RESUMEN

Gradual pollen presentation is a plant reproductive mechanism to improve pollination efficiency and accuracy and promote outcrossing. Vaccinium corymbosum 'Bluecrop' has a typical gradual pollen presentation mechanism. 'Bluecrop' exhibits an inverted bell-shaped flower with a white coloration. By investigating the flower syndrome, pollination characteristics, pollination efficiency, and breeding system of 'Bluecrop', this study aims to explore the adaptive significance of these traits. The results showed 'Bluecrop' released pollen gradually through anther poricidal dehiscence. Among different pollinators, Apis mellifera and Bombus can pollinate effectively, and the mechanism of gradual pollen presentation significantly improved the efficiency of pollen transfer. This characteristic limits the amount of pollen removed by the pollinators and prolongs pollen presentation, thus attracting more pollinators and thereby increasing male fitness. The nectar secretion of 'Bluecrop' is gradual, with a large nectar production and a long phase of nectar secretion, enhance visitation frequencies and the chances of successful pollination. At the same time, campanulate corolla can protect pollen as well as nectar from waste due to environmental factors and other effects. The breeding system of 'Bluecrop' relies mainly on outcrossing because of its low affinity for self-fertilization and good interaction with pollinating insects. Thus, the special floral syndrome and the mechanism of secondary pollen presentation are significant in improving pollination efficiency and promoting the reproductive success of 'Bluecrop' by outcrossing. It can provide a certain theoretical basis for the future propagation breeding of 'Bluecrop'.

Healthcare providers (HCPs) are recommended for priority influenza vaccination due to their high risk of contracting influenza. HCPs greatly aid in targeted population immunization campaigns. Therefore, understanding the factors that influence HCPs' decisions to get vaccinated and to recommend influenza vaccination is essential. However, there currently needs to be more evidence on this topic in China. Qualitative interviews using a semi-structured interview method were conducted with 180 HCPs from urban community hospitals and town hospitals in four cities in Shandong Province during August 2023. The interview content was analyzed using thematic analysis to identify the variables impacting the vaccination and recommendation practices of HCPs, as well as their suggestions for improving vaccination services. The results will help support the future development of precise intervention measures as well as focused education and training.

RESUMEN

Setting time as the fourth dimension, 4D printing allows us to construct dynamic structures that can change their shape, property, or functionality over time under stimuli, leading to a wave of innovations in various fields. Recently, 4D printing of smart biomaterials, biological components, and living cells into dynamic living 3D constructs with 4D effects has led to an exciting field of 4D bioprinting. 4D bioprinting has gained increasing attention and is being applied to create programmed and dynamic cell-laden constructs such as bone, cartilage, and vasculature. This review presents an overview on 4D bioprinting for engineering dynamic tissues and organs, followed by a discussion on the approaches, bioprinting technologies, smart biomaterials and smart design, bioink requirements, and applications. While much progress has been achieved, 4D bioprinting as a complex process is facing challenges that need to be addressed by transdisciplinary strategies to unleash the full potential of this advanced biofabrication technology. Finally, we present future perspectives on the rapidly evolving field of 4D bioprinting, in view of its potential, increasingly important roles in the development of advanced dynamic tissues for basic research, pharmaceutics, and regenerative medicine.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity contributes to both physiological and psychosocial benefits for children and adolescents with disabilities. However, the prevalence of physical inactivity is notably higher among disabled young people compared to their healthy peers. Despite this, there is a lack of constructed knowledge structure, evolutionary path, research hotspots, and frontiers in studies related to physical activity in young people with disabilities. METHODS: The literature related to the research of physical activity in children and adolescents with disabilities was retrieved from the core collection of the Web of Science. The annual publication numbers and the timing, frequency, and centrality of the co-occurrence network with respect to journals, countries, institutions, authors, references, and keywords were analyzed. Additionally, clustering analysis and burst analysis were performed on the references and keywords. All analyses were conducted using CiteSpace. RESULTS: A total of 1308 related articles were included. The knowledge structure of research on the physical activity of disabled children and adolescents, including annual publication numbers, influencing journals, countries, institutions, authors, references, and keywords along with their respective collaborative networks, has been constructed. Furthermore, the research foundation, current hot topics, and research frontiers have been identified by analyzing references and keywords. CONCLUSIONS: Current research hotspots include interventions, therapies, and programs aimed at enhancing specific skills, as well as addressing the satisfaction of competence to improve motivation and the effectiveness of physical activity. There is also a focus on the development of scales for quantitative studies. Future directions may be toward personalized interventions or programs to enhance physical activity levels among youth with disabilities.

