BACKGROUND: Near-infrared imaging with indocyanine green has been used to guide lateral lymph node dissection, yet its efficacy and benefits need further investigation. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy and feasibility of near-infrared fluorescence imaging and angiography of the inferior vesical artery in laparoscopic lateral lymph node dissection. DESIGN: A prospective nonrandomized controlled study. SETTINGS: Single-center study. PATIENTS: Patients with lower rectal cancer who underwent total mesorectal excision plus lateral lymph node dissection. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: A cohort of 108 patients was enrolled. After propensity score matching, 29 patients in the near-infrared group and 50 patients in the non-near-infrared group were matched. The total number of harvested lateral lymph nodes, positive lateral lymph nodes, inferior vesical artery preservation, and postoperative urinary function were compared. RESULTS: After propensity score matching, both groups had similar baseline characteristics. The total number of harvested lateral lymph nodes in the near-infrared group was significantly higher (12 vs 9, p = 0.013), but positive lateral lymph nodes were similar between the 2 groups (1 vs 1, p = 0.439). The inferior vesical artery preservation ratio was significantly increased with the aid of indocyanine green angiography (93.1% vs 56.0%, p < 0.001). The non-near-infrared group required more days for urinary catheter removal than the near-infrared group (5 vs 4, p = 0.046). Urinary recatheterization tended to occur more frequently in the non-near-infrared group, with a marginally significant trend (16% vs 0%, p = 0.059). The non-near-infrared group tended to have more cases with residual urine volume ≥50 mL than the near-infrared group (20.0% vs 3.4%, p = 0.087), especially in the bilateral dissection subgroup (41.2% vs 0%, p = 0.041). LIMITATIONS: Small sample size. CONCLUSIONS: Near-infrared imaging increased the number of harvested lateral lymph nodes, whereas real-time indocyanine green fluorescence angiography ensured the preservation of the inferior vesical artery and tended to improve postoperative urinary function.

One of the central issues in pattern formation is understanding the response of pattern-forming systems to an external stimulus. While significant progress has been made in systems with only one instability, much less is known about the response of complex patterns arising from the interaction of two or more instabilities. In this paper, we consider the effects of square spatial periodic forcing on oscillatory hexagon patterns in a two-layer coupled reaction diffusion system which undergoes both Turing and Hopf instabilities. Two different types of additive forcings, namely direct and indirect forcing, have been applied. It is shown that the coupled system exhibits different responses towards the spatial forcing under different forcing types. In the indirect case, the oscillatory hexagon pattern transitions into other oscillatory Turing patterns or resonant Turing patterns, depending on the forcing wavenumber and strength. In the direct forcing case, only non-resonant Turing patterns can be obtained. Our results may provide new insight into the modification and control of spatio-temporal patterns in multilayered systems, especially in biological and ecological systems.

