PURPOSE: Considering the prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D), osteoporosis should be considered a serious complication. However, an effective tool for the assessment of low bone mass mineral density (BMD) in T2D patients is not currently available. Therefore, the aim of our study was to establish a simple-to-use risk assessment tool by exploring risk factors for low BMD in T2D patients. METHODS: This study included 436 patients with a low BMD and 381 patients with a normal BMD. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate risk factors for low BMD in T2D patients. A nomogram was then developed from these results. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration plot, and goodness-of-fit test were used to validate the nomogram. The clinical utility of the nomogram was also assessed. RESULTS: Multivariate logistic regression indicated that age, sex, education, body mass index (BMI), fasting C-peptide, high-density cholesterol (HDL), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and type I collagen carboxy terminal peptide (S-CTX) were independent predictors for low BMD in T2D patients. The nomogram was developed from these variables using both the unadjusted area under the curve (AUC) and the bootstrap-corrected AUC (0.828). Calibration plots and the goodness-of-fit test demonstrated that the nomogram was well calibrated. CONCLUSIONS: The nomogram-illustrated model can be used by clinicians to easily predict the risk of low BMD in T2D patients. Our study also revealed that common factors are independent predictors of low BMD risk. Our results provide a new strategy for the prediction, investigation, and facilitation of low BMD in T2D patients.

BACKGROUND: Fibrosis results from excessive scar formation after tissue injury. Injured cells release alarmins such as interleukin 1 (IL-1) α and ß as primary mediators initiating tissue repair. However, how alarmins from different cell types differentially regulate fibrosis remains to be explored. METHODS: Here, we used tissue specific knockout strategy to illustrate a unique contribution of endothelial cell-derived IL-1α to lung and liver fibrosis. The two fibrotic animal model triggered by bleomycin and CCl4 were used to study the effects of endothelial paracrine/angiocrine IL-1α in fibrotic progression. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) were performed to explore the production of angiocrine IL-1α at both transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels in vitro. RESULTS: We found that endothelial paracrine/angiocrine IL-1α primarily promotes lung and liver fibrosis during the early phase of organ repair. By contrast, myeloid cell-specific ablation of IL-1α in mice resulted in little influence on fibrosis, suggesting the specific pro-fibrotic role of IL-1α from endothelial cell but not macrophage. In vitro study revealed a coordinated regulation of IL-1α production in human primary endothelial cells at both transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. Specifically, the transcription of IL-1α is regulated by RIPK1, and after caspase-8 (CASP8) cleaves the precursor form of IL-1α, its secretion is triggered by ion channel Pannexin 1 upon CASP8 cleavage. CONCLUSIONS: Endothelial cell-produced IL-1α plays a unique role in promoting organ fibrosis. Furthermore, the release of this angiocrine alarmin relies on a unique molecular mechanism involving RIPK1, CASP8, and ion channel Pannexin 1.

PURPOSE: This study aims to assess ultrashort-TE magnetization transfer (UTE-MT) imaging of collagen degradation using an in vitro model of rotator cuff tendinopathy. METHODS: Thirty-six supraspinatus tendon specimens were divided into three groups and treated with 600 U collagenase (Group 1), 150 U collagenase (Group 2), and phosphate buffer saline (Group 3). UTE-MT imaging was performed to assess changes in macromolecular fraction (MMF), macromolecule transverse relaxation time (T2m), water longitudinal relaxation rate constant (R1m), the magnetization exchange rate from the macromolecular to water pool (Rm0 w) and from water to the macromolecular pool (Rm0 m), and magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) at baseline and following digestion and their differences between groups. Biochemical and histological studies were conducted to determine the extent of collagen degradation. Correlation analyses were performed with MMF, T2m, R1m, Rm0 w, Rm0 m, and MTR, respectively. Univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses were performed to evaluate combinations of UTE-MT parameters to predict collagen degradation. RESULTS: MMF, T2m, R1m, Rm0 m, and MTR decreased after digestion. MMF (r = -0.842, p < 0.001), MTR (r = -0.78, p < 0.001), and Rm0 m (r = -0.662, p < 0.001) were strongly negatively correlated with collagen degradation. The linear regression model of differences in MMF and Rm0 m before and after digestion explained 68.9% of collagen degradation variation in the tendon. The model of postdigestion in MMF and T2m and the model of MTR explained 54.2% and 52.3% of collagen degradation variation, respectively. CONCLUSION: This study highlighted the potential of UTE-MT parameters for evaluation of supraspinatus tendinopathy.

