RESUMEN

To assess the effect of an allostatic modulator (AM) on stress blood indicators and meat quality traits, the feed of 80 non-castrated 18-20 month-old bulls was supplemented with 10 g/day of an AM for 30 days before slaughter. Another 80 bulls served as control animals. The AM was comprised of ascorbic acid, acetoxybenzoic acid and sodium and potassium chloride. Blood samples were taken at slaughter for analyses of hematocrit value, erythrocyte and leukocyte counts, and glucose, lactate and cortisol concentrations. Post-mortem measures of meat color and pH were made at 24h and color, shear force and cooking loss on meat from 20 animals at 28 days. The AM supplementation resulted in lower hematocrit value, erythrocyte count and glucose level (P<0.05), higher a* (P<0.0001) and b* (P<0.0001) at 24h and lower b* (P<0.05) at 28 days. Thus AM treatment improved some stress blood indicators and meat color and therefore merits further investigation.

RESUMEN

We have studied the subcommissural organ of two hydrocephalic brains, of 20 and 21 gestational weeks and of two normal brains, aged 19 and 23 gestational weeks. Both hydrocephalic cases presented a size reduction of the subcommissural organ compared to the normal cases; only in one case, there were also alterations of the morphological components of the subcommissural organ, suggesting different pathogenic relationships between hydrocephalus and dysplasia of the subcommissural organ.

RESUMEN

NADPH-d activity is a marker for neurones which synthesize nitric oxide (NO). In the present paper we study the NADPH-d activity in the human brain stem between 16 and 24 gestational weeks (GW). The adult distribution of NADPH-d containing neurones is established at 24 GW. Between 19 and 21 GW, neurones of the facial, hypoglossal and ambiguus nuclei show transient NADPH-d positivity. Therefore, in the human brain stem there are two chronological patterns of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (NOS) expression, one that appears during prenatal development and persists during the whole life, and another one, present only at a precise foetal moment. The transient NADPH-d activity in motor nuclei suggests that NO is involved in early regulatory processes of the human brain development.

RESUMEN

To repair large abdominal deficiencies, either congenital of acquired, occasionally serious problems show up where obtaining the ideal material is concerned, in those cases where autological tissue in the right size can not be found. In this sense materials like silver, steel and tantalium darning have been used, as well as many other synthetic tissues and non porous materials like silastic. During this same period, prosthesis of reabsorbing materials have been developed and used. We present a experimental work in which we compare four prosthesic materials as there are Marlex, Silastic, polyglycolic acid and lyodura, from the clinical, biological and histopathological point of view, distinguishing the ideal material in definite pathologies.

RESUMEN

Hepatic cirrhosis secondary to deficit of alpha-1 antitrypsin is an entity rarely observed among the adult population. We describe the clinical and histological characteristics of a patient with PiZZ phenotype, affected by an hepatic cirrhosis of this etiology, as well as the analytical and phenotypical study of his close relatives, all of which presented a type-Z mutation.

RESUMEN

Experimental study about suture materials of mean velocity absorption, in order to demonstrate their capacity to obtain a correct and sure arterial cicatrization by means of their tensile force, even though they disappear afterwards by absorption. 32 arterial anastomosis were carry out, and all of them resisted 300 mmHg of pressure, without to be broken.

RESUMEN

The evolution of Lupus Nephritis to end-stage chronic renal failure is a frequent event. We report the case of a 28 years old patient with diffuse proliferative lupus nephritis with crescents formation and rapid decline of renal function without response to steroids, immunosuppressors and plasmapheresis. After 10 weeks of continued hemodialysis, during which the patient received 30 mg of prednisone in alternate days, renal function recovered spontaneously, and after 1 year of follow-up plasma creatinine is maintained in 2.5 mg/dl.
