RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Accurate prediction of the progression of preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD) is crucial for improving clinical management and disease prognosis. The objective of this study was to develop and validate clinical-radimoics integrated model to predict the time to progression (TTP) and disease risk stratification of preclinical AD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 244 cases (mean age: 73.8 ± 5.5 years, 120 women) from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database were randomly divided into the training cohort (n = 172) and validation cohort (n = 72) using a 7:3 ratio. Clinical factors were identified by univariate and multivariate COX regression. Radiomics features were extracted from GM, WM and CSF of T1WI images and selected by Spearman correlation analysis and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO). Using selected clinical factors and radiomics features, the clinical, radimocis and clinical-radiomics nomogram models were developed for predicting the TTP. The performance of each model was assessed by C-index. The risk stratification ability and predicting efficacy of the clinical-radiomics model were utilizing the Kaplan-Meier curve and receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve. RESULTS: The C-index of clinical, radimocis and clinical-radiomics models were 0.852 (95% confidence interval[CI]:0.810-0.893), 0.863 (95%CI:0.816-0.910) and 0.903 (95%:0.870-0.936) in the training cohort and 0.725 (95%CI:0.630-0.820), 0.788 (95%CI:0.678-0.898), 0.813(95%CI:0.734-0.892) in the validation cohort. The AUCs of the multi-predictor nomogram at 1-, 3-, 5- and 7-year were 0.894, 0.908, 0.930, 0.979 in the training cohort and 0.671, 0.726, 0.839, 0.931 in the validation cohort. CONCLUSION: In this study, we constructed a clinical-radimoics integrated model to predict the progression of preclinical AD and stratified the risk of disease progression in preclinical AD.

Piezoelectric-assisted photocatalysis has a huge potential in solving the energy shortage and environmental pollution problems, and imaging their detailed charge-transfer process can provide in-depth understanding for the development of high-active piezo-photocatalysts; however, it is still challenging. Herein, topotactic heterostructures of TiO2@BaTiO3 (TO@BTO-S) were constructed by the epitaxial growth of ferroelectric BaTiO3 mesocrystals on TiO2-{001} facets, resulting in a ferroelectric photocatalyst with a polarization orientation on the surface. Notably, the photoinduced charge transfer in ferroelectric TiO2@BaTiO3 was accurately monitored and directly visualized at the single-particle level by the advanced photoluminescence (PL) imaging microscopy systems. The longer PL lifetime of TO@BTO-S demonstrated the efficient charge separation caused by a built-in electric field, which is constructed by the polarization orientation of BaTiO3 mesocrystals. Therefore, the TO@BTO-S heterostructure exhibits efficient piezoelectric-assisted photocatalytic pure water splitting, which is 290 times higher than photocatalysis. This work revealed time/spatial-resolved photoinduced charge transfer in piezoelectric assistance photocatalysts at the single-particle level and demonstrated the great role of polarization orientation in promoting charge transfer for photocatalysis.

The occurrence and risk of N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine-quinone (6PPD-Q), derived from the oxidation of the tire antidegradant 6PPD, has raised significant concern since it was found to cause acute mortality in coho salmon when exposed to urban runoff. Given the short half-life period and low solubility of 6PPD-Q, reliable in situ measurement techniques are required to accurately understand its occurrence and behaviour in aquatic environments. Here, using the diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) method with HLB as a binding agent, we developed a new methodology to measure 6PPD-Q in urban waters. 6PPD-Q was rapidly and strongly adsorbed on the HLB-binding gel and was efficiently extracted using organic solvents. The HLB-DGT accumulated 6PPD-Q linearly for >7 d and its performance was not significantly affected by pH (6.5-8.5), ionic strength (0.0001-0.5 M) or dissolved organic matter (0-20 mg L-1). Field evaluation of the DGT method demonstrated its effectiveness in urban runoff, detecting 6PPD-Q levels of 15.8-39.5 ng L-1 in rivers. In snowmelt, DGT detected 6PPD-Q levels of 210 ng L-1 which is two times higher than the value obtained by grab sampling. 6PPD-Q levels were much higher in snowmelt than those in rivers. This indicates that snowfall constitutes an important transport pathway for 6PPD-Q and that DGT effectively captured the fraction continuously released from dust particles in the snow samples. 6PPD-Q posed a substantial risk to migratory fish in urban waters, and its release from tire wear particles requires further investigation. This study is the first to develop a DGT-based method for 6PPD-Q determination in urban waters, and the method can ensure an accurate measurement of the release of 6PPD-Q to the environment, particularly in rainfall or snowmelt, important pathways for its entry into the aquatic environment.