Development of theranostic nanomedicines to tackle glioma remains to be challenging. Here, we present an advanced blood-brain barrier (BBB)-crossing nanovaccine based on cancer cell membrane-camouflaged poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PVCL) nanogels (NGs) incorporated with MnO2 and doxorubicin (DOX). We show that the disulfide bond-cross-linked redox-responsive PVCL NGs can be functionalized with dermorphin and imiquimod R837 through cell membrane functionalization. The formed functionalized PVCL NGs having a size of 220 nm are stable, can deplete glutathione, and responsively release both Mn2+ and DOX under the simulated tumor microenvironment to exert the chemo/chemodynamic therapy mediated by DOX and Mn2+, respectively. The combined therapy induces tumor immunogenic cell death to maturate dendritic cells (DCs) and activate tumor-killing T cells. Further, the nanovaccine composed of cancer cell membranes as tumor antigens, R837 as an adjuvant with abilities of DC maturation and macrophages M1 repolarization, and MnO2 with Mn2+-mediated stimulator of interferon gene activation of tumor cells can effectively act on both targets of tumor cells and immune cells. With the dermorphin-mediated BBB crossing, cell membrane-mediated homologous tumor targeting, and Mn2+-facilitated magnetic resonance (MR) imaging property, the designed NG-based theranostic nanovaccine enables MR imaging and combination chemo-, chemodynamic-, and imnune therapy of orthotopic glioma with a significantly decreased recurrence rate.

Although most people living with HIV (PLWH) receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) achieve continuous viral suppression, some show detectable HIV RNA as low-level viremia (LLV) (50-999 copies/mL). Drug resistance mutations (DRMs) in PLWH with LLV is of particular concern as which may lead to treatment failure. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of LLV and LLV-associated DRMs in PLWH in Zhengzhou City, China. Of 3616 ART-experienced PLWH in a long-term follow-up cohort from Jan 2022 to Aug 2023, 120 were identified as having LLV. Of these PLWH with LLV, we obtained partial pol and integrase sequences from 104 (70 from HIV-1 RNA and 34 from proviral DNA) individuals. DRMs were identified in 44 individuals. Subtyping analysis indicated that the top three subtypes were B (48.08%, 50/104), CRF07_BC (31.73%, 33/104), and CRF01_AE (15.38%, 16/104). The proportions of nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs), protease inhibitors (PIs), and integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs) associated DRMs were 23.83% (24/104), 35.58% (37/104), 5.77% (6/104), and 3.85% (4/104), respectively, which contributed to an overall prevalence of 42.31% (44/104). When analyzed by individual DRMs, the most common mutation(s) were V184 (18.27%, 19/104), followed by V179 (11.54%, 12/104), K103 (9.62%, 10/104), Y181 (9.62%, 10/104), M41 (7.69%, 8/104), and K65R (7.69%, 8/104). The prevalence of DRMs in ART-experienced PLWH with LLV is high in Zhengzhou City and continuous surveillance can facilitate early intervention and provision of effective treatment.

