RESUMEN

Fiber light-emitting diodes (Fi-LEDs), which can be used for wearable lighting and display devices, are one of the key components for fiber/textile electronics. However, there exist a number of impediments to overcome on device fabrication with fiber-like substrates, as well as on device encapsulations. Here, we uniformly grew all-inorganic perovskite quantum wire arrays by filling high-density alumina nanopores on the surface of Al fibers with a dip-coating process. With a two-step evaporation method to coat a surrounding transporting layer and semitransparent electrode, we successfully fabricated full-color Fi-LEDs with emission peaks at 625 nanometers (red), 512 nanometers (green), and 490 nanometers (sky-blue), respectively. Intriguingly, additional polydimethylsiloxane packaging helps instill the mechanical bendability, stretchability, and waterproof feature of Fi-LEDs. The plasticity of Al fiber also allows the one-dimensional architecture Fi-LED to be shaped and constructed for two-dimensional or even three-dimensional architectures, opening up a new vista for advanced lighting with unconventional formfactors.

Ovarian cancer is a common, highly lethal tumor. Herein, we reported that S-phase kinase-associated protein 2 (Skp2) is essential for the growth and aerobic glycolysis of ovarian cancer cells. Skp2 was upregulated in ovarian cancer tissues and associated with poor clinical outcomes. Using a customized natural product library screening, we found that xanthohumol inhibited aerobic glycolysis and cell viability of ovarian cancer cells. Xanthohumol facilitated the interaction between E3 ligase Cdh1 and Skp2 and promoted the Ub-K48-linked polyubiquitination of Skp2 and degradation. Cdh1 depletion reversed xanthohumol-induced Skp2 downregulation, enhancing HK2 expression and glycolysis in ovarian cancer cells. Finally, a xenograft tumor model was employed to examine the antitumor efficacy of xanthohumol in vivo. Collectively, we discovered that xanthohumol promotes the binding between Skp2 and Cdh1 to suppress the Skp2/AKT/HK2 signal pathway and exhibits potential antitumor activity for ovarian cancer cells.

Co-solutes such as sucrose and sugar alcohol play a significant part in low methoxyl pectin (LMP) gelation. To explore their gelation mechanism, we investigated the gelation behavior of LMP in the presence of erythritol and sucrose with Ca2+. Results revealed that the introduction of erythritol and sucrose improved the hardness of the gels, fixed more free water, accelerated the rate of gel structuring, and enhanced the gel strength. FT-IR confirmed the reinforced hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic forces between the pectin chains after introducing co-solutes. And it could be observed clearly by SEM that the cross-linking density of gel network enhanced with co-solutes. Furthermore, gel disruption experiments suggested the presence of ionic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic forces in LMP gels. Finally, we concluded that the egg-box regions cross-linked only by LMP and Ca2+ were too weak to form a stable gel network structure. Adding co-solutes could increase the amount of cross-linking between pectin chains and enlarge the cross-linking zones, which favored the formation of a dense gel network by more hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic forces. Sucrose gels had superior physicochemical properties and microstructure than erythritol gels due to sucrose's excellent hydration capacity and chemical structure characteristics.

Ester materials have become a significant topic in ecological restoration because of their degradability and lack of pollution. However, these artificial materials have issues such as high resource consumption and high cost. Therefore, finding a scientific substitute for ester materials is crucial to reduce costs. This study proposes the use of weathered red-bed soil to partially replace ester materials. Orthogonal coupled compounding and ecological effect tests were performed to analyze the soil improvement mechanism based on the mineral composition, soil structure, and electrical conductivity properties of the weathered red-bed soil. The experimental findings indicated that the soil modified using ester materials exhibited improved strength, water retention, and aeration owing to changes in the soil structure. Plant germination and height increased by 55% and 37 mm, respectively, when using a ratio of 15 g/m2 absorbent ester material, 2.5 g/m2 adhesive ester material, and 5% weathered red-bed soil. Through this approach, the amount of ester material to be used could be further reduced by 75%. The weathered red-bed soil offers improved ecological effects by altering the physical, mechanical, and hydraulic properties of the soil structure. This study presents a theoretical foundation for ecological conservation using weathered red-bed soil as a substitute for certain ester materials.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis (IMP) is a rare type of ischemic colitis characterized by thickening of the wall of the right hemicolon and calcification, sclerosis, and fibrosis of mesenteric veins. The diagnosis of IMP is based on typical clinical features and imaging findings. We report a case of IMP that was initially missed by the radiologist. CASE SUMMARY: A 77-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital due to chronic diarrhea for over 2 months. She had been consuming Chinese patent medicines (CPM) containing fructus gardeniae for more than 15 years. Colonoscopy revealed an edematous mucosa, bluish-purple discoloration, erosions, and ulcerations throughout the colorectal area. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) showed diffuse mural thickening of the entire colorectum, with tortuous thread-like calcifications in the right hemicolon, left hemicolon, and rectum. Most of the calcifications were located in the mesenteric vein. The diagnosis of IMP was established based on medical history, colonoscopy, CT findings, and histopathological examination. The patient was treated conservatively with papaverine and rifaximin, and CPM was stopped. Her diarrhea symptoms improved, indicating the effectiveness of the treatment. Over the next several years, she took opium alkaloids for an extended period and did not require hospitalization for the aforementioned gastrointestinal disorder. CONCLUSION: IMP is a rare gastrointestinal disease affecting Asian populations, possibly related to long-term herbal medicine intake. Accurate imaging analysis is crucial for diagnosis, but insufficient understanding of the disease can lead to misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis. Treatment strategies should be personalized.

