inverted Normal Loss Function (MINLF), and the probability of abnormal fluctuations of process parameters was calculated using the residual time theory. Finally, the WOA-BiLSTM-MINLF process parameter prediction model with inherent risk and trend risk was established, and the fluctuation process of the process parameters was transformed into dynamic risk values. The results show that the prediction model alarms 16 min ahead of distributed control systems (DCS), which can reserve enough time for operators to take safety protection measures in advance and prevent accidents.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of chidamide (Chi) combined with a modified Busulfan-Cyclophosphamide (mBuCy) conditioning regimen for T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma (T-ALL/LBL) patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Twenty-two patients received chidamide combined with mBuCy conditioning regimen (Chi group). A matched-pair control (CON) group of 44 patients (matched 1:2) received mBuCy only in the same period. The leukemia-free survival (LFS), overall survival (OS), cumulative incidence of relapse (CIR), and non-relapse-related mortality (NRM) were evaluated. Patients in the Chi group were associated with lower 2-year CIR (19.0 vs. 41.4%, P = 0.030), better 2-year LFS (76.1 vs. 48.1%, P = 0.014), and had no significant difference in 2-year OS (80.5 vs. 66.4%, P = 0.088). Patients with minimal residual disease (MRD) positive before HSCT in the Chi group exhibited an advantage in 2-year LFS and a trend towards better 2-year OS (75.0 vs. 10.2%, P = 0.048; 75.0 vs. 11.4%, P = 0.060, respectively). Multivariable analysis showed that the chidamide intensified regimen was independently associated with better LFS (HR 0.23; 95%CI, 0.08-0.63; P = 0.004), and showed no significant impact with OS for all patients (HR 0.34, 95%CI, 0.11-1.07; P = 0.064). The cumulative incidence rates of grade II-IV aGVHD were similar (36.4 vs. 38.6%, P = 0.858). 20 patients in Chi group evinced an elevation in γ-glutamyltransferase, as compared to the mBuCy group (90.9 vs. 65.9%, P = 0.029). No transplantation-related mortality was documented within the first 100 days after transplantation. The results demonstrate that the chidamide intensified regimen may be an effective and acceptable safety option for T-ALL/LBL undergoing allo-HSCT, and further validation is needed.

Brown carbon (BrC) is a class of light-absorbing organic aerosols (OA) and has significant influence on atmospheric radiative forcing. However, the current limited understanding of the physicochemical properties of BrC restricts the accurate evaluation of its environmental effects. Here the optical characteristics and chemical composition of BrC during wintertime in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region, China were measured by using high-resolution aerosol mass spectrometry (HR-AMS) and UV-vis spectrometry. Our results showed that BrC in PM2.5 during the campaign was dominated by water-soluble organics, which consist of less oxidized oxygenated OA (LO-OOA), more oxidized oxygenated OA (MO-OOA), fossil fuel OA (FFOA) and biomass burning OA (BBOA). MO-OOA and BBOA were the strongest light absorbing BrC at 365 nm (Abs365), followed by LO-OOA and FFOA with a mass absorption coefficient (MAC) being 0.74 ± 0.04, 0.73 ± 0.03, 0.48 ± 0.04 and 0.39 ± 0.06 m2 g-1 during the campaign, respectively. In the low relative humidity (RH < 80 %) haze periods Abs365 of LO-OOA contributed to 44 % of the total light absorption at 365 nm, followed by MO-OOA (31 %), FFOA (21 %) and BBOA (4 %). In contrast, in the high-RH (RH > 80 %) haze periods Abs365 was dominated by MO-OOA, which accounted for 62 % of the total Abs365, followed by LO-OOA (17 %), BBOA (13 %) and FFOA (8 %). Chemical composition analysis further showed that LO-OOA and MO-OOA are produced from gas-phase photooxidation of VOCs and aerosol aqueous reactions, respectively, in which ammonia significantly enhanced the formation and light absorption of BrC in the high RH haze period. On average, >75 % of the total Abs365nm in the YRD region during the haze events was contributed by LO-OOA and MO-OOA, suggesting that atmospheric BrC in China haze periods is predominantly formed by secondary reactions.

Low visibility weather easily leads to traffic accidents, posing threats to human life and property. To accurately forecast visibility, we conduct an empirical study focusing on Jiangsu Province. Firstly, we collect the monitoring data from meteorological stations and environmental stations for 2017-2018. Secondly, we analyze the changes in visibility from both spatial and temporal perspectives. Next, the maximum Relevance Minimum Redundancy (mRMR) algorithm is employed to select factors affecting visibility, finding that humidity and P M 2.5 concentrations are the primary factors. Finally, we propose GCN-GRU (Graph Convolutional Network and Gated Recurrent Unit) model for short-term visibility forecasting, which employs GCN to capture the interactions between stations and uses GRU to learn the interactions between times. Experimental results indicate that GCN-GRU outperforms the standalone GRU model and three machine learning models regarding 6-hour visibility forecasting. Compared to the best competitor, GCN-GRU achieves an average increase of 3.32% in Correlation Coefficient (CORR), a decrease of 17.52% in Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), a reduction of 26.62% in Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), and a decline of 16.53% in Mean Absolute Error (MAE).

End-stage liver diseases, such as cirrhosis and liver cancer caused by hepatitis B, are often combined with hepatic encephalopathy (HE); ammonia poisoning is posited as one of its main pathogenesis mechanisms. Ammonia is closely related to autophagy, but the molecular mechanism of ammonia's regulatory effect on autophagy in HE remains unclear. Sialylation is an essential form of glycosylation. In the nervous system, abnormal sialylation affects various physiological processes, such as neural development and synapse formation. ST3 ß|-galactoside α2,|3-sialyltransferase 6 (ST3GAL6) is one of the significant glycosyltransferases responsible for adding α2,3-linked sialic acid to substrates and generating glycan structures. We found that the expression of ST3GAL6 was upregulated in the brains of mice with HE and in astrocytes after ammonia induction, and the expression levels of α2,3-sialylated glycans and autophagy-related proteins microtubule-associated protein light chain 3 (LC3) and Beclin-1 were upregulated in ammonia-induced astrocytes. These findings suggest that ST3GAL6 is related to autophagy in HE. Therefore, we aimed to determine the regulatory relationship between ST3GAL6 and autophagy. We found that silencing ST3GAL6 and blocking or degrading α2,3-sialylated glycans by way of Maackia amurensis lectin-II (MAL-II) and neuraminidase can inhibit autophagy. In addition, silencing the expression of ST3GAL6 can downregulate the expression of heat shock protein ß8 (HSPB8) and Bcl2-associated athanogene 3 (BAG3). Notably, the overexpression of HSPB8 partially restored the reduced autophagy levels caused by silencing ST3GAL6 expression. Our results indicate that ST3GAL6 regulates autophagy through the HSPB8-BAG3 complex.
