Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease, with symptoms appearing in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. amyloid ß peptide (Aß) has been shown to deposit in the brain, causing oxidative stress and inflammation, leading to impaired memory and learning. Lactocaseibacillus fermentation can produce deglycosylated isoflavones with high physiological activity, which can scavenge free radicals, enhance total antioxidant capacity and inhibit oxidative inflammatory responses. Therefore, in this study, Lactocaseibacillus paracasei subsp. paracasei NTU101 (NTU101) fermented soybean milk and its extracts were used as test substances, and AD model rats were established by infusion of Aß40 in the brain for 28 days, and the preventive and ameliorating effects of NTU 101 fermented soymilk were discussed. Effects of soymilk and unfermented soymilk on AD, and explore its effects on AD. Main functional ingredients. The results showed that deglycosylated isoflavones in NTU101 fermented soybean milk improved AD symptoms. Mechanisms of actions include the inhibition of oxidative inflammation; reduction in the expression of risk factors for tau protein and apo E protein production, the deposition of Aß40 around the hippocampus, and the expression of TLR-2 and RAGE proteins in astrocytes and microglia; and improvement in the memory and learning ability.

Antioxidant therapies are of interest in the prevention and management of ocular disorders such as cataracts. Although an active area of interest, topical therapy with antioxidants for the treatment of cataracts is complicated by multiple ocular anatomical barriers, product stability, and solubility. Entrapment and delivery of antioxidants with poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles is a possible solution to these challenges, however, little is known regarding their effects in vitro or in vivo. Our first aim was to investigate the impact of blank and lutein loaded PLGA nanoparticles on viability and development of reactive oxygen species in lens epithelial cells in vitro. Photo-oxidative stress was induced by ultraviolet light exposure with cell viability and reactive oxygen species monitored. Next, an in vivo, selenite model was utilized to induce cataract formation in rodents. Eyes were treated topically with both free lutein and lutein loaded nanoparticles (LNP) at varying concentrations. Eyes were monitored for the development of anterior segment changes and cataract formation. The ability of nanodelivered lutein to reach the anterior segment of the eye was evaluated by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry of aqueous humor samples and liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (targeted LC-MS/MS) of lenses. LNP had a minimal impact on the viability of lens epithelial cells during the short exposure timeframe (24 h) and at concentrations < 0.2 µg LNP/µl. A significant reduction in the development of reactive oxygen species was also noted. Animals treated with LNPs at an equivalent lutein concentration of 1,278 µg /mL showed the greatest reduction in cataract scores. Lutein delivery to the anterior segment was confirmed through evaluation of aqueous humor and lens sample evaluation. Topical treatment was not associated with the development of secondary keratitis or anterior uveitis when applied once daily for one week. LNPs may be an effective in the treatment of cataracts.

The external jugular vein (EJV) has been commonly used for clinical procedures in veterinary medicine, while the internal jugular vein (IJV) has been used mainly for research. Limited literature regarding anatomical variants in both EJV and IJV is available. The objectives of this descriptive retrospective study were to identify the number of dogs with variations of the jugular veins in canine patients undergoing CT of the head and neck and characterize these variations. Of 1000 dogs, 193 dogs (19.3%) had anatomical variations. Six types of anatomical variations were identified. The most common Type I was the absence of the linguofacial vein (72.0%, n = 139), with the lingual, facial, and maxillary veins entering the EJV at a common branching point. Type II described a variable course of the EJV and IJV, which in some dogs resulted in the absence of the EJV (14.0%, n = 27). Type III was a variable anastomotic loop formed by the linguofacial or maxillary vein cranial or at the junction of the EJV (4.2%, n = 8). In Type IV, the EJV was either suspected to be aplastic or markedly reduced in diameter compared with the contralateral side just distal to its formation (3.6%, n = 7). Type V was found in only six dogs (3.1%) with unilateral differences in the diameter of the IJV. Six of 193 dogs had a combination of more than one variation (Type VI, 3.1%). Type I was significantly observed more frequently in meso- and dolichocephalic breeds. Type II was significantly observed more frequently in brachycephalic breeds.

