RESUMEN

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a prominent bioactive compound found in tea, offers numerous health benefits. Previous studies have highlighted its potential in mitigating hyperuricemia. In this study, hyperuricemic mice induced by potassium oxonate (PO) were treated with EGCG or the anti-hyperuricemia medication allopurinol (AP) to investigate the mechanisms underlying their anti-hyperuricemic effects. The results demonstrated that both EGCG and AP significantly reduced serum uric acid (UA) levels. Further analysis revealed that EGCG promoted the expression of UA secretion transporter genes (Oat1 and Oct1) while inhibiting the expression of UA reabsorption transporter genes (Urat1 and Glut9) in the kidney. By 16S rDNA sequencing, EGCG, but not AP, was found to alter the composition of the gut microbiota. Notably, EGCG induced significant changes in the relative abundance of specific bacteria such as Lactobacillus, Faecalibaculum, and Bifidobacterium, which displayed high correlations with serum UA levels and UA-related gene expression. Metabolomic analysis suggested that EGCG-induced modifications in bacterial metabolites might contribute to the alleviation of hyperuricemia. Transcriptomic analysis of the intestinal epithelium identifies 191 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in EGCG-treated mice, including 8 purine-related genes. This study elucidates the anti-hyperuricemic mechanisms of EGCG, particularly its influence on the gut microbiota and gene expression in the intestinal epithelium.

RESUMEN

Leadership in peer groups is an important issue in adolescent socioemotional development, yet it has received limited attention in research. This one-year longitudinal study examined peer group leadership and the roles of social, academic, and psychological characteristics in the dynamics of group leadership. Participants included 1061 Chinese students (initial mean age =11.17 years; SD = 6.98 months; 49.4% female). Data were collected from peer assessments, teacher ratings, and self-reports. The longitudinal social network analysis (SIENA) indicated that peer group leadership was fluid with leadership status evolving over time across groups in a hierarchical manner. Adolescents displaying higher social competence and aggression and lower shyness were more likely to become group leaders. Academic performance and loneliness were not significantly associated with the dynamics of peer group leadership. The results help understand peer group leadership and contributions of social behaviors to the attainment of leadership status in peer groups in early adolescence.

RESUMEN

Lead(II) is a potential carcinogen of heavy-metal ions (HIs). With the wide application of Pb-bearing products including lead alloy products, and new-energy lead-ion batteries, lead pollution has become a tricky problem. To solve such a difficulty, novel ultrathin MoS2-vinyl hybrid membranes (MVHMs) with a "spring" effect were synthesized via co-polymerization of acrylic acid, styrene and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and their adsorptions for HIs were explored. The "spring" effect derived from the interaction between the tendency of the short polyacrylic acid (PAA) chain connected with MoS2 to spread outward and the coulomb force between layers from MoS2 (s-MoS2), which enlarge the spacing of MoS2 layers without changing the number of layers after membrane formation, which changes the swelling membrane to a dense membrane and reduces the original thickness from 0.5 cm to 0.011 mm in the thickness direction. The adsorption experiment revealed that these MVHMs had super adsorption performance and high selectivity for Pb2+ by comparison with other five metal ions: Cu2+, Cd2+, Ni2+, Cr3+ and Zn2+. Especially, the adsorption quantity of MVHMs for Pb2+ could approach 2468 mg/g and the maximum adsorption ratio of qe[Pb2+]/qe[Cu2+] can reach 10.909. These values were much larger than the data obtained with the adsorbents reported in the last decade. A variety of models are applied to evaluate the effect of ionic groups. It was confirmed that -COOH plays a key role in adsorption of HIs and s-MoS2 also has a certain contribution. Conversely, ion exchange plays only a minor role during the period of adsorption process. Effective diffusion coefficient (Deff) of Pb(II) had the largest values among these metal ions. Hence, these hybrid membranes are promising adsorbents for the removal of Pb2+ from water containing various ions.

