RESUMEN

Epiphytic and rupicolous plants inhabit environments with limited water resources. Such plants commonly use Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM), a photosynthetic pathway that accumulates organic acids in cell vacuoles at night, so reducing their leaf water potential and favouring water absorption. Foliar water uptake (FWU) aids plant survival during drought events in environments with high water deficits. We hypothesized that FWU represents a strategy employed by epiphytic and rupicolous orchids for water acquisition and that CAM will favour increased water absorption. We examined 6 epiphyte, 4 terrestrial and 6 rupicolous orchids that use C3 (n = 9) or CAM (n = 7) pathways. Five individuals per species were used to evaluate FWU, structural characteristics and leaf water balance. Rupicolous species with C3 metabolism had higher FWU than other species. FWU (Cmax and k) could be related to succulence, SLM and leaf RWC. The results indicated that high orchid leaf densities favoured FWU, as area available for water storage increases with leaf density. Structural characteristics linked to water storage (e.g. high RWC, succulence), on the other hand, could limit leaf water absorption by favouring high internal leaf water potentials. Epiphytic, rupicolous and terrestrial orchids showed FWU. Rupicolous species had high levels of FWU, probably through absorption from mist. However, succulence in plants with CAM appears to mitigate FWU.

The purpose of this in-vitro study was to compare trueness, 3D deviation, production time and costs of milled and 3D-printed resin single crowns. A total of 20 CAD-CAM resin single crowns were fabricated from 10 digital wax patterns designed on 10 tooth preparations available in a reference model. Standardized control linear measurements were performed with a CAD software. Each STL file was then used to fabricate two resins crowns - one milled and one 3D-printed. All crowns underwent physical linear measurements using a digital caliper. The crowns were then scanned using an intraoral scanner for assessing 3D deviation. Finally, time to produce a single crown, as well as costs and production rates of both methods were also compared. Both CAM methods did not present statistically significant differences in linear measurements, as compared to controls (P⟩.05). Furthermore, 3D-printed crowns had significantly greater deviations in cervical margins (P=.032) and occlusal surfaces (P=.041), as compared with milled crowns. Finally, 3D-printing took significantly longer to produce one single crown (P=.001), but with a cheaper and higher production rate than milling. These findings suggest that milling devices produce resin single crowns with smaller 3D deviations but more expensive costs, as compared with low-cost 3D printers.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study is to analyze the mortality trend in indigenous peoples in Brazil. STUDY DESIGN: The study design used is an ecological study. METHODS: A study carried out with data from the indigenous deaths recorded on the Mortality Information System in Brazil between 2000 and 2016. The Prais Winsten regression was used to analyze the trend of overall mortality in the country and in its geopolitical regions, in addition to the trend by sex, age groups, and groups of basic causes of death. RESULTS: Of all deaths, 47,806 indigenous deaths were recorded between 2000 and 2016. The majority was male (56.5%) and 27.2% in children aged younger than 5 years. The major groups of causes of death were the circulatory diseases (15.8%) and external causes (14.9%). The affections of the perinatal period (23.7%) and infectious and parasitic diseases (18.5%) were the main causes in children aged younger than 5 years. The indigenous mortality rates showed an increasing trend in the country (annual percent change [APC] = 2.37%). There was growth in both sexes and in most age ranges. Mortality from external causes (APC = 4.71%), neoplasms (APC = 4.67%), and respiratory causes (APC = 4.14%) also presented growth. The infectious and parasitic causes and genitourinary causes showed a stable trend in the studied period. CONCLUSIONS: The increasing trend of mortality in the analyzed variables showed disparities between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples in Brazil, pointing to the need for greater investment in basic social sectors, such as health, education, housing, and sanitation.

The study evaluated sonographic and serologic exams performed for early (20 to 30d) diagnosis of pregnancy. One hundred-twenty (n= 120) bovine recipients were synchronized (estrous=D0) and timed embryo transferred (TET, D7) with fresh in vitro produced embryos. In the first trial (n= 46), diagnosis of pregnancy was performed on day 20 (D20) by detecting CL blood flow (BF) and by Pregnancy-Associated Glycoproteins (PAGs) serology. In the second trial (n= 30), pregnancy diagnosis was performed on D25 by ultrasound visualization of uterine contents and by PAGs serology. In the last trial, PAG's serology was performed on D30. Ultrasonographic detection of the uterine contents and embryo viability performed on D30 (DG30) was considered the gold standard. The PROC FREQ procedure was used to test the agreement between diagnostic methods. On D20, the Doppler ultrasonography of the CL had showed high sensitivity (100%), but only moderate specificity (53.3%). On the same day, serologic diagnostic had no agreement (k= -0.08, P< 0.46) with the gold standard, with very low sensitivity (6.3%). However, the sensitivity of the serologic exam increased dramatically (from 6.3 to 100%) from D20 to D25, and it contributed to detect false negatives from the ultrasound diagnosis, improving the overall accuracy from 90% to 96.7%.(AU)