BACKGROUND: During laparoscopic resection for colorectal cancer, there is controversy regarding whether the left colic artery (LCA) should be preserved at its origin. AIM: To investigate the prognostic significance of preservation of the LCA in colorectal cancer surgery. METHODS: Patients were divided into two groups. The high ligation (H-L) technique (refers to ligation performed 1 cm from the beginning of the inferior mesenteric artery) group consisted of 46 patients, and the low ligation (L-L) technique (refers to ligation performed below the initiation of the LCA) group consisted of 148 patients. Operative time, blood loss, lymph nodes with tumor invasion, postoperative complications and recovery time, recurrence rate, and 5-year survival rate were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The average number of lymph nodes detected in postoperative pathological specimens was 17.4/person in the H-L group and 15.9/person in the L-L group. There were 20 patients (43%) with positive lymph nodes (lymph node metastasis) in the H-L group and 60 patients (41%) in the L-L group. No statistical differences were found between the groups. Complications occurred in 12 cases (26%) in the H-L group and in 26 cases (18%) in the L-L group. The incidences of postoperative anastomotic complications and functional urinary complications were significantly lower in the L-L group. The 5-year survival rates in H-L and L-L groups were 81.7% and 81.6%, respectively, and relapse-free survival rates were 74.3% and 77.1%, respectively. The two groups were similar statistically. CONCLUSION: Complete mesenteric resection combined with lymph node dissection around the inferior mesenteric artery root while preserving the LCA is a beneficial surgical approach during laparoscopic resection for colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Kawasaki disease (KD) is a multisystemic angiitis, and its most disastrous complication is coronary artery lesions (CALs). Recently, the role of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in KD has been reported. rs1814343 is a lncRNA, but the relationship between the lncRNA rs1814343 polymorphism and KD risk remains elusive. METHODS: We enrolled 1625 Kawasaki disease patients (583 patients with CAL and 1042 without CAL) and 1000 healthy controls from a southern Chinese population. We genotyped the rs1814343 C > T polymorphism in KD and control patients using the TaqMan method. The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to estimate the strength of the association. RESULTS: There was no significant association between the lncRNA rs1814343 C > T polymorphism and KD susceptibility. However, we stratified patients in this study by CAL and sex. First, compared with the control groups, we found that the rs1814343 genotype increased risk for KD patients with CAL (TT vs. CC + CT: OR = 1.36, 95% CI = 1.08-1.71, p = 0.009). Moreover, when KD patients were stratified by CAL, the TT genotypes of this lncRNA polymorphism contributed to a relatively higher occurrence of KD with CAL than that was found in the CC/CT genotype patients (TT vs. CC + CT: OR = 1.35, 95% CI = 1.07-1.69, p = 0.011). In addition, our research suggested that the TT variant genotype in the lncRNA rs1814343 had an obvious risk of KD with CAL susceptibility in male children. CONCLUSION: The lncRNA rs1814343 C > T polymorphism was related to higher susceptibility of KD with CAL.

Background: Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute, self-limited vasculitis disorder of unknown etiology in children. Immunologic abnormalities were detected during the acute phase of KD, which reflected that the effect cells of the activated immune system markedly increased cytokine production. High-dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy is effective in resolving inflammation from KD and reducing occurrence of coronary artery abnormalities. However, 10%-20% of KD patients have no response to IVIG therapy, who were defined as IVIG resistance. Furthermore, these patients have persistent inflammation and increased risk of developing coronary artery aneurysm (CAA). EIF2AK4 is a stress sensor gene and can be activated by pathogen infection. In addition, the polymorphisms of EIF2AK4 were associated with various blood vessel disorders. However, it remains unclear whether the EIF2AK4 gene polymorphisms were related to IVIG therapy outcome in KD patients. Methods: EIF2AK4/rs4594236 polymorphism was genotyped in 795 IVIG response KD patients and 234 IVIG resistant KD patients through TaqMan, a real-time polymerase chain reaction. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to assess the strength of association between EIF2AK4/rs4594236 polymorphism and IVIG therapeutic effects. Results: Our results showed that the EIF2AK4/rs4594236 AG/GG genotype was significantly associated with increased risk to IVIG resistance compared to the AA genotype (AG vs. AA: adjusted ORs = 1.71, 95% CIs = 1.17-2.51, and p = 0.0061; GG vs. AA: adjusted ORs = 2.09, 95% CIs = 1.36-3.23, and p = 0.0009; AG/GG vs. AA: adjusted ORs = 1.82, 95% CIs = 1.27-2.63, and p = 0.0013; and GG vs. AA/AG: adjusted ORs = 1.45, 95% CI = 1.04-2.02, and p = 0.0306). Furthermore, the stratified analysis of age and gender in the KD cohort indicated that male patients carrying the rs4594236 AG/GG genotype tends to be more resistant to IVIG therapy than female patients. Conclusion: These results suggested that EIF2AK4/rs4594236 polymorphism might be associated with increased risk of IVIG resistance in southern Chinese KD patients.