RESUMEN

Introduction: There have been studies indicating that children's unsociability was associated with poorer socio-emotional functioning in China. Although some researchers have found that parenting behavior would influence the relationship between children's unsociability and adjustment, the role of parental psychological control has not been explored. This study aimed to investigate the moderating effect of parental psychological control on the relationship between unsociability and socio-emotional functioning in Chinese children. Methods: A total of 1,275 students from Grades 3 to 7 (637 boys, Mage = 10.78 years, SD = 1.55 years) were selected from four public schools in Shanghai to participate in this study. Data of unsociability, peer victimization and social preference were collected from peer-nominations, and data of parental psychological control, depressive symptoms and social anxiety were collected from self-reports. Results: There were positive associations between unsociability and peer victimization, depressive symptoms, and social anxiety, as well as a negative association between unsociability and social preference. Parental psychological control moderated these associations, specifically, the associations between unsociability and peer victimization, social preference, and depressive symptoms were stronger, and the association between unsociability and social anxiety was only significant among children with higher level of parental psychological control. Discussion: The findings in the current study highlight the importance of parental psychological control in the socio-emotional functioning of unsociable children in the Chinese context, enlightening educators that improving parenting behavior is essential for children's development.

RESUMEN

Six new 9H-carbazole derivatives (1-6) and nine previously reported compounds (7-15) were isolated from a fermented solid medium of the Thailand mangrove-derived Streptomyces strain, OUCMDZ-5511, under fluoride stress. Compounds 2-5, 12, and 15 were exclusively present in the fluoride-supplemented fermentation medium, while compounds 7-9, 13, and 14 were newly discovered natural products. The molecular structures of the compounds were identified by a spectroscopic analysis. The new compound 2 displayed antiquorum sensing activity against Chromobacterium violaceum ATCC 12472 by reducing the violacein production and inhibiting the biofilm formation in a concentration-dependent manner. The study revealed that compound 2 could be a novel potential inhibitor of quorum sensing.

RESUMEN

Self- and group orientations represent distinct ways of perceiving the relations between the world and the self and are relevant to adolescents' development. Most of the existing studies in this area are cross-sectional, providing little information about how self- and group orientations develop. This 3-year longitudinal study examined the developmental patterns of self- and group orientations and their relations with adjustment among Chinese adolescents. The participants included 1,257 students (648 boys, initial Mage = 13.37 years, SD = 0.63 years). Data on self- and group orientations and social and behavioral adjustment were obtained from multiple sources, including self-reports, peer nominations, and teacher ratings. The results showed that self-orientation increased, and group orientation decreased during early adolescence. Moreover, an increase (slope) in self-orientation was positively associated with subsequent assertive behavior, whereas a slower decrease in group orientation was positively associated with subsequent prosocial behavior and peer preference. The initial level (intercept) of self-orientation was positively associated with later externalizing problems, and the initial level of group orientation was negatively associated with later internalizing problems. The intercepts of self- and group orientations were higher for boys than girls. No significant gender differences were found in the slopes of self- and group orientations or in the associations of intercepts and slopes with adjustment outcomes. The results indicated different developmental patterns of self- and group orientations and their different implications for adjustment in Chinese adolescents. RESUMEN

This study examined relations of affinity for solitude with social-behavioral, academic, and psychological adjustment in Chinese children and adolescents. The participants included 3,417 students (1,714 boys) in fourth, sixth, and eighth grades (Mages = 10, 12, and 14 years, respectively) in China. Data on affinity for solitude were collected from students' self-reports and data on adjustment were collected from multiple sources. The results showed that whereas affinity for solitude was negatively associated with social competence and academic achievement and positively associated with behavioral problems in Grade 4, the associations were weaker or nonsignificant in Grade 6. Moreover, affinity for solitude was positively associated with academic achievement and negatively associated with behavioral problems in Grade 8. Affinity for solitude was negatively associated with psychological adjustment in general, but the associations were weaker in higher grades. The results indicate that the functional meaning of affinity for solitude may differ across developmental periods. Parents, teachers, and professionals should be aware of the different implications of affinity for solitude in childhood and adolescence and use different strategies to support children and adolescents who display affinity for solitude. RESUMEN

The rotes of attempted and completed suicide among adolescents are increasing globally. Social support can help decrease the risk of adolescent suicide, but this aspect has been rarely studied in China. The present study aimed to use the Delphi methodology to establish a set of guidelines for the development of social support resources, with the goal of collectively reducing suicide risks among adolescents in Shanghai. We commenced the study in April 2021, established a research team, searched the keywords using Web of Science from 2016 to 2021 and ultimately designed a pre-evaluation index. Next, following Donabedian's Structure-Process-Outcome model, the research developed a questionnaire comprising 3 level-1, 12 level-2, and 73 level-3 indicators. Ten experts were enlisted to conduct three rounds of e-mail inquiries in order to finalize the indicator system, resulting in 2 level-1, 11 level-2, and 52 level-3 indicators, as well as expert consensus. Our findings indicate that the social support systems should include parents, schools, psychiatric hospitals, social organizations, and government departments, with the government sector being the most important ((M = 9.4). Furthermore, our study revealed that school counselors and psychologists play similar roles to psychiatrists within the interdisciplinary team (M ± S = 9.2 ± 1.1). As per the expert consensus, social support systems should strengthen government-led and interdisciplinary collaboration, prioritize suicide prevention in schools and encourage greater involvement from social organizations.