O estudo foi planejado para correlacionar exames ultrassonográficos e sorológicos realizados para o diagnóstico precoce (20 a 30d) de gestação. Cento e vinte (n= 120) receptoras bovinas foram sincronizadas (estro=D0), e embriões frescos produzidos in vitro foram transferidos em tempo fixo (TETF, D7). No experimento 1 (n= 46), o diagnóstico de gestação foi realizado no D20, pela detecção do fluxo sanguíneo do CL e pela sorologia de glicoproteínas associadas à gestação (PAGs). No experimento 2 (n= 30), a detecção da gestação foi realizada por meio da visualização do conteúdo do útero e também pela sorologia para PAGs. No experimento 3, a sorologia para PAGs foi realizada no D30. Em todos os experimentos, a visualização ultrassonográfica da vesícula e da viabilidade embrionária, realizada no D30, foi considerada padrão-ouro. O procedimento PROC FREQ testou o nível de concordância dos métodos diagnósticos. No D20, o diagnóstico baseado na vascularização do CL mostrou alta sensibilidade (100%) e apenas moderada especificidade (53,3%). Nesse mesmo dia, o diagnóstico sorológico não apresentou concordância (k=-0,08, P<0,46) com o padrão-ouro, além de baixa sensibilidade (6,3%). No entanto, a sensibilidade do exame sorológico aumentou drasticamente (6,3 para 100%) do D20 para o D25, contribuindo para detectar falsos negativos diagnosticados pela ultrassonografia, melhorando a acurácia (90 para 96,7%).(AU)

Pituitary adenomas account for 10-15% of primary intracranial tumors. Growth hormone (GH)-secreting adenomas account for 13% of all pituitary adenomas and cause acromegaly. These tumors can be aggressive, invade surrounding structures and are highly recurrent. The objective of this study was to evaluate E-cadherin, Slug and neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) expression in GH-secreting pituitary adenomas and its relationship to tumor invasiveness. A cross-sectional study of patients who underwent hypophysectomy due to GH-secreting pituitary adenoma from April 2007 to December 2014 was carried out. The medical records were reviewed to collect clinical data. Immediately after surgery, tumor samples were frozen in liquid nitrogen and stored in a biofreezer at -80°C for assessment of E-cadherin 1 (CDH1), SLUG (SNAI2), and NCAM (NCAM1) by real-time PCR. The samples were fixed in formalin and embedded in paraffin for immunohistochemical analysis of E-cadherin and NCAM. Thirty-five patients with acromegaly were included in the study. Of these, 65.7% had invasive tumors. Immunohistochemically, E-cadherin was expressed in 96.7% of patients, and NCAM in 80% of patients. There was no statistically significant relationship between tumor grade or invasiveness and immunohistochemical expression of these markers. Regarding gene expression, 50% of cases expressed CDH1, none expressed SNAI2, and 53.3% expressed NCAM1. There was no statistically significant relationship between tumor grade or invasiveness and gene expression of CDH1, SNAI2, and NCAM1. The absence of Slug overexpression and of E-cadherin and NCAM suppression suggests that expression of these markers is not associated with tumor invasiveness in GH-secreting pituitary adenomas.

We assessed the suitability of targeted removal as a means for tuberculosis (TB) control on an intensely managed Eurasian wild boar (Sus scrofa) hunting estate. The 60km2 large study area included one capture (treatment) site, one control site, and one release site. Each site was fenced. In the summers of 2012, 2013 and 2014, 929 wild boar were live-captured on the treatment site. All wild boar were micro-chipped and tested using an animal side lateral flow test immediately after capture in order to detect antibodies to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC). The wild boar were released according to their TB status: Seropositive individuals onto the release site (hunted after summer), and seronegative individuals back onto the treatment site. The annual summer seroprevalence of antibodies to the MTC declined significantly in live-captured wild boar piglets from the treatment site, from 44% in 2012 to 27% in 2013 (a reduction of 39%). However, no significant further reduction was recorded in 2014, during the third capture season. Fall-winter MTC infection prevalence was calculated on the basis of the culture results obtained for hunter-harvested wild boar. No significant changes between hunting seasons were recorded on either the treatment site or the control site, and prevalence trends over time were similar on both sites. The fall-winter MTC infection prevalence on the release site increased significantly from 40% in 2011-2012 to 64% in 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 (60% increase). Recaptures indicated a persistently high infection pressure. This experiment, the first attempt to control TB in wild boar through targeted removal, failed to reduce TB prevalence when compared to the control site. However, it generated valuable knowledge on infection pressure and on the consequences of translocating TB-infected wild boar.