Background: IL-35 potently inhibits immune responses both in vivo and in vitro. However, the specific characteristics of IL-35-producing cells, including their developmental origin, cellular phenotype, and function, are unknown. Methods: By using a novel IL-35 reporter mouse (Ebi3-Dre-Thy1.1) and double transgenic fate-mapping reporter mice (35EbiT-Rosa26-rox-tdTomato reporter mice or Foxp3 fate-mapping system), we tracked and analyzed the differentiation and developmental trajectories of Tr35 cells in vivo. And then we investigated the therapeutic effects of OVA-specific Tr35 cells in an OVA-induced allergic airway disease model. Results: We identified a subset of cells, denoted Tr35 cells, that secrete IL-35 but do not express Foxp3. These cells have high expression of molecules associated with T-cell activation and can inhibit T-cell proliferation in vitro. Our analyses showed that Tr35 cells are a distinct subpopulation of cells that are independent of Tr1 cells. Tr35 cells exhibit a unique gene expression profile and tissue distribution. The presence of Thy1.1 (Ebi3) expression in Tr35 cells indicates their active secretion of IL-35. However, the proportion of ex-Tr35 cells (Thy1.1-) is significantly higher compared to Tr35 cells (Thy1.1+). This suggests that Tr35 cells possess the ability to regulate IL-35 expression rapidly in vivo. Tr35 cells downregulated the expression of the inflammatory cytokines IL-4, IFN-γ and IL-17A. However, once Tr35 cells lost IL-35 expression and became exTr35 cells, the expression of inflammatory cytokines was upregulated. Importantly, our findings indicate that Tr35 cells have therapeutic potential. In an OVA-induced allergic airway disease mouse model, Tr35 cell reinfusion significantly reduced airway hyperresponsiveness and histopathological airway and lung inflammation. Conclusions: We have identified a subset of Tregs, Tr35 cells, that are distinct from Tr1 cells. Tr35 cells can dynamically regulate the secretion of inflammatory cytokines by controlling IL-35 expression to regulate inflammatory immune responses.

MRD-HSCT is the first-line therapy for children with SAA, while it is not easy to find a compatible donor due to the Chinese one-child policy. IST has a high recurrence rate, a risk of clonal transformation. Thus, Haplo-HSCT, as a first-line treatment, has gradually attracted clinicians' attention. To evaluate the efficacy of Haplo-HSCT in children with SAA, we performed a retrospective study (2006.06-2021.01) of 210 patients with AA who received HSCT or IST in Beijing Children's Hospital. The OS and FFS rates were analyzed to evaluate the efficacy of Haplo-HSCT and IST. We found that from 2006 to 2021, 3- and 5-year cumulative survival rates were both 85.3% in the first-line Haplo group, 98.1% and 96.8% in the first-line IST group, both 85.7% in the ATG group (P = 0.866), both 100% in the ATG + TPO group (P = 0.016), and 99.1% and 97.2% in the ATG + eltrombopag group (P = 0.056). 3- and 5-year cumulative FFS rates were both 85.3% in the first-line Haplo-HSCT group and 67.5% and 66.2% in the first-line IST group (P = 0.033). Therefore, we believe that Haplo-HSCT can be a first-line treatment for paediatric SAA.

Four undescribed sesquiterpenes, atramacrolodes A-D (1-4), along with six known compounds 5-10 were isolated from the rhizome of Atractylodes macrocephala. Compound 3 possessed a new skeleton based on an unprecedented carton-carton connection. Their structures were determined by UV, IR, HRESIMS, NMR spectra, 13C NMR calculation with DP4+ analysis, and the comparison of experimental and calculated ECD spectra. Compounds 5 and 8 showed protective effects against paracetamol-induced liver cell injury.

Microplastics can function as carriers in the environment, absorbing various toxins and spreading to diverse ecosystems. Toxins accumulated in microplastics have the potential to be re-released, posing a threat. In this study, two typical plastics, namely polyethylene (PE) and polystyrene (PS), along with the degradable plastic poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), were subjected to a long-term ultraviolet alternating weathering experiment. The study investigated the variations in the weathering process and pollutant adsorption of microplastics of different particle sizes. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity of microplastics for various pollutants was assessed. The findings indicate that particle size significantly influences weathering, leading to variations in adsorption capacity. The weathered PE displays a higher adsorption capacity for azo dyes. Additionally, the adsorption capacity of PBAT for neutral red is double that of antibiotics. Importantly, the maximum adsorption capacity of PBAT for pollutants after aging is approximately 10 times greater than that of PE. Consequently, degradable plastics undergoing weathering in the natural environment may pose a higher ecological risk than traditional plastics.

