This study aimed to evaluate the biotechnological potential of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei Shirota to produce biosurfactants/bioemulsifiers, lipase, and bacteriocins. The production of biosurfactants/bioemulsifiers was evaluated through a central composite rotational design (CCRD) 22. L. paracasei produced bioemulsifiers using MRS supplemented with 4.8% glycerol and pH 6 or 7. In addition, the culture supernatants of L. paracasei were tested for antioxidant, antidiabetic, and lipolytic activities. The tested supernatants did not exhibit antioxidant activity. On the other hand, they showed inhibitory activity for amyloglucosidase (20.7% and 23.9%) and lipolytic activity (16.12 and 19.00 U/mL). In addition, a CCRD 23 was performed to evaluate the production of bacteriocins. The peptone and lactose concentration variables, as well as pH positively influenced the production of bacteriocins by L. paracasei. In conclusion, L. paracasei is a viable source of antidiabetic metabolites, bacteriocins, bioemulsifiers, and lipase, suggesting that they are promising to be applied in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, environmental, food, and biomedical industries.

Nanoparticles play a crucial role in the field of nanotechnology, offering different properties due to their surface area attributed to their small size. Among them, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have attracted significant attention due to their antimicrobial properties, with applications that date back from ancient medicinal practices to contemporary commercial products containing ions or silver nanoparticles. AgNPs possess broad-spectrum biocidal potential against bacteria, fungi, viruses, and Mycobacterium, in addition to exhibiting synergistic effects when combined with certain antibiotics. The mechanisms underlying its antimicrobial action include the generation of oxygen-reactive species, damage to DNA, rupture of bacterial cell membranes and inhibition of protein synthesis. Recent studies have highlighted the effectiveness of AgNPs against various clinically relevant bacterial strains through their potential to combat antibiotic-resistant pathogens. This review investigates the proteomic mechanisms by which AgNPs exert their antimicrobial effects, with a special focus on their activity against planktonic bacteria and in biofilms. Furthermore, it discusses the biomedical applications of AgNPs and their potential non-preparation of antibiotic formulations, also addressing the issue of resistance to antibiotics.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects and economic viability of diets containing different levels of antibiotic and buriti oil (BO) on performance, carcass and cut yields, and relative weight of organs of broilers. A total of 432 one- to 42-day-old male chicks were distributed in a completely randomized experimental design with six treatments, each consisting of six replicates of 12 birds. The treatments consisted of one diet with antibiotic without BO, one diet without antibiotic (DWA) without BO, and four DWA containing increasing levels of BO (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8%). Average weight and weight gain (WG) of broilers fed with DWA + BO were similar to those of birds fed control diet. Feed intake and feed conversion (FC) were not different among treatments. Relative weight of pancreas linearly increased in the birds fed diets containing BO. The inclusion of 0.45 and 0.40% of BO in the diets promoted the improvement of WG and FC, respectively. Cost of feed management, ratio, gross margin, and gross income did not differ among treatments. It was concluded that the inclusion of 0.45% of BO in diets without antibiotics is economically feasible and allows recovering the performance of broilers.