Background: Concomitant administration of COVID-19, influenza, and pneumococcal vaccines could reduce the burden on healthcare systems. However, the immunogenicity and safety of various combinations of a third booster dose of SARS-CoV-2 inactivated vaccine (CoronaVac), inactivated quadrivalent influenza vaccine (IIV4), and 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23), particularly in different age groups, is still unknown. Methods: A phase 4, randomized, open-label, controlled trial was conducted in Beijing, China. 636 healthy adults were divided into two age groups (18-59 and ≥60 years) and randomized equally into three groups: CoronaVac and IIV4 followed by PPV23; CoronaVac and PPV23 followed by IIV4; or CoronaVac followed by IIV4 and PPV23, with a 28-day interval between vaccinations. Immunogenicity was evaluated by measuring antibody titers, and safety was monitored. ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT05298800. Results: Co-administration of a third dose of CoronaVac, IIV4, and PPV23 in any combination was safe. Among adults aged 18-59, co-administration with PPV23 maintained non-inferiority of antibody levels for CoronaVac and IIV4, despite a slight reduction in antibody responses. This reduction was not observed in participants ≥60 years. Furthermore, co-administration of IIV4 and PPV23 affected seroconversion rates for both vaccines. Conclusions: Co-administration of the third dose of SARS-CoV-2 inactivated vaccine with the influenza vaccine, followed by PPV23, may be optimal for adults aged 18-59. In adults ≥60, all vaccine combinations were immunogenic, suggesting a flexible vaccination approach. Since antibody measurements were taken 28 days post-vaccination, ongoing surveillance is essential to assess the longevity of the immune responses.

Antibiotic contamination and eutrophication in mariculture have become problems that cannot be ignored, and enrofloxacin (ENR), as an example, is especially widely used in mariculture. This study firstly revealed that Sesuvium portulacastrum, a plant with world-wide distribution in coastal zones, with its rhizosphere microorganisms, could remove ENR as well as nutrients. The S. portulacastrum system could degrade ENR to small-molecule products 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolin-4-ol and (2,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-cyclopropylamine. And there were 81.3-39.2 % removals of ENR with 0.01-100 mg/L. Although ENR significantly influenced functions of rhizosphere microbial community, like decreasing nitrogen fixation, shifting trophic strategies from phototrophy to chemoheterotrophy, nutrients (NH4+-N, NO2--N, NO3--N and total dissolved phosphorus) removal of S. portulacastrum system was essentially unaffected at low ENR concentration (< 1 mg/L). The removal mechanism of S. portulacastrum system was explored. Neither of the isolated root exudates and rhizosphere bacteria could degrade ENR, however, without rhizosphere bacteria, ENR removal rate would decrease. Root proteins including oxidase, decarboxylase, dehydrogenase, such as laccase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, delta-1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate dehydrogenase were overexpressed. Additionally, endocytosis is a pathway for antibiotics to enter S. portulacastrum. This study demonstrated that S. portulacastrum system could be used for remediation of antibiotics-nutrients combined pollution, and deepened understanding the antibiotic removal mechanism of macrophytes in mariculture, moreover, provided new macroplant species and a theoretical basis for antibiotics removal in aquatic systems.