BACKGROUND: Fibroblast growth factor 19 (FGF19) is an enterohepatic hormone the synthesis of which is stimulated by bile acid activation of the nuclear farnesoid X receptor (FXR) in ileal enterocytes. Increased production of FGF19 downregulates hepatocyte bile acid synthesis and gluconeogenesis, while concurrently upregulating hepatocyte glycogenesis and gallbladder (GB) filling. The physiologic impact of this regulatory cycle is illustrated in cholecystectomized humans, in whom the disturbed meal-related flux of GB bile decreases serum FGF19 concentrations. OBJECTIVE: Determine if serum FGF19 concentrations are lower in dogs with clinical GB mucoceles (GBMs) than in control dogs. ANIMALS: Seven dogs with GBM diagnosed using abdominal ultrasonography, biochemical markers, and GB histopathology. Forty-two control dogs without gastrointestinal or hepatobiliary disorders also were evaluated. Health status of controls was assessed by physical examination and diagnostic hematologic and biochemical test results. METHODS: Prospective cross-sectional study to compare fasting plasma or serum FGF19 concentrations between groups. Concentrations of FGF19 were quantified by a commercially available FGF19 ELISA. RESULTS: Concentrations of FGF19 were significantly lower in dogs with clinical GBM (median, 14.0 pg/mL; range, 12.8-67.2) than in control dogs (median, 145.3 pg/mL; range, 36.5-285.1). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: In dogs, GBM is associated with significantly decreased serum FGF19 concentrations. We speculate that this finding reflects compromised GB contraction and decreased enterohepatic circulation of bile flow. Subnormal FGF19 concentrations may influence bile acid synthesis and hepatic metabolism.

OBJECTIVE: Healthcare workers (HCWs) suffered from a heavy mental health burden during the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We aimed to explore the differences in sleep disturbance in three waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan among HCWs. Moreover, factors associated with sleep disturbances in the third wave were investigated. METHODS: This study, with three waves of cross-sectional surveys, recruited first-line and second-line HCWs. The level of sleep disturbance and related demographic variables were collected through self-report questionnaires. Differences in sleep disturbance across the three waves were compared with analysis of variance. Factors associated with the level of sleep disturbance were identified using univariate linear regression and further used for multivariate stepwise and bootstrap linear regression to identify the independent predictors. RESULTS: In total, 711, 560, and 747 HCWs were included in the first, second, and third waves, respectively. For first-line HCWs, sleep disturbance was significantly higher in the third wave than in the first wave. The level of sleep disturbance gradually increased across the three waves for all HCWs. In addition, sleep disturbance was associated with depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, anxiety about COVID-19, vaccine mistrust, and poorer physical and mental health among first-line HCWs. Among second-line HCWs, sleep disturbance was associated with younger age, depression, PTSD symptoms, lower preference for natural immunity, and poorer physical health. CONCLUSION: The current study identified an increase in sleep disturbance and several predictors among HCWs. Further investigation is warranted to extend the application and generalizability of the current study.

Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B27 is the genetic marker for ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Here, we generated induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from peripheral blood mononuclear cells of a male AS patient carrying HLA-B27 with syndesmophyte formation by using the Sendai-virus delivery system. The resulting iPSCs had a normal karyotype, expressed pluripotent markers, and could differentiate into three germ layers. This cellular model will provide a platform for studying pathological mechanisms of new bone formation in HLA-B27 positive AS patients.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the effects of repeated steam sterilization cycles on the biomechanical properties of surgical screws. METHODS: 42 3.5-mm and 42 2.0-mm self-tapping, cortical screws were divided into 3 groups per size and underwent autoclave sterilization for 1 (G1), 50 (G50), or 100 (G100) cycles and testing from August 2018 through June 2021. Sixty screws were then inserted into canine cadaver femurs, and biomechanical properties were measured, including peak insertional torque, torque to failure, and pullout strength, each normalized to cortical thickness. Scanning electron micrographs were taken from 24 screws, and images were blindly analyzed by 5 trained examiners. RESULTS: The mean normalized insertion torque for 3.5-mm screws was significantly different between G1 and both G50 and G100. The mean normalized torque to failure for 3.5-mm screws was significantly different between G1 and both G50 and G100. Axial pullout testing was found to be significantly different for 2.0-mm screws between G1 and G100. Scanning electron micrographs surface scoring identified a significant difference in 3.5-mm screws at the screw tip. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that biomechanical changes occur with repeated steam sterilizations. Specifically, peak insertional torque and torque to failure are decreased with increased sterilizations for 3.5-mm screws, whereas 2.0-mm screws were altered in pullout testing after 100 sterilizations. It is suspected that numerous sterilizations negatively alter the physical-mechanical properties of certain screw sizes. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The biomechanical properties of the bone-implant interface could negatively be affected by multiple steam sterilizations during clinical setting.