The rate-integrating gyroscope (RIG) operation is considered as the next generation architecture for hemispherical resonator gyroscopes (HRGs) with advantages of direct angle measurement and unlimited dynamic range. However, this RIG operation requires high symmetry for the HRG device and the damping mismatch of the two gyroscopic modes will result in a dead area problem. This work analyzes the error mechanism of the damping asymmetry induced dead area and proposed a novel virtual procession compensation method for HRG RIG. The simulation proves the existence of the dead area as the theory predicted. More importantly, the experimental HRG RIG platform with the proposed compensation method can significantly expand the dynamic range with accurate angle measurement and overcome the problem of dead area. The earth rotation is accurate measured which is the first time that captured by a RIG scheme as a state-of-the-art result.

In this study, for energy compensation in the whole-angle control of Hemispherical Resonator Gyro (HRG), the dynamical equation of the resonator, which is excited by parametric excitation of the discrete electrode, is established, the stability conditions are analyzed, and the method of the double-frequency parametric excitation by the discrete electrode is derived. To obtain the optimal parametric excitation of the resonator, the total energy stability of the resonator is simulated for the evolution of the resonator vibration with different excitation parameters and the free precession of the standing wave by the parametric excitation. In addition, the whole-angle control of the HRG is designed, and the energy compensation of parametric excitation is proven by the experiments. The results of the experiments show that the energy compensation of the HRG in the whole-angle control can be realized using discrete electrodes with double-frequency parametric excitation, which significantly improves the dynamic performance of the whole-angle control compared to the force-to-rebalance.

AIMS: To explore the intestinal microbiota composition affected by the two most widely used procedures of bariatric surgery, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and laparoscopic roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB), in Chinese obesity patients. METHODS: Stool samples were collected from the obese patients before (n = 87) and with follow-up after the surgery (n = 53). After DNA extraction, 16S rDNA (V3 + V4 regions) sequencing was completed on Illumina HiSeq 2500 sequencing platform. The samples were analyzed base on four groups, pre-LSG (n = 54), pre-LRYGB (n = 33), post-LSG (n = 33), and post-LRYGB (n = 20). The linear mixed models were used to analyze the alteration of intestinal microbiota before and after the surgeries of LSG or LRYGB. Student's t test and χ2 test were used for analysis of independent groups; Metastats analysis was used to compare the relative abundance of bacteria, and Pearson correlation and Spearman correlation analysis were used to test the correlation between indicated groups. RESULTS: 87 patients were included and 53 (60.92%) of them completed the follow-up (9.60 ± 3.92 months). Body mass index (BMI) decreased from 37.84 ± 6.16 kg/m2 to 26.22 ± 4.33 kg/m2 after LSG and from 45.75 ± 14.26 kg/m2 to 33.15 ± 10.99 kg/m2 after LRYGB. The relative abundance of 5 phyla and 42 genera were altered after the surgery in the cohort. Although no alteration of Firmicutes was observed at phylum level, 54.76% of the altered genera belong to phylum Firmicutes. Both LSG and LRYGB procedures increased the richness and evenness of intestinal microbiota in obese patients after the surgery. Particularly, 33 genera altered after LSG and 19 genera altered after LRYGB, in which 11 genera were common alterations in both procedures. CONCLUSION: Both LSG and LRYGB altered the composition of intestinal microbiota in Chinese obesity patients, and particularly increased the richness and evenness of microbiota. Genera belonging to phylum Firmicutes were the most altered bacteria by bariatric surgery. The procedure of LSG resulted in much more pronounced alteration of the intestinal microbiota abundance than that observed in LRYGB. While different genera were altered after LSG and LRYGB procedures, 10 genera were the common altered genera in both procedures. Bacteria altered after LSG and LRYGB were functionally associated with BMI, and with relieving of the metabolic syndromes.

