Fenthion and parathion are two representative kinds of organophosphorus pesticides and widely used in agriculture. They are directly or indirectly released into the atmosphere by spraying or volatilization processes. However, their heterogeneous reactivity toward OH radicals has not yet been well understood. Therefore, this work investigated the heterogeneous kinetics of the OH-initiated degradation of surface-bound fenthion and parathion using a flow reactor. The results showed that OH radicals played an important role in the atmospheric degradation of fenthion and parathion. Their average rate constants were (7.20 ± 0.77) × 10-12 and (10.40 ± 0.60) × 10-12 cm3/(mol· sec) at a relative humidity (RH) and temperature of 35% and 20 °C, respectively, suggesting that they have relatively short lifetimes in the atmosphere. In addition, a negative RH dependence and a positive temperature dependence of the rate constants were observed. The Arrhenius expressions of fenthion and parathion were k2 = (1.34 ± 0.48) × 10-9exp[-(1432.59 ± 105.29)/T] and k2 = (1.96 ± 1.38) × 10-9exp[-(1619.98 ± 222.02)/T], respectively, and their overall activation energy was estimated to be (11.88 ± 0.87) and (13.48 ± 1.83) kJ/mol. The experimental results will update the kinetic data of fenthion and parathion in the atmosphere and be helpful to further understand their atmospheric transportation processes.

BACKGROUNDS: Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness. Apoptosis of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) is an important mechanism of glaucomatous optic injury. Rho kinase expression is significantly increased in apoptotic RGCs. This study aimed to investigate the role of RhoA, a Rho GTPase, on the survival of RGCs and further to explore its potential therapeutic applications. METHODS: RGCs were treated with siRhoA for 24 hours in vitro. Knockdown of RhoA was confirmed with quantitative RT-PCR. Oxidative stress was induced by treating the RGCs with 200 µM of H2O2 for 1 hour, and apoptosis of RGCs was quantified with TUNEL assay in situ, and with flow cytometry. The mRNA expression levels of RhoA, Nogo receptor, caspase 3 and Bcl-2 were evaluated by quantitative RT-PCR, and the protein levels of RhoA, ROCK1, ROCK2, Nogo receptor, caspase 3 and Bcl-2 were evaluated by Western blot. We found siRhoA treatment efficiently downregulated the expression of RhoA in RGCs and protected against H2O2-induced injury in RGCs in vitro. Apoptosis of RGC cells under oxidative stress was quantified in situ using TUNEL assay and confirmed with flow cytometry (FCM). RESULTS: With the knockdown of RhoA, the expression of ROCK1, ROCK2, Nogo Receptor, Casepase-3 were decreased, while the expression of Bcl-2 was increased in both mRNA and protein level. Our data indicated that siRhoA prevented H2O2-induced apoptosis in RGC cells by modulating the RhoA/ROCK pathway. CONCLUSION: The results suggested that siRhoA may exert potentially effective neuroprotection for RGCs by reducing injury.

To describe the epidemiology, clinical and social characteristics, management, and outcomes of patients with secondary glaucoma in Central China, a total of 1,129 cases (1,158 eyes) among 710 males (62.89%) and 419 females (37.11%) were analyzed. The mean age was 53.75 ± 17.11 years. The New Rural Cooperative Medical System (NCMS) played the most important role in reimbursement (60.32%) for secondary glaucoma-related medical expenses. The predominant occupation was "farmer" (53.41%). Neovascularization and trauma were the leading causes of secondary glaucoma. Cases of trauma-induced glaucoma decreased substantially during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. An education level of senior high school or above was uncommon. Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation was the most commonly performed surgery. At the final follow-up, the overall intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with vascular disease- and trauma-related secondary glaucoma was 19.53 ± 10.20 mmHg, 20.26 ± 11.75 mmHg, and 16.90 ± 6.72 mmHg, while the mean visual acuity (VA) was 0.33 ± 0.32, 0.34 ± 0.36, and 0.43 ± 0.36. In 814 (70.29%) eyes, the VA was < 0.01. Effective preventive measures for at-risk populations, increased NCMS coverage and the promotion of higher education are necessary. These findings will help ophthalmologists detect secondary glaucoma early and manage it in a timely manner.

