RESUMEN

Many chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) remote sensing estimation algorithms have been developed for inland water, and they are proposed always based on some ideal assumptions, which are difficult to meet in complex inland waters. Based on MIE scattering theory, this study calculated the optical properties of mineral particles under different size distribution and refractive index conditions, and the Hydrolight software was employed to simulate remote sensing reflectance in the presence of different mineral particles. The findings indicated that the reflectance is significantly influenced by the slope (j) of particle size distribution function and the imaginary part (n') of the refractive index, with the real part (n) having a comparatively minor impact. Through both a simulated dataset containing 18,000 entries and an in situ measured dataset encompassing 2183 data from hundreds of lakes worldwide, the sensitivities of band ratio (BR), fluorescence baseline height (FLH), and three-band algorithms (TBA) to mineral particles were explored. It can be found that BR showed the best tolerance to mineral particles, followed by TBA. However, when the ISM concentration is less than 30 g m-3, the influence of CDOM cannot be ignored. Additionally, a dataset of over 400 entries is necessary for developing the BR algorithm to mitigate the incidental errors arising from differences in data magnitude. And if the amount of developing datasets is less than 400 but greater than 200, the TBA algorithm is more likely to obtain more stable accuracy.

RESUMEN

Elevated nitrate (NO3-) loadings in groundwater may cause health effects in drinking water and nutrient enrichment of aquatic ecosystems. To reveal the sources and seasonal variations of NO3- in the coastal groundwater of Beihai, southern China, we carried out hydrochemical and isotopic (δ15N-δ18O in NO3-) investigations in the summer and winter, respectively, concerning multiple-aquifer groundwater, rainwater, seawater, and surface water. The sources of the main elements present in the waters were interpreted by ionic ratios. NO3- sources were identified by combined use of the δ15N values and δ18O values or NO3-/Na+ molar ratios, with estimations of the proportional contribution by the Bayesian stable isotope mixing model. Denitrification was interpreted along the flow paths. The results show groundwater main elements are originated primarily from silicate weathering, and secondarily from anthropogenic inputs and carbonate dissolution. Its qualities are largely affected by seawater intrusion along the coastline. Because of difference in the predominant minerals within the aquifers and in scale and extent of seawater intrusion, the groundwater displays distinct ionic ratio characters. NO3- concentrations are up to 33.9 mg/L, with higher loadings in the plains relative to along the coastline. Soil N, domestic sewage, rainwater, chemical fertilizers, and algae are NO3- sources, with average proportional contributions of 0.255, 0.221, 0.207, 0.202, and 0.116, respectively. In relation to the winter, higher production of NO3- from nitrification of soil N- and algae-derived ammonium induced by higher temperatures in the summer accounts for increases in groundwater NO3- loadings. In the rural areas, elevated loadings of NO3- in the winter may be due to larger infiltration fractions of sewage. Seasonal variations of atmospheric NO3- deposition and farming may also cause the dynamics. Our results improve the understanding of sources and seasonal dynamics of NO3- in coastal groundwater.

RESUMEN

Beihai City is a typical coastal city where groundwater provides a strong support for social and economic development. Studies on the hydrochemical characteristics and formation mechanism in Beihai City play an important role in the scientific management of water resources and coastal ecological environment protection. In this study, we revealed the main hydrogeochemical processes controlling groundwater quality by means of groundwater survey and water sample collection in the western region of Hepu Basin, Beihai City, combined with hydrochemistry and isotope theories and methods. The results showed that groundwater had the remarkable features of low pH value and low mineralization degree. For pore water, hydrochemistry type by primarily NO3 type water and concentrations of Na+ and Cl- were modestly increased along the flow path. Ca-HCO3, Ca-Cl·HCO3, Ca·Na-HCO3, and Na-Cl·HCO3 types were predominant in fissure water. The groundwater was of meteoric origin, hydrogeochemical evolutions were mainly affected by water-rock interactions, cation exchange, and anthropogenic activities. Na+, K+, and Cl- were mainly derived from evaporite and silicate rocks; Ca2+, Mg2+, HCO3-, and SO42- were from carbonatite and evaporite; and NO3- principally arose from anthropogenic activities. This study suggests that the groundwater pollution prevention and control should be carried out as soon as possible in the area where the NO3 type water occurs to avoid the further deterioration of water quality.

