RESUMEN

Health literacy is closely related to the incidence of major chronic diseases and its related behaviors such as cancer-related behaviors. This study explored how the cancer health literacy level affects cancer-related behaviors. About one to two villages from six cities of Shandong province were selected as sample areas. Professionals conducted face-to-face interviews with the participants. Finally, 1200 residents completed 1085 effective questionnaires. Data were analysed from a cross-sectional survey in 2019, which included 1085 residents in six cities/counties of Shandong province, China. The result showed that residents with high cancer health literacy were more likely to eat fruits and vegetables frequently, avoid eating moldy food and take exercise. Besides, they were more likely to engage in health education and have a higher willingness to pay for cancer screenings. Most residents in Shandong province have a basic level of cancer health literacy. Improving the cancer health literacy of the population can be an effective strategy to promote a healthier lifestyle, thereby reducing the incidence rates related to cancers.

Controlling the formation of clathrate hydrates is crucial for advancing hydrate-based technologies. However, the microscopic mechanism underlying clathrate hydrate formation through nucleation remains poorly elucidated. Specifically, the critical nucleus, theorized as a pivotal step in nucleation, lacks empirical validation. Here, we report uniform nanoparticles, e.g., graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets and gold or silver nanocubes with controlled sizes, as nanoprobes to experimentally measure the size of the critical nucleus of tetrahydrofuran (THF) clathrate hydrate formation. The capability of the nanoparticles in facilitating THF clathrate hydrate nucleation displays generally an abrupt change at a nanoparticle-size-determined specific supercooling. It is revealed that the free-energy barrier shows an abrupt change when the nanoparticles have an approximately the same size as that of the critical nucleus. Thus, it is inferred that THF clathrate hydrate nucleation involves the creation of a critical nucleus with its size being inversely proportional to the supercooling. By proving the existence and determining the supercooling-dependent size of the critical nucleus of the THF clathrate hydrates, this work brings insights in the microscopic pictures of the clathrate hydrate nucleation.

BACKGROUND: Depressed mood affects a significant number of patients with cancer, and can impair their quality of life and interfere with successful treatment. Our study aims to create a predictive model for identifying high-risk groups of depressed mood in cancer patients, offering a theoretical support for preventing depressed mood in these individuals. METHODS: The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) provided the data for this research, which used CES-D as a tool to identify individuals with depressed mood. Influencing factors of depressed mood in cancer patients was analyzed using a binary logistic regression model. Using the Harvard Cancer Index, we classified the high-risk patients for depressed mood. RESULTS: In present study, 52.96 % of cancer patients met criteria for depressed mood based on the CES-D. Significant correlations were found between depressed mood and factors such as gender, self-rated health, sleep duration, exercise, satisfaction with family, residence, education, life satisfaction, and medical insurance. Utilizing the Harvard Cancer Index, we classified patients into five risk levels for depressed mood, revealing a significant variation in the number of depressive patients across these levels (x2=99.82, P < 0.05). Notably, the incidence of depressed mood increased with the risk level among cancer patients (x2=103.40, P < 0.05). LIMITATIONS: Lack of data on tumor typing and subgroups makes it unlikely to explore the specifics of depressed mood in patients with various types of cancer. CONCLUSION: The determinants of depressed mood in cancer patients are multi-dimensional. The Harvard Cancer Index may be helpful in identifying high-risk populations.

Background: The fluctuation or even loss of estrogen level caused by menopause in women, and most gynecological cancers often occur before and after menopause, so the age of menopause may be related to the occurrence of gynecological cancer. Aim: To investigate whether the age at menopause is independently associated with the incidence of gynecological cancers and to analyze the possible influencing factors. Methods: We selected the NHANES public database to conduct the study, and by excluding relevant influencing factors, we finally included 5706 NHANES participants who had full data on age at menopause and the occurrence of gynecologic cancers to analyze the relationship between the amount of age at menopause and gynecologic cancers based on univariate or multifactorial logistic regression analysis. Further, the relationship between age at menopause and the prevalence of different gynecologic cancers was investigated, and changes in the prevalence of different gynecologic cancers by age at menopause subgroups were observed. Finally, other relevant factors affecting the prevalence of gynecologic cancers were further investigated by subgroup analysis as well as subcluster analysis. Results: Univariate logistic regression analysis between age at menopause and gynecologic tumor prevalence revealed a negative association between age at menopause and the prevalence of common gynecologic cancers ovarian and cervical cancer, and after adjusting for the effects of covariates, a higher risk of gynecologic tumors was found with statistically significant differences at earlier age at menopause. The regression results showed a negative association between age at menopause and gynecologic cancer prevalence in cervical and ovarian cancer patients (P<0.01,P<0.01). Cervical cancer (OR: 0.91, 95% CI: 0.87,0.94) and ovarian cancer (OR: 0.90, 95% CI: 0.86, 0.95) were more prevalent among those with younger age at menopause. Conclusion: Age at menopause is negatively associated with the prevalence of cervical and ovarian cancers, and the earlier the age at menopause, the greater the risk of developing gynecological cancers.

