RESUMEN

Maleic acid was studied by Raman spectroscopy and powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) under high pressure conditions by using a diamond anvil cell. The Raman spectroscopy measurements were performed from ambient pressure up to 9.2 GPa in the 100-3200 cm-1 spectral range. While the XRD measurements were performed up to 10.1 GPa. Here we present the pressure-dependence behavior from both the Raman modes and cell parameters. Maleic acid lattice parameters decrease anisotropically as a function of pressure and a reduction of 27% in the volume of the unit cell was observed. Modifications in the material's compressibility were observed at around 2 and 6 GPa.

RESUMEN

L-histidinium hydrogen oxalate (L-HisH)(HC2O4) crystal is formed from amino acid. L-histidine with oxalic acid whose vibrational high pressures behavior have not yet been investigated in the literature. Here we synthesized (L-HisH)(HC2O4) crystal by slow solvent evaporation method in a 1:1 ratio of L-histidine and oxalic acid. In addition, a vibrational study of (L-HisH)(HC2O4) crystal as a function of pressure was performed via Raman spectroscopy in the pressure range of 0.0-7.3 GPa. From analysis of the behavior of the bands within 1.5-2.8 GPa, characterized by the disappearance of lattice modes, the occurrence of a conformational phase transition was noted. A second phase transition, now from structural type, close to 5.1 GPa was observed due to the incidence of considerable changes in lattice and internal modes, mainly in vibrational modes related to imidazole ring motions.

RESUMEN

This work reports a pressure-dependent Raman spectroscopic study and the theoretical lattice dynamics calculations of a Bi2(MoO4)3 crystal. The lattice dynamics calculations were performed, based on a rigid ion model, to understand the vibrational properties of the Bi2(MoO4)3 system and to assign the experimental Raman modes under ambient conditions. The calculated vibrational properties were helpful to support pressure-dependent Raman results, including eventual structural changes induced by pressure changes. Raman spectra were measured in the spectral region between 20 and 1000 cm-1 and the evolution of the pressures values was recorded in the range of 0.1-14.7 GPa. Pressure-dependent Raman spectra showed changes observed at 2.6, 4.9 and 9.2 GPa, these changes being associated with structural phase transformations. Finally, principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) were performed to infer the critical pressure of phase transformations undergone by the Bi2(MoO4)3 crystal.

RESUMEN

Dyslipidemia is common in patients with chronic kidney disease. Curcumin, a bioactive polyphenol from Curcuma longa, can improve lipid profile. This study aims to analyze the effects of Curcuma Longa extract supplementation on lipid profile and lipoprotein subfractions in hemodialysis (HD) patients. This is a longitudinal, double-blind, washout-period randomized clinical trial. The patients were randomized into two groups: the curcumin group (n = 10) (orange and carrot juice with 2.5 g of Curcuma Longa extract) and the control group (n = 11) (juice without curcumin) 3x/w during HD sessions for 3 months. After the washout period, patients continued the supplementation as a crossover for the same period. The lipid profile was measured using enzymatic assays. The high-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein subfractions analyses were performed using LipoprintTM. In the curcumin group, the triglyceride values tended to decrease with a different triglyceride variation between the pre and post-intervention for the control and curcumin groups of 38.5 (19.8) mg/dL (p = 0.06). There was no statistical difference in the others parameters. In conclusion, Curcuma longa extract may be a good nutritional strategy to reduce triglyceride plasma levels in hemodialysis patients, but it seems ineffective for the other parameter.