This study assessed the anti-obesity effects of Lactobacillus paracasei subsp. paracasei NTU 101 (NTU 101) both in vitro and in vivo. Initially, the cytotoxicity and lipid accumulation inhibitory effects of NTU 101 on 3T3-L1 cells were evaluated using the MTT assay and oil red O assay, respectively. Subsequently, the anti-obesity effects of NTU 101 were investigated in high-fat diet-induced obese rat. Moreover, western blotting was performed to measure the obesity-related protein expression of PPARα, PPARß, PPARγ, C/EBPα, C/EBPß, ATGL, p-p38 MAPK, p-ERK1/2, p-AMPK and CPT-1 in both 3T3-L1 adipocytes and adipose and liver tissues. Treatment with 16 × 108 CFU/mL NTU 101 reduced lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes by more than 50 %. Oral administration of NTU 101 significantly attenuated body weight gain, as well as adipose tissue weight. NTU 101 administration enhanced fatty acid oxidation increasing expression levels of PPARα, CPT-1, and p-AMPK proteins in liver tissue, while simultaneously inhibited adipogenesis by reducing PPARγ and C/EBPα proteins in adipose tissue. Furthermore, NTU 101 supplementation positively modulated the composition of gut microbiota, notably increasing the abundance of Akkermansiaceae. This present study suggests that NTU 101 exerts anti-obesity effects by regulating gut microbiota, fatty acid oxidation, lipolysis and adipogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Hirsutella sinensis (HS) is a mycelium isolated from the fruiting body of the medicinal mushroom Cordyceps sinensis . This study explored whether HS treatment affects reproductive dysfunction in a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced mouse model and regulates various mechanisms, focusing on oxidative stress, apoptosis, inflammation, and autophagy. METHODS: Twenty-four C57BL/6J (B6) mice were randomly divided into a standard chow diet (NCD)- or HFD-fed group for 24 weeks. During the final 8 weeks, half of the HFD-fed mice were orally administered HS (HFD + HS). Biochemical markers, including glucose, insulin, triglycerides, and total cholesterol, were assessed, and hormones, including testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH), were analyzed. Liver and testicular histology, as well as sperm quality markers such as sperm motility, sperm count, and percentage of sperm with normal morphology, were observed. The activities of the testicular antioxidants superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and the products of lipid peroxidation, such as malondialdehyde (MDA), were measured. The protein expression levels of apoptosis-, autophagy- and inflammation-related markers were measured. RESULTS: The HFD-fed mice had abnormal sex hormone levels, poor sperm quality, and a destroyed testicular structure, with increased oxidative stress and apoptosis in the testis. HS supplementation in HFD-fed mice attenuated testicular apoptosis by suppressing the Bax/Bcl-xl ratio and cleaved caspase 3 protein expression. The HS-treated mice exhibited improved reproductive function, possibly due to reduced oxidative stress and apoptosis, suggesting that HS has a protective effect against HFD-induced testicular damage. CONCLUSION: Male mice supplemented with HS exhibited attenuated poor semen quality and reduced testosterone levels brought about by HFD-induced obesity by reducing oxidative stress.