Background: Premature rupture of membranes (PROM) is a common cause of extremely premature infants (EPIs) and also leads to adverse preterm complications. However, the effect of PROM on EPIs remains contradictory. This study used propensity score matching (PSM) to adjust the baseline characteristics to explore the impact of PROM on clinical outcomes of extremely premature infants (EPIs). Methods: Medical data of 470 EPIs at gestational age < 28weeks who received prenatal examination in our hospital between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2020 were analyzed retrospectively. According to the presence or absence of PROM, they were divided into a PROM group and a non-PROM group. Ten covariates including birth weight, male sex, artificial conception, cesarean delivery, 5-min Apgar score ≤ 7, oligohydramnios, gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, antenatal steroid use, and complete steroid treatment were matched 1:1 by PSM. The major complication occurrence and mortality during hospitalization were compared between the two groups by t-test, nonparametric test or x 2 test. Results: Among the 470 infants enrolled, 157 (33.4%) were in the PROM group and 313 in the no-PROM group. After matching the ten confounding factors,276 cases were successfully enrolled. The incidence of early pulmonary hypertension (EPH) and severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in the PROM group were higher than those in the no-PROM group [44.2% (61/138) vs. 29.0% (40/138); 34.8% (48/138) vs. 21.7% (30/138), x 2 = 6.886 and 5.790, both P < 0.05]. However, there was no significant difference in the in-hospital mortality and the incidence of other major complications between the two groups (all P > 0.05). Conclusions: PROM increased the incidence of EPH and severe ROP in EPI, but had no significant impact on in-hospital mortality, length of hospital stay, and the incidence of other complications.

The heterogeneous oxidation of SO2 by NO2 has been extensively proposed as an important pathway of sulfate production during haze events in China. However, the kinetics and mechanism of oxidation of SO2 by NO2 on the surface of complex particles remain poorly understood. Here, we systematically explore the mechanism and kinetics of the reaction between SO2 and NO2 on diesel black carbon (DBC) under light irradiation. The experimental results prove that DBC photochemistry can not only significantly promote the heterogeneous reduction of NO2 to produce HONO via transferring photoinduced electrons but also indirectly promote OH radical formation. These reduction products of NO2 as well as NO2 itself greatly promote the heterogeneous oxidation of SO2 on DBC. NO2 oxidation, HONO oxidation, and the surface photo-oxidation process are proven to be three major surface oxidation pathways of SO2. The kinetics results indicate that the surface photooxidation pathway accounts for the majority of the total SO2 uptake (∼63%), followed by the HONO oxidation pathway (∼27%) and direct oxidation by NO2 (∼10%). This work highlights the significant synergistic roles of DBC, NO2, and light irradiation in enhancing the atmospheric oxidation capacity and promoting the heterogeneous formation of sulfate.

Although the air quality in China has been greatly improved in recent years, the air pollution remains severe. The annual mean PM2.5 concentrations have not met the second grade of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards in China and are still much higher than the guideline value of the World Health Organization. Thus, the PM2.5 concentration needs to be further reduced. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is an important component of PM2.5 and has an important impact on air quality, global climate change, and human health. Therefore, understanding the formation mechanism of SOA is an important basis to control SOA and further reduce PM2.5. As an important precursor of SOA, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be oxidized by oxidants such as ·OH, NO3[KG-*2/3]·, Cl·, and O3 to generate low volatile organic compounds and further to form SOA through gas-particle partitioning, homogeneous nucleation, aqueous phase reaction, and heterogeneous reaction processes. The formation of SOA can be affected by many factors, such as the types and initial concentrations of VOCs, VOCs/NOx ratios, relative humidity (RH), temperature (T), seed aerosols, oxidants, aqueous phase process, and photochemical process. The observed SOA concentration is always underestimated by air quality models because a comprehensive understanding of the complexity of SOA chemical composition and formation mechanisms is still lacking, especially that under the highly complex air pollution conditions in China. Therefore, the formation mechanism and influencing factors of SOA under highly complex air pollution conditions have become an important concern in the field of atmospheric sciences. Recently, much laboratory work has focused on the formation of SOA under complex conditions. The research progress of SOA formation from different anthropogenic VOCs are reviewed here, and the methods used and the impact of different influencing factors on SOA formation are introduced. Finally, the key scientific issues that exist in the research of the SOA mechanism at present are put forward, and the future research direction is projected.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the potential effects of 3% diquafosol (DQS) on tear film stability after glaucoma surgery. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed consecutive patients who underwent glaucoma surgery at the glaucoma division of the Henan Eye Institute from January 2020 to January 2021. Clinical parameters, including age, sex, intraocular pressure, and number of glaucoma medications, were tested. Tear film parameters, such as tear meniscus height (TMH), first and average noninvasive tear break-up time (FBUT and ABUT, respectively), and tear film lipid layer grade (TFLL), were evaluated using the Oculus Keratograph 5M. We investigated the differences in clinical and tear film parameters pre- and postoperatively. We compared the baseline and different time points after surgery between the DQS and HA groups and identified the factors associated with changes in the tear film at 8 weeks postoperatively. RESULTS: A total of 101 eyes were included. Early administration of DQS increased TMH, FBUT, ABUT, and TFLL after trabeculectomy (all p < 0.05). In addition, the DQS group showed significantly higher ABUT than the HA group (p < 0.05). DQS use served as an associated parameter for better TMH, FBUT, ABUT, and the TFLL (p < 0.05). DQS and preoperative FBUT were significant independent parameters of postoperative FBUT (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The present study showed that postoperative TMH, FBUT, ABUT, and TFLL significantly increased after early application of DQS, and the efficacy of ABUT was better than that of HA at the early stage in 8 weeks after trabeculectomy (p < 0.05).