RESUMEN

The long-term use of tripterygium glycosides (TG) can lead to male reproductive damage. Research indicates that zinc and selenium exhibit a synergistic effect in the male reproductive system, with the combined preparation demonstrating superior therapeutic effects compared to individual preparations. The purpose of this study was to explore the specific mechanism by which zinc and selenium mitigate reproductive toxicity induced by TG in male rats. Rats were randomly assigned to three groups: control group (C group), model group (M group, receiving TG at 30 mg/kg/day), and model + zinc + selenium group (ZS group). The ZS group was also given TG gavage for the first 4 weeks. Starting from the fifth week until the conclusion of the eighth week, the ZS group received an additional protective treatment of 10 mg/kg/day Zn and 0.1 mg/kg/day Se 4 h after TG administration. Following euthanasia, blood samples, rat testis, and epididymis tissues were collected for further experiments. Combined zinc-selenium treatment corrects the imbalance of zinc-selenium homeostasis in testicular tissue induced by TG. This is achieved by upregulating the expression of metal transcription factor (MTF1) and zinc transporters ZIP8 and ZIP14 and downregulating the expression of ZnT10. Improvement of zinc and selenium homeostasis enhanced the expression of zinc-containing enzymes (ADH, LDH, and ALP) and selenoproteins (GPx1 and SELENOP) in the testis. At the same time, zinc and selenium mitigate TG-induced reproductive damage by promoting the activity of antioxidant enzymes and upregulating the expression of proteins associated with the oxidative stress pathway, including Nrf2, Keap1, HO-1, PI3K, and p-AKT.

RESUMEN

The present study examined relations between concern for mianzi, or the social perception of one's prestige and standing in the group, and adjustment in Chinese adolescents. Participants were seventh- and ninth-grade students in rural and urban regions of China (n = 794, Mage = 14 years). Data were obtained from multiple sources including peer assessments, teacher ratings, self-reports, and school records. The results showed that concern for mianzi was associated with social competence, leadership, academic achievement, as well as aggression and mixed peer relationships in rural adolescents. In contrast, concern for mianzi was associated with comprehensive social, school, and psychological adjustment problems in urban adolescents. The results indicate the role of context in shaping the relations between adolescents' concern for mianzi and adjustment.

RESUMEN

Loneliness is a perceived deficit in social relationships that is nested within broader cultural meaning systems. This longitudinal study examined predictors of loneliness in Chinese and U.S. children with the hypothesis that peer relationship parameters (number of friends, social preference, and popularity) mediate the associations between behavior qualities and loneliness differently across countries. Fifth-grade Chinese (n = 576, Mage = 10.58 years) and U.S. (White, Black, Asian, n = 540; Mage = 10.23 years) children completed two waves of assessment within an academic year. Shyness and athletic competence more strongly predicted loneliness for U.S. children, and academic ability, and aggression more strongly predicted loneliness for Chinese children. Popularity was a mediator for U.S. children but not Chinese children.

RESUMEN

Adolescents use various strategies to help their victimized peers during bullying episodes. However, prior research has primarily adopted a variable-centered approach that examines the effect of each defending strategies separately and does not address whether there were different types of defenders who exhibit specific combinations of defending strategies and how these profiles related to youth's adjustment outcomes. Using latent profile analysis, this study identified defending profiles among a sample of Chinese adolescents (N = 1618, Mage = 13.81, SDage = 0.94, 42% girls) and examined whether these profiles differ on victimization experiences and depressive symptoms. The results yielded four defending profiles: nonaggressive defenders (15%), aggressive defenders (7%), average defenders (54%), and infrequent defenders (24%). Aggressive defenders and infrequent defenders exhibited the highest levels of self-reported victimization and depressive symptoms, whereas nonaggressive defenders demonstrated the lowest. There were no statistical profile differences in peer-reported victimization. Findings suggest that investigating the heterogeneity of youth using defending strategies is important for understanding whether defending actually puts youth at increased risk for negative adjustment.