A novel Gram-staining-positive actinobacterium with antimicrobial activity, designated CFH 90308T, was isolated from the sediment of a salt lake in Yuncheng, Shanxi, south-western China. The isolate exhibited the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to Microbacterium yannicii G72T, Microbacterium hominis NBRC 15708T and Microbacterium xylanilyticum S3-ET (98.5, 98.4 and 98.2 %, respectively), and formed a separate clade with M. xylanilyticum S3-ET in phylogenetic trees. The strain grew at 15-40 ºC, pH 6.0-8.0 and could tolerate NaCl up to a concentration of 15 % (w/v). The whole genome of strain CFH 90308T consisted of 4.33 Mbp and the DNA G+C content was 69.6 mol%. The acyl type of the peptidoglycan was glycolyl and the whole-cell sugars were galactose and mannose. The cell-wall peptidoglycan mainly contained alanine, glycine and lysine. The menaquinones of strain CFH 90308T were MK-12, MK-13 and MK-11. Strain CFH 90308T contained anteiso-C15:0, anteiso-C17:0, iso-C16:0 and iso-C15:0 as the predominant fatty acids. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between CFH 90308T and the other species of the genus Microbacterium were found to be low (ANIb <81.3 %, dDDH <25.6 %). The secondary metabolite produced by strain CFH 90308T showed antibacterial activities against Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas syringae, Aeromonas hydrophila and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Based on genotypic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic results, the isolate is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Microbacterium, for which the name Microbacterium salsuginis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is CFH 90308T (=DSM 105964T=KCTC 49052T).

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections pose a major threat to human health. HBV can upregulate the expression of the transcription factor Yin Yang 1 (YY1) in in vitro cytological experiments, suggesting an association between YY1 and HBV infection. However, data on YY1 expression in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients are lacking. In this study, we aimed to assess the correlation between YY1 expression and HBV infection. We detected serum YY1 levels in 420 patients with chronic HBV infection, 30 patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection, and 32 healthy controls using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The correlation between YY1 levels and clinical parameters was analyzed. Meanwhile, the changes of YY1 before and after interferon or entecavir treatment were analyzed. YY1 levels in the liver tissues were detected using immunofluorescence staining. The expression of YY1 in HBV-expressing cells was detected through western blotting. Meanwhile, we explored the effects of YY1 on HBV replication and gene expression. We found that YY1 was highly expressed in the serum and liver tissues of CHB patients. Serum YY1 levels positively correlated with HBV DNA and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). Additionally, HBV DNA levels increased but HBsAg levels decreased after HBV-expressing cells overexpress YY1. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that YY1 plays an important role in HBV replication and gene expression, providing a potential target for the treatment of CHB.