The naturally persistent flow of hundreds of dust particles is experimentally achieved in a dusty plasma system with the asymmetric sawteeth of gears on the electrode. It is also demonstrated that the direction of the dust particle flow can be controlled by changing the plasma conditions of the gas pressure or the plasma power. Numerical simulations of dust particles with the ion drag inside the asymmetric sawteeth verify the experimental observations of the flow rectification of dust particles. Both experiments and simulations suggest that the asymmetric potential and the collective effect are the two keys in this dusty plasma ratchet. With the nonequilibrium ion drag, the dust flow along the asymmetric orientation of this electric potential of the ratchet can be reversed by changing the balance height of dust particles using different plasma conditions.

Inhibition of tumor cell migration is a treatment strategy for patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). SCF-dependent activation of c-KIT is responsible for migration of c-KIT positive [c-KIT(+)] cells of CRC. Drug resistance to Imatinib Mesylate (c-KIT inhibitor) has emerged. Inhibition of mTOR can induce autophagic degradation of c-KIT. (+)-usnic acid [(+)-UA], isolated from lichens, has two major functions including induction of proton shuttle and targeting inhibition of mTOR. To reduce hepatotoxicity, the treatment concentration of (+)-UA should be lower than 10 µM. HCT116 cells and LS174 cells were employed to investigate the inhibiting effect of (+)-UA (<10 µM) on SCF-mediated migration of c-KIT(+) CRC cells. HCT116 cells were employed to investigate the molecular mechanisms. The results indicated that firstly, 8 µM (+)-UA decreased ATP content via uncoupling; secondly, 8 µM (+)-UA induced mTOR inhibition, thereby mediated activation suppression of PKC-A, and induced the autophagy of the completed autophagic flux that resulted in the autophagic degradation and transcriptional inhibition of c-KIT and the increase in LDH release; ultimately, 8 µM (+)-UA inhibited SCF-mediated migration of CRC c-KIT(+) cells. Taken together, 8 µM could be determined as the effective concentration for (+)-UA to inhibit SCF-mediated migration of CRC c-KIT(+) cells.

A novel type of white-eye pattern in a dielectric barrier discharge system has been investigated in this paper. It is a superposition of a hexagonal lattice and a white-eye stripe in appearance and evolves from a white-eye square grid state with the applied voltage increasing. Its spatio-temporal dynamics obtained by an intensified charge-coupled device shows that it consists of three transient rectangular sublattices. The spatiotemporally resolved evolutions of the molecular vibrational temperature and electron density of the pattern are measured by optical emission spectra. The evolution of surface charge distribution is given and its effect on the self-organized pattern formation is discussed.

Pattern formation and self-organization are fascinating phenomena found widely in nature and in laboratory environment such as dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). Significant efforts have been made to explain the dynamic pattern formation. In DBD, the formation of side discharges is generally supposed to be a key factor responsible for diversity and spatial-temporal symmetry breaking of pattern formation. However, it is still not clear how such discharges are induced. Here, we present the observations of side discharges in a filamentary dielectric barrier discharge from both numerical simulations and experiments. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations with Monte Carlo collisions included have revealed formation dynamics of side discharges, suggesting that transverse plasma diffusion and ion induced secondary electron emission play critical roles. Moreover, a novel honeycomb superlattice pattern is observed in experiment, where the side discharges associated with honeycomb superlattice are verified by utilizing a high speed camera. Experimental observations and numerical simulation are in good agreement.