RESUMEN

Water clarity is a critical parameter of water, it is typically measured using the setter disc depth (SDD). The accurate estimation of SDD for optically varying waters using remote sensing remains challenging. In this study, a water classification algorithm based on the Landsat 5 TM/Landsat 8 OLI satellite was used to distinguish different water types, in which the waters were divided into two types by using the ad(443)/ap(443) ratio. Water type 1 refers to waters dominated by phytoplankton, while water type 2 refers to waters dominated by non-algal particles. For the different water types, a specific algorithm was developed based on 994 in situ water samples collected from Chinese inland lakes during 42 cruises. First, the Rrs(443)/Rrs(655) ratio was used for water type 1 SDD estimation, and the band combination of (Rrs(443)/Rrs(655) - Rrs(443)/Rrs(560)) was proposed for water type 2. The accuracy assessment based on an independent validation dataset proved that the proposed algorithm performed well, with an R2 of 0.85, mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 25.98%, and root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.23 m. To demonstrate the applicability of the algorithm, it was extensively evaluated using data collected from Lake Erie and Lake Huron, and the estimation accuracy remained satisfactory (R2 = 0.87, MAPE = 28.04%, RMSE = 0.76 m). Furthermore, compared with existing empirical and semi-analytical SDD estimation algorithms, the algorithm proposed in this paper showed the best performance, and could be applied to other satellite sensors with similar band settings. Finally, this algorithm was successfully applied to map SDD levels of 107 lakes and reservoirs located in the Middle-Lower Yangtze Plain (MLYP) from 1984 to 2020 at a 30 m spatial resolution, and it was found that 53.27% of the lakes and reservoirs in the MLYP generally show an upward trend in SDD. This research provides a new technological approach for water environment monitoring in regional and even global lakes, and offers a scientific reference for water environment management of lakes in the MLYP.

RESUMEN

Particulate organic matter (POM) plays a major role in freshwater ecosystems by serving as a bridge for the conversion of various nutrients. The composition and sources of POM in inland lakes are complex, making it difficult to estimate its concentration accurately via remote sensing. Therefore, a classification-based method based on the sources and composition of POM is proposed for estimating POM concentrations in inland lakes. In this study, 379 samples were collected from ten lakes in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) at different times. A water-type classification method based on OLCI [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] was developed for POM estimation based on biological and optical characteristics. Water type 1 is relatively clear, and POM may originate from aquatic vegetation or sediment. Water type 2 was dominated by inorganic suspended matter, and POM mainly originated from the attachment and entrainment of inorganic minerals. Water type 3 is an algae-dominated water body, and POM is mainly derived from fresh algal particles and the microbial degradation of phytoplankton. Therefore, specific POM estimation algorithms were developed for each water type. OLCI [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] were used for water type 1; [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] were adopted for water type 2; and [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] were selected for water type 3. Using an independent dataset to evaluate the estimation accuracy of the developed algorithm, the results show that the estimation performance of this algorithm is significantly improved compared to the two other algorithms used; the mean absolute percentage errors (MAPE) decreased from 72.56% and 52.21% to 32.61%, and the root mean square errors (RMSE) decreased from 3.05 mg/L and 2.24 mg/L to 1.75 mg/L. A random error analysis of the atmospheric correction demonstrated that this algorithm is robust and can still perform well within a random error of 30%. Finally, this method was successfully applied to map the POM concentrations in the YRD using OLCI images acquired on November 12, 2020.

RESUMEN

Particulate composition provides important information for understanding the changes in underwater light fields and primary productivity. In this study, a semianalytical algorithm, based on Rayleigh-corrected reflectance at 678 nm and 748 nm on Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images was used to estimate the ratio of chlorophyll a to total suspended solids (Chla/TSS), which characterizes the particulate composition of the Great Lakes. The long-term spatial and temporal characteristics of Chla/TSS in the Great Lakes from 2000 to 2020 were obtained. The results demonstrated that Lake Superior had the highest average Chla/TSS values (5.79±0.76 µg/mg), while Lake Erie had the lowest average Chla/TSS values (2.93±0.76 µg/mg). The Mann-Kendall test showed that the Chla/TSS of the Great Lakes all showed an increasing trend, notably in Lake Michigan, with 88.23% pixels showing significant increasing trend. Climatic and hydrological factors dominated the intra-annual variation of Chla/TSS, with contribution rates ranging from 71.47% to 92.54%. Through the annual Chla/TSS change pattern analysis, it was found that the contribution of wind speed to the annual variation in Chla/TSS was slight. Changes in temperature played a major role in the interannual variability of Chla/TSS in Lake Superior and Ontario; runoff and settlement were the major contributors in Lake Huron and Michigan, while cropland dominated the Chla/TSS interannual variability in Lake Erie. Furthermore, the significantly low values of Chla/TSS in spring had the potential to predict the occurrence of blooms in western Lake Erie, and the spatial distribution of Chla/TSS could help predict the location of blooms in the next few days.