Hemisphere functional lateralization is a prominent feature of the human brain. However, it is not known whether hemispheric lateralization features are altered in end-stage knee osteoarthritis (esKOA). In this study, we performed resting-state functional magnetic imaging on 46 esKOA patients and 31 healthy controls (HCs) and compared with the global and inter-hemisphere network to clarify the hemispheric functional network lateralization characteristics of patients. A correlation analysis was performed to explore the relationship between the inter-hemispheric network parameters and clinical features of patients. The node attributes were analyzed to explore the factors changing in the hemisphere network function lateralization in patients. We found that patients and HCs exhibited "small-world" brain network topology. Clustering coefficient increased in patients compared with that in HCs. The hemisphere difference in inter-hemispheric parameters including assortativity, global efficiency, local efficiency, clustering coefficients, small-worldness, and shortest path length. The pain course and intensity of esKOA were positively correlated with the right hemispheric lateralization in local efficiency, clustering coefficients, and the small-worldness, respectively. The significant alterations of several nodal properties were demonstrated within group in pain-cognition, pain-emotion, and pain regulation circuits. The abnormal lateralization inter-hemisphere network may be caused by the destruction of regional network properties.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: No previous study has investigated the association between dietary pattern and both general and abdominal obesity risk among adults in Nigeria. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between dietary patterns and the risk of obesity among adult age 18 and above in Ekiti State, Southwestern Nigeria. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGNS: A total of 1003 adults were included in this cross-sectional study (males = 558; females = 445). Body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip (WHR) were used to assess general and abdominal obesity respectively and they were categorized using WHO recommendation. Partial correlation analyses were performed to assess the associations of dietary patterns with BMI and WHR. Prevalence ratio between dietary pattern and both general and abdominal obesity were calculated using Robust Poisson Regression. RESULTS: The prevalence of general obesity among adults was 15.9%, (11.6% among men and 20.2% among women); abdominal obesity was 32.3% (28.9% among males and 44.5% among females). Four dietary patterns were identified; diversified traditional pattern; typical traditional pattern; milk and bread pattern and egg and fish pattern. Diversified traditional pattern was negatively associated with BMI (PR = 0.571, 95%CI: 0.360 ~ 0.905, p = 0.017), and typical traditional pattern was positively associated with BMI (PR = 1.561, 95% CI: 1.043 ~ 2.339, p = 0.031) and WHR in females (PR = 1.849, 95% CI: 1.256 ~ 2.721, p = 0.005). In comparison to those in the lowest quartile, adults with the highest quartile of the typical traditional pattern had a higher risk for abdominal obesity (PR = 1.849, 95%CI = 1.256 ~ 2.721, p = 0.020). CONCLUSION: This study reports an alarming increase in Obesity prevalence among Nigeria adults which is greatly influence by their lifestyle and eating pattern. We found out that a typical traditional food pattern was associated with a higher risk of both general and abdominal obesity, but a diverse traditional food pattern was associated to a reduced risk of general obesity.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) constitute a class of highly functional porous materials composed of lightweight elements interconnected by covalent bonds, characterized by structural order, high crystallinity, and large specific surface area. The integration of naturally occurring porphyrin molecules, renowned for their inherent rigidity and conjugate planarity, as building blocks in COFs has garnered significant attention. This strategic incorporation addresses the limitations associated with free-standing porphyrins, resulting in the creation of well-organized porous crystal structures with molecular-level directional arrangements. The unique optical, electrical, and biochemical properties inherent to porphyrin molecules endow these COFs with diversified applications, particularly in the realm of biology. This review comprehensively explores the synthesis and modulation strategies employed in the development of porphyrin-based COFs and delves into their multifaceted applications in biological contexts. A chronological depiction of the evolution from design to application is presented, accompanied by an analysis of the existing challenges. Furthermore, this review offers directional guidance for the structural design of porphyrin-based COFs and underscores their promising prospects in the field of biology.