Exploration of efficient red emitting antimony hybrid halide with large Stokes shift and zero self-absorption is highly desirable due to its enormous potential for applications in solid light emitting, and active optical waveguides. However, it is still challenging and rarely reported. Herein, a series of (TMS)2SbCl5 (TMS=triphenylsulfonium cation) crystals have been prepared with diverse [SbCl5]2- configurations and distinctive emission color. Among them, cubic-phase (TMS)2SbCl5 shows bright red emission with a large Stokes shift of 312 nm. In contrast, monoclinic and orthorhombic (TMS)2SbCl5 crystals deliver efficient yellow and orange emission, respectively. Comprehensive structural investigations reveal that larger Stokes shift and longer-wavelength emission of cubic (TMS)2SbCl5 can be attributed to the larger lattice volume and longer Sb⋅⋅⋅Sb distance, which favor sufficient structural aberration freedom at excited states. Together with robust stability, (TMS)2SbCl5 crystal family has been applied as optical waveguide with ultralow loss coefficient of 3.67 ⋅ 10-4 dB µm-1, and shows superior performance in white-light emission and anti-counterfeiting. In short, our study provides a novel and fundamental perspective to structure-property-application relationship of antimony hybrid halides, which will contribute to future rational design of high-performance emissive metal halides.

Background: Kawasaki disease (KD) is an important cause of acquired heart disease in children and adolescents worldwide. KD and infectious diseases can be easily confused when the clinical presentation is inadequate or atypical, leading to misdiagnosis or underdiagnosis of KD. In turn, misdiagnosis or underdiagnosis of KD can lead to delayed use of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), increasing the risk of drug resistance and coronary artery lesions (CAL). Objectives: The purpose of this study was to develop a predictive model for identifying KD and infectious diseases in children in the hope of helping pediatricians develop timely and accurate treatment plans. Methods: The data Patients diagnosed with KD from January 2018 to July 2022 in Shenzhen Longgang District Maternity & Child Healthcare Hospital, and children diagnosed with infectious diseases in the same period will be included in this study as controls. We collected demographic information, clinical presentation, and laboratory data on KD before receiving IVIG treatment. All statistical analyses were performed using R-4.2.1 (https://www.rproject.org/). Logistic regression and Least Absolute Shrinkage with Selection Operator (LASSO) regression analyses were used to build predictive models. Calibration curves and C-index were used to validate the accuracy of the prediction models. Results: A total of 1,377 children were enrolled in this study, 187 patients with KD were included in the KD group and 1,190 children with infectious diseases were included in the infected group. We identified 15 variables as independent risk factors for KD by LASSO analysis. Then by logistic regression we identified 7 variables for the construction of nomogram including white blood cell (WBC), Monocyte (MO), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), alanine transaminase (ALT), albumin (ALB), C-reactive protein to procalcitonin ratio (CPR) and C-reactive protein to lymphocyte ratio (CLR). The calibration curve and C-index of 0.969 (95% confidence interval: 0.960-0.978) validated the model accuracy. Conclusion: Our predictive model can be used to discriminate KD from infectious diseases. Using this predictive model, it may be possible to provide an early determination of the use of IVIG and the application of antibiotics as soon as possible.