Controversies persist about the protective effects of vaccines against acute cardiovascular events. Using electronic medical records from hospitals and influenza vaccine administration data in Beijing, China, we studied individuals vaccinated between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2018, who experienced at least one acute cardiovascular event within two years. A self-controlled case series design calculated the relative incidence (RI) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of acute cardiovascular events within one year after vaccination. Among 1647 participants (median age: 65 years, 38.43% female), the risk of events 29-365 days post-vaccination was 0.76 times the baseline level (RI: 0.76; 95% CI: 0.68-0.84). The protective effect was more pronounced in younger participants (P = 0.043) and those without cardiovascular history (P < 0.001), while acute respiratory infection (P = 0.986) and vaccination frequency (P = 0.272) had no impact. Influenza vaccines offer protection against acute cardiovascular events for at least one year, suggesting potential for cardiovascular disease prevention.

Chondrocyte ferroptosis induces the occurrence of osteoarthritis (OA). As a key gene of OA, C5a receptor 1 (C5AR1) is related to ferroptosis. Here, we investigated whether C5AR1 interferes with chondrocyte ferroptosis during OA occurrence. C5AR1 was downregulated in PA-treated chondrocytes. Overexpression of C5AR1 increased the cell viability and decreased ferroptosis in chondrocytes. Moreover, Tumor necrosis factor superfamily member 13B (TNFSF13B) was downregulated in PA-treated chondrocytes, and knockdown of TNFSF13B eliminated the inhibitory effect of C5AR1 on ferroptosis in chondrocytes. More importantly, the PI3K/Akt/GSK3ß/Nrf2/HO-1 pathway inhibitor LY294002 reversed the inhibition of C5AR1 or TNFSF13B on ferroptosis in chondrocytes. Finally, we found that C5AR1 alleviated joint tissue lesions and ferroptosis in rats and inhibited the progression of OA in the rat OA model constructed by anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT), which was reversed by interfering with TNFSF13B. This study shows that C5AR1 reduces the progression of OA by upregulating TNFSF13B to activate the PI3K/Akt/GSK3ß/Nrf2/HO-1 pathway and thereby inhibiting chondrocyte sensitivity to ferroptosis, indicating that C5AR1 may be a potential therapeutic target for ferroptosis-related diseases.

BACKGROUND: Owing to large amounts of synthetic pesticides being extensively and unreasonably used for crop protection, currently, resistance and negative impacts on human health and environment safety have appeared. Therefore, development of potential pesticide candidates is highly urgent. Herein, a series of ester derivatives of osthole were designed and synthesized as pesticidal agents. RESULTS: Six spatial configurations of 4'-(p-toluenoyloxy)osthole (4b), 4'-(m-fluorobenzoyloxy)osthole (4f), 4'-(p-fluorophenylacetyloxy)osthole (4m), 4'-(3'',4''-methylenedioxybenzoyloxy)osthole (4q), 4'-formyloxyosthole (4u) and 4'-acetyloxyosthole (4v) were determined by X-ray mono-crystal diffraction. Compounds 4b, 4'-(p-chlorobenzoyloxy)osthole (4g), 4'-(m-chlorobenzoyloxy)osthole (4h), 4'-(p-bromobenzoyloxy)osthole (4i) and 4'-(2''-chloropyridin-3''-ylcarbonyloxy)osthole (4p) showed higher insecticidal activity than toosendanin against Mythimna separata Walker; notably, compound 4b displayed 1.8 times insecticidal activity of the precursor osthole. Against Tetranychus cinnabarinus Boisduval, compounds 4g and 4h showed 3.3 and 2.6 times acaricidal activity of osthole, and good control effects in the glasshouse. Scanning electron microscopy assay demonstrated that compound 4g can damage the cuticle layer of T. cinnabarinus resulting in death. CONCLUSION: Compounds 4g and 4h can be further studied as lead pesticidal agents for the management of M. separata and T. cinnabarinus. These results will pave the way for application of osthole derivatives as agrochemicals. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