INTRODUCTION: Depression is one of the most disabling diseases globally, with a high disease burden that generates high direct and indirect costs. The incidence of depression is twofold higher in adult women than in men. Biological and psychosocial factors constitute the pathophysiological bases of the condition and due to the complexity of the condition, current understanding is that the "treatment strategy must be multimodal". The objective of this study was to measure the effect of introducing the frequent use of makeup on improving depressive symptoms in adult women of medium-low purchasing power METHODS: Participants with the targeted profile who did not frequently use makeup were selected and randomised to receive (test group) or not (control group) stimuli and makeup products intended for encouraging the frequent use of makeup. The Zung Depression Self-Assessment Scale was used to assess depressive symptoms, with additional assessments on self-image perception using the mirror test and salivary cortisol level. RESULTS: The results demonstrated a sustained reduction in depressive symptoms (8.3 percentage points reduction in the Average Zung Index; P < 0.05), with a significant improvement in self-image perception (25% increase in the average score obtained in the mirror test; P < 0.05) and a specific influence on salivary cortisol levels (55% reduction in salivary cortisol concentration; P < 0.05) after the first makeup application. CONCLUSION: The results show that encouraging the frequent use of makeup, a practice that can be achieved by most people and which is simple and inexpensive to implement, can contribute to effective and sustainable improvement in the well-being and mental health of a significant portion of the population.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a holobiont tablet with rapid dispersibility to provide regulation of the microbiota, virucidal activity, and skin barrier protection. METHODS: A 23 factorial experiment was planned to define the best formulation for the development of the base tablet, using average weight, hardness, dimensions, swelling rate, and disintegration time as parameters to be analyzed. To produce holobiont tablets, the chosen base formulation was fabricated by direct compression of prebiotics, postbiotics, and excipients. The tablets also incorporated solid lipid nanoparticles containing postbiotics that were obtained by high-pressure homogenization and freeze-drying. The in vitro virucidal activity against alpha-coronavirus particles (CCoV-VR809) was determined in VERO cell culture. In vitro analysis, using monolayer cells and human equivalent skin, was performed by rRTq-PCR to determine the expression of interleukins 1, 6, 8, and 17, aquaporin-3, involucrin, filaggrin, FoxO3, and SIRT-1. Antioxidant activity and collagen-1 synthesis were also performed in fibroblast cells. Metagenomic analysis of the skin microbiome was determined in vivo before and after application of the holobiont tablet, during one week of continuous use, and compared to the use of alcohol gel. Samples were analyzed by sequencing the V3-V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene. RESULTS: A handrub tablet with rapid dispersibility was developed for topical use and rinse off. After being defined as safe, the virucidal activity was found to be equal to or greater than that of 70% alcohol, with a reduction in interleukins and maintenance or improvement of skin barrier gene markers, in addition to the reestablishment of the skin microbiota after use. CONCLUSIONS: The holobiont tablets were able to improve the genetic markers related to the skin barrier and also its microbiota, thereby being more favorable for use as a hand sanitizer than 70% alcohol.

INTRODUCTION: The increased prevalence of depression is a global phenomenon, with an estimated 320 million cases worldwide. In Brazil, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that there are about 12 million cases or more, mainly among adult women with lower socioeconomic status, leading to a high consumption of health resources. Studies suggest a positive association of measures related to appearance care on depressive symptoms, but usually with no objective methodology. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of depressive symptoms in adult Brazilian women with lower purchasing power and to verify the association between the intensity of symptoms and the use of makeup. METHODS: A national sample of 2400 cases from all regions of the country, drawn randomly from an online panel representative of the Brazilian population, was studied using an online questionnaire accessible via computer or smartphone, from which the frequency of use of makeup was surveyed, and the Zung Depressive Self-Rating Scale was applied for the inventory of symptoms. RESULTS: A prevalence of 61.4% (0.59-0.63) of depressive symptoms was identified. The association between frequent use of makeup and a lower prevalence of cases with a Zung index suggestive of mild depression was confirmed. Association between frequent use of makeup and lower intensity of depressive symptoms was also identified among cases with a Zung index suggestive of absence of depression. Additionally, an association was identified between the habit of frequent use of makeup and higher economic class as well as the younger age group. CONCLUSION: The results suggest the hypothesis that use of makeup may contribute both to a lower prevalence of mild depression and less expressive symptoms when index of absence of depression is observed.