Background: To preliminary explore the correlations among corneal biomechanical parameters, stiffness, and thickness in patients with ocular hypertension (OHT) before and after treatment with topical antiglaucoma medications. Methods: This was a retrospective study that included 35 eyes with newly diagnosed OHT. Axial length (AL), apical corneal thickness, and minimum corneal thickness were measured using Pentacam. The lengths, velocities, and times of the first and second corneal applanations (A1L, A1V, A1T, A2L, A2V, and A2T, respectively); the highest concavity radius; highest concavity peak distance (PDHC); highest concavity deformation amplitude (DAHC); highest concavity time (HCT); pachymetry (PACH); stress-strain index (SSI); stiffness parameter-A1 (SP-A1); deformation amplitude ratio (DA ratio); integrated radius (IR); Ambrosio's relational thickness horizontal (ARTh); corneal biomechanical index; noncorrected intraocular pressure (IOPnct); and biomechanically corrected IOP (bIOP) values were measured using the corneal visualization Scheimpflug technology (Corvis ST/CST). Results: After 5 weeks of treatment, Goldman applanation tonometer-IOP, IOPnct, bIOP, PACH, A1T, A2V, SSI, SP-A1, and ARTh decreased, but A1V, A2T, PDHC, DAHC, DA ratio, and IR increased significantly (all p < 0.05). SP-A1 and A1T were positively associated with premedication IOP and IOP changes, whereas A1V, A2T, PDHC, and IR were negatively associated (all p < 0.05). DAHC and DA ratio had significantly negative correlations with IOP variations. PDHC was found to be positively correlated with AL (p < 0.05). A positive relationship was noted between SP-A1 and HCT before medication (p < 0.05). Conclusions: SP-A1 was significantly and consistently associated with IOP. HCT might be correlated with SP-A1. SP-A1 and CST parameters could serve as potential biomarkers for evaluating OHT treatment efficacy.