The influence of RG-I domains on high methoxyl pectin (HMP) sugar-acid gel properties has rarely been reported. In our work, HMP was modified by enzymatic de-esterification and degradation of RG-I domains to compare and analyze the relationship between the structure and final sugar-acid gel properties. The results showed that the degree of esterification (DE) of REP (pectin degraded by rhamnosidase) and GEP (pectin debranched by galactosidase) was the same as that of untreated HMP, whereas the DE of PMEP (pectin de-esterified by pectin methyl esterase) decreased from 59.63 % to 54.69 %. The monosaccharide composition suggested no significant changes in the HG and RG-I structural domains of PMEP. In contrast, the percentage of RG-I structural domains of REP and GEP dropped from 37 % to about 28 %, accompanied by a reduction in the proportion of the RG-I backbones and side chains. The rheological characterization of sugar-acid gels demonstrated an enhanced gel grade for PMEP and a weakened one for REP and GEP. Moreover, we constructed a correlation relationship between the fine structure of pectin and the properties of the sugar-acid gels, confirming the critical contribution of the RG-I region (especially the neutral sugar side chains) to the HMP sugar-acid gels.

PURPOSE: To develop a contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) clinic-radiomics nomogram for individualized assessment of Ki-67 expression in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS: A retrospective cohort comprising 310 HCC individuals who underwent preoperative CEUS (using SonoVue) at three different centers was partitioned into a training set, a validation set, and an external test set. Radiomics signatures indicating the phenotypes of the Ki-67 were extracted from multiphase CEUS images. The radiomics score (Rad-score) was calculated accordingly after feature selection and the radiomics model was constructed. A clinic-radiomics nomogram was established utilizing multiphase CEUS Rad-score and clinical risk factors. A clinical model only incorporated clinical factors was also developed for comparison. Regarding clinical utility, calibration, and discrimination, the predictive efficiency of the clinic-radiomics nomogram was evaluated. RESULTS: Seven radiomics signatures from multiphase CEUS images were selected to calculate the Rad-score. The clinic-radiomics nomogram, comprising the Rad-score and clinical risk factors, indicated a good calibration and demonstrated a better discriminatory capacity compared to the clinical model (AUCs: 0.870 vs 0.797, 0.872 vs 0.755, 0.856 vs 0.749 in the training, validation, and external test set, respectively) and the radiomics model (AUCs: 0.870 vs 0.752, 0.872 vs 0.733, 0.856 vs 0.729 in the training, validation, and external test set, respectively). Furthermore, both the clinical impact curve and the decision curve analysis displayed good clinical application of the nomogram. CONCLUSION: The clinic-radiomics nomogram constructed from multiphase CEUS images and clinical risk parameters can distinguish Ki-67 expression in HCC patients and offer useful insights to guide subsequent personalized treatment.

Cancer patients are at high risk of malnutrition, which can lead to adverse health outcomes such as prolonged hospitalization, increased complications, and increased mortality. Accurate and timely nutritional assessment plays a critical role in effectively managing malnutrition in these patients. However, while many tools exist to assess malnutrition, there is no universally accepted standard. Although different tools have their own strengths and limitations, there is a lack of narrative reviews on nutritional assessment tools for cancer patients. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a non-systematic literature search using PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library from their inception until May 2023. A total of 90 studies met our selection criteria and were included in our narrative review. We evaluated the applications, strengths, and limitations of 4 commonly used nutritional assessment tools for cancer patients: the Subjective Global Assessment (SGA), Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA), Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), and Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM). Our findings revealed that malnutrition was associated with adverse health outcomes. Each of these 4 tools has its applications, strengths, and limitations. Our findings provide medical staff with a foundation for choosing the optimal tool to rapidly and accurately assess malnutrition in cancer patients. It is essential for medical staff to be familiar with these common tools to ensure effective nutritional management of cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal fibrosis (PF), a common complication of long-term peritoneal dialysis, accounts for peritoneal ultrafiltration failure to develop into increased mortality. Nintedanib has previously been shown to protect against multi-organ fibrosis, including PF. Unfortunately, the precise molecular mechanism underlying nintedanib in the pathogenesis of PF remains elusive. METHODS: The mouse model of PF was generated by chlorhexidine gluconate (CG) injection with or without nintedanib administration, either with the simulation for the cell model of PF by constructing high-glucose (HG)-treated human peritoneal mesothelial cells (HPMCs). HE and Masson staining were applied to assess the histopathological changes of peritoneum and collagen deposition. FISH, RT-qPCR, western blot and immunofluorescence were employed to examine distribution or expression of targeted genes. Cell viability was detected using CCK-8 assay. Cell morphology was observed under a microscope. RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assays were applied to validate the H19-EZH2-KLF2 regulatory axis. RESULTS: Aberrantly overexpressed H19 was observed in both the mouse and cell model of PF, of which knockdown significantly blocked HG-induced mesothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (MMT) of HPMCs. Moreover, loss of H19 further strengthened nintedanib-mediated suppressive effects against MMT process in a mouse model of PF. Mechanistically, H19 could epigenetically repressed KLF2 via recruiting EZH2. Furthermore, TGF-ß/Smad pathway was inactivated by nintedanib through mediating H19/KLF2 axis. CONCLUSION: In summary, nintedanib disrupts MMT process through regulating H19/EZH2/KLF2 axis and TGF-ß/Smad pathway, which laid the experimental foundation for nintedanib in the treatment of PF.