Background: The low uptake rate of upper gastrointestinal cancer (UGC) screening substantially reduces the benefits of endoscopic screening. This study aimed to obtain residents' UGC screening preferences to optimize screening strategies and increase the participation rate. Methods: A discrete choice experiment (DCE) was conducted to assess UGC screening preferences of 1,000 rural residents aged 40 to 70 years from three countries (Linqu, Feicheng, and Dongchangfu) of Shandong province in China. The DCE questionnaire was developed from five attributes: out-of-pocket costs, screening interval, regular follow-up for precancerous lesions, mortality reduction, and screening technique. The data from the DCE were analyzed within the framework of random utility theory using a mixed logit model. Results: In total, 926 of 959 residents who responded were analyzed. The mean (SD) age was 57.32 (7.22) years. The five attributes all significantly affected residents' preferences, and the painless endoscopy had the most important impact (ß=2.927, P<0.01), followed by screening interval of every year (ß = 1.184, P<0.01). Policy analyses indicated that switching the screening technique to painless endoscopy would increase the participation rate up to 89.84% (95%CI: 87.04%-92.63%). Residents aged 40-49, with a history of cancer, with a family income of more than ¥30,000 were more likely to participate in a screening. Conclusions: UGC screening implementation should consider residents' preferences to maximize the screening participation rate. Resources permitting, we can carry out the optimal screening program with shorter screening intervals, lower out-of-pocket costs, less pain, follow-up, and higher UGC mortality reduction.

The exploitation of biocompatible ice-control materials especially the small molecules for non-vitreous cryopreservation remains challenging. Here, we report a small molecule of fulvic acid (FA) with strong hydration ability, which enables non-vitreous cellular cryopreservation by reducing ice growth during freezing and reducing ice recrystallization/promoting ice melting during thawing. Without adding any other cryoprotectants, FA can enhance the recovery of sheep red blood cells (RBCs) by three times as compared with a commercial cryoprotectant (hydroxyethyl starch) under a stringent test condition. Investigation of water mobility reveals that the ice-control properties of FA can be ascribed to its strong bondage to water molecules. Furthermore, we found that FA can be absorbed by RBCs and mainly locates on membranes, suggesting the possible contribution of FA to cell protection through stabilizing membranes. This work bespeaks a bright future for small-molecule cryoprotectants in non-vitreous cryopreservation application.

The spontaneous freezing of microdroplets around 233 K has long been regarded as the occurrence of homogeneous ice nucleation. The corresponding temperature has been directly regarded as the homogeneous ice nucleation temperature, which is an intrinsic character of water. However, many recent investigations indicate that the spontaneous freezing may be still induced by surfaces of the water microdroplets or the residual impurities inside. Therefore, it is highly desired to reveal with solid evidence the exact origin of the spontaneous freezing. Here we show with no ambiguity that the spontaneous freezing between 233 and 235 K is actually triggered by the surface of microdroplets, as the nucleation rate is found to be proportional to the surface area of droplets, via systematically investigating the freezing of water droplets with varying sizes under various cooling rates followed by a new approach in data analysis. The conclusion is further consolidated by published experimental data from other groups when using our data analysis approach. This study is critical for understanding the sources of "no-man's land" and features of homogeneous nucleation, as well as studying the structure and properties of deeply supercooled liquid water.

Although it is crucial to the formation of cirrus clouds and consequently the climate on Earth, the unambiguous effect of carbonaceous materials (CM) on ice nucleation remains to be unveiled as the chemical variation on the surface of CM is always complicated by the change in morphology. Here, we separately investigate the effects of the surface chemistry and morphology of CM on ice nucleation by studying ice nucleation on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite surfaces treated with different types of plasmas. We discover unambiguously that increasing the density of hydroxyl groups leads to an increased activity of ice nucleation on the surface of graphene, while no observable effects are found when carboxylic groups are introduced. Analysis based on the classical nucleation theory reveals that the increase in the density of hydroxyl groups on the graphene surface results in an increased binding energy between the ice nucleus and the graphene surface, which consequently facilitates the formation of the critical ice nucleus.

ZNF350, a BRCA1-interacting protein, could mediate BRCA1-induced sequence-specific transcriptional repression of several genes, including GADD45α. As a potential breast cancer susceptibility gene, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), especially missense SNPs, may influence the transcriptional repression of its target tumor suppressor genes and individuals' breast cancer risk. Using the gene-based haplotype-tagging SNPs strategy, we evaluated the association between six ZNF350 polymorphisms and breast cancer risk in a case-control set from a northern Chinese population. The impact of ZNF350 variations on transcriptional repression of GADD45α was also examined. It was found that ZNF350 rs2278420 (L66P) and rs2278415 (S501R) missense genetic variants are in complete linkage disequilibrium and have a significant impact on inter-individual susceptibility to breast cancer. Additionally, ZNF350 GGCGT or GGCGC haplotype is also associated with a significantly increased breast cancer risk compared with the GGCAC haplotype. ZNF350 L66P variant modifies the risk of breast cancer not only by itself but also in a gene-environment interaction manner with age, age at menarche, menopause status, or estrogen receptor status. Interestingly, we observed that ZNF350 L66P and S501R SNPs could weaken the capability of ZNF350-mediated GADD45α transcription repression and it may be an underlying mechanism of the observed epidemiological associations. Our results highlight ZNF350 as an important gene in human mammary oncogenesis and ZNF350 missense genetic polymorphisms confer susceptibility to breast cancer.