Purpose: We aimed to describe the characteristics, epidemiology, management, and outcomes of glaucoma in pediatric patients in central China. Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed inpatients with pediatric glaucoma at Henan Provincial People's Hospital, Henan Eye Institute, and Henan Eye Hospital between 2017 and 2020. Results: Overall, 239 cases (276 eyes) of pediatric glaucoma in patients, comprising 87 girls (36.40%) and 152 boys (63.60%) were analyzed. The mean age was 6.65 ± 4.46, and 2.93% of the patients had a family history of glaucoma. Primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) was the most common type of glaucoma, followed by traumatic glaucoma in 8.33% of the patients, which was considered secondary glaucoma. The most common signs and symptoms were elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) and eye pain. Trabeculotomy (Trab) and microcatheter-assisted 360° trabeculotomy (MAT) combined with Trab were the most commonly performed surgeries. The IOP of patients with PCG, juvenile open-angle glaucoma (JOAG), and secondary glaucoma were 15.27 ± 7.48 mmHg, 17.16 ± 10.05, and 18.65 ± 8.55, respectively, at the final follow up. The rate of re-operations in patients with PCG, JOAG, and secondary glaucoma were 9.15%, 6.78%, and 4.69%, respectively. The mean visual acuity of the eyes with PCG, JOAG, and secondary glaucoma was 0.79 ± 0.68, 0.51 ± 0.48, and 0.53 ± 0.50, respectively. Conclusion: PCG, JOAG, and traumatic glaucoma were the most prevalent subtypes in patients with pediatric glaucoma in central China. Trab and MAT combined with Trab were the most common interventions used in this study. Pediatric amblyopia might require full attention during the entire treatment, especially after glaucoma surgery. Effective preventive measures and more public education on glaucoma prevention and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment is necessary.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a frequent complication of diabetes. Recent reports have showed that circular RNAs (circRNAs) play important roles in DR progression. Herein, the aim of this study was to explore the role and molecular mechanism of circ_NNT in DR process. METHODS: Human retinal pigment epithelial cells ARPE-19 were treated with high glucose (HG) in experimental group. The expression of circ_NNT, miR-320b, and TIMP3 (TIMP Metallopeptidase Inhibitor 3) were determined using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blot. In vitro experiments were conducted by 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU) assay, MTT assay, flow cytometry, Western blot, and ELISA. The binding interaction was confirmed using dual-luciferase reporter and pull-down assays. RESULTS: HG stimulation led to a decrease of circ_NNT and TIMP3 expression, and an increase of miR-320b expression in ARPE-19 cells. Functionally, circ_NNT up-regulation reversed HG-evoked apoptosis and inflammation in ARPE-19 cells. Mechanistically, circ_NNT acted as a sponge for miR-320b to elevate TIMP3 expression. Further rescue experiments showed that miR-320b elevation attenuated the protective effects of circ_NNT on HG-induced ARPE-19 cells. Moreover, inhibition of miR-320b protected ARPE-19 cells against HG-evoked apoptosis and inflammation, which were abolished by TIMP3 knockdown. CONCLUSION: Circ_NNT protected ARPE-19 cells against HG-evoked apoptosis and inflammation via elevating TIMP3 through sequestering miR-320b, indicating that up-regulation of circ_NNT might contribute to the inhibition of DR process.

Purpose: X-linked juvenile retinoschisis (XLRS), caused by mutations in the RS1 gene, is an X-linked recessive inherited disease that typically involves both eyes in the first 2 decades of life. Recently, the phenotype heterogeneity of this condition has drawn increasing attention. We reported various phenotypes caused by RS1 gene mutations in eleven patients from ten Chinese families. Methods: Data on the medical history of the patients from ten Han families of central China were collected. Ophthalmic examinations including best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), fundus photography, ultra-wide-angle sweep source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT), and electroretinography (ERG) were performed. Adaptive optics (AO) images were acquired to evaluate the cone photoreceptor mosaic when applicable. Venous blood of the probands and their family members was collected, and DNA was subjected to sequencing based on next-generation sequencing with a custom-designed targeted gene panel PS400 for inherited retinal diseases. Validation was performed by Sanger sequencing and cosegregation. Pathogenicity was determined in accordance with the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) guidelines. Results: Ten RS1 mutations, including eight missense mutations and two terminator mutations, were identified in 10 XLRS families. c.657C > A (p.C219X) was a novel mutation in this cohort. These patients showed a variety of clinical phenotypes, including fovea schisis, bullous retinoschisis, and macular or peripheral atrophy. Fifteen eyes of eight patients exhibited macular retinoschisis, and twelve eyes of seven patients exhibited peripheral retinoschisis. In addition, three patients showed asymmetrical fundus manifestations. Of importance, three patients without macular retinoschisis were misdiagnosed until genetic testing results were obtained. AO showed a decrease in cone density and loss of regularity in the cystic schisis macular of XLRS. Furthermore, the BCVA was associated with the photoreceptor inner segment and outer segment (IS/OS) thickness. Conclusion: With complicated clinical manifestations, a considerable portion of XLRS patients may present various phenotypes. It should be noted that asymmetry in fundus appearance in both eyes could lead to misdiagnosis easily. Thus, genetic testing is crucial for making a final diagnosis in those patients who are suspected of having amblyopia, bilateral or unilateral macular atrophy, or conditions presenting an asymmetric fundus appearance. In addition, the residual cone photoreceptor structure was critical for the maintenance of useful vision.

