RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare and aggressive tumor, with a poor prognosis. MPM needs to find prognostic factors of survival. We provided the management of patients with MPM and sought to determine whether pre-treatment levels of derived neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (dNLR) as well as PD-L1 expression were reliable prognostic factors of survival. METHODS: We conducted a single-institution retrospective study, including all patients with MPM treated at La Paz University Hospital between December 2009 and March 2018. Baseline disease, demographics, clinical data, treatment characteristics and complete blood cell counts were collected. We examined dNLR at baseline and data for PD-L1 expression were analyzed in tumor cells by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: We included 25 patients. The median overall survival (OS) was 15.7 months (95% CI 11.3-20.0). 5 patients had a dNLR greater than 3 (20%). Patients with a dNLR greater than 3 had shorter median OS (8.5 months), than patients with a dNLR less than 3 (17.0 months), with statistically significant differences (p = 0.038). Ten patients (40%) had positive PD-L1 expression (≥ 1%). Patients with positive PD-L1 expression had shorter median OS (8.5 months) than patients with negative PDL1 expression (15.7 months), but without statistically significant association (p = 0.319). CONCLUSION: The survival data obtained in our sample are consistent with those previously reported. Pretreatment levels of dNLR greater than 3 and positive PD-L1 expression could be significant prognostic factors for poor survival in patients with MPM. Further and prospective studies are needed to explore this relationship and to derive definitive conclusions.

The aim of this study is to use a multilayer perceptron (MLP) artificial neural network (ANN) for phaseless imaging the human heel (modeled as a bilayer dielectric media: bone and surrounding tissue) and the calcaneus cross-section size and location using a two-dimensional (2D) microwave tomographic array. Computer simulations were performed over 2D dielectric maps inspired by computed tomography (CT) images of human heels for training and testing the MLP. A morphometric analysis was performed to account for the scatterer shape influence on the results. A robustness analysis was also conducted in order to study the MLP performance in noisy conditions. The standard deviations of the relative percentage errors on estimating the dielectric properties of the calcaneus bone were relatively high. Regarding the calcaneus surrounding tissue, the dielectric parameters estimations are better, with relative percentage error standard deviations up to ≈ 15%. The location and size of the calcaneus are always properly estimated with absolute error standard deviations up to ≈ 3 mm. Microwave tomography of the calcaneus using phaseless data. Simulations were inspired in Computed Tomography images from real heels (above). Inverse problem was solved using Multilayer Perceptron Artificial Neural Network (below).

The control of the self-assembly (SA) process and nanostructure orientation in diblock copolymer (DBC) thick films is a crucial technological issue. Perpendicular orientation of the nanostructures in symmetric and asymmetric poly(styrene)-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) block copolymer films obtained by means of simple thermal treatments was demonstrated to occur in well-defined thickness windows featuring modest maximum values, thus resulting in low aspect ratio (h/d < 2) of the final lithographic mask. In this manuscript, the thickness window corresponding to the perpendicular orientation of the cylindrical structures in asymmetric DBC is investigated at high temperatures (190 °C ≤ T ≤ 310 °C) using a rapid thermal processing machine. A systematic study of the annealing conditions (temperature and time) of asymmetric PS-b-PMMA (Mn = 67.1, polydispersity index = 1.09) films, with thicknesses ranging from 10 to 400 nm, allowed ordered patterns, with a maximum value of orientational correlation length of 350 nm, to be obtained for film thicknesses up to 200 nm. The complete propagation of the cylindrical structures through the whole film thickness in a high aspect ratio PS template (h/d ≈ 7) is probed by lift-off process. Si nanopillars are obtained having the same lateral ordering and characteristic dimensions of the DBC lithographic mask as further confirmed by grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering experiments.