Meningiomas are common, usually benign tumors of the central nervous system that have a high rate of post-surgical recurrence or regrowth. We determined expression of the proteins merlin, NDRG2, ERBB2, and c-MYC in meningiomas using immunohistochemistry and assessed relationships between protein expression and gender, age, tumor grade, and recurrence or regrowth. The study sample comprised 60 patients, (44 women and 16 men) with a mean age of 53.2 ± 12.7 years. Tumors were classified as grade I (n=48) or grades II and III (n=12). Expression of merlin, NDRG2, ERBB2, and c-MYC was not significantly different statistically with relation to gender, age, or meningioma recurrence or regrowth. Merlin was expressed in 100% of the cases. No statistically significant difference between tumor grade and recurrence or regrowth was identified. Statistically significant differences were identified between the mean age of patients with grade I (54.83 ± 11.60) and grades II and III (46.58 ± 15.08) meningiomas (P=0.043), between strong c-MYC expression and grades II and III (P<0.001), and between partial surgical resection and tumor recurrence or regrowth (P<0.001). These findings reveal the lower mean age among grades II and III meningioma patients than grade I patients, the influence of the protein merlin on tumorigenesis, the association of c-MYC with aggressive meningiomas, and that partial surgical resection is associated with tumor recurrence or regrowth.

Background: ADAMTS are metalloproteases with disintegrin and thrombospondin motifs. They are secreted proteases playing a role in biological processes such as inflammation, angiogenesis, and urogenital development. ADAMTS have specific substrates, such as the proteoglycans (PG) versican, aggrecan, and brevican. Despite data indicating a role of ADAMTS in tumor invasion and metastases, effects played by these molecules in cancer progression are still controversial. In ovarian cancer, the importance of ADAMTS gene mutations was recently described and related to chemotherapy outcome. Objective: To analyze protein levels of ADAMTS-1, -4, and -5, and TIMP-3 in human ovarian cancer classified as benign, borderline, or malignant. We also assessed the expression of the ADAMTS substrates aggrecan, brevican, and versican in these neoplasms. Correlations between overall survival and protein expression were performed. Methods: Tumors were classified according to the WHO Classification of Tumors of Female Reproductive Organs. Protein and PG expression was studied by immunohistochemistry. Differences in labeling were analyzed by percent measurements of stained areas. Results: ADAMTS-1, ADAMTS-5, and its tissue inhibitor TIMP-3 are increased in borderline and malignant tumors compared to benign neoplasms. Aggrecan and versican levels were increased in malignant subtypes compared to benign ovarian cancer. Higher ADAMTS-1, TIMP-3, and versican expression was associated with a shorter overall survival. Conclusions: Comparison of protease, TIMP-3, and substrate expression showed that in malignant tumors all ADAMTS and TIMP-3 expression levels were significantly raised compared to the substrates studied.

We aimed to investigate the presence and implications of a mutated p53 protein and dopamine D2 receptor in a representative series of meningiomas and to correlate these findings with age, gender, tumor grade, and recurrence. Tumor tissue samples of 157 patients diagnosed with meningioma (37 males and 120 females, mean age 53.6±14.3 years) who underwent surgical resection between 2003 and 2012 at our institution were immunohistochemically evaluated for the presence of p53 protein and dopamine D2 receptor and were followed-up to analyze tumor recurrence or regrowth. Tumors were classified as grades I (n=141, 89.8%), II (n=13, 8.3%), or grade III (n=3, 1.9%). Dopamine D2 receptor and p53 protein expression were positive in 93.6% and 49.7% of the cases, respectively. Neither of the markers showed significant expression differences among different tumor grades or recurrence or regrowth statuses. Our findings highlight the potential role of p53 protein in meningioma development and/or progression. The high positivity of dopamine D2 receptor observed in this study warrants further investigation of the therapeutic potential of dopamine agonists in the evolution of meningiomas.