Methoxyphenols emitted from lignin pyrolysis are widely used as potential tracers for biomass burning, especially for wood burning. In the past ten years, their atmospheric reactivity has attracted increasing attention from the academic community. Thus, this work provides an extensive review of the atmospheric reactivity of methoxyphenols, including their gas-phase, particle-phase, and aqueous-phase reactions, as well as secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. Emphasis was placed on kinetics, mechanisms, and SOA formation. The reactions of methoxyphenols with OH and NO3 radicals were the predominant degradation pathways, which also had significant SOA formation potentials. The reaction mechanism of methoxyphenols with O3 is the cycloaddition of O3 to the benzene ring or unsaturated C═C bond, while H-abstraction and radical adduct formation are the main degradation channels of methoxyphenols by OH and NO3 radicals. Based on the published studies, knowledge gaps were pointed out. Future studies including experimental simulations and theoretical calculations of other representative kinds of methoxyphenols should be systematically carried out under complex pollution conditions. In addition, the ecotoxicity of their degradation products and their contribution to SOA formation from the atmospheric aging of biomass-burning plumes should be seriously assessed.

Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) plays a critical role in sustained haze pollution in megacities. Traditional observation of atmospheric aerosols usually analyzes the ambient organic aerosol (OA) but neglects the SOA formation potential (SOAFP) of precursors remaining in ambient air. Knowledge on SOAFP is still limited, especially in megacities suffering from frequent haze. In this study, the SOAFP of ambient air in urban Beijing was characterized at different pollution levels based on a two-year field observation using an oxidation flow reactor (OFR) system. Both OA and SOAFP increased as a function of ambient pollution level, in which increasing concentrations of precursor volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and decreasing atmospheric oxidation capacity were found to be the two main influencing factors. To address the role of the atmospheric oxidation capacity in SOAFP, a relative OA enhancement ratio (EROA = 1 + SOAFP/OA) and the elemental composition of the OA were investigated in this study. The results indicated that the atmospheric oxidation capacity was weakened and resulted in higher SOAFP on more polluted days. The relationship found between SOAFP and the atmospheric oxidation capacity could be helpful in understanding changes in SOA pollution with improving air quality in the megacities of developing countries.

Purpose: To study the association between axial length (AL) and the thickness of the lens, retina, choroid, and cone density with swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) and an adaptive optics (AO) fundus camera. Design: A prospective cross-sectional study. Methods: This study included 136 eyes in 68 subjects. SS-OCT was used to quantify the thickness of the lens, ganglion cell complex (GCC) layer, inner nuclear layer (INL), outer retinal layer (ORL), and choroid layer. Adaptive optics was used to quantify spatial features of the cone photoreceptors, including density, spacing, regularity, and dispersion. The associations among the AL and the thickness of lens, retina, choroid, and cone features were evaluated with linear regression. Results: With the severity of myopia, the increased AL was associated with thinning of the lens (P < 0.001, 95% CI: -100.42 to -49.76). The thickness of the ORL and choroid decreased significantly (all P < 0.001), whereas the thickness of the GCC and INL decreased only in the outer ring (both P < 0.01). There was a significant correlation between the cone density/spacing and AL (both P < 0.001). Although cone density was reduced from 25,160/mm2 to 19,134/mm2 in the inner region and from 17,458/mm2 to 13,896/mm2 in the outer region, the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/20 or greater. Conclusions: We found that the lens thickness (LT), ORL, and cone density decreased in myopia. While decreasing cone density and ORL thickness should be related to axial elongation, decreasing of LT might imply intrinsic physical accommodation. These results provide further morphological changes of myopia.

This study is to test the feasibility of using trans-pars-planar illumination for ultra-wide field pediatric fundus photography. Fundus examination of the peripheral retina is essential for clinical management of pediatric eye diseases. However, current pediatric fundus cameras with traditional trans-pupillary illumination provide a limited field of view (FOV), making it difficult to access the peripheral retina adequately for a comprehensive assessment of eye conditions. Here, we report the first demonstration of trans-pars-planar illumination in ultra-wide field pediatric fundus photography. For proof-of-concept validation, all off-the-shelf optical components were selected to construct a lab prototype pediatric camera (PedCam). By freeing the entire pupil for imaging purpose only, the trans-pars-planar illumination enables a 200° FOV PedCam, allowing easy visualization of both the central and peripheral retina up to the ora serrata. A low-cost, easy-to-use ultra-wide field PedCam provides a unique opportunity to foster affordable telemedicine in rural and underserved areas.