RESUMEN

Serious cyanobacterial blooms (CBs) caused by lake eutrophication have become a global ecological and environmental problem and have adversely affected the production, life, and health of human beings. Lake Chaohu and Lake Taihu are two large closed shallow eutrophication lakes in the Yangtze River Delta in China with frequent CBs. In this study, the floating algae index (FAI) algorithm was applied to detect a long-time CBs sequence using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images from 2000 to 2019. The common characteristics and differences of the CBs patterns were further explored in both lakes over the last 20 years. The results showed that the severity of CBs in Lakes Chaohu and Taihu presented a similar trend of decreasing and then increasing during the period of 2000-2004 and 2005-2007, respectively. Although the severity of CBs in the two lakes was alleviated after 2008, CBs in Lake Taihu has gradually increased since 2011 and severe CBs broke out again in 2017 and 2019. Meanwhile, the CBs in Lake Chaohu have varied significantly in different years, and severe CBs were observed in 2012, 2014-2015, and 2018-2019, while in other years, CBs remained relatively low level. The high-frequency regions of CBs were mainly concentrated in the western part in Lake Chaohu and in Zhushan Bay and Meilian Bay in Lake Taihu in the initial years of 2000. However, since 2005, the CBs in Lake Chaohu gradually expanded to the central and eastern parts, and to the northwestern and western shore in Lake Taihu. Furthermore, the relationship between the monthly mean area of CBs (CBsmean) and environmental factors based on principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that temperature was the most important driving factor affecting CBs patterns. Compared to the period from 2001 to 2007, TP played a more important role in both lakes from 2008 to 2019. Various management measures have been adopted to reduce CBs in both lakes and these methods can effectively remove cyanobacteria in a short time, but they do not change CBs patterns in the long period.

RESUMEN

Urban water is a significant part of the urban ecosystem. Therefore, a comprehensive evaluation method of the water environment was proposed based on domestic high-resolution images. The relationships between the spectral characteristics and water quality parameters of urban water were analyzed based on sampling in Nanjing, Wuxi, Changzhou, and Yangzhou from 2017 to 2019. An index named the U-FUI (urban Forel-Ule index) suitable for urban water based on GF-2 images was proposed to achieve the classification of urban water on the basis of the international standard chroma conversion model and the Forel-Ule index. Independent verification data showed that the recognition accuracy of the classification model could reach 72%. The results indicated that urban water can be classified into six classes from Ⅰ to Ⅵ, which represent water colors of blue, light green, dark green, yellow, yellowish brown, and dark grey, respectively, according to the U-FUI. Among them, the water quality of U-FUI Ⅰ water is good, but is rarely distributed in urban water. The concentrations of chlorophyll-a in U-FUI Ⅱ-Ⅲ water are higher than those of the other classes; the concentrations of total suspended solids, particularly inorganic suspended solids, of U-FUI Ⅳ-Ⅴ water are higher than those of the other classes; and the water quality of U-FUI Ⅵ water is poor and the water quality parameters are different from those of the other classes. Meanwhile, the method was successfully applied to the GF-2 image of Nanjing on April 9, 2018. The results showed that the urban water in Nanjing is mainly composed of U-FUI Ⅱ-Ⅳ water, whereas the distribution of U-FUI Ⅰ, Ⅴ, and Ⅵ water is lower in the city. The spatial distribution characteristics were consistent with the results of in-situ sampling in the same period.