RESUMEN

Autoimmune rheumatic diseases (ARDs) involve multiple organs including the heart and vasculature. Despite novel treatments, patients with ARDs still experience a reduced life expectancy, partly caused by the higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This includes CV inflammation, rhythm disturbances, perfusion abnormalities (ischaemia/infarction), dysregulation of vasoreactivity, myocardial fibrosis, coagulation abnormalities, pulmonary hypertension, valvular disease, and side-effects of immunomodulatory therapy. Currently, the evaluation of CV involvement in patients with ARDs is based on the assessment of cardiac symptoms, coupled with electrocardiography, blood testing, and echocardiography. However, CVD may not become overt until late in the course of the disease, thus potentially limiting the therapeutic window for intervention. More recently, cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) has allowed for the early identification of pathophysiologic structural/functional alterations that take place before the onset of clinically overt CVD. CMR allows for detailed evaluation of biventricular function together with tissue characterization of vessels/myocardium in the same examination, yielding a reliable assessment of disease activity that might not be mirrored by blood biomarkers and other imaging modalities. Therefore, CMR provides diagnostic information that enables timely clinical decision-making and facilitates the tailoring of treatment to individual patients. Here we review the role of CMR in the early and accurate diagnosis of CVD in patients with ARDs compared with other non-invasive imaging modalities. Furthermore, we present a consensus-based decision algorithm for when a CMR study could be considered in patients with ARDs, together with a standardized study protocol. Lastly, we discuss the clinical implications of findings from a CMR examination.

RESUMEN

The dopamine content in cerebral structures has been related to neuronal excitability and several approaches have been used to study this phenomenon during seizure vulnerability period. In the present work, we describe the effects of dopamine depletion after the administration of 6-hidroxidopamine (6-OHDA) into the substantia nigra pars compacta of male rats submitted to the pilocarpine model of epilepsy. Susceptibility to pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus (SE), as well as spontaneous and recurrent seizures (SRSs) frequency during the chronic period of the model were determined. Since the hippocampus is one of main structures in the development of this experimental model of epilepsy, the dopamine levels in this region were also determined after drug administration. In the first experiment, 62% (15/24) of 6-OHDA pre-treated rats and 45% (11/24) of those receiving ascorbic acid as control solution progressed to motor limbic seizures evolving to SE, after the administration of pilocarpine. Severeness of seizures during the model´s the acute period, was significantly higher in epileptic experimental rats (56.52%), than in controls (4.16%). In the second experiment, the frequency of seizures in the model's chronic phase did not significantly change between groups. Our data show that dopamine may play an important role on seizure severity in the pilo's model acute period, which seems to be due to dopamine inhibitory action on motor expression of seizure.

RESUMEN

The high-pressure Raman spectra of L-tyrosine hydrobromide crystal (LTHBr) were obtained from 1.0 atm to 8.1 GPa in the 100-3200 cm-1 spectral region. The structural conformation and dimensions of the monoclinic unit cell were estimated using the powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) method and Rietveld refinement using the GSAS program. At atmospheric pressure, the Raman spectrum was obtained in the spectral range of 100-3200 cm-1 and the assignment of the normal modes based on density functional theory calculations was provided. Large wavenumber shifts of modes at 106, 123, and 157 were observed, which were interpreted as the large displacement of the atoms, making the molecule a flexible structure. The change in the slope (dÉ· / dP) of these bands between the pressures of 3.0 and 4.0 GPa and the appearance of a mode of low wavenumber indicate the occurrence of a structural phase transition. A band initially observed at 181 cm-1 in the spectrum recorded at 0.7 GPa change the relative intensity with a band at 280 cm-1 (recorded at 5.8 GPa), indicating a conformational transition. In the region of the internal modes, the spectra show changes that reinforce the conformational phase transition since the bands initially at 1247 and 1264 cm-1 observed at 1.0 GPa have their intensities reversed, and at 3.0 GPa it is observed the fusion of the bands at 1264 and 1290 cm-1 (values recorded at ambient pressure). Thus, we can assume that the LTHBr crystal has undergone a structural phase transition and a conformational phase transition in the pressure range investigated.