Coniferyl alcohol derived from lignin pyrolysis, is a potential tracer for wood burning emissions, but its atmospheric stability toward OH radicals is not well known. In this work, the degradation kinetics of coniferyl alcohol by OH radicals was studied using a flow reactor at different OH concentrations, temperatures, and relative humidity (RH). The results showed that coniferyl alcohol could be degraded effectively by OH radials, and the average second-order rate constant (k2) was (11.6 ±â€¯0.5) × 10-12 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 at the temperature and RH of 25 °C and 40%, respectively. Additionally, increasing temperature facilitated the degradation of coniferyl alcohol and the Arrhenius equation could be expressed as k2 = (1.7 ±â€¯0.3) × 10-9exp [-(1480.2 ±â€¯55.6)/T] at 40% RH. Meanwhile, increasing RH had a negative impact on the degradation of coniferyl alcohol. According to the k2 obtained under different conditions, the atmospheric lifetime of coniferyl alcohol was in the range of 13.5 ±â€¯0.4 h to 22.9 ±â€¯1.4 h. The results suggested that the atmosphere lifetime of coniferyl alcohol was predominantly controlled by OH radicals.

Alkyl vinyl ethers are widely used as fuel additives. Despite this, their atmospheric chemistry and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation potentials are still not well-known under complex pollution conditions. In this work, we examined the impact of SO2, relative humidity (RH), and particle acidity on the formation and oxidation state (OSc) of SOA from butyl vinyl ether (BVE) ozonolysis. Increasing SO2 concentration produced a notable promotion of SOA formation and OSc due to the significant increase in H2SO4 particles and formation of more highly oxidized components. Increased RH in the presence of SO2 appeared to promote, suppress, and dominate the formation and OSc of SOA in the dry range (1-10%), low RH range (10-42%), and moderate RH range (42-64%), respectively. This highlights the importance of competition between H2O and SO2 in reacting with the stabilized Criegee intermediate in BVE ozonolysis at ambient RH. Increased particle acidity mainly contributed to the change in chemical composition of BVE-dominated SOA but not to SOA formation. The results presented here extend previous analysis of BVE-derived SOA and further aid our understanding of SOA formation potential of BVE ozonolysis under highly complex pollution conditions.

Current atmospheric quality models usually underestimate the level of ambient secondary organic aerosol (SOA), one of the possible reasons is that the precursors at different concentrations may undergo different oxidation processes and further affect SOA formation. Therefore, there is a need to perform more chamber studies to disclose the influence. In this work, SOA formation over a wide range of initial precursor concentrations (tens of ppb to hundreds of ppb levels) was investigated in a 30 m3 indoor smog chamber, and mainly through the analysis of multiple generations of VOCs detected from HR-ToF-PTRMS to expound the difference in the oxidation process between low and high precursor concentrations. Compared to high initial concentrations, gas-phase intermediates formed at low concentrations had a higher intensity by about one order of magnitude, and the low-volatility compounds also had a higher formation potential due to the competition between semi-volatile intermediates and precursors with oxidants. In addition, the formed SOA was more oxidized with higher f44 value (0.14 ±â€¯0.02) and more relevant to real atmosphere than that formed at high concentrations. This work should help to deeply understand SOA formation and improve the performance of air quality models for SOA simulation.

We demonstrated the feasibility of using holographic waveguide for eye tracking. A custom-built holographic waveguide, a 20 mm × 60 mm × 3 mm flat glass substrate with integrated in- and out-couplers, was used for the prototype development. The in- and out-couplers, photopolymer films with holographic fringes, induced total internal reflection in the glass substrate. Diffractive optical elements were integrated into the in-coupler to serve as an optical collimator. The waveguide captured images of the anterior segment of the eye right in front of it and guided the images to a processing unit distant from the eye. The vector connecting the pupil center (PC) and the corneal reflex (CR) of the eye was used to compute eye position in the socket. A 3D printed model eye, which has a similar corneal curvature of human eye and laser pointer tube holder at the tail for simulation of eye gaze on a screen, was used for prototype validation. The benchtop prototype demonstrated a linear relationship between the angular eye position and the PC/CR vector over a range of 60 horizontal degrees and 40 vertical degrees. This prototype eye tracker has a tracking accuracy of 0.72 degree and tracking precision of 0.50 degree over the whole tracking range. These results confirmed that the holographic waveguide technology could be a feasible platform for developing a wearable eye tracker. Further development can lead to a compact, see-through eye tracker, which allows continuous monitoring of eye movement during real life tasks, and thus benefits diagnosis of oculomotor disorders.