OBJECTIVE: In older populations admitted for diabetes, limited evidence suggests that influenza vaccination protects against hospitalization outcomes. METHODS: This study pooled 27,620 hospitalizations recorded for elderly diabetes patients from the Beijing Elderly Influenza Vaccination Information Registration Database (2013-2018) and the Beijing Urban Employee Basic Medical Insurance Database (2013-2018). Generalized linear regression and propensity score matching were conducted to estimate the effects of influenza vaccination on hospitalization outcomes (in-hospital all-cause mortality, readmission, length and costs of hospitalization), adjusting for measurable confounding factors. The low influenza period (May-July) was used as a reference period to adjust for unmeasured confounding factors during the peak influenza period (November-January). RESULTS: In propensity score matching, influenza vaccination in peak influenza period could reduce the risk of in-hospital death (OR: 0.47[0.22,0.97]) and readmission (OR: 0.70[0.60,0.81]), length of hospitalization (ß: -1.32[-1.47, -1.17]) and medical costs (GMR: 0.90[0.88,0.92]). After adjusting for unmeasured confounding factors, influenza vaccination was associated with 17% (ratio of ORs: 0.83 [0.69, 1.02]) lower risk of readmission and shorter length of hospitalization (difference in ß: -0.23 [-0.62, 0.16]). The subgroup analyses showed that male patients with older age and poorer health conditions could benefit more after influenza vaccination. CONCLUSION: Influenza vaccination could significantly improve hospitalization outcomes in elderly diabetic patients. This provides evidence supporting free influenza vaccination policies for vulnerable populations in low- and middle-income countries.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease in the world and poses a huge challenge to global healthcare. Early and accurate detection of amyloid-ß (1-42) (Aß42), a key biomarker of AD, is crucial for effective diagnosis and intervention of AD. Specific or overexpressed proteins on extracellular vesicles (EVs) describe a close correlation with the occurrence and development of diseases. EVs are a very promising non-invasive biomarker for the diagnosis of AD and other diseases. As a sensitive, simple and rapid analytical method, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) has been widely applied in the detection of EVs. Herein, we developed a dual labelling strategy for simultaneously detecting EV membrane proteins of Aß42 and CD63 based on FRET pair consisting of Au nanoclusters (AuNCs) and polydopamine nanospheres (PDANSs). The constructed nanoprobe, termed EVMPFAP assay, could specifically measure the Aß42 and CD63 on EVs with excellent sensitivity, high specificity and satisfactory accuracy. The limit of detection of EVMPFAP assay was 1.4 × 103 particles mL-1 and the linear range was from 104 to 108 particles mL-1. EVMPFAP assay was successfully used to analyze plasma EVs to distinguish AD and healthy mice. We expect that EVMPFAP assay can be routinely applied for early diagnosis and development-monitoring of AD, thus facilitating the fight against AD.

Ti3C2Tx MXene is an emerging two-dimensional material that has good potential in relative humidity (RH) measurement because of its unique layer structure, strong hydrophilic nature, and large specific surface area. Here, a high-performance RH sensor integrating Ti3C2TX MXene nanosheets and U-shaped tapered no-core fiber (UTNCF) is proposed. The sensing principle is based on mode interference. The change of ambient RH leads to the change of the refractive index (RI) of Ti3C2Tx MXene, which eventually leads to the shift of the transmission spectrum of the sensing probe. The average sensitivity is 1.11 nm/%RH in the RH range of 45% to 80%, and the response time is 25 ms. The proposed micro-nano fiber RH sensor has the advantages of high sensitivity, fast response, good repeatability, and stability. In addition, the proposed sensor has a broad application prospect in human respiratory monitoring, industrial and agricultural production, and environmental monitoring.