Mosquito-borne diseases affect millions of people worldwide each year, and the use of a topically applied insect repellent is an economically viable preventative health practice. The general objective of this work was to encapsulate citronella oil (CO) in a nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) to formulate a topical repellent with a long duration of efficacy on the skin and a good safety profile based on minimizing skin penetration. In the studied CO, the main chemical constituents of geraniol, citronellal, and citronellol were identified and subsequently used as markers for the in vitro skin permeation testing (IVPT). An optimal NLC encapsulating CO formulation was developed and had an average particle size of 350 nm. The NLC was then formulated in combination with CO at ratios of 2:1, 1:1, and 1:2 CO:NLC-CO as oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions and compared to CO in the same O/W emulsion base (all at 10% CO in the final O/W topical formulation). The markers geraniol, citronellol, and citronellal were detected in all samples tested F1 (10% CO in O/W emulsion) and F3 (10% CO/NLC-CO 1:1 in O/W emulsion). Even the percentages of F3 markers were higher than F1. The recovery of the percentage balance (based on the total remaining on the skin surface, on the skin, and penetrated through the skin to the receptor) of geraniol, citronellol, and citronellal markers for F1 and F3 was 7.70% and 11.96%; 25.51% and 31.89%; and 5.09% and 4.40%, respectively. The nanoparticle lipid solid forms a repellent reservoir on the skin surface, releasing the active ingredients slowly through volatilization, extending the repellent action, and reducing permeation through the skin. It is possible to assume that the remaining 92.30% and 88.03%; 74.49% and 68.11%; and 94.10% and 95.60% of geraniol, citronellol, and citronellal markers of F1 and F3, respectively, were lost to evaporation. In the in vivo efficacy test carried out with the Aedes aegypti mosquito, F3 was the optimal formulation, providing the greatest repellent action compared to free oil in O/W emulsion. Thermal analysis showed that the NLC-CO raised the boiling point of the encapsulated CO compared to the free oil, suggesting that the controlled release of the CO was a possible mechanism for its prolonged effect. We concluded that the nanocarriers developed with CO were stable and provided improved mosquito-repellent efficacy with minimal skin penetration of the CO actives over 24 h. Indeed, regardless of whether the CO was applied as free oil, a 1:1 mixture of CO (pure/free oil) or NLC-CO applied in an O/W emulsion can be considered safe for topical application due to minimal skin penetration.

Chitosan films are commonly used for wound dressing, provided that this polymer has healing, mucoadhesiveness and antimicrobial properties. These properties can be further reinforced by the combination of chitosan with polysaccharides and glycoproteins present in aloe vera, together with copaiba oleoresin's pharmacological activity attributed to sesquiterpenes. In this work, we developed chitosan films containing either aloe vera, copaiba oil or both, by casting technique, and evaluated their microbial permeation, antimicrobial activity, cytotoxicity, and in vivo healing potential in female adult rats. None of the developed chitosan films promoted microbial permeation, while the cytotoxicity in Balb/c 3 T3 clone A31 cell line revealed no toxicity of films produced with 2 % of chitosan and up to 1 % of aloe vera and copaiba oleoresin. Films obtained with either 0.5 % chitosan or 0.5 % copaiba oleoresin induced cell proliferation which anticipate their potential for closure of wound and for the healing process. The in vivo results confirmed that tested films (0.5 % copaiba-loaded chitosan film and 0.5 % aloe vera-loaded chitosan film) were superior to a commercial dressing film. For all tested groups, a fully formed epithelium was seen, while neoformation of vessels seemed to be greater in formulations-treated groups than those treated with the control. Our work confirms the added value of combining chitosan with aloe vera and copaiba oil in the healing process of wounds.

Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, malaria, yellow fever, chikungunya and Zika virus affect millions of people worldwide each year. Vector control and personal protection are very important to minimize the spread of diseases, and the use of repellent is an economic practice to prevent them. The application of repellent, which acts on the skin to form a vapor layer with a repellent odor to mosquitos, is recommended as an economic prevention and practice. The natural botanical product Citronella is an effective mosquito repellent due to the high concentrations of active chemical constituents present, notably terpenic alcohols. However, citronella tends to evaporate quickly from the skin surface, resulting in a rapid loss of activity. Strategies to increase repellency time, while at the same time minimizing toxicity, are major focuses of research and development in natural repellent products. Here we highlight the role of extended-release systems (ERS) of citronella oil in this approach.