BACKGROUND: This study prospectively assessed the left ventricular (LV) diastolic function changes in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and determined if the early revascularization of the infarct-related coronary artery in acute phase achieve a better recovery of diastolic function than late recanalization. METHODS: Forty-five consecutive patients (61.20±11.37years, 8 females) presenting with STEMI and treated with PCI were prospectively enrolled in this study. The important inclusion criteria were first acute coronary syndrome episode and LV ejection fraction exceeded 45%. The patients were divided to two different groups by total ischemia time (TIT): early reperfusion (TIT<6h) and late reperfusion group (TIT≥6h). Transthoracic echocardiography were performed within the first week after PCI, and data were compared between groups. Evaluation of diastolic function was based on integrated assessment of trans-mitral Doppler flow pattern, tissue Doppler, and color M-mode ECT. RESULTS: A normal diastolic filling pattern was seen in only 9 patients, and the other 80% patients had abnormal filling patterns: 16 impaired relaxation, 14 pseudonormal, and 6 restrictive filling patterns. The e'septal velocity was lower in early reperfusion group compared to late reperfusion group (5.52±1.67cm/s vs 7.11±2.14cm/s, P<0.05), but no statistical difference was found in E/e' average (11.99±4.30 vs 9.85±3.47, P>0.05). There was also no statistical difference for left atrial volume index and mitral annulus propagation velocity between groups. CONCLUSIONS: LV diastolic dysfunction was present in most of acute MI patients even after successful PCI. It seemed STEMI patients receiving early myocardial reperfusion had no better diastolic functions compared with late-reperfused patients within the acute phase.

Soil samples from 16 urban sites in Lianyungang, China were collected and analyzed. A pollution index was used to assess the potential ecological risk of heavy metals and a sequential extraction procedure was used to evaluate the relative distribution of Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cr, and As in exchangeable, carbonate, Fe/Mn oxide, organic/sulfide, and residual fractions. The mobility of heavy metals and urease (URE) activity, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and invertase (INV) activity of soils was determined. The results showed that the average concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cr, and As in Lianyungang soils were much higher than those in the coastal city soil background values of Jiangsu and China. Among the five studied regions (utilities, commercial, industrial, tourism, and roadside), the industrial region had the highest metal concentrations demonstrating that land use had a significant impact on the accumulation of heavy metals in Lianyungang soils. Compared to the other metals, Cd showed the highest ecological risk. According to chemical partitioning, Cu was associated with the organic/sulfides and Pb and Zn were mainly in the carbonate and the Fe/Mn oxide phase. The greatest amounts of Cd were found in exchangeable and carbonate fractions, while Cr and As were mainly in the residual fraction. Cd had the highest mobility of all metals, and the order of mobility (highest to lowest) of heavy metals in Lianyungang soils was Cd > Zn > Pb > Cu > As > Cr. Soil urease activity, alkaline phosphatase activity, and invertase activity varied considerably in different pollution degree sites. Soil enzyme activities had the lowest levels in roadside and industrial regions. Across all the soil data in the five regions, the total Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cr, and As level was negatively correlated with urease activity, alkaline phosphatase activity, and invertase activity, but the relationship was not significant. In the industrial region, alkaline phosphatase activity had significant negative correlations with total Cu, Pb, Cr, Zn, Cd, and heavy metal fractions. This showed that alkaline phosphatase activity was sensitive to heavy metals in heavily contaminated regions, whereas urease and invertase were less affected. The combination of the various methods may offer a powerful analytical technique in the study of heavy metal pollution in street soil.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the difference of plasma lactate level between dipping and non-dipping hypertension, and to investigate the effects of lactate on subclinical cardiovascular damages in dipping and non-dipping hypertension. METHODS: According to 24 h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, 236 patients with dipping and 152 with non-dipping hypertension were included. Clinical characteristics were collected and compared between dipping and non-dipping groups. Left ventricle hypertrophy (LVH) and N-terminal pro-B type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) level were used to evaluate subclinical cardiovascular damage. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to evaluate the relationship between lactate and LVH and NT-proBNP elevation. RESULTS: Compared to dipping hypertension, plasma levels of lactate and NT-proBNP in non-dipping hypertension group were significantly higher. Moreover, the value of left ventricle mass index to height (LVMI/height) was also significantly higher in non-dipping group, and the percentage of patient with LVH was also higher in non-dipping group (36.8% vs. 28.9%, P < 0.05). Multivariate regression analysis revealed that in non-dipping group, after fully adjustment, the associations between lactate with LVH and NT-proBNP remained significant, with odds ratio (OR) of 1.18 (95% confidence interval [CI] of 1.13-1.24) in LVH and OR of 1.16 in NT-proBNP (95% CI of 1.10-1.23), respectively. Nonetheless, the associations between lactate with LVH and NT-proBNP elevation in dipping group were diminished to statistical nonsignificance. CONCLUSION: Plasma lactate level in non-dipping hypertension is significantly higher than dipping hypertension, and this difference may be the potential mechanism non-dipping hypertension contributes to greater targeted organ damage.