OBJECTIVE: Predictive care in patients undergoing ureteroscopic stone surgery has emerged as a promising approach. Thus, this study aims to enhance personalised nursing plans and reduce the risk of complications by conducting predictive analysis of possible risks early in the treatment and nursing process. METHODS: Clinical data were collected from 108 patients who underwent ureteroscopic stone surgery and were admitted to our hospital between January 2020 and January 2023. Patients were divided into a control group (conventional nursing, n = 53) and an observation group (predictive care, n = 55) based on the nursing method, and various clinical indicators were compared between the two groups of surgical patients. RESULTS: No significant difference in general data was found between the two groups (p > 0.05). Compared with the control group, the first time to exhaust gas (p < 0.05), the first time to get out of bed (p < 0.05), the time to exhaust stone (p < 0.05), the first time to defecate (p < 0.05) and the length of hospital stay (p < 0.05) in the observation group were shorter; 1 day after surgery, no significant differences in all dimensions of the general comfort questionnaire (GCQ) score were found; 2 days after surgery, the GCQ score in all dimensions of the observation group was significantly higher than that of the control group (p < 0.05). The incidence of postoperative complications in the observation group was significantly lower than that in the control group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Predictive nursing can effectively improve the patients with ureteral calculi, accelerate the process of postoperative recovery and reduce the occurrence of complications; Thus, this process is worthy of widespread clinical promotion.

BACKGROUND: Tertiary lymphoid structures (TLSs) exert a crucial role in the tumor microenvironment (TME), impacting tumor development, immune escape, and drug resistance. Nonetheless, the heterogeneity of TLSs in colorectal cancer (CRC) and their impact on prognosis and treatment response remain unclear. METHODS: The authors collected genome, transcriptome, clinicopathological information, and digital pathology images from multiple sources. An unsupervised clustering algorithm was implemented to determine diverse TLS patterns in CRC based on the expression levels of 39 TLS signature genes (TSGs). Comprehensive explorations of heterogeneity encompassing mutation landscape, TME, biological characteristics, response to immunotherapy, and drug resistance were conducted using multiomics data. TLSscore was then developed to quantitatively assess TLS patterns of individuals for further clinical applicability. RESULTS: Three distinct TLS patterns were identified in CRC. Cluster 1 exhibited upregulation of proliferation-related pathways, high metabolic activity, and intermediate prognosis, while Cluster 2 displayed activation of stromal and carcinogenic pathways and a worse prognosis. Both Cluster 1 and Cluster 2 may potentially benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy. Cluster 3, characterized by the activation of immune regulation and activation pathways, demonstrated a favorable prognosis and enhanced responsiveness to immunotherapy. The authors subsequently employed a regularization algorithm to construct the TLSscore based on nine core genes. Patients with lower TLSscore trended to prolonged prognosis and a more prominent presence of TLSs, which may benefit from immunotherapy. Conversely, those with higher TLSscore exhibited increased benefits from adjuvant chemotherapy. CONCLUSIONS: The authors identified distinct TLS patterns in CRC and characterized their heterogeneity through multiomics analyses. The TLSscore held promise for guiding clinical decision-making and further advancing the field of personalized medicine in CRC.