Alternative in vitro methods are important, as there is a call to ban the use of animals in cosmetics research. AIM: To suggest the expansion of the use of in vitro safety techniques recommended by the OECD guidelines and to propose the use of the automation of the in vitro mammalian micronucleus test method by flow cytometry to assess the genotoxic potential of Centella asiatica, Horse Chestnut, Witch Hazel, Blend, Ecoblend, and Caffeine extracts due to their widespread use in commercial products. METHODS: Flow cytometer analysis was performed using the Accuri™ C6 equipment and analyzed using the FlowJo software. Cytotoxicity tests followed OECD 129 guidelines and Phototoxicity followed OECD/GD 432 guidelines. RESULTS: The results showed that the cytotoxicity assay presented a decrease in cell viability when cells were exposed to Centella asiatica from a concentration of 5.0%, horse chestnut 2.5%, Witch hazel 2.5%, Blend 3.13%, and Caffeine 3%, while Ecoblend at the tested concentrations did not show cytotoxicity. In the phototoxicity test, the samples at the tested concentrations showed a PIF <2 being considered potentially non-phototoxic. Finally, in the genotoxicity automated assay, samples were considered potentially non-genotoxic. CONCLUSION: In vitro methods are of paramount importance for the development of pre-clinical tests and the use of test automation helps to reduce the time for analysis and dissemination of results, being a determining factor for the prospect of new compounds.

Circular economy, and concerns about environmental waste, is fostering the development of sustainable alternative products in a range of industries. In the dermo-cosmetic field, the market for sustainable anti-aging skincare products has increasingly grown over the last years. The innovation of this work was to develop chitosan films incorporating lemongrass essential oil (LEO) that could potentially be applied as a green cosmetic skin treatment due to their anti-oxidant and antimicrobial properties, using renewable and biodegradable materials. Different concentrations of LEO (i.e., 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 % w/w) were formulated into chitosan filmogenic matrices, forming skincare bioactive films. Their antioxidant properties and water vapor permeability were strongly governed by the LEO concentration. Chitosan bioactive films containing 0.5 % LEO showed cellular viability over 70 %, while those with 1.5 % LEO had similar antioxidant capacity as NAC (N-acetyl-L-cysteine), used as the positive control to inactivate intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in HaCat cells not treated with H2O2. The developed bioactive films showed activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Our LEO-loaded chitosan biofilms may be used as sheet masks with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties for skincare, with high flexibility and selected permeability, and without cytotoxic risks.

Vascular dysfunction induced by angiotensin-II can result from direct effects on vascular and inflammatory cells and indirect hemodynamic effects. Using isolated and functional cultured aortas, we aimed to identify the effects of angiotensin-II on cyclooxygenase (COX) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and evaluate their impact on vascular reactivity. Aortic rings from mice were incubated overnight in culture medium containing angiotensin-II (100 nmol/L) or vehicle to induce vascular disfunction. Vascular reactivity of cultured arteries was evaluated in a bath chamber. Immunofluorescence staining for COX-1 and COX-2 was performed. Nitric oxide (NO) formation was approached by the levels of nitrite, a NO end product, and using a fluorescent probe (DAF). Oxidative and nitrosative stress were determined by DHE fluorescence and nitrotyrosine staining, respectively. Arteries cultured with angiotensin-II showed impairment of endothelium-dependent relaxation, which was reversed by the AT1 receptor antagonist. Inhibition of COX and iNOS restored vascular relaxation, suggesting a common pathway in which angiotensin-II triggers COX and iNOS, leading to vasoconstrictor receptors activation. Moreover, using selective antagonists, TP and EP were identified as the receptors involved in this response. Endothelium-dependent contractions of angiotensin-II-cultured aortas were blunted by ibuprofen, and increased COX-2 immunostaining was found in the arteries, indicating endothelium release of vasoconstrictor prostanoids. Angiotensin-II induced increased reactive oxygen species and NO production. An iNOS inhibitor prevented NO enhancement and nitrotyrosine accumulation in arteries stimulated with angiotensin-II. These results confirm that angiotensin-II causes vascular inflammation that culminates in endothelial dysfunction in an iNOS and COX codependent manner.