PURPOSE: The present study aimed to evaluate the functional outcomes of hip arthroscopy using a noninterportal capsulotomy technique to address labral tears in patients with borderline hip dysplasia (BHD). Additionally, we also compared these outcomes with those of patients with BHD who underwent the standard repaired interportal capsulotomy (RIPC) arthroscopy. METHODS: Data from patients with BHD were retrieved from a database of patients who underwent arthroscopic hip surgery with noninterportal capsulotomy or RIPC to treat labral tears between January 2014 and December 2020. Data collected included both pre- and postoperative patient-reported outcomes (PROs). RESULTS: A total of 58 patients (noninterportal capsulotomy, n = 37; RIPC, n = 21) with a mean age of 30.9 ± 5.6 and 28.6 ± 5.5 years, respectively, met the inclusion criteria. All of the patients underwent a minimal 2-year follow-up. The mean lateral centre-edge angle was 23.3 ± 1.2° in the noninterportal capsulotomy group and 23.7 ± 1.0° in the RIPC group, with no significant difference. The PROs improved from the preoperative to the latest follow-up, with a p < 0.001. There were no differences between the groups. CONCLUSION: Using strict patient selection criteria, hip arthroscopy with noninterportal capsulotomy demonstrated significant pre- to postoperative improvements in patients with BHD and achieved results comparable to those from hip arthroscopy with RIPC. PURPOSE: Whole grains have recently been promoted as beneficial to diabetes prevention. However, the evidence for the glycemic benefits of whole grains seems to conflict between the cohort studies and randomized control trials (RCTs). To fill the research gap, we conducted a meta-analysis to determine the effects of whole grains on diabetes prevention and to inform recommendations. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Clarivate Web of Science, and Cochrane Library until March 2024. We used the risk ratio (RR) of type 2 diabetes to represent the clinical outcomes for cohort studies, while the biomarkers, including fasting blood glucose and insulin, HbA1C, and HOMA-IR, were utilized to show outcomes for RCTs. Dose-response relationships between whole grain intakes and outcomes were tested with random effects meta-regression models and restricted cubic splines models. This study is registered with PROSPERO, CRD42021281639. RESULTS: Ten prospective cohort studies and 37 RCTs were included. Cohort studies suggested a 50 g/day whole grain intake reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes (RR = 0.761, 95% CI: 0.700 to 0.828, I2 = 72.39%, P < 0.001) and indicated a monotonic inverse relationship between whole grains and type 2 diabetes rate. In RCTs, whole grains significantly reduced fasting blood glucose (Mean difference (MD) = -0.103 mmol/L, 95% CI: -0.178 to -0.028; I2 = 72.99%, P < 0.01) and had modest effects on HbA1C (MD = -0.662 mmol/mol (-0.06%), 95% CI: -1.335 to 0.010; I2 = 64.55%, P = 0.05) and HOMA-IR (MD = -0.164, 95% CI: -0.342 to 0.013; I2 = 33.38%, P = 0.07). The intake of whole grains and FBG, HbA1C, and HOMA-IR were significantly dose-dependent. The restricted spline curves remained flat up to 150 g/day and decreased afterward. Subgroup analysis showed that interventions with multiple whole-grain types were more effective than those with a single type. CONCLUSION: Our study findings suggest that a daily intake of more than 150 g of whole grain ingredients is recommended as a population approach for diabetes prevention.

The role of Culex mosquitoes in the transmission of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is crucial, yet the mechanisms of JEV infection in these vectors remain unclear. Previous research has indicated that various host factors participate in JEV infection. Herein, we present evidence that mosquito sialic acids enhance JEV infection both in vivo and in vitro. By treating mosquitoes and C6/36 cells with neuraminidase or lectin, the function of sialic acids is effectively blocked, resulting in significant inhibition of JEV infection. Furthermore, knockdown of the sialic acid biosynthesis genes in Culex mosquitoes also leads to a reduction in JEV infection. Moreover, our research revealed that sialic acids play a role in the attachment of JEV to mosquito cells, but not in its internalization. To further explore the mechanisms underlying the promotion of JEV attachment by sialic acids, we conducted immunoprecipitation experiments to confirm the direct binding of sialic acids to the last α-helix in JEV envelope protein domain III. Overall, our study contributes to a molecular comprehension of the interaction between mosquitoes and JEV and offers potential strategies for preventing the dissemination of flavivirus in natural environments.IMPORTANCEIn this study, we aimed to investigate the impact of glycoconjugate sialic acids on mosquito infection with Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). Our findings demonstrate that sialic acids play a crucial role in enhancing JEV infection by facilitating the attachment of the virus to the cell membrane. Furthermore, our investigation revealed that sialic acids directly bind to the final α-helix in the JEV envelope protein domain III, thereby accelerating virus adsorption. Collectively, our results highlight the significance of mosquito sialic acids in JEV infection within vectors, contributing to a better understanding of the interaction between mosquitoes and JEV.

Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT), a specialized DNA polymerase, is recognized as a promising biomarker for acute leukemia. Herein, taking the advantage of the self-mediated strand elongation property of TdT, a simple and sensitive method for TdT activity assay was developed based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) labeling inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In the presence of TdT, the primer DNA on magnetic beads is elongated with an adenine-rich single stranded long chain that can label poly-thymine modified AuNPs. After acid elution, the labeled AuNPs were detected by ICP-MS, and the signal intensity of 197Au reflected the TdT activity. Under the optimal conditions, the limit of detection for TdT activity is down to 0.054 U mL-1, along with good selectivity and strong tolerance to other interfering proteins. Furthermore, it achieves a straightforward and accurate detection of TdT activity in acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells without sample pre-processing and tool enzyme addition. Therefore, the proposed method shows great promise as a valuable tool for TdT-related biological research and leukemia therapeutics.