RESUMEN

Listeria monocytogenes, a foodborne pathogen that causes listeriosis with high fatality rate, exhibits multidrug resistance (MDR) known to be progressively increasing. Alternative antibacterial strategies are in high demand for treating this well-known pathogen. Anti-biofilm and anti-virulence strategies are being explored as novel approaches to treat bacterial infections. In this study, one rare antibacterial named setomimycin was isolated from Streptomyces cyaneochromogenes, which showed potent antibacterial activity against L. monocytogenes. Next, the inhibition of biofilm formation and listeriolysin O (LLO) production against L. monocytogenes were investigated at sub-minimal inhibitory concentrations (sub-MICs) of setomimycin alone or combined with kanamycin and amikacin. Crystal violet staining confirmed that setomimycin combining with kanamycin or amikacin could dramatically reduce biofilm formation against L. monocytogenes at sub-MICs, which was further evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). In the meantime, sub-MICs of setomimycin could significantly suppress the secretion of LLO. Furthermore, the transcription of genes associated with biofilms and main virulence factors, such as LLO, flagellum, and metalloprotease, were suppressed by setomimycin at sub-MICs. Hence, the study provided a deep insight into setomimycin as an alternative antibacterial agent against L. monocytogenes.

RESUMEN

The impact of Ba-modified peanut shell biochar (Ba-PSB) on Pb(II) removal was studied and BaCl2 was used as a modifier. It was shown that the PSB obtained at 750 °C had the best adsorption effect, and the Ba-PSB had a larger specific surface area and a good adsorption effect on Pb(II). At pH = 5, concentration was 400 mg/L, time was 14 h, and temperature was 55 °C, the loading amount of black peanut shell biochar (BPSB), red peanut shell biochar (RPSB), Ba-BPSB, and Ba-RPSB reached 128.050, 98.217, 379.330, and 364.910 mg/g, respectively. In addition, based on the non-linear fitting, it was found that the quasi-second-order kinetic model, and isothermal model could be applied to describe Pb(II) adsorption on PSB and Ba-PSB. The adsorption behavior of PSB unmodified and modified was a spontaneous process. Moreover, chemical modification of BPSB, RPSB, Ba-BPSB, and Ba-RPSB for hindering of -COOH and -OH groups revealed 81.81, 77.08, 86.90, and 83.65% removal of Pb(II), respectively, which was due to the participation of -COOH, while 17.61, 21.70, 12.77, and 15.06% was from -OH group, respectively. The increase of cation strength (Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+) will reduce the adsorption capacity of PSB for Pb(II).

RESUMEN

The current study examined the idea that maternal involvement during the COVID-19 school closure period could contribute to the development of adolescents' daily routines, which could ultimately associate with their psychological and academic adjustment after return-to-school. Data were collected from 520 Chinese adolescents (Mage = 12.75 years, SDage = 1.48 years) and their mothers during the COVID-19 school closure and one year after return-to-school. Results indicated that maternal involvement in both education and leisure activities predicted more consistent adolescents' daily routines during the school closure period and then contributed to their more consistent daily routines after return-to-school, resulting in less psychological maladjustment and better academic outcomes. Findings highlight the importance of maternal involvement and daily routines in the context of COVID-19.

RESUMEN

Zinc deficiency has a huge impact on male reproduction. The zinc transporter (ZnT) family is involved in the maintenance of zinc homeostasis and testosterone synthesis. However, the underlying mechanisms remain to be investigated. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to determine the effect of zinc transporter 4 (ZnT4) on testosterone synthesis in male Kunming mice and mouse Leydig cells. The results of this study showed that compared with the zinc normal diet group (Con group), the zinc-deficient diet group (ZnD group) had decreased zinc content and increased ZnT4 expression in testicular tissues, and decreased serum testosterone levels, suggesting that ZnT4 may be involved in Leydig cell injury resulting from a zinc-deficient diet. Subsequently, mouse Leydig cell line TM3 cells were used to analyze the effect of ZnT4 downregulation on TM3 cell proliferation and apoptosis, on testosterone synthesis, and its underlying mechanisms. Here, we show that knockdown of ZnT4 can induce the accumulation of zinc, inhibit the viability, and induce apoptosis in TM3 cells. In addition, knockdown of ZnT4 downregulated testosterone concentration and expression of testosterone synthesis-related proteins steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) and 3ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase/D5-D4 isomerase (3ß-HSD) in TM3 cells, while hCG could rescue their levels. We show that it is ZnT4 that plays a role in testosterone production through a mediated PI3K/Akt/mTOR autophagy pathway, whereas mTORC1 complex inhibitor (Rapa) blocks the decrease in testosterone levels caused by ZnT4 downregulation. In conclusion, the above results indicate that ZnT4 plays an important role in regulating testosterone synthesis.