ABSTRACT: The high level of oxidative stress induced by angiotensin II (AngII) is the main pathophysiological process that promotes the proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and induces vascular remodeling. LncRNA Metastasis-related lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT1) has been determined to play an important role in the modulation of oxidative stress and the development of cardiovascular diseases. Nevertheless, the function and underlying mechanism of MALAT1 in restenosis induced by hypertensive angioplasty remain unclear. AngII increased the expression of MALAT1 in VSMCs. We found that anti-sense oligonucleotide lncRNA MALAT1 (ASO-MALAT1) could inhibit AngII induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and VSMCs proliferation and migration by inducing the expression of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), which can be reversed by siRNA-GPX4. And GPX4 overexpression can inhibit the proliferation and migration of VSMCs induced by AngII. In addition, we found that the process by which MALAT1 knockdown induces GPX4 expression involves nuclear factor erythrocyte 2 related factor 2 (Nrf2). Overexpression of Nrf2 can increase the expression of GPX4, and down-regulation of GPX4 by ML385 (Nrf2 inhibitor) blocked the protective effect of ASO-MALAT1 on AngII-induced proliferation and migration of VSMCs. Ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1, ip 5mg/kg per day for 2 weeks), a GPX4 agonist, significantly inhibited neointimal formation in spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) by the inhibition of oxidative stress. In conclusion, these data imply that ASO-MALAT1 suppresses the AngII-induced oxidative stress, proliferation and migration of VSMCs by activating Nrf2/GPX4 antioxidant signaling. GPX4 may be a potential target for the therapeutic intervention of hypertensive vascular restenosis.

Revealing the stimuli-responsive mechanism is the key to the accurate design of stimuli-responsive luminescent materials. We report herein the multistimuli-responsive multicolor solid-state luminescence of a new dicopper(I) complex [{Cu(bpmtzH)}2(µ-dppa)2](ClO4)2 (1), and the multistimuli-responsive mechanism is clarified by investigating its four different solvated compounds 1·2CH3COCH3·2H2O, 1·2DMSO·2H2O, 1·4CH3OH, and 1·4CH2Cl2. It is shown that luminescence mechanochromism is associated with the breakage of the hydrogen bonds of bmptzH-NH with counter-ions such as ClO4- induced by grinding, while luminescence vapochromism is attributable to the breaking and forming of hydrogen bonds of dppa-NH with solvents, such as acetone, dimethylsulfoxide, and methanol, caused by heating and vapor fuming. In addition, those results might provide new insights into the design and synthesis of multistimuli-responsive multicolor luminescent materials by using various structure-sensitive functional groups, such as distinct N-H ones, to construct switchable hydrogen bonds.

BACKGROUND: Few reports have described living foreign bodies in the human body. The current manuscript demonstrates that computed tomography (CT) is an effective tool for accurate preoperative evaluation of living foreign bodies in clinic. The three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction technology could clearly display anatomical structures, lesions and adjacent organs, improving diagnostic accuracy and guiding the surgical decision-making process. CASE SUMMARY: Herein we describe a 68-year-old man diagnosed with digestive tract perforation and acute peritonitis caused by a foreign body of Monopterus albus. The patient presented to the emergency department with complaints of dull abdominal pain, profuse sweating and a pale complexion during work. A Monopterus albus had entered the patient's body through the anus two hours ago. During hospitalization, the 3D reconstruction technology revealed a perforation of the middle rectum complicated with acute peritonitis and showed a clear and complete Monopterus albus bone morphology in the abdominal and pelvic cavities, with the Monopterus albus biting the mesentery. Laparoscopic examination detected a large (diameter of about 1.5 cm) perforation in the mid-rectum. It could be seen that a Monopterus albus had completely entered the abdominal cavity and had tightly bitten the mesentery of the small intestine. During the operation, the dead Monopterus albus was taken out. CONCLUSION: The current manuscript demonstrates that CT is an effective tool for accurate preoperative evaluation of living foreign bodies in clinic.