Hypertension is a prevalent condition that poses significant challenges in the perioperative management of patients undergoing major non-cardiac surgery, particularly concerning wound healing and scar formation. This meta-analysis assesses the impact of long-term antihypertensive treatment on postoperative wound healing, examining data from seven studies involving patients who received such treatments compared to untreated controls. Our findings reveal that long-term antihypertensive therapy is associated with significantly improved wound healing outcomes, as indicated by lower REEDA scores (I2 = 96%, SMD = -25.71, 95% CI: [-33.71, -17.70], p < 0.01) 1 week post-surgery and reduced scar formation, demonstrated by lower Manchester Scar Scale scores (I2 = 93%, SMD = -37.29, 95% CI: [-44.93, -29.64], p < 0.01) 2 months post-surgery. These results underscore the potential benefits of antihypertensive treatment in enhancing surgical recovery and offer insights into optimising perioperative care for hypertensive patients.

Nanotechnology-based approaches are promising for the treatment of musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders, which present significant clinical burdens and challenges, but their clinical translation requires a deep understanding of the complex interplay between nanotechnology and MSK biology. Organ-on-a-chip (OoC) systems have emerged as an innovative and versatile microphysiological platform to replicate the dynamics of tissue microenvironment for studying nanotechnology-biology interactions. This review first covers recent advances and applications of MSK OoCs and their ability to mimic the biophysical and biochemical stimuli encountered by MSK tissues. Next, by integrating nanotechnology into MSK OoCs, cellular responses and tissue behaviors may be investigated by precisely controlling and manipulating the nanoscale environment. Analysis of MSK disease mechanisms, particularly bone, joint, and muscle tissue degeneration, and drug screening and development of personalized medicine may be greatly facilitated using MSK OoCs. Finally, future challenges and directions are outlined for the field, including advanced sensing technologies, integration of immune-active components, and enhancement of biomimetic functionality. By highlighting the emerging applications of MSK OoCs, this review aims to advance the understanding of the intricate nanotechnology-MSK biology interface and its significance in MSK disease management, and the development of innovative and personalized therapeutic and interventional strategies.

Background and Objectives: Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer mortality in Taiwan. With rapid advancement of targeted therapeutics in non-small cell lung cancers, next-generation sequencing (NGS) is becoming an important tool for biomarker testing. In this study, we describe institutional experience of NGS analysis in non-small cell carcinoma (NSCLC). Materials and Methods: A cohort of 73 cases was identified from the institutional pathology archive in the period between November 2020 and December 2022. Results: Adenocarcinoma was the most common histologic type (91.8%). Most patients presented with stage IIIB and beyond (87.7%). Twenty-nine patients (39.7%) were evaluated at the time of initial diagnosis, while the others had received prior chemotherapy or targeted therapy. The most frequently mutated gene was EGFR (63%), and this was followed by TP53 (50.7%), KRAS (13.7%), RB1 (13.7%), and CDKN2A (13.7%). Clinically actionable mutations associated with a guideline-suggested targeted therapy were identified in 55 cases (75.3%) overall, and in 47.1% of cases excluding EGFR TKI-sensitizing mutation. Biomarkers other than EGFR TKI-sensitizing mutations were compared. Cases without TKI-sensitizing EGFR mutation had more level 1 or 2 biomarkers (excluding EGFR TKI-sensitizing mutations) than cases with TKI-sensitizing EGFR mutations (47.1% versus 20.1%, p = 0.016). Progressive disease was associated with co-occurrence of clinically actionable mutations (20.5% versus 0%, p < 0.05). Eight of the nine cases with co-occurring actionable genetic alternations had an EGFR mutation. After an NGS test, 46.1% of actionable or potentially actionable genetic alternations led to patients receiving a matched therapy. Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that NGS analysis identifies therapeutic targets and may guide treatment strategies in NSCLC. NGS tests may be advantageous over multiple single-gene tests for optimization of treatment plans, especially for those with non-EGFR mutations or those with progressive disease.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of antidepressants is essential for monitoring patient medication to avoid drug toxicity, complications, or nonadherence. Chromatographic techniques with high sensitivity and reproducibility are the main detection method for antidepressants. Effective pretreatment of biological sample processes is necessary prior to instrumental analysis. Magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) has received much attention for its advantages of simple operation, rapidity, cost-effectiveness and low organic solvent consumption. Therefore, the development of a suitable and green magnetic sorbent for the detection of antidepressants in plasma and urine is apparently necessary. (88) RESULTS: A magnetic phytic acid-modified kapok fiber biochar sorbent (Fe3O4/PAKFBC) was successfully synthesized by pyrolytic impregnation and physical milling methods. Fe3O4/PAKFBC exhibited a large specific surface area (214 m2 g-1) and a rich pore structure (5-10 nm). The extraction equilibrium, using 10 mg Fe3O4/PAKFBC, can be completed in about 1 min. The density functional theory (DFT) results showed that the adsorption mechanism of Fe3O4/PAKFBC on the six antidepressants mainly included electrostatic interactions, van der Waals interactions, π-π interactions and weak hydrogen bonding. Examination using the greenness assessment tools showed that the developed method exhibited excellent greenness. By combining with liquid chromatography-ultraviolet (LC-UV), a quantitative method with good linearity (R2 > 0.993) and relative recoveries (92.4-107.7%) and negligible matrix effect (-11.5-6.0%) was developed. The Fe3O4/PAKFBC successfully detected six antidepressants in plasma and urine samples, requiring no pH adjustment with buffer salts. (142) SIGNIFICANCE: The environmental sustainability of the proposed methods was affirmed by six greenness evaluation tools, all indicating exceptional eco-friendliness. The Fe3O4/PAKFBC demonstrated outstanding greenness in both its creation and analytical application, proving highly effective in real sample applications and showcasing potential for broader use. This study contributes to a deeper and broader understanding of the microscopic adsorption mechanism, which can help in the optimization and development of more green sorbents. (69).