No ensino da odontologia é de extrema importância a junção do conhecimento teórico ao prático. Para desenvolver as habilidades práticas, os cursos superiores em odontologia realizam um aprimoramento pré-clínico em laboratório, simulando a realidade antes do tratamento ser aplicado no paciente. Os manequins têm sido muito utilizados desde então na formação dos profissionais da odontologia. Esta dissertação teve o objetivo de desenvolver um conjunto de manequins odontológicos para alunos do curso de Graduação de Odontologia do Instituto de Ciência e Tecnologia ICT UNESP - SJC através da avaliação da percepção dos docentes no uso dos manequins como ferramentas pedagógicas na aprendizagem. O instrumento de pesquisa utilizado para coleta de dados deste projeto foi uma revisão de literatura sobre o tema associado a análise das respostas de um questionário, formulado e aplicado de maneira remota aos docentes das disciplinas pré-clínicas e clínicas da graduação em Odontologia do ICT. O formulário foi aprovado pelo comitê de ética em pesquisa em seres humanos e contou com 12 questões sobre o aprimoramento e limitações em relação aos manequins odontológicos utilizados na instituição para o ensino superior em odontologia. O convite para participação voluntária desta pesquisa e o questionário desenvolvido no Google forms foi enviado para o e-mail institucional dos docentes. Destes, 15 questionários foram completamente respondidos, representantes de 10 disciplinas práticas/pré-clínicas: Cirurgia Bucomaxilofacial, Clínica Integrada, Dentística, Endodontia, Materiais Dentários, Odontopediatria, Periodontia, Prótese Parcial Fixa, Radiologia e Prótese Parcial Removível. A maioria das disciplinas considerou o manequim como uma ferramenta imprescindível para o ensino e treinamento laboratorial, algumas disciplinas utilizam treinamento em dentes naturais, e outras não conhecem a ferramenta aplicada a sua disciplina. Após análise das respostas, levou-se em consideração as peculiaridades das disciplinas e disposição das mesmas na grade curricular do curso de odontologia. Foi proposto um conjunto de manequins odontológicos personalizado aos alunos da graduação, envolvendo várias disciplinas do curso. Essas informações foram apresentadas a empresa fabricante e parceira para o desenvolvimento de um manequim de excelência para o ensino com a proposta de integrar mais disciplinas e melhorar o aprendizado do aluno de graduação. O conjunto composto por dois manequins completos e acessórios atende as disciplinas de dentística, periodontia e cirurgia e o outro as disciplinas de materiais odontológicos, endodontia, prótese parcial fixa e prótese parcial removível. Adicionalmente, foi proposto melhorias na qualidade dos dentes aproximando essa ferramenta da realidade. Conclui-se que a utilização do conjunto de manequins e acessórios pelos alunos de graduação será melhor aproveitado, pois será permitido a reutilização do manequim em diferentes disciplinas e atenderá disciplinas que não utilizam desse método para o ensino prático. Agrega-se também um menor custo financeiro com a aquisição dos acessórios e reutilização, além de ser uma prática mais sustentável por gerar menor lixo (AU)