Renal disease is often identified as a cause of morbidity and mortality in avian patients. However, currently, early antemortem detection of renal disease in avian patients is difficult. Anatomical and physiological differences between mammals and birds mean the use of commonly employed diagnostic testing (ie, measurement of blood urea nitrogen [BUN] and serum creatinine, urinalysis, and ultrasonography) are either nondiagnostic or difficult to achieve. Symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) is considered a more sensitive marker for renal disease in humans, dogs, and cats. However, SDMA has not yet been assessed for diagnostic use in any psittacine species. In this study, we establish reference ranges for SDMA in both Hispaniolan Amazon parrots (Amazona ventralis, HAP) and Quaker parrots (Myiopsitta monachus, QP). Blood was collected from 23 Amazon parrots and 32 Quaker parrots maintained in research facilities. Measurement of SDMA through a commercially available immunoassay (IA-SDMA) as well as creatinine, BUN, uric acid, phosphorus, calcium, sodium, potassium, and chloride were determined through IDEXX Laboratories. Plasma SDMA concentrations ranged from 6 to 15 µg/dL and 3 to 15 µg/dL for the HAP and QP, respectively. Sex was a confounding factor for the QP population, but sex did not have a significant effect on SDMA for the HAP population. No significant correlations were identified between SDMA concentrations and other parameters in either psittacine species. Our results show proof of concept for the IA-SDMA and provide reference intervals for SDMA in HAP and QP. Further investigation is required to determine the validity of this assay and the predictive power of SDMA in the detection of renal impairment for parrots and other common companion birds.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) represents a challenging malignancy with limited treatment options and a poor prognosis. Adjuvant therapies, including chemotherapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI), are commonly employed following breast conservation surgery. However, these treatments can lead to various adverse effects, including cutaneous complications and connective tissue disorders. Here, we present the case of a 54-year-old woman with TNBC who developed morphea, a form of localized scleroderma, following adjuvant chemotherapy and pembrolizumab administration. This case highlights the rarity of drug-induced morphea and emphasizes the importance of recognizing and managing such adverse events in breast cancer patients. We discuss the clinical characteristics, diagnostic challenges, and treatment considerations associated with drug-induced scleroderma-like lesions, as well as the potential mechanisms underlying their development. Furthermore, we review the literature on the incidence, clinical features, and outcomes of scleroderma-like lesions induced by chemotherapy and ICIs. This case underscores the need for increased awareness of immune-related adverse events in patients receiving immunotherapy, as well as the importance of individualized treatment approaches to optimize patient care and outcomes.

Noninvasive tracking devices are widely used to monitor real-time posture. Yet significant potential exists to enhance postural control quantification through walking videos. This study advances computational science by integrating OpenPose with a Support Vector Machine (SVM) to perform highly accurate and robust postural analysis, marking a substantial improvement over traditional methods which often rely on invasive sensors. Utilizing OpenPose-based deep learning, we generated Dynamic Joint Nodes Plots (DJNP) and iso-block postural identity images for 35 young adults in controlled walking experiments. Through Temporal and Spatial Regression (TSR) models, key features were extracted for SVM classification, enabling the distinction between various walking behaviors. This approach resulted in an overall accuracy of 0.990 and a Kappa index of 0.985. Cutting points for the ratio of top angles (TAR) and the ratio of bottom angles (BAR) effectively differentiated between left and right skews with AUC values of 0.772 and 0.775, respectively. These results demonstrate the efficacy of integrating OpenPose with SVM, providing more precise, real-time analysis without invasive sensors. Future work will focus on expanding this method to a broader demographic, including individuals with gait abnormalities, to validate its effectiveness across diverse clinical conditions. Furthermore, we plan to explore the integration of alternative machine learning models, such as deep neural networks, enhancing the system's robustness and adaptability for complex dynamic environments. This research opens new avenues for clinical applications, particularly in rehabilitation and sports science, promising to revolutionize noninvasive postural analysis.

The tone values of a Tone 4 (T4) syllable are conventionally assumed to change from '51' to '53' when the syllable is followed by another T4 syllable in Mandarin Chinese. Literature focusing on T4 alternation is still inconclusive regarding the contexts for the alternations and whether the phenomenon should be better categorized as tone sandhi (i.e., represented as an abstract phonological rule in mental grammar) or tonal coarticulation (i.e., a natural articulation phenomenon at the phonetic level). The current study probes into these issues by focusing on disyllabic pseudowords, right-branching trisyllabic words as well as unstructured trisyllabic and quadrisyllabic digits. Productions from a total of 148 participants were collected and fundamental frequency (f0) contours, vowel lengths and f0 slopes were included in the analysis. The results from the experiments supported the tonal coarticulation view and showed that the trigger for the alternations was the high-onset tones following T4. Implications to the phonological analysis on tonal alternations in Mandarin Chinese are discussed.

Deep Ocean Water (DOW) is rich in minerals and serves as a natural source of nutrients. However, due to the inorganic nature of these minerals, cultivating yeast in DOW could aid in the fermentation process, and simultaneously, the yeast can assimilate the minerals from DOW, resulting in a mineral-enriched yeast biomass. Focusing on three DOW sources off the eastern coast of Taiwan (TT-1, HL-1, HL-2), we fermented various yeast strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Therefore, this study investigates the effects of DOW on yeast growth, alcohol dehydrogenase activity, and the biological absorption of mineral ions by the yeast. Additionally, this research employs two-dimensional electrophoresis techniques to examine how the absorbed minerals influence the regulation of yeast proteins, thereby affecting biomass and metabolism. In the result, S. cerevisiae BCRC 21689 demonstrated a remarkable ability to bio-absorb minerals such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, and zinc from DOW, enhancing its growth and fermentation performance. Proteomic analysis revealed significant shifts in the expression of 21 proteins related to glycolytic and energy metabolism, alcohol metabolism, and growth regulation, all influenced by DOW's mineral-rich environment. This indicates that DOW's mineral content is a key factor in upregulating essential enzymes in glycolytic metabolism and alcohol dehydrogenase. An increase in proteins involved in synthesis and folding processes was also observed, leading to a substantial increase in yeast biomass. This study underscores the potential of DOW as a natural enhancer in yeast fermentation processes, enriching the yeast with diverse minerals and modulating proteomic expression to optimize yeast growth and fermentation.