RESUMEN

Urban black-odor water (BOW) is a typical phenomenon seen in the urban water environment; it is caused by excessive pollution by organic matter and other pollutants, such as nitrogen and phosphorous. Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) is a major optical fraction of dissolved organic matter. In this study, optical properties and components of CDOM were obtained from 178 river samples collected from five cities in China, the sample were investigated using absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The collected included 89 ordinary water (OW) samples, 63 mild BOW (MBOW), and 26 heavy BOW (HBOW) samples. Significant differences were found in the absorption spectra of the HBOW, MBOW, and OW samples, particularly in their optical parameters (the slope of the spectrum (S275-295), and the ratio of two absorption coefficients of CDOM (E2:E3)). Additionally, the fluorescence intensity of the humic acid-like component (F5) and soluble microbial by product-like component (F4) obtained via the fluorescence regional integration (FRI) method were 3 and 4.2 times higher in HBOW than in OW, respectively; this could be used as an indicator to distinguish OW from BOW in urban rivers. The results obtained using the redundancy method and the strong negative correlation between F4 and dissolved oxygen (DO) (r = - 0.56) suggested that the composition of CDOM could change significantly under different urban water environments (p < 0.01). Different correlations were also found between F5, and a355, E2:E3, S275-295 in different BOW levels, suggesting that the optical parameters of CDOM were mainly determined by the polluted organic matter originating from terrestrial sources with large molecular humic acid-like compounds; optical parameter a355 could distinguish BOW from OW. These findings are conducive in understanding the dynamics of organic matter pollution and to discover the composition and optical properties of the CDOM in urban BOW and OW, thereby providing an effective method for tracking the spatial characteristics of BOW in urban rivers using remote sensing technologies in areas with multiple sources of pollution.

RESUMEN

Groundwater is an important source of water supply in the Leizhou Peninsula. In August 2018, five surface water samples, 18 shallow pore water samples, 14 middle-deep pore water samples, and 27 pore fissure water samples were collected in the Lingbei area, the northern part of the Leizhou Peninsula. Major ion concentrations, as well as H, O isotope composition (of δ18O and δ2H) were analyzed. The results show that groundwater pH values, total hardness, concentrations of K+, TDS, Cl-, and SO42- are low, while H2SiO3(aq) and NO3- concentrations are relatively high. For pores and fissures water, hydrochemical types are mainly Mg-Ca-HCO3, Mg-Ca-HCO3-Cl, and Cl- loadings are significantly increased along the flow path. Ca-Cl, Na-Ca-HCO3-Cl, and Na-Ca-Mg-HCO3-Cl types predominate in shallow pore water. For middle-deep pore water, the types are primarily Mg-Ca-HCO3, Na-Ca-Mg-HCO3, K-Na-HCO3-SO4, and concentrations of K+, Na+, Cl-, and SO42- are modestly increased along the flow path. We find that the groundwater is of meteoric origin, groundwater Cl- and Na+ originate from marine atmospheric precipitation, Mg+, Ca2+, and HCO3- are mainly derived from silicate weathering, and NO3- principally arises from chemical fertilizer. Shallow pore water and fissure pore water are affected by evaporation concentration, whereas cation exchange is important for middle-deep pore water. The milligram equivalent ratio of nitrate in groundwater reaches 28.3%. After taking into account the nitrate, 50.85% of the sampling water is NO3 type, and displays a pollution trend. Our results contribute to the sustainable utilization of groundwater in the study area and other similar areas.

RESUMEN

An analytical model for plasmon modes in graphene-coated dielectric nanowire is presented. Plasmon modes could be classified by the azimuthal field distribution characterized by a phase factor exp(imφ) in the electromagnetic field expression and eigen equation of dispersion relation for plasmon modes is derived. The characteristic of plasmon modes could be tuned by changing nanowire radius, dielectric permittivity of nanowire and chemical potential of graphene. The proposed model provides a fast insight into the mode behavior of graphene-coated nanowire, which would be useful for applications based on graphene plasmonics in cylindrical waveguide.

RESUMEN

Understanding the mechanism of arsenic (As) mobilization from sediments to groundwater is important for water quality management in areas of endemic arsenic poisoning, such as the Datong basin in northern China. The bulk geochemistry analysis of sediment samples from three 50-m boreholes drilled specifically for this study at As-contaminated aquifers, the groundwaters of which have an As concentration up to 1060 microg/l, revealed that the average bulk concentrations of major and trace elements of the samples are similar to those of the average upper continental crust. The average As content of the sediment samples (18.7 mg/kg) is higher than that of modern unconsolidated sediments (5-10 mg/kg). Moreover, the abundance of elements varied with grain size, with higher concentrations in finer fractions of the sediments, such as silt and clay. The concentration of NH(2)OH-HCl-extracted iron (Fe) strongly correlated with that of extracted As, suggesting that Fe oxyhydroxides may be the major sink of As in the aquifer. The results of microcosm experiments showed that As mobilization from sediments to groundwater is probably mainly related to changes in the redox conditions, with moderately reducing conditions being favorable for As release from sediments into groundwater.