OBJECTIVES: To meet the demand for personalized treatment, effective stratification of patients with metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma (mNPC) is essential. Hence, our study aimed to establish an M1 subdivision for prognostic prediction and treatment planning in patients with mNPC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 1239 patients with mNPC from three medical centers divided into the synchronous mNPC cohort (smNPC, n = 556) to establish an M1 stage subdivision and the metachronous mNPC cohort (mmNPC, n = 683) to validate this subdivision. The primary endpoint was overall survival. Univariate and multivariate Cox analyses identified covariates for the decision-tree model, proposing an M1 subdivision. Model performance was evaluated using time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curves, Harrell's concordance index, calibration plots, and decision curve analyses. RESULTS: The proposed M1 subdivisions were M1a (≤5 metastatic lesions), M1b (>5 metastatic lesions + absent liver metastases), and M1c (>5 metastatic lesions + existing liver metastases) with median OS of 34, 22, and 13 months, respectively (p < 0.001). This M1 subdivision demonstrated superior discrimination (C-index = 0.698; 3-year AUC = 0.707) and clinical utility over those of existing staging systems. Calibration curves exhibited satisfactory agreement between predictions and actual observations. Internal and mmNPC cohort validation confirmed the robustness. Survival benefits from local metastatic treatment were observed in M1a, while immunotherapy improved survival in patients with M1b and M1c disease. CONCLUSION: This novel M1 staging strategy provides a refined approach for prognostic prediction and treatment planning in patients with mNPC, emphasizing the potential benefits of local and immunotherapeutic interventions based on individualized risk stratification.

Shallow lakes, recognized as hotspots for nitrogen cycling, contribute to the emission of the potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O), but the current emission estimates for this gas have a high degree of uncertainty. However, the role of N2O-reducing bacteria (N2ORB) as N2O sinks and their contribution to N2O reduction in aquatic ecosystems in response to N2O dynamics have not been determined. Here, we investigated the N2O dynamics and microbial processes in the nitrogen cycle, which included both N2O production and consumption, in five shallow lakes spanning approximately 500 km. The investigated sites exhibited N2O oversaturation, with excess dissolved N2O concentrations (ΔN2O) ranging from 0.55 ± 0.61 to 53.17 ± 15.75 nM. Sediment-bound N2O (sN2O) was significantly positively correlated with the nitrate concentration in the overlying water (p < 0.05), suggesting that nitrate accumulation contributes to benthic N2O generation. High N2O consumption activity (RN2O) corresponded to low ΔN2O. In addition, a significant negative correlation was found between RN2O and nir/nosZ, showing that bacteria encoding nosZ contributed to N2O consumption in the benthic sediments. Redundancy analysis indicated that benthic functional genes effectively reflected the variations in RN2O and ∆N2O. qPCR analysis revealed that the clade II nosZ gene was more sensitive to ΔN2O than the clade I nosZ gene. Furthermore, four novel genera of potential nondenitrifying N2ORB were identified based on metagenome-assembled genome analysis. These genera, which are affiliated with clade II, lack genes responsible for N2O production. Collectively, benthic N2ORB, especially for clade II-type N2ORB, harnesses N2O consumption activity leading to low N2O emissions from shallow lakes. This study advances our knowledge of the role of benthic clade II-type N2ORB in regulating N2O emissions in shallow lakes.

INTRODUCTION: Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) presents a diagnostic enigma due to the inherent absence of lymphoid tissue in the central nervous system (CNS). The hypothesis posits that lymphocytes infiltrating the CNS during inflammatory responses could represent a cellular source for PCNSL, challenging traditional understandings of its etiology. PATIENT CONCERNS: In 2 illustrative cases, patients presented with neurological symptoms initially misdiagnosed as encephalitis and demyelinating disease, respectively. These diagnoses were established based on clinical assessments and initial biopsy findings. DIAGNOSIS: Subsequent biopsies, conducted months after the first signs of disease, confirmed the diagnosis of PCNSL in both patients. Identifying CD20-positive tumor cells was pivotal, indicating a B-cell lymphoma origin. INTERVENTIONS: Treatment strategies included high-dose methotrexate chemotherapy for both patients. In addition, the second patient underwent adjuvant whole-brain radiotherapy after the chemotherapy regimen. OUTCOMES: The therapeutic approach significantly reduced tumor size in both cases, with no evidence of recurrence observed during the follow-up period. This outcome underscores the potential efficacy of the chosen interventions. CONCLUSION: In response to inflammatory lesions, lymphocyte infiltration into the CNS may serve as a pivotal origin for tumor cells in PCNSL. These cases highlight the complexity of diagnosing CNS disorders and suggest that various forms of encephalitis in the early stages could influence the prognosis of lymphoma. This insight into the cellular origins and treatment responses of PCNSL contributes to a broader understanding of its pathophysiology and management.