RESUMEN

Raman spectra of Fe-doped L-asparagine monohydrate (LAM:Fe) crystal were studied under several temperatures varying from 17 to 490 K. The effect of Fe (III) ion on the stability of the crystal in changing temperature through the vibrational spectra was discussed. The behavior of inter and intra-molecular vibration modes has indicated two phase transitions and an amorphous transformation. These effects were also clarified by X-ray powder diffraction measurements which corroborate very well the Raman data. In addition, we have determinated the lattice parameters of all phases and verified that under low temperature conditions the crystal undergoes a conformational transition whereas under high temperatures its structure transforms from the orthorhombic (P212121-space group) to the monoclinic (P21-space group) symmetry and, after this process, it goes to an amorphous phase due to the start of the decomposition. Finally, differential scanning calorimetry analysis was utilized as complementary technique to investigate the structural stability of LAM:Fe and results are in a good agreement with the Raman and the X-ray diffraction data.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to evaluate the combined use of different chemical (albendazole, ivermectin, glycerine and Vaseline) and biological (Monacrosporium thaumasium) compounds in the control of Ancylostoma caninum. Infective larvae of A. caninum were obtained from coprocultures of positive faeces from naturally infected dogs. We used 1% ivermectin, 1% albendazole, 100% glycerine, 100% Vaseline and an isolate of the nematophagous fungus M. thaumasium (NF34), alone or in combinations. Next, an experimental test was set up with 16 groups in microtubes, with a 24-h interaction. The groups (G1 to G15) that contained any chemical or biological compound (NF34) and/or their combined use (chemical + biological) showed a difference in relation to the control group, except G5 - Vaseline 100% without combinations. It was concluded that, even on an experimental basis, the combined use of anthelmintic drugs with biological control was efficient; however, more studies must be carried out in order to elucidate the synergistic action between chemical and biological compounds to be used in the effective control of hookworms in the future.

RESUMEN

Nonadditive Tsallis q-statistics has successfully been applied for a plethora of systems in natural sciences and other branches of knowledge. Nevertheless, its foundations have been severely criticized by some authors based on the standard additive Boltzmann-Gibbs approach, thereby remaining a quite controversial subject. In order to clarify some polemical concepts, the distribution function for an ideal gas with a finite number of point particles and its q-index are analytically determined. The two-particle correlation function is also derived. The degree of correlation diminishes continuously with the growth of the number of particles. The ideal finite gas system is usually correlated, becomes less correlated when the number of particles grows, and is finally fully uncorrelated when the molecular chaos regime is reached. It is also advocated that both approaches can be confronted through a careful kinetic spectroscopic experiment. The analytical results derived here suggest that Tsallis q-statistics may play a physical role more fundamental than usually discussed in the literature.

RESUMEN

We report here the analysis of vibrational properties of the ZnMoO4 by using theoretical and experimental approaches, well as results of high pressure experiments in this system. The analysis of the lattice dynamics calculations through the classical rigid ion model, was applied to determine the mode assignment in the triclinic phase of the ZnMoO4. Additionally, the experimental high-pressure Raman spectra of the ZnMoO4 were carried out from 0 GPa up to 6.83 GPa to shed light on the structural stability of this system. The pressure-dependent studies showed that this crystal undergoes a first order phase transition at around 1.05 GPa. The Raman spectrum analysis of the new phase shows a significant change in the number of modes for the spectral range of 20-1000 cm-1. The instability of this phase occurs due to the decrease of the MoO bond lengths in the high-pressure phase, connected with tilting and/or rotations of the MoO4 tetrahedra leading to a disorder at the MoO4 sites. The second and third phase transformations were observed, respectively, at about 2.9 GPa and 4.77 GPa, with strong evidences, in the Raman spectra, of crystal symmetry change. The principal component analysis (PCA) and the hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) were used in order to infer the intervals of pressure where the different phases do exist. Discussion about the number of non equivalent sites for Mo ions and the kind of coordination for molybdenum atoms is also furnished.