BACKGROUND: In the early stage of diabetes, the cardiac ejection fraction is preserved, despite the existence of the subclinical cardiac dysfunction to some extent. However, the detailed phenotype of this dysfunction and the underlying mechanism remain unclear. To improve our understanding of this issue, we used low-dose STZ and high-fat diet to induce type 2 diabetic models in rats. The effects and the mechanism associated with the early stages of the disease were analyzed. METHODS: The type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM) in SD rats were induced through 30 mg/kg STZ and high-fat diet. Two-dimensional spackle-tracking echocardiography (STE) and the dobutamine test were performed to examine the cardiac function. Calcium transients of left ventricular myocytes were detected and the related intracellular signalling factors were analyzed by western blotting. RESULTS: After 6-weeks, T2DM rats in left ventricular (LV) diastole showed decreased global and segment strain(S) levels (P < 0.05), both in the radial and circumferential directions. Strain rate (Sr) abatement occurred in three segments in the radial and circumferential directions (P < 0.05), and the radial global Sr also decreased (P < 0.05). In the systolic LV, radial Sr was reduced, except the segment of the anterior septum, and the Sr of the lateral wall and post septum decreased in the circumferential direction (P < 0.05). Conventional M-mode echocardiography failed to detect significant alterations of cardiac performance between the two groups even after 12 weeks, and the decreased ejection fraction (EF%), fractional shortening (FS%) and end-systolic diameters (ESD) could be detected only under stress conditions induced by dobutamine (P < 0.05). In terms of calcium transients in cardiac myocytes, the Tpeak in model rats at 6 weeks was not affected, while the Tdecay1/2 was higher than that of the controls (P < 0.05), and both showed a dose-dependent delay after isoproterenol treatment (P < 0.05). Western blot analysis showed that in 6-week T2DM rats, myocardial p-PLB expression was elevated, whereas p-CaMKII, p-AMPK and Sirt1 were significantly down-regulated (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: A rat model of T2DM was established by low dose STZ and a high-fat diet. LV deformation was observed in the early stages of T2DM in association with the delay of Ca(2+) transients in cardiomyocytes due to the decreased phosphorylation of CaMKII. Myocardial metabolism remodeling might contribute to the early LV function and calcium transportation abnormalities.

Surface sediments were collected at 31 sites covering five functional zones of Haizhou Bay, Lianyungang, Jiangsu, China. Heavy metal concentrations and enzymatic activity of phosphatase and urease were determined on a dry-weight basis of sediments. Metal concentrations in sediments were comparable to the Chinese National Standard of Marine Sediment Quality and were as follows: Cu, 8.60-55.8 mg kg(-1); Zn, 107-384 mg kg(-1); Pb, 33.6-200 mg kg(-1); Cd, 0.24-2.57 mg kg(-1); Cr, 30.3-92.1 mg kg(-1); As, 12.9-110 mg kg(-1); Ni, 15.8-49.6 mg kg(-1); Mn, 379-1272 mg kg(-1); and Fe, 13,790-38,240 mg kg(-1). A geoaccumulation index (I geo) was calculated to help researchers understand the status of pollutants in the sediments. I geo showed that Cd and As contamination existed in the study area. The mobility of the metals and the relationship between heavy metal concentrations of chemical fractions and enzymatic activities were also investigated. Results showed that Cd and Mn had higher mobility than other metals, and enzymatic activities may play an important role in controlling the bioavailability and transformation trend of heavy metals from one fraction to another in sediments.