Chronic liver diseases caused by various factors may develop into liver fibrosis (LF). Early stage of LF could be reversible. Tanshinone IIA (Tan IIA), an extract from Salvia miltiorrhiza, has been reported to be hepatoprotective. However, the potential targets and mechanism of Tan IIA in the treatment of LF are still unclear. Our study aims at the anti-LF mechanism of Tan IIA through network pharmacological analysis combined with LF-related experiments. Serum biochemical indicators and histopathological examination showed that Tan IIA could ameliorate the process of LF in the CCl4 -induced mouse model. Western blot and immunohistochemical assays showed that Tan IIA decreased the expression of Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog (KRAS), phosphatidylinositide 3-kinases/protein kinase B (PI3K/Akt), and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor/heme oxygenase-1 (Nrf2/HO-1). Compared with the model group, the Tan IIA groups increased the decreased superoxide dismutase activity and glutathione content, while decreasing the increased malondialdehyde content. These results indicate that Tan IIA may play an antioxidant role by inhibiting the expression of KRAS, PI3K/Akt, and Nrf2/HO-1 to ameliorate the progression of LF, which to some extent explains the pharmacological mechanism of Tan IIA in LF. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that Tan IIA could regulate LF via PI3K/Akt and Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathways. It may be an effective therapeutic compound for the treatment of LF.

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to fabricate a Fructus Xanthii and Magnolia liliiflora volatile oils liposomes-loaded thermosensitive in situ gel (gel/LIP/volatile oil) for effectively treating allergic rhinitis via intranasal administration. Patients and Methods: Particle size, polymer dispersity index (PDI), entrapment effectiveness, and cumulative drug permeation of the developed liposomes were assessed. Then, a thermoreversible in situ gel was created using the liposomes loaded with volatile oils of Fructus Xanthii and Magnolia liliiflora. The effectiveness of this treatment for allergic rhinitis was confirmed by evaluating nasal symptoms, and hematological results, after injecting the formulation into the ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized mice, we conducted hematoxylin-eosin staining (HE) and immunohistochemistry to evaluate the outcomes. The effects of the gel/LIP/volatile oil formulation for nasal delivery of volatile oil in the treatment of rhinitis were then assessed. Results: The average particle size was 95.1 ± 3.6 nm, and the encapsulation efficiencies of Fructus Xanthii and Magnolia liliiflora volatile oils were 70.42 ± 5.41% and 67.10 ± 6.08%, respectively. Drug loadings of Fructus Xanthii and Magnolia liliiflora volatile oils were 9.10 ± 0.98% and 16.10 ± 1.03%, respectively. The binary formulation produced a gel rapidly in the nasal cavity with a strong mucosal adherence at a temperature of delivering volatile oil to the nasal mucosa steadily and continuously. After nasal administration, the gel/LIP/volatile oil sustained the volatile oil delivery into the mucosa. In comparison to the monolithic formulations, the gel/LIP/volatile oil binary formulation exhibited superior performance in terms of drug delivery capability and pharmacodynamic effects. Conclusion: This binary preparation displayed the ability to deliver drugs to the nasal mucosa and exhibited positive pharmacodynamic effects in treating OVA-induced rhinitis in mice. As a result, it has the potential to serve as a delivery platform for Traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of allergic rhinitis.