RESUMEN

DL-glutamic acid monohydrate crystal was synthesized from an aqueous solution by slow evaporation technique. The crystal was submitted to high-pressure (1 atm-14.3 GPa) to investigate its vibrational behavior and the occurrence of phase transitions. We performed Raman spectroscopy as probe and through the analysis of the spectra we discovered three structural phase transitions. The first one occurs around 0.9 GPa. In this phase transition, glutamic acid molecules suffer modifications in their conformations while water molecules are less affected. The second phase transition at 4.8 GPa involves conformational changes related to CO2-, NH3+ units and the water molecules, while the third one, between 10.9 and 12.4 GPa, involves motions of several parts of the glutamic acid as well as the water molecules. Considering the dynamic of high pressure, the second phase of DL-glutamic acid monohydrate crystal presented a better stability compared with the second phase of its polymorphs α and ß L-glutamic acid. In addition, water molecules seem to play important role on this structural stability. All changes are reversible.

RESUMEN

DLisoleucine single crystals were grown by the slow evaporation method at ambient temperature. Their vibrational properties were studied at ambient temperature as a function of pressure by Raman scattering. At ambient conditions the mode assignment was done in terms of the Potential Energy Distribution (PED) through density functional theory calculations. Both nitrogen and neon were used as pressure transmitting media. The pressure-dependent investigation shows modifications in the Raman spectra recorded between 30 and 3200 cm-1 that were interpreted as phase transitions undergone by the crystal between 1.3 and 1.9 GPa and between 3.6 and 5.1 GPa. Finally, stress was simulated on the unit cell of the crystal from ambient up to 5.0 GPa.

RESUMEN

Tick-borne disease is a hemolytic disease complex that causes extensive losses to the dairy industry in tropical regions. Its timely diagnosis is challenging and labor intensive. Our objective was to investigate whether tick-borne disease was associated with changes in ingestive behavior of weaned dairy calves. Weaned calves (n = 35) enrolled at 108 ± 8 d of age were group housed (n = 12, 12, and 11/group) for 4 wk in the experimental pen, which had 12 electronic feed bins and 2 electronic water bins. Data were automatically collected at each feed or water bin visit via radio frequency identification ear tags. Water and total mixed ration were provided ad libitum. Calves were examined weekly for tick-borne disease detection. A disease bout was confirmed if packed cell volume was ≤25% at any exam. Diseased calves received antimicrobial and antipyretic treatment. Data were summarized by day within bin type (feed or water) as intake (kg/d; as-fed basis), frequency of visits (visits/d), and total duration of visits (min/d). Day of detection was set as d 0; a 9-d behavioral screening period for evaluation of behavioral changes was set according to d 0 (d -4 to +4). A within-calf mean was calculated for the healthy period (HP; mean of all days between 2 consecutive negative exams) for each response variable. Data were analyzed as within-calf differences between HP and each day of the behavioral screening period. Tick-borne disease was detected in 12 calves; thus, only data referent to these animals were included in the analyses. Compared with HP, daily feed intake was reduced on d -1, 0, and +1, and daily frequency and total duration of feed bin visits were reduced from d -3 to d +4. Daily feed intake was reduced by 35% on d -1 (3.5 ± 0.4 vs. 5.4 ± 0.5 kg/d for HP), and daily frequency and duration of visits were reduced by 27% (56.3 ± 7.8 vs. 76.7 ± 8.1 visits/d for HP) and 24% (27.0 ± 3.8 vs. 35.4 ± 3.9 min/d for HP) on d -3, respectively. Daily water intake on d 0 (9.1 ± 1.4 kg/d) was lower than at HP (12.9 ± 1.6 kg/d), but other drinking behaviors were not different from healthy means during the screening period. Feeding behavior, but not drinking behavior, was different from HP means before detection at weekly exams. Therefore, feeding behavior could be further explored for the development of algorithms for tick-borne disease detection.