RESUMEN

Polyphenols have been widely used to treat various chronic skin diseases because they are beneficial in wound healing and show anti-inflammatory effects, however, the mechanism of action remains ambiguous. Previously, we reported the wound healing capability of tea polyphenols (TPP), the major functional component of tea, in vivo. The current study aimed to address the mechanisms of TPP in wound healing during different phases (inflammation, proliferation and remodeling). During the inflammation phase, TPP reduced the production of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1ß, IL-6 and TNF-α) and inhibited infiltration of neutrophils; during the proliferation phase, TPP promoted the expression of growth factor VEGF-A, which can promote vascular endothelial cell division and induce angiogenesis; TPP improved the morphology of the wound and restored the ratio of type III/I collagens during the remodeling phase, as determined by Masson-trichrome staining and Sirius red staining assays. By tracking the changes in the wound area, TPP and recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF), rather than povidone-iodine (PVP-I), were able to promote wound healing. These results suggest that TPP plays a pivotal role in all the key stages of wound healing and displays distinct mechanisms from rhEGF, suggesting clinical significance for the future application of TPP as a natural wound healing agent.

RESUMEN

The literature has established that the capability of visuomotor adaptation decreases with aging. However, the underlying mechanisms of this decline are yet to be fully understood. The current study addressed this issue by examining how aging affected visuomotor adaptation in a continuous manual tracking task with delayed visual feedback. To distinguish separate contributions of the declined capability of motor anticipation and deterioration of motor execution to this age-related decline, we recorded and analyzed participants' manual tracking performances and their eye movements during tracking. Twenty-nine older people and twenty-three young adults (control group) participated in this experiment. The results showed that the age-related decline of visuomotor adaptation was strongly linked to degraded performance in predictive pursuit eye movement, indicating that declined capability motor anticipation with aging had critical influences on the age-related decline of visuomotor adaptation. Additionally, deterioration of motor execution, measured by random error after controlling for the lag between target and cursor, was found to have an independent contribution to the decline of visuomotor adaptation. Taking these findings together, we see a picture that the age-related decline of visuomotor adaptation is a joint effect of the declined capability of motor anticipation and the deterioration of motor execution with aging.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Zinc (Zn)is an essential trace element for spermatogenesis and its deficiency causes abnormal spermatogenesis. OBJECTIVE: The present study was conducted to examine the mechanisms by which Zn-deficient diet impairs sperm morphology and its reversibility. METHODS: 30 SPF grade male Kunming (KM) mice were randomly divided into three groups, 10 mice per group. Zn-normal diet group (ZN group) was given Zn-normal diet(Zn content= 30 mg/kg)for 8 weeks. Zn-deficienct diet group (ZD group) was given Zn-deficienct diet(Zn content< 1 mg/kg)for 8 weeks. Zn-deficient and Zn-normal diet group(ZDN group)was given 4 weeks Zn-deficienct diet followed by 4 weeks Zn-normal diet. After 8 weeks, the overnight fasted mice were sacrificed, and blood and organs were collected for further analysis. RESULTS: The experimental results showed that Zn-deficienct diet leads to increased abnormal morphology sperm and testicular oxidative stress. The rate of abnormal morphology sperm, chromomycin A3(CMA3), DNA fragmentation index (DFI), malondialdehyde (MDA) were significantly increased, and a-kinase anchor protein 4(AKAP4), dynein axonemal heavy chain 1(DNAH1), sperm associated antigen 6(SPAG6), cilia and flagella associated protein 44(CFAP44), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), superoxide dismutase (SOD), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (NRF2), NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1(NQO1)and heme oxygenase 1(HO1) were significantly decreased in the ZD group mice. While the changes in above indicators caused by Zn-deficient diet were significantly alleviated in the ZDN group. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that Zn-deficient diet causes abnormal morphology sperm and testicular oxidative stress in male mice. Abnormal morphology sperm caused by Zn-deficient diet are reversible, and Zn-normal diet can alleviate them.