Iridium-based compounds are materials of great interest in the production of highly efficient organic light emitting diodes and several other applications. However, these organometallic compounds present relative low stability due to photodegradation processes still not well understood. In this work we investigated paramagnetic states induced by UV photoexcitation on iridium(III) bis[(4,6-fluorophenyl)-pyridinato-N,C2']picolinate (FIrpic) and iridium(III)-tris(2-phenylpyridine) (Ir(ppy)3) complexes dispersed in different polymeric matrices by electron spin resonance (ESR). Photogenerated charged states with relatively strong hyperfine interactions were observed and attributed to matrix/complex charge-transfer processes. Measurements of the signal amplitude decay after photoexcitation interruption were performed as a function of temperature. The photoinduced centers are thermally activated with energy barrier between 0.3 and 0.6 eV. Electronic structure calculations suggest that the signals observed by ESR are associated with metastable negatively charged Ir complexes distorted structures.

Alternative technologies used to treat effluents from the petroleum industry have advanced in recent decades through the development of new physicochemical processes. Electrochemical processes such as electroflotation stand out among these advances. However, one problem remains unsolved-cathodic incrustation. This problem can increase the energy cost to maintain and operate the necessary equipment. The aim of this study is to minimize the incrustation in electrochemical cells used for the electroflotation of saline water produced by the oil industry via ultrasonic transducers operating at a frequency of 24 kHz. The optimal operating cycle of these transducers was found to occur during the electrochemical production of H2. The transducer efficiency in reducing cathodic incrustation was evaluated using the combined mass transfer coefficient (kd(g)‾). The reduction of cathodic incrustation was evaluated using the water hardness and incrustation indices from a synthetic solution with a composition similar to seawater. Finally we analyzed the morphology of the cathodic incrustation and identified its elements using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and EDS, respectively. One can conclude that the use of these devices can significantly reduce the cathodic incrustation. Enhanced performance can be achieved with improvements in the quality of the materials used, their geometry and the assembly design of the transducers.

Luminescent materials containing europium ions are investigated for different optical applications. They can be obtained using bio-macromolecules, which are promising alternatives to synthetic polymers based on the decreasing oil resources. This paper describes studies of the DNA- and Agar-europium triflate luminescent membranes and its potential technological applications are expanded to electroluminescent devices. Polarized optical microscopy demonstrated that the samples are birefringent with submicrometer anisotropy. The X-ray diffraction analysis revealed predominantly amorphous nature of the samples and the atomic force microscopy images showed a roughness of the membranes of 409.0 and 136.1 nm for the samples of DNA10Eu and Agar1.11Eu, respectively. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of the DNA(n)Eu membranes with the principal lines at g ≈ 2.0 and g ≈ 4.8 confirmed uniform distribution of rare earth ions in a disordered matrix. Moreover, these strong and narrow resonance lines for the samples of DNA(n)Eu when compared to the Agar(n)Eu suggested a presence of paramagnetic radicals arising from the DNA matrix. The emission spectra suggested that the Eu3+ ions occupy a single local environment in both matrices and the excitation spectra monitored around the Eu emission lines pointed out that the Eu3+ ions in the Agar host were mainly excited via the broad band component rather than by direct intra-4f(6) excitation, whereas the opposite case occurred for the DNA-based sample.

AIM: Evaluate the IS6110-Taqman system performance in sputum samples from patients with pulmonary tuberculosis from health services in north-eastern Brazil as a diagnostic laboratory tool for pulmonary tuberculosis. METHODS AND RESULTS: 165 sputum samples from respiratory symptomatic patients were evaluated in the IS6110-TaqMan assay: 66 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and 99 without TB. When the IS6110-TaqMan assay was evaluated using culture and/or clinical response to the specific treatment as the gold standard, IS6110-TaqMan assay obtained a sensitivity of 87.9% and specificity of 98%. The performance of IS6110-TaqMan assay was also evaluated with the sputum smear microscopy, resulting in a sensitivity of 79.7% and specificity 94.8%. CONCLUSIONS: The IS6110-TaqMan was rapid, sensitive and specific for the diagnosis of pulmonary TB. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: IS6110-TaqMan assay is a promising auxiliary tool for the diagnosis of pulmonary TB when used in conjunction with routine laboratory tests, clinical and epidemiological criteria of the patient, thus increasing the sensitivity and specificity of diagnosis.