RESUMEN

The aims of this study were (1) to assess if there is phenotypical divergence for feed efficiency (FE) during the preweaning phase; (2) if FE is correlated with heat production (HP) measured by the face mask method or (3) by surface skin temperature via thermography, and (4) whether these methods are applicable to preweaned calves. Holstein × Gyr heifer calves (n = 36, birth body weight = 32.4 ± 6.6 kg) were enrolled and on trial between 4 and 12 wk of age and were classified into 2 residual feed intake (RFI) and residual body weight gain (RG) groups: high efficiency (HE; RFI, n = 10; and RG, n = 9) and low efficiency (LE; RFI, n = 10; and RG, n = 8). Calves were fed milk (6 L/d) and solid feed (95% starter and 5% chopped Tifton 85 hay, as fed). Growth was monitored weekly and feed intake (milk and solid feed) daily, during the whole period. Gas exchanges (O2 consumption and production of CO2 and CH4) were obtained using a face mask at 45 ± 5 d of age and HP was estimated. Maximum temperatures were measured at 7 sites with an infrared camera at 62 ± 7 d of age. There was divergence in RFI and RG. Respectively, HE and LE calves had RFI of -0.14 and 0.13 kg/d, and RG of 0.05 and -0.07 kg/d. Dry matter intake was 15% lower in HE-RFI compared with LE-RFI, but no differences were observed in average daily weight gain. Within the RG test, no differences were observed in dry matter intake or average daily gain. The HE-RFI calves consumed less O2 (L/d) and produced less CO2 (L/d). Heart rate and HP were lower for HE-RFI calves compared with LE-RFI. Residual feed intake was correlated with HP (r = 0.48), O2 consumption (r = 0.48), CO2 production (r = 0.48), and heart rate (r = 0.40). No differences were observed in HP and gas exchanges between RG groups. Methane production was null in both groups. Eye temperature measured by thermography was 0.5°C greater in HE-RG than LE-RG calves. Differences in skin temperature between HE and LE calves were not observed at the other sites. These results support the hypothesis that calves are divergent for RFI, RG, and FE during preweaning and divergence tests are applicable during this phase. The face mask method described here is a useful tool for estimating differences in HP among phenotypically divergent RFI calves. Eye temperature measured by infrared thermography may have potential to screen phenotypically divergent RG calves.

RESUMEN

The objective of this study was to validate an electronic system for monitoring individual feeding and drinking behaviour and intake developed for young cattle housed in group. A total of 35 Holstein-Gyr crossbred heifers (BW: 180±52 kg; age: 121.5±32.5 days), fitted with an ear tag containing a unique passive transponder, were distributed in three groups of 12, 12 and 11 animals per period and had free access to 12 electronic feed bins and two electronic water bins (Intergado® Ltd). The dimensions of feed and water bins, as well as the sensors position were appropriate for young cattle. The system documented the visit frequency and duration, as well as the feed and water intakes, by recording the animal's identification tag, bin number, initial and final times of visits and the difference of feed/water weight at the start and end of each bin visit. Feed bins were monitored using time-lapse video recording over 4 days and the water bins were monitored over 6 days. For each feed bin, two feeding events were monitored using manual weighings with an external scale immediately before and after the animal's visit and the difference between them was assumed as feed intake (n=24 observations). For the water bins, 60 manual weighings were made. Video and manual weighing data were regressed on the electronic feeding and drinking behaviour and intake data to evaluate the system's precision and accuracy. The system showed high specificity (98.98% and 98.56% for the feed and water bins, respectively) and sensitivity (99.25% and 98.74%, respectively) for identifying an animal's presence or absence. Duration of feed and water bin visits as well as feed and water consumption per visit estimated by the system were highly correlated and precise compared with the observed video and manual weighing data (r 2=0.917, 0.963, 0.973 and 0.986, respectively). It was concluded that Intergado® system is a useful tool for monitoring feeding and drinking behaviour as well as water and feed intakes in young cattle housed in groups.

