RESUMEN

The muon hyperfine coupling constant (Aµ) of the muoniated cyclohexadienyl radical (C6H6Mu) has been directly measured in a 5 mM solution of benzene in water by the radio-frequency muon spin resonance (RF-µSR) technique. The relative shift of Aµ in aqueous solution compared with the value in neat benzene (ΔAµ/Aµ = +0.98(5)% at 293 K) can now be compared directly with theoretical predictions. Application of the RF-µSR method to other dilute systems will provide extremely important information on understanding solvent effects.

RESUMEN

The self-diffusion coefficient of Li(+) ions (D(Li)) in the positive electrode material Li(x)(Co(1/3)Ni(1/3)Mn(1/3))O2 has been estimated by muon-spin relaxation (µ(+)SR) using powder samples with x = 1-0.49, which were prepared by an electrochemical reaction in a Li-ion battery. Here, since the implanted muons sense a slight change in the internal magnetic field due to Li-diffusion, µ(+)SR provides an intrinsic D(Li) through the temperature dependence of the nuclear field fluctuation rate (ν) [Sugiyama et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 2009, 103, 147601]. Both D(Li) at 300 K and activation energy (E(a)) were estimated to be ∼2.9 × 10(-12) cm(2) s(-1) and 0.074 eV for the x = 1 sample, ∼11.0 × 10(-12) cm(2) s(-1) and 0.097 eV for x = 0.70, and ∼8.9 × 10(-12) cm(2) s(-1) and 0.062 eV for x = 0.49, assuming that the diffusing Li(+) ions mainly jump from a regular occupied site to a regular vacant site. The estimated D(Li) was smaller by roughly one order of magnitude than those for Li(x)CoO2 in the whole x range measured. Furthermore, by making comparison with D(Li) obtained by electrochemical measurements, the reactive surface area of the Li(x)(Co(1/3)Ni(1/3)Mn(1/3))O2 electrode in a liquid electrolyte was found to strongly depend on x particularly at x > 0.8.

Muon spin relaxation and powder neutron diffraction have been combined to study three lithium cobalt nitride battery materials. Neutron diffraction shows that these retain the P6/mmm space group of Li(3)N with Co located only on Li(1) sites. The lattice parameters vary smoothly with the degree of metal substitution, such that the [Li(2)N] layers expand while the layer separation contracts, as observed previously for similar series of Cu- and Ni-substituted materials. However, in contrast to the latter, the Li(3-x-y)Co(x)N phases exhibit Curie-Weiss paramagnetism and this prevents the use of nuclear magnetic resonance to measure Li(+) transport parameters. Therefore, muon spin relaxation has been employed here as an alternative technique to obtain quantitative information about Li(+) diffusion. Muon spin relaxation shows that Li(+) diffusion in Li(3-x-y)Co(x)N is anisotropic with transport confined to the [Li(2)N] plane at low temperature and exchange between Li(1) and Li(2) sites dominant at high temperature. By a comparison with previous studies some general trends have been established across a range of Cu-, Ni- and Co-substituted materials. For intra-layer diffusion E(a) decreases as metal substitution increases and the corresponding expansion of the layers results in a more open pathway for Li(+) diffusion. However, an optimal value of x is found with a ≈ 3.69 Å after which the concomitant contraction in layer spacing reduces the polarizability of the lattice framework.

The effects of brassica green manures on Globodera pallida were assessed in vitro and in soil microcosms. Twelve of 22 brassica accessions significantly inhibited the motility of G. pallida infective juveniles in vitro. Green manures of selected brassicas were then incorporated into soil containing encysted eggs of G. pallida. Their effect on egg viability was estimated by quantifying nematode actin 1 mRNA by RT-qPCR. The leaf glucosinolate profiles of the plants were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. Three Brassica juncea lines (Nemfix, Fumus, and ISCI99) containing high concentrations of 2-propenyl glucosinolate were the most effective, causing over 95% mortality of encysted eggs of G. pallida in polyethylene-covered soil. The toxic effects of green manures were greater in polyethylene-covered than in open soil. Toxicity in soil correlated with the concentration of isothiocyanate-producing glucosinolate but not total glucosinolate in green manures.

RESUMEN

The thermal spin transition that occurs in the polymeric chain compound [Fe(NH(2)trz)3](NO3)2 above room temperature has been investigated by zero-field muon spin relaxation (microSR) over the temperature range approximately 8-402 K. The depolarization curves are best described by a Lorentzian and a Gaussian line that represent fast and slow components, respectively. The spin transition is associated with a hysteresis loop of width DeltaT = 34 K (T1/2 upward arrow = 346 K and T1/2 downward arrow = 312 K) that has been delineated by the temperature variation of the initial asymmetry parameter, in good agreement with previously published magnetic measurements. Zero-field and applied field (20-2000 Oe) microSR measurements show the presence of diamagnetic muon species and paramagnetic muonium radical species (A = 753 +/- 77 MHz) over the entire temperature range. Fast dynamics have been revealed in the high-spin state of [Fe(NH(2)trz)3](NO3)2 with the presence of a Gaussian relaxation mode that is mostly due to the dipolar interaction with static nuclear moments. This situation, where the muonium radicals are totally decoupled and not able to sense paramagnetic fluctuations, implies that the high-spin dynamics fall outside the muon time scale. Insights to the origin of the cooperative effects associated with the spin transition of [Fe(NH(2)trz)3](NO3)2 through muon implantation are presented.

RESUMEN

This study introduces laser-muon spin spectroscopy in the liquid phase, which extends muonium chemistry in liquids to the realm of excited states and enables the detection of muoniated molecules by their spin evolution after laser excitation. This leads to new opportunities to study the Kinetic Isotope Effects (KIEs) of muonium/atomic hydrogen reactions and to probe transient chemistry in radiolysis processes involved in muonium formation, as well as muoniated intermediates in excited states.

RESUMEN

We characterize the spontaneous magnetic field, and determine the associated temperature T(g), in the superconducting state of (Ca(x)La(1-x)) (Ba(1.75-x)La(0.25+x)) Cu(3)O(y) using zero and longitudinal field muon spin resonance measurements for various values of x and y. Our major findings are (i) T(g) and T(c) are controlled by the same energy scale, (ii) the phase separation between hole poor and hole rich regions is a microscopic one, and (iii) spontaneous magnetic fields appear gradually with no moment size evolution.