OBJECTIVES: This paper aims to address the challenge of low accuracy in single-modal driver anger recognition by introducing a multimodal driver anger recognition model. The primary objective is to develop a multimodal fusion recognition method for identifying driver anger, focusing on electrocardiographic (ECG) signals and driving behavior signals. METHODS: Emotion-inducing experiments were performed employing a driving simulator to capture both ECG signals and driving behavioral signals from drivers experiencing both angry and calm moods. An analysis of characteristic relationships and feature extraction was conducted on ECG signals and driving behavior signals related to driving anger. Seventeen effective feature indicators for recognizing driving anger were chosen to construct a dataset for driver anger. A binary classification model for recognizing driving anger was developed utilizing the Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm. RESULTS: Multimodal fusion demonstrated significant advantages over single-modal approaches in emotion recognition. The SVM-DS model using decision-level fusion had the highest accuracy of 84.75%. Compared with the driver anger emotion recognition model based on unimodal ECG features, unimodal driving behavior features, and multimodal feature layer fusion, the accuracy increased by 9.10%, 4.15%, and 0.8%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed multimodal recognition model, incorporating ECG and driving behavior signals, effectively identifies driving anger. The research results provide theoretical and technical support for the establishment of a driver anger system.

Extracting lithium from seawater has emerged as a disruptive platform to resolve the issue of an ever-growing lithium shortage. However, achieving highly efficient and durable lithium extraction from seawater in an energy-efficient manner is challenging, as imposed by the low concentration of lithium ions (Li+) and high concentration of interfering ions in seawater. Here, we report a facile and universal strategy to develop photothermal "ion pumps" (PIPs) that allow achieving energy-efficient, augmented, and durable lithium extraction from seawater under sunlight. The key design of PIPs lies in the function fusion and spatial configuration manipulation of a hydrophilic Li+-trapping nanofibrous core and a hydrophobic photothermal shell for governing gravity-driven water flow and solar-driven water evaporation. Such a synergetic effect allows PIPs to achieve spontaneous, continuous, and augmented Li+ replenishment-diffusion-enrichment, as well as circumvent the impact of concentration polarization and scaling of interfering ions. We demonstrate that our PIPs exhibit dramatic enhancement in Li+ trapping rate and outstanding Li+ separation factor yet have ultralow energy consumption. Moreover, our PIPs deliver ultrastable Li+ trapping performance without scaling even under high-concentration interfering ions for 140 h operation, as opposed to the significant decrease of nearly 55.6% in conventional photothermal configuration. The design concept and material toolkit developed in this work can also find applications in extracting high-value-added resources from seawater and beyond.

Natural products have proven to have significant curative effects and are increasingly considered as potential candidates for clinical prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Compared with synthetic drugs, natural products not only have diverse structures but also exhibit a range of biological activities against different disease states and molecular targets, making them attractive for development in the field of medicine. Despite advancements in the use of natural products for clinical purposes, there remain obstacles that hinder their full potential. These challenges include issues such as limited solubility and stability when administered orally, as well as short durations of effectiveness. To address these concerns, nano-drug delivery systems have emerged as a promising solution to overcome the barriers faced in the clinical application of natural products. These systems offer notable advantages, such as a large specific surface area, enhanced targeting capabilities, and the ability to achieve sustained and controlled release. Extensive in vitro and in vivo studies have provided further evidence supporting the efficacy and safety of nanoparticle-based systems in delivering natural products in preclinical disease models. This review describes the limitations of natural product applications and the current status of natural products combined with nanotechnology. The latest advances in nano-drug delivery systems for delivery of natural products are considered from three aspects: connecting targeting warheads, self-assembly, and co-delivery. Finally, the challenges faced in the clinical translation of nano-drugs are discussed.