RESUMEN

Raman spectra of bis(l-histidinate)nickel(II) monohydrate crystal were obtained for pressures up to 9.5GPa. Our results show the disappearance of some of the Raman modes and the appearance of other modes. These modifications evidence that the sample undergoes phase transitions at around 0.8 and 3.2GPa. The role played by the Ni ions and hydrogen bonds in the dynamics of the phase transitions is discussed. Under decompression, down to atmospheric pressure, the original Raman spectra are recovered, showing that both phase transitions are fully reversible.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of genes encoding enzymes and other factors involved with carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in the liver of 2 genetic groups of dairy cows during the transition period. We analyzed the expression of glucose-6-phosphatase (G6PC), cytosolic phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK-C), methylmalonyl-CoA mutase (MUT), ß-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase-2 (BDH2), acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), carnitine palmitoyltransferase-2 (CPT2), 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCR), glucose transporter-2 (SLC2A2), and the transcription factor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARA). Blood concentrations of glucose, nonesterified fatty acids, and ß-hydroxybutyrate were also determined. Liver biopsies and blood samples were taken at d 15 prepartum and at d 6, 21, 36, 51, and 66 postpartum from Holsteins (n = 6) and F1 Holstein-Gir (n = 6) cows. Cows were kept under the same prepartum and postpartum management conditions. The results showed that the expression of G6PC, PEPCK-C, BDH2, ACC, CPT2, HMGCR, SLC2A2, and PPARA genes did not differ between genetic groups. Except for PEPCK-C, no interaction between genetic groups and the experimental period was observed. Within both groups of cows, G6PC and PEPCK-C gene expression decreased when comparing prepartum gene expression with 21 and 36 DIM, and increased in d 51 postpartum. MUT mRNA levels differed between the 2 genetic groups and displayed a significant increase after d 36 postpartum, whereas mRNA levels of HMGCR tended to increase when comparing d 21 and 36 to d 51 postpartum. Glucose concentrations also differed between genetic groups, being significantly higher in the plasma of F1 Holstein-Gir cows than in Holstein cows, but no differences were found within each group during the analysis period. ß-Hydroxybutyrate and nonesterified fatty acid concentrations did not differ between genetic groups, but displayed increased levels from prepartum to d 6 and 21 postpartum. Our results indicated that expression in the liver of genes involved with glucose and fatty acid metabolism were similar in both groups of cows and significant differences were observed between the 2 groups in the expression of MUT, a gene involved in propionate metabolism.

RESUMEN

We report an unusual case of obstructive fibrosis of the venous ring of Fürstenberg in all four quarters of the udder of a cow of the Girolando breed (3/8 Gir and 5/8 Dutch). The information was obtained through a review of medical records, anamnesis, and imaging methods such as theloscopy and ultrasonography. Histopathological analysis provided a definitive diagnosis.(AU)

A análise histopatológica forneceu o diagnóstico definitivo.(AU)

RESUMEN

This research reports a pressure dependent Raman study of the sorbic acid between 0.0 and 10.0GPa. The unpolarized Raman spectra were measured in the spectral range of 20-3000cm-1. The high-pressure Raman scattering study of the sorbic acid showed that it underwent a gradual, disordering process. At the room temperature and at the ambient pressure conditions, the crystal structure of the sorbic acid belongs to the monoclinic system with a C2/c (C2h6) space group. The pressure increase induced a higher disorder in the monoclinic unit cell, since a single bending mode, and only very broad stretching Raman modes are present at pressure of ~10GPa. Upon pressure release the high-pressure phase transforms directly into the ambient-pressure phase. The presence of the internal vibrational modes is a guarantee that the molecular structure is maintained. Beyond this, the presence of external modes shows that the crystal has a memory to reverse the process and suggest that the crystal, which was in high disorder (broad Raman bands), does not suffer decomposition in the crystalline structure. The DFT calculations for the sorbic acid were performed in order to understand the vibrational properties. The theoretical study showed that the volume of the unit cell and beta angle decrease significatively when passing from the 0.0GPa to 8.0GPa. The decreases in the volume and beta angle of this particular unit cell were supposed to induce the larger increase in the bandwidths of the observed bands, pointing to some disorder in the monoclinic phase.