In the dental field, the combination of theoretical and pratical knowledge is extremely important. To develop pratic skills, dentistry universities perform a pre-clinical improvement in the laboratory, simulating the reality before the patient's treatment. Mannequins have been used widely since then to participate in the training of dental students, which is still used nowadays.This study aims to develop a kit of dental manequins for Dentistry's students of ICT/UNESP through the evaluation of the perception of the teachers in the use of dental mannequins as pedagogical tool in learning dentistry with students. The research instrument to collect data for this project was a literature review on the subject associated with the analysis of responses to a questionnaire which was formulated and applied remotely to teachers of pre-clinical e clinical disciplines of Dentistry course of ICT UNESP. The form was aprovoved by The Etics Committee for Reseach in Humans Beings and had 12 questions about improvement and limitations in relation to dental mannequins to undergraduate students in this institution. The invitation for voluntary participation to the reseach and the questionaire were prepared by Google Forms and it was sent to the institucional e-mail of the teachers. Of these, 15 responses were turned back.15 teachers represented 10 practical disciplines like Bucomaxilofacial Cirurgy, Integrated Clinical, Dentistics, Endodontics, Dental materials, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, Fixed and Removal Prosthesis and Radiology. The major of disciplines consider mannequin an important tool for college learning and training. Some of them uses natural teeth for this manual training e another one uses the mannequins. After analyzing the answers, taking into account the peculiarities of the disciplines and disposition in the curricular series of Dentistry course, the development of a custumized mannequin kit for undergraduate students were proposed involving the disciplines of the couse. It was developed one kit with two completed manequins and accessories, one of them attending dentistics, periodontics and cirurgy and another one attending dental materials, endodontics, parcial fixed protesis and parcial removed protesis. This information was attributed to the partner company to development of a excelence mannequin for teaching that integrates the disciplines for the best learning to the students. Additionally, some improvements in the quality of teeth were proposed, bringing this tool closer to reality. It is concluded that the use of the set of mannequins and accessories by undergraduate students will be better used, as the reuse of the mannequin in different subjects will be allowed and will serve subjects that do not use this method for practical teaching. It also adds a lower financial cost with the acquisition of accessories and reuse, in addition to being a more sustainable practice for generating less waste. (AU)

Abstract In this study, we investigated the influence of the olfactive stimulus on visual attention. Two groups of 30 subjects participated in two experiments. Both experiments presented two arrays of fruits stimulus intercalated by an olfactive intervention. The stimulus was received in the form of images by the first group and in the form of words by the second group. An eye-tracking device monitored the timekeeping of visual attention dispensed in each stimulus. The results showed that olfactive priming influenced visual attention in both cases but with a greater degree in the images stimulus group. This study shows for the first time that image information is more susceptible to priming olfactive information than wording information. This effect may be associated with the formation of mental images in working memory, aroused by fragrances.

The world population is aging fast and not all cities are prepared to cope with the needs of the elderly people. Cities need to develop strategies for senior citizens including the aspects of health, nutrition, consumer protection, housing, transportation, environment, social welfare, income, employment, safety, and education. The World Health Organization (WHO) created a program dedicated to older adults called the age-friendly city. This program is about creating the environment and opportunities that enable older people to be and do what they value throughout their lives. Most of the elderly population lives in urban spaces, and aging represents a challenge as well as opportunities to the cities all over the world. Recently, only 16 Brazilian cities have received the seal of international certification by meeting the requirements stipulated by the WHO. In the State of Sao Paulo, only two cities have been qualified for this seal. Therefore, the aims of this article are (a) to provide a brief history of this important initiative taken by the WHO and (b) to urge the decision-makers of Brazilian municipalities to develop effective initiatives for their cities to be prepared for this demographic modification.


A população mundial está envelhecendo rapidamente, e nem todas as cidades estão preparadas para lidar com as necessidades dessa população. As cidades devem desenvolver estratégias para os idosos, incluindo aspectos de saúde, nutrição, defesa do consumidor, habitação, transporte, meio ambiente, assistência social, renda, emprego, segurança e educação. A Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS) possui um programa denominado "cidade amiga dos idosos", cujos objetivos são preparar as cidades para o envelhecimento da população e minimizar os custos desse processo proporcionando a inserção ativa dos idosos na vida socioeconômica das cidades. A certificação (selo) de cidade amiga dos idosos pela OMS. A maioria da população idosa vive nos espaços urbanos, o que isso representa um desafio e um ambiente de oportunidades para as cidades. Um desafio, pois ao envelhecer ocorre uma maior demanda pelos cuidados em saúde e instituições de longa permanência. Por outro lado, a população idosa apresenta um potencial de ambiente de negócios específicos para essa faixa etária, como os setores de alimentação, educação, e setores de entretenimento. No Brasil, a população idosa responde por cerca de 20% do consumo nacional. Apenas 16 cidades brasileiras receberam esse selo de certificação internacional para atender aos requisitos estipulados pela OMS. No estado de São Paulo, apenas duas cidades foram qualificadas para a obtenção do selo. Portanto, os objetivos do presente artigo são a) fornecer um breve histórico desse importante programa da OMS; b) despertar nos gestores das cidades a vontade de desenvolver iniciativas efetivas para que as cidades estejam preparadas para um rápido envelhecimento populacional, que tenha potencial para contribuir com a sociedade em suas diferentes capacidades.