Formoterol, a ß2-adrenergic receptor (ß2AR) agonist, shows promise in various diseases, but its effectiveness in Parkinson's disease (PD) is debated, with unclear regulation of mitochondrial homeostasis. This study employed a cell model featuring mitochondrial ubiquinol-cytochrome c reductase core protein 1 (UQCRC1) variants associated with familial parkinsonism, demonstrating mitochondrial dysfunction and dynamic imbalance, exploring the therapeutic effects and underlying mechanisms of formoterol. Results revealed that 24-h formoterol treatment enhanced cell proliferation, viability, and neuroprotection against oxidative stress. Mitochondrial function, encompassing DNA copy number, repatriation, and complex III-linked respiration, was comprehensively restored, along with the dynamic rebalance of fusion/fission events. Formoterol reduced extensive hypertubulation, in contrast to mitophagy, by significantly upregulating protein Drp-1, in contrast to fusion protein Mfn2, mitophagy-related protein Parkin. The upstream mechanism involved the restoration of ERK signaling and the inhibition of Akt overactivity, contingent on the activation of ß2-adrenergic receptors. Formoterol additionally aided in segregating healthy mitochondria for distribution and transport, therefore normalizing mitochondrial arrangement in mutant cells. BACKGROUND: Spiritual care plays a significant role in holistic patient care, addressing not only physical ailments but also attending to patients' emotional and spiritual well-being. While the importance of spiritual care in nursing is widely recognized, there is often a gap in understanding nurses' willingness to provide such care. This cross-sectional study aimed to explore the association between self-efficacy, spiritual well-being, and willingness to provide spiritual care among nursing staff. METHODS: The study conducted a cross-sectional survey of full-time registered nurses at a hospital in Taiwan from January 2019 to December 2019. A sample comprising 168 nurses was selected for participation in the study through a random sampling method. In addition to collecting demographic variables, the assessment tools used in the study include the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) for measuring self-efficacy, the Spiritual Index of Well-Being Chinese Version (SIWB-C) for evaluating spiritual well-being, and the Spiritual Care Needs Inventory (SCNI) to gauge willingness to provide spiritual care. RESULTS: Most participants in the study were female, accounting for 98.2% (n = 165). The mean age of all 168 nurses was 37.1 ± 9.3 years. Additionally, most participants held a Bachelor's degree (79.2%, n = 133) and possessed clinical experience was 10.5 ± 9.3 years. Through logistic regression analysis, it was found that regardless of whether participants have received sufficient spiritual care training, both GSES and SIWB-C remain influential factors in determining the provision of spiritual care. CONCLUSIONS: Collaboration between healthcare management and nursing staff is essential for fostering a healthcare environment that not only appreciates the physical and spiritual dimensions of patient care but also prioritizes the enhancement of nurses ' self-efficacy and well-being.

OBJECTIVE: To report risk factors associated with conjunctival graft failure in dogs at four referral specialty centers. PROCEDURES: Records of 203 dogs (229 eyes) undergoing conjunctival graft repair of ulcerative keratitis at four hospitals from 2015 to 2021 were reviewed. Success was defined as full graft integration with globe retention at the last postoperative evaluation; vision status was reported separately. Factors assessed included patient signalment, ophthalmic examination findings, surgical factors, and follow-up information. RESULTS: Conjunctival graft failure occurred in 11% (25/229) of eyes and was significantly associated with ulcer depth, with corneal perforations having increased odds of graft failure compared with descemetoceles (odds ratio [OR] = 3.22, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.11-9.32; p = .03) and stromal ulcers (OR = 10.89 [95% CI 1.38-86.18], p = .02). Brachycephalic dogs were significantly more likely than non-brachycephalic dogs to experience graft failure (OR = 5.02 [95% CI 1.42-17.74], p < .01). Surgery on the opposite eye relative to surgeon handedness was significantly associated with an increased risk of graft failure (OR 4.28 [95% CI 1.53-11.94], p < .01). The use of 7-0 and 8-0 suture versus 9-0 (p = .03) and the use of a combined simple continuous and interrupted pattern (p = .03) were significantly associated with an increased risk of graft failure. At the last follow-up, (median 61.5 days), 87% of dogs were visual. CONCLUSIONS: Corneal perforations, surgery on the opposite eye relative to surgeon handedness, suture size and pattern, and brachycephalic conformation were significantly associated with an increased risk of graft failure in this study. These characteristics can be considered when determining prognosis for ulcerative keratitis requiring surgical intervention.