BACKGROUND: Annual influenza vaccination is crucially recommended for the elderly to maintain humoral immunity. Insufficient coverage requires us to understand the determinants of their influenza behaviors and how these patterns impact vaccination choices. METHODS: Data from 540 Beijing residents aged over 65 were collected through interviews, capturing vaccination history and sociodemographic details. Individual influenza vaccination records from 2016 to 2020 were obtained from China's Immunization Information Systems. A latent class model identified three vaccination patterns. Multinomial logistic regression assessed relative risk ratios (RRRs) for vaccination based on sociodemographic factors. Vaccination patterns were used to predict future vaccination likelihood. RESULTS: The analysis revealed three groups: sporadically vaccinated (63.33%), occasionally vaccinated (18.71%), and frequently vaccinated (17.96%). Factors associated with frequent vaccination included age over 70 (RRR = 2.81), lower income (RRR = 0.39), higher vaccine hesitancy (RRR = 3.10), multiple chronic conditions (RRR = 2.72), and rural residence (RRR = 2.48). The frequently vaccinated group was more likely to sustain regular vaccination habits in subsequent years compared to the occasionally vaccinated group. CONCLUSIONS: Only 17.96% of Beijing's older population exhibited a consistent influenza vaccination pattern. Older age, rural residency, and chronic diseases correlated with repeated influenza vaccination. Segmenting the population based on past vaccination behavior can aid in designing targeted interventions to improve vaccination rates.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the neutralizing antibody (NAb) levels against the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variants BF.7, BQ.1, BQ.1.1, XBB.1, and XBB.1.5 after vaccination and natural infection. METHODS: The NAbs against the different viral strains of 490 individuals with SARS-CoV-2 and 187 without SARS-CoV-2 in the Beijing COVID-19 outbreak during December 2022 to January 2023 were analyzed. RESULTS: In uninfected individuals, limited levels of NAbs were produced against the prototype and variant strains after two doses vaccine but significantly increased after three or four doses of the vaccine. The infected individuals had high NAbs levels against the BF.7, BQ.1, and BQ.1.1 variants and moderate NAbs levels against the XBB.1 and XBB.1.5 variants. The highest NAbs levels were observed after two inoculation doses. The third and fourth doses vaccine did not result in a significant increase the NAbs levels. After the last dose of vaccination, the NAbs levels peaked at 12 months for the prototype and BF.7 and between 6 to 12 months for the BQ.1, BQ.1.1, XBB.1, and XBB.1.5 variants. CONCLUSIONS: The immune response decreases as the virus mutates. If booster vaccination is considered necessary, it is suggested for at least 6 months after infection.

BACKGROUND: The study evaluated the protective effect of 13-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide conjugate vaccine (PCV13) against all-cause hospitalized pneumonia in children in Beijing. METHODS: Based on the vaccination record and inpatient medical record database of Beijing, children born in 2017 in Beijing, matched by age, gender, and district of the children with the ratio of 1:4, were selected as the vaccinated and unvaccinated groups according whether if vaccinated with PCV13. The incidence rate and 95 % confidence interval (95 %CI), vaccine effectiveness (VE) and direct medical costs of all-cause hospitalized pneumonia were calculated and compared within the same period of 12 months, 18 months, 24 months and 30 months after the birth of the child. RESULTS: The decreased incidence rates of all-cause hospitalized pneumonia were observed at the four points in the PCV13 vaccinated group compared to the unvaccinated group, which were significant at the points of 12 months (0.42 % vs. 0.72 %, P = 0.001), 18 months (0.90 % vs. 1.26 %, P = 0.002) and 24 months (1.37 % vs. 1.65 %, P = 0.046). The VE of PCV13 against all-cause hospitalized pneumonia within 12 months was the highest as 41.9 % (95 % CI 19.6 %, 58.0 %), followed by 29.3 % (95 % CI 11.4 %, 43.5 %) within 18 months, 17.1 % (95 % CI 0.3 %, 31.1 %) within 24 months and it almost disappeared within 30 months. The VE of 4-dose vaccination within 18 months and 24 months were 39.9 % (95 % CI 20.3 %, 54.7 %) and 27.2 % (95 % CI 8.6 %, 42.0 %), respectively. The median hospitalization cost of the children in the vaccinated group was higher at the four points but without significance. CONCLUSIONS: PCV13 had a certain protective effect on all-cause hospitalized pneumonia, and the booster immunization strategy had the best protective effect with great public health significance to enter the immunization program.