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is one of the serious adverse drug reactions (ADRs), which belongs to immune-mediated adverse drug reactions (IM-ADRs). As an essential health drug, albendazole has rarely been reported to cause serious liver damage. A young man in his 30 s developed severe jaundice, abnormal transaminases, and poor blood coagulation mechanism after taking albendazole, and eventually developed into severe liver failure. The patient was found heterozygous of HLA-B*15:02 and HLA-B*13:01 through HLA-targeted sequencing, which may have a pathogenic role in the disease. This case report summarizes his presentation, treatment, and prognosis. A useful summary of the diagnosis and associated genetic variant information is provided.

Background: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) can guide umbilical vein catheter placement in real time and monitor catheter tip position, allowing avoidance of severe complications due to catheter malposition. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of POCUS in guiding venous catheter insertion and monitoring complications. Methods: Sixty-eight neonates with ultrasound-guided venous catheter insertion at the Neonatal Department of Dongguan Children's Hospital between December 2020 and February 2022 were included. POCUS was applied to monitor catheter tip location daily until catheter removal. A displacement range exceeding the intersection of the inferior vena cava and right atrium by ±0.5 cm was considered misalignment. Results: Sixty-four neonates had a displaced catheter tip (94.1%, 64/68), with a median displacement distance of 0.4 cm (minimum -0.2 cm, maximum 1.2 cm). Ten neonates had a misalignment (14.7%, 10/68) caused by displacement. Displacement usually occurs within 2-4 days after placement, with displacement rates of 94.1% (64/68), 90.6% (58/64), and 98.3% (59/60) on days 2, 3, and 4, respectively, and could still occur on day 9 post-placement. In addition, misalignment mainly occurs on the second day after placement. During the monitoring process, 58 neonates had catheter tip displacement ≥2 times, resulting in 252 displacement and 22 misalignment incidents. Among them, the catheter tip migrated outward from the inferior vena cava seven times, all of which were removed in time. Ultrasound was used for positioning 486 times, and x-ray was indirectly avoided 486 times. Conclusion: The catheter tip is prone to displacement and misalignment after umbilical vein catheterization, which most commonly occurs on days 2-4. POCUS is recommended for daily monitoring of the tip location during umbilical vein catheterization until catheter removal.

Canine individual identification and parentage testing are essential in various fields, including forensics and breeding programs. This study aimed to develop and validate the Canine 25 A kit, a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) system designed to address these critical requirements. This novel system enables the simultaneous amplification of 24 canine autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) loci and one sex-determining marker. Validation of the Canine 25 A kit was conducted following the Scientific Working Group on DNA Analysis Methods (SWGDAM) guidelines, demonstrating significant sensitivity, high inhibitor tolerance, canine specificity within a mixture, species specificity, and precision in genotype determination. The Canine 25 A kit was crucial in resolving several forensic cases, such as casework samples from a dog attack incident and parentage determination. Its effectiveness in genotyping these samples highlights its significance in forensic applications. Population genetic parameter analysis revealed a high discriminatory power, as indicated by the calculated combined discrimination power (CDP) values for each breed exceeding 0.999 999 999 999, while the combined power of exclusion (CPE) surpassed 0.9999. Overall, the Canine 25 A kit offers a precise and dependable tool for canine individual identification and parentage determination.

Background: As a chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disease, Parkinson's disease (PD) still lacks effective and safe targeted drug therapy. Low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU), a new method to stimulate the brain and open the blood-brain barrier (BBB), has been widely concerned by PD researchers due to its non-invasive characteristics.Methods: PubMed was searched for the past 10 years using the terms 'focused ultrasound', 'transcranial ultrasound', 'pulse ultrasound', and 'Parkinson's disease'. Relevant citations were selected from the authors' references. After excluding articles describing high-intensity focused ultrasound or non-Parkinson's disease applications, we found more than 100 full-text analyses for pooled analysis.Results: Current preclinical studies have shown that LIFU could improve PD motor symptoms by regulating microglia activation, increasing neurotrophic factors, reducing oxidative stress, and promoting nerve repair and regeneration, while LIFU combined with microbubbles (MBs) can promote drugs to cross the BBB, which may become a new direction of PD treatment. Therefore, finding an efficient drug carrier system is the top priority of applying LIFU with MBs to deliver drugs.Conclusions: This article aims to review neuro-modulatory effect of LIFU and the possible biophysical mechanism in the treatment of PD, summarize the latest progress in delivering vehicles with MBs, and discuss its advantages and limitations.