Methamphetamine is a highly abused psychostimulant that substantially impacts public health. Prenatal and postnatal methamphetamine exposure alters gene expression, brain development, and behavior in the offspring, although the underlying mechanisms are not fully defined. To assess these adverse outcomes in the offspring, we employed a mouse model of prenatal and postnatal methamphetamine exposure. Juvenile offspring were behaviorally assessed on the open field, novel object recognition, Y-maze, and forced swim tests. In addition, RNA sequencing was used to explore potential alterations in prefrontal cortical gene expression. We found that methamphetamine-exposed mice exhibited decreased locomotor activity and impaired cognitive performance. In addition, differential expression of genes involved in neurotransmission, synaptic plasticity, and neuroinflammation were found with notable changes in dopaminergic signaling pathways. These data suggest potential neural and molecular mechanisms underlying methamphetamine-exposed behavioral changes. The altered expression of genes involved in dopaminergic signaling and synaptic plasticity highlights potential targets for therapeutic interventions for substance abuse disorders and related psychiatric complications.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a recurrent allergic disease characterized by symptoms such as itching, redness, swelling, dryness, scaling skin, inflammation, and tissue damage. The underlying pathogenesis of AD remains unclear. Steroid drugs are commonly used in the clinical treatment of AD; however, their long-term use may lead to associated complications. Numerous studies have indicated that probiotics could modulate the immune system, enhance immune function, or suppress excessive immune responses. In this study, Lactobacillus paracasei subsp. paracasei NTU 101 (NTU 101) was orally administered for a duration of 4 weeks, followed by the induction of AD using ovalbumin (OVA) in a mouse model. The skin condition of the stimulated site was observed during the induction period. Subsequently, the serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) content, splenocyte T cell typing, and skin histological interpretation were examined to evaluate the efficacy of NTU 101 in alleviating AD symptoms in allergen-exposed animals. The findings indicated that administering NTU 101 beforehand effectively alleviated skin symptoms in animals with AD. It reduced the infiltration of inflammatory cells in skin tissue sections, and compared to the OVA group, there was a significant reduction in the thickening of the epidermal cell layer (decreased from 89.0 ± 20.2 µM to 48.6 ± 16.0 µM) and dermis layer (decreased from 310.3 ± 69.0 µM to 209.7 ± 55.5 µM). Moreover, the proportion of regulatory T (Treg) cells and T helper 2 (Th2) cells in splenocytes significantly increased, while the proportions of T helper 1 (Th1) and T helper 17 (Th17) cells did not differ. It is speculated that the potential mechanism by which NTU 101 prevents AD involves increasing the expression of Forkhead box protein P3 (FOXP3) and promoting Treg cell maturation, thereby alleviating allergic reaction symptoms associated with AD.

Introduction: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had an impact on patients with substance use disorder (SUD). We aimed to investigate factors associated with confidence and adherence to governmental policies against COVID-19 (social desirability) among patients with SUD. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted during 2020 to 2021. Patients with SUD and healthy controls were recruited. The severity of sleep disturbance, social desirability, drug dependence, vaccine worries, other psychological burdens and demographic variables were collected through self-administrated questionnaires. Differences between the SUD and control groups were estimated. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to identify significant relationships between social desirability and other factors. Results: In total, 58 of patients with SUD and 47 healthy controls were recruited. The patients with SUD had a lower level of social desirability and more severe sleep disturbance than the control group. Older age, more severe sleep disturbance, lower level of drug dependence, and lower level of vaccine worries were significantly associated with a higher level of social desirability among the patients with SUD. Conclusion: Our results show the importance of timely interventions for drug dependence and to address vaccine worries in patients with SUD.