In this work we report results of continuous wave (CW) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy of vanadium oxide nanotubes. The observed EPR spectra are composed of a weak well-resolved spectrum of isolated V(4+) ions on top of an intense and broad structure-less line shape, attributed to spin-spin exchanged V(4+) clusters. With the purpose to deconvolute the structured weak spectrum from the composed broad line, a new approach based on the Krylov basis diagonalization method (KBDM) is introduced. It is based on the discrimination between broad and sharp components with respect to a selectable threshold and can be executed with few adjustable parameters, without the need of a priori information on the shape and structure of the lines. This makes the method advantageous with respect to other procedures and suitable for fast and routine spectral analysis, which, in conjunction with simulation techniques based on the spin Hamiltonian parameters, can provide a full characterization of the EPR spectrum. Results demonstrate and characterize the coexistence of two V(4+) species in the nanotubes and show good progress toward the goal of obtaining high fidelity deconvoluted spectra from complex signals with overlapping broader line shapes.

INTRODUCTION: This study proposes three methodologies to define artificial neural network models through genetic algorithms (GAs) to predict the next-day hourly average surface ozone (O(3)) concentrations. GAs were applied to define the activation function in hidden layer and the number of hidden neurons. METHODS: Two of the methodologies define threshold models, which assume that the behaviour of the dependent variable (O(3) concentrations) changes when it enters in a different regime (two and four regimes were considered in this study). The change from one regime to another depends on a specific value (threshold value) of an explanatory variable (threshold variable), which is also defined by GAs. The predictor variables were the hourly average concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxide, nitrogen dioxide (NO(2)), and O(3) (recorded in the previous day at an urban site with traffic influence) and also meteorological data (hourly averages of temperature, solar radiation, relative humidity and wind speed). The study was performed for the period from May to August 2004. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Several models were achieved and only the best model of each methodology was analysed. In threshold models, the variables selected by GAs to define the O(3) regimes were temperature, CO and NO(2) concentrations, due to their importance in O(3) chemistry in an urban atmosphere. CONCLUSION: In the prediction of O(3) concentrations, the threshold model that considers two regimes was the one that fitted the data most efficiently.

O melão de caroá é da família das curcubitáceas encontrada de forma nativa na região do Recôncavo Baiano, onde é muito utilizada pela medicina popular para diversas enfermidades, porém é espécie muito pouco explorada pela pesquisa. O trabalho teve por objetivo estudar diferentes substratos para avaliar o índice de germinação e vigor de sementes de melão de caroá (Sicana odorifera) na produção de mudas. Utilizaram-se como substratos areia lavada, areia lavada com húmus de minhoca (2:1) e substrato comercial Plantmax®. Foram realizadas as seguintes avaliações: teste de germinação, índice de velocidade de emergência (IVE), diâmetro de haste, altura de planta, comprimento da raiz, massa seca da raiz, haste e folhas. O substrato comercial Plantmax®promoveu melhor desempenho das sementes em relação aos demais, porém, o mais adequado e de baixo custo para produção de mudas através de sementes de melão de caroá (Sicana odorifera) foi a mistura de areia lavada e húmus de minhoca na proporção 2:1.


Caroá melon is a curcubitaceae found in its native form in the Recôncavo Region of Bahia, where it is used by popular medicine for many diseases. However, this species is little explored in research. The objective of the present work was to study different substrates in order to evaluate the germination index and seed vigor in caroá melon (Sicana odorifera) during seedling production. The following substrates were used: washed sand, sand washed with worm humus (2:1) and commercial substrate, Plantmax®.The following evaluations were carried out: germination test, speed of germination index (SGI), stem diameter, plant height, root length and root, stem and leaf dry matter. The commercial substrate Plantmax® presented the best performance compared to the others; however, the most adequate and least costly in seedling production using caroá melon (Sicana odorífera) seeds, was the mixture of washed sand and worm humus in the 2:1 ratio.

The aim of the present work is to investigate the possibility of using the properties of the thermoluminescent emission (TL) of Brazilian natural topaz for dosimetric applications. Topaz is an aluminium fluorsilicate with general composition of Al2(SiO4)(F,OH)2 found with relative abundance in Brazil and in other parts of the world. Topaz from Santo Antonio do Jacinto, Minas Gerais. Brazil, was used in this work, in the form of pellets of topaz mixed with Teflon and composites made with topaz embedded in a glass matrix. The TL sensitivity was tested between 10(-4) and 10(4) Gy. The TL peak intensity increases with the dose before saturation, which occurs around 2 kGy. The peak intensity showed a strong dependence with radiation energy. The effect of visible light and the behaviour of the TL signals after successive irradiation-reading-annealing cycles are presented and discussed.