Background: We aimed to observe the effect of extended care on improving motor function and activities of daily living of stroke-induced hemiplegic patients. Methods: Patients clinically diagnosed as stroke with hemiplegia and hospitalized in the Neurology Department at Tianjin Haibin People's Hospital, China from 2019 to 2020 were selected. One hundred twenty patients were enrolled and randomly divided into the intervention group (60 patients) and the control group (60 patients). The control group was given routine rehabilitation treatment and care. Based on routine rehabilitation treatment and care, the intervention group was given transitional care. After discharge, the patients were followed up. Barthel indexes (BIs) were collected to evaluate the activities of daily living of patients. The Fugl-Meyer Motor Function Assessment (FMA) was adopted to evaluate the patients' motor function. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in the total BI scores between the two groups of patients at the two time points before intervention and at discharge. The total scores of the intervention group were higher than those of the control group after 1 month and 3 months of discharge, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in total FMA scores between the two groups of patients before intervention, indicating comparability. After 3 months of discharge, the total FMA score of the intervention group patients was higher than that of the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion: Continuous care can effectively improve motor function and daily living ability of stroke patients with hemiplegia.

Soluble components secreted by Tfh cells are critical for the germinal center responses. In this study, we investigated whether Tfh cells could regulate the B-cell response by releasing small extracellular vesicles (sEVs). Our results showed that Tfh cells promote B-cell differentiation and antibody production through sEVs and that CD40L plays a crucial role in Tfh-sEVs function. In addition, increased Tfh-sEVs were found in mice with collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). Adoptive transfer of Tfh cells significantly exacerbated the severity of CIA; however, the effect of Tfh cells on exacerbating the CIA process was significantly diminished after inhibiting sEVs secretion. Moreover, the levels of plasma Tfh-like-sEVs and CD40L expression on Tfh-like-sEVs in RA patients were significantly higher than those in healthy subjects. In summary, Tfh cell-derived sEVs can enhance the B-cell response, and exacerbate the procession of autoimmune arthritis.

Suffering from the susceptibility to decomposition, the potential electrochemical application of FeOCl has greatly been hindered. The rational design of the soft-hard material interface can effectively address the challenge of stress concentration and thus decomposition that may occur in the electrodes during charging and discharging. Herein, interlayer structure manipulation of FeOCl/MXene using soft-hard interface design method were conducted for electrochemical dechlorination. FeOCl was encapsulated in Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets by electrostatic self-assembly layer by layer to form a soft-hard mechanical hierarchical structure, in which Ti3C2Tx was used as flexible buffer layers to relieve the huge volume change of FeOCl during Cl- intercalation/deintercalation and constructed a conductive network for fast charge transfer. The CDI dechlorination system of FeOCl/Ti3C2Tx delivered outstanding Cl- adsorption capacity (158.47 ± 6.98 mg g-1), rate (6.07 ± 0.35 mg g-1 min-1), and stability (over 94.49% in 30 cycles), and achieved considerable energy recovery (21.14 ± 0.25%). The superior dechlorination performance was proved to originate from the Fe2+/Fe3+ topochemical transformation and the deformation constraint effect of Ti3C2Tx on FeOCl. Our interfacial design strategy enables a hard-to-soft integration capacity, which can serve as a universal technology for solving the translational problem of electrode volume expansion.

Flavonoids are widely distributed in nature and have a variety of beneficial biological effects, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-obesity effects. All of these are related to gut microbiota, and flavonoids also serve as a bridge between the host and gut microbiota. Flavonoids are commonly used to modify the composition of the gut microbiota by promoting or inhibiting specific microbial species within the gut, as well as modifying their metabolites. In turn, the gut microbiota extensively metabolizes flavonoids. Hence, this reciprocal relationship between flavonoids and the gut microbiota may play a crucial role in maintaining the balance and functionality of the metabolism system. In this review, we mainly highlighted the biological effects of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiobesity, and discussed the interaction between flavonoids, gut microbiota and lipid metabolism, and elaborated the potential mechanisms on host lipid metabolism.