Persistent pain is a prevalent symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD), which is related to the loss of monoamines and neuroinflammation. Motor cortex stimulation (MCS) inhibits persistent pain by activating the descending analgesic pathways; however, its effectiveness in the control of PD-induced pain remains unclear. Here, we evaluated the analgesic efficacy of MCS together with serotonergic and spinal glial modulation in an experimental PD (ePD) rat model. Wistar rats with unilateral striatal 6-OHDA and MCS were assessed for behavioral immobility and nociceptive responses. The immunoreactivity of dopamine in the substantia nigra and serotonin in the nucleus raphe magnus (NRM) and the neuronal, astrocytic, and microglial activation in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord were evaluated. MCS, without interfering with dopamine loss, reversed ePD-induced immobility and hypernociception. This response was accompanied by an exacerbated increase in serotonin in the NRM and a decrease in neuronal and astrocytic hyperactivation in the spinal cord, without inhibiting ePD-induced microglial hypertrophy and hyperplasia. Taken together, MCS induces analgesia in the ePD model, while restores the descending serotonergic pathway with consequent inhibition of spinal neurons and astrocytes, showing the role of MCS in PD-induced pain control.

Chitosan films have been extensively studied as dressings in formulations for the treatment of chronic wounds. The incorporation of aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis Miller) into chitosan dressings could potentialize the healing process since aloe vera shows several pharmacological activities. This work aimed to evaluate the effect of aloe vera and chitosan concentrations on the physicochemical properties of the developed films. The films were obtained by casting technique and characterized with respect to their color parameters, morphology, barrier and mechanical properties, and thermal analysis. Results showed that the presence of aloe vera modified the films' color parameters, changed barrier properties, increased fluid handling capacity (FHC), and decreased water-vapor permeability (WVP). The reduced elongation at break resulted in more rigid films. Aloe vera concentration did not significantly change film properties, but the presence of this gel increased the films' stability at temperatures below 200 °C, showing similar behavior as chitosan films above 400 °C. The results suggest a crosslinking/complexation between chitosan and aloe vera, which combine appropriate physicochemical properties for application as wound dressing materials.

Arterial hypertension is a worldwide public health threat. High Blood Pressure (BP) is commonly associated with endothelial dysfunction, nitric oxide synthases (NOS) unbalance and high peripheral vascular resistance. In addition to those, inflammation has also been designated as one of the major components of BP increase and organ damage in hypertension. This minireview discusses vascular inflammatory triggers of high BP and aims to fill the existing gaps of antiinflammatory therapy of hypertension. Among the reasons discussed, enhanced prostaglandins rather than resolvins lipid mediators, immune cell infiltration and oxidative/nitrosative stress are pivotal players of BP increase within the inflammatory hypothesis. To address these inflammatory targets, this review also proposes new concepts in hypertension treatment with non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), nitric oxide-releasing NSAIDs (NO-NSAIDs) and specialized proresolving mediators (SPM). In this context, the failure of NSAIDs in hypertension treatment seems to be associated with the reduction of endogenous NO bioavailability, which is not necessarily an effect of all drug members of this pharmacological class. For this reason, NO-releasing NSAIDs seem to be safer and more specific therapy to treat vascular inflammation in hypertension than regular NSAIDs.