Coastal zone could be considered as an important sink of regional source to sink and preserve historical records of environmental evolution. Four sediment cores, collected from tidal flat at Haizhou Bay near Lianyungang City, were examined for concentrations of heavy metals including Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn in core sediments to investigate the historical input of trace metals. In addition, sediment rates of cores LH3 and LH4 were determined based on radionuclide 210Pb. The results showed that grain size control effect was not the main factor that influenced the distribution of heavy metals. Heavy metals concentrations in the surface sediments were higher than these regional background values. Furthermore, Al element as a proxy of grain size was selected for normalization and calculation of metal enrichment factor (EF) and anthropogenic heavy metal fluxes. The results revealed that heavy metals in tidal flats were continuously enriched in the past decades, meanwhile, tidal flats have been significantly subjected to contaminations due to anthropogenic activities. Moreover, the depth profiles of heavy metals fluxes correspond to scenario of social-economy development of Lianyungang, which is an important urban area near Haizhou Bay. From 1950s to 2005, anthropogenic fluxes of metals increased with fluctuations, whereas, since 2005 anthropogenic fluxes declined, which may be correlated to the adjustment of industrial structure as well as the strengthened environmental regulation.

We study the interaction of both dense and sparse multiarmed spirals in bistable media modeled by equations of the FitzHugh-Nagumo type. A dense one-armed spiral is characterized by its fixed tip. For dense multiarmed spirals, when the initial distance between tips is less than a critical value, the arms collide, connect, and disconnect continuously as the spirals rotate. The continuous reconstruction between the front and the back drives the tips to corotate along a rough circle and to meander zigzaggedly. The rotation frequency of tip, the frequency of zigzagged displacement, the frequency of spiral, the oscillation frequency of media, and the number of arms satisfy certain relations as long as the control parameters of the model are fixed. When the initial distance between tips is larger than the critical value, the behaviors of individual arms within either dense or sparse multiarmed spirals are identical to that of corresponding one-armed spirals.

Total phosphorus (TP), inorganic-phosphorus(IP), organic-phosphorus (OP), Fe/Al-bound phosphorus (NaOH-P) and Ca-bound phosphorus (HCl-P) in surface sediments of Chaohu Lake were measured, using the standard measurement and test (SMT) procedure of phosphorus forms in freshwater sediments. ArcGIS 9.2 and goestatistics software GS + 5. 3 were applied to process the spatial data and interpolation. Results showed that no significant seasonal variation of TN, TP and organic matter contents in sediments were presented, and the western lake had higher contents of TN, TP and organic matter than those in eastern lake; the C/N ratios varied from 21.35 to 28.19, with average value of 24.94, which demonstrated the dominance of non-point source pollution. The TP contents in surface sediments ranged from 528.90 to 1 385.71 mg x kg(-1), and the main form of TP in sediments was IP(accounted for 55.78% -79.86% of TP). The OP in sediments ranged from 169.05 mg x kg(-1) to 841.24 mg x kg(-1), with eastern lake and western lake were 376.02 mg x kg(-1) and 406.53 mg x kg(-1), respectively (accounted for 47.49% and 36.28% of TP); the NaOH-P contents in sediments ranged from 33.77 mg x kg(-1) to 411.37 mg x kg(-1), with eastern lake and western lake of 376.02 mg x kg(-1) and 406.53 mg x kg(-1), respectively (accounted for 21.73% and 33.12% of the IP); the HCl-P contents ranged from 194.95 mg x kg(-1) to 477.45 mg x kg(-1), with eastern lake and western lake 321.71 mg x kg(-1). and 338.08 mg x kg(-1), respectively (accounted for 64.50% and 40.53% of the IP), which was the main species of IP. The OP contents was high in spring and winter compared with summer and autumn, while the contents of HCl-P and NaOH-P in summer and autumn were higher than those in spring and winter.