The toxic effects of tire wear particles (TWPs) on organisms have attracted widespread concerns over the past decade. However, the underlying toxicity mechanism of TWPs, especially aged TWPs to marine microalgae remains poorly understood. This study investigated the physiological and metabolic responses of Phaeodactylum tricornutum to different concentrations of TWPs (Experiment 1), virgin and differently aged TWPs (Experiment 2) as well as their leachates and leached particles (Experiment 3). Results demonstrated that TWPs promoted the growth of microalgae at low concentrations (0.6 and 3 mg L-1) and inhibited their growth at high concentrations (15 and 75 mg L-1). Moreover, aged TWPs induced more profound physiological effects on microalgae than virgin TWPs, including inhibiting microalgae growth, decreasing the content of Chla, promoting photosynthetic efficiency, and causing oxidative damage to algal cells. Untargeted metabolomics analysis confirmed that aged TWPs induced more pronounced metabolic changes than virgin TWPs. This study represented the first to demonstrate that both particulate- and leachate-induced toxicity of TWPs was increased after aging processes, which was confirmed by the changes in the surface morphology of TWPs and enhanced release of additives. Through the significant correlations between the additives and the microalgal metabolites, key additives responsible for the shift of microalgal metabolites were identified. These results broaden the understanding of the toxicity mechanism of aged TWPs to microalgae at the physiological and metabolic levels and appeal for considering the effects of long-term aging on TWP toxicity in risk assessment of TWPs.

Microplastics (MPs) and antibiotics, as two major types of emerging pollutants, inevitably coexist in the soil environment due to agricultural film residue, sewage irrigation and sludge application. However, the impact of MPs on antibiotic availability in soils with varying characteristics has not been extensively studied. Therefore, in this study, an interference experiment was conducted using three types of MPs (polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polypropylene (PP)) in red soil, paddy soil and cinnamon soil. The available antibiotics in soils were evaluated using diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT). Results showed that MPs had a significant impact on the amount of antibiotics adsorbed on soil solid (Cs) by providing additional binding sites or altering soil characteristics (e.g., pH and dissolved organic carbon). The most significant effects on Cs were observed in cinnamon soil, and the Cs values were dependent on concentration of MPs. The available antibiotics, as measured by DGT significantly decreased after the addition of MPs. This decrease was influenced by the soil characteristics. However, the concentration of antibiotics in soil solutions (Cd) was only slightly impacted by MPs. Therefore, the influence of MPs on the migration of antibiotics was reflected by their impact on the soil/water partition coefficient (Kd), while the resupply ability (R) from the soil solid phase was less influential. Moreover, the dosage of MPs had a significant effect on the availability of antibiotics in CS by promoting the adsorption of antibiotics on the solid phase, while in RS and PS, the soil properties played a dominate role in the changes in antibiotic availability after MP addition. These results indicate that the impact of MPs on available antibiotics mainly depends on soil properties. In addition, DGT measurement is more sensitive than soil solution to investigate the effects of coexisting pollutants on the behavior of antibiotics in soil.

To explore the use of nonfood plant-derived secondary metabolites for plant protection, a series of ester derivatives for controlling the major migratory agricultural pests were obtained by structural modification of andrographolide, a labdane diterpenoid isolated from Andrographis paniculata. Compound Id showed good insecticidal activity against the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda Smith. Compounds IIa (LC50: 0.382 mg/mL) and IIIc (LC50: 0.563 mg/mL), the acaricidal activities of which were, respectively, 13.1 and 8.9 times that of andrographolide (LC50: 4.996 mg/mL), exhibited strong acaricidal and control effects against Tetranychus cinnabarinus Boisduval. Against Aphis citricola Van der Goot, compounds IIIc and IVb displayed 3.9- and 3.7-fold pronounced aphicidal activity of andrographolide. Effects of compound Id on three protective enzymes (superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase) of S. frugiperda were also observed. The obvious differences of epidermal cuticle structures of mites treated with compound IIa were determined by scanning electron microscopy. Structure-activity relationships indicated that 14-ester derivatives of andrographolide showed potential insecticidal/acaricidal activities and can be further utilized as lead compounds.
