RESUMEN

In vitro embryo production is one of the main reproductive techniques used in dairy Gyr cattle. In addition, linear type measures are well characterized and have been used in dairy Gyr breed selection for the last 4 decades. The estimation of genetic parameters for the number of aspirated oocytes and in vitro-produced embryos associated with the linear type measures would support genetic progress for animal breeding programs toward embryo production. This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters for aspirated oocytes, embryo in vitro production, and linear type traits, exploring the association between them. The repeatability model was applied to 14,251 ovum pick-up events from 1,916 Gyr donors. A subset of 604 donors from the same group had their body measurements taken. Single- and 2-trait analyses were carried out using the BLUPF90 family programs. Heritability estimates of 0.38, 0.34, and 0.20 were obtained for total oocytes, viable oocytes, and embryos, respectively,-and the heritability of the linear type traits ranged from 0.22 to 0.40. High genetic correlations between total oocytes and viable oocytes (0.99), and between oocytes (total and viable) and embryos (0.83) were obtained. Low to high genetic (-0.07 to 0.92) and phenotypic (0.32 to 0.86) correlations were obtained between the linear type traits. Moreover, low phenotypic correlations (0.01 to 0.13) were observed for oocytes (total and viable) and embryos with the linear type traits, whereas low to moderate genetic correlations (0.07 to 0.42) were observed between the same traits, especially for ilium width (0.42), rump area (0.38), and hip height (0.33). Thus, selection for in vitro production is achievable in Gyr dairy cattle, and superior genetic progress is associated with the selection of oocytes (total and viable). Furthermore, the moderate genetic association between oocytes and embryos with linear type traits, especially ilium width suggests that progress on in vitro embryo production may be achieved by accessing these measurements.

RESUMEN

Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL) is a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). We present a case of a 60-year-old female who attended the emergency department (ED) with fatigue, recurrent fever, weight loss, and adenopathy for six months. Laboratory findings showed anemia, lymphocytosis, eosinophilia, thrombocytosis, cholestasis, hypoproteinemia, and hypoalbuminemia. Abdominopelvic computed tomography (CT) revealed multiple adenopathies. A lymph node biopsy yielded inconclusive results in the outpatient clinic. Later, during admission, the patient underwent a positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT), revealing a cervical adenopathy cluster that was excised en bloc. Histology confirmed the diagnosis of AITL. The medical team initiated chemotherapy but opted for exclusive symptomatic treatment due to disease progression. The patient died six months after diagnosis. The fluctuating and nonspecific presentation of AITL can hinder and delay definitive diagnosis, therefore impacting treatment and prognosis.

RESUMEN

Intimate partner violence is a public health problem with significant consequences at different levels. Over the years, the literature has shown that most violence is not unidirectional and perpetrated by men against women but rather bidirectional, in which both couple elements may be victims, perpetrators, or both. In this systematic literature review, we aimed to systematize the empirical knowledge to assess the prevalence of bidirectional violence, the most reported types of violence, and the influence of sex and sexual orientation on this phenomenon. The search for this systematic review was conducted in four databases, and we included studies that showed the prevalence of bidirectional violence in samples aged over 18 years, in articles written in English or Portuguese, and published between 2012 and 2022. In the qualitative synthesis, 42 empirical studies were included. The results showed that bidirectional violence is the most common pattern of violence, with psychological violence being the most reported type of bidirectional violence; men and women reported bidirectional violence at similar rates, and homosexual couples reported higher percentages of bidirectional violence than heterosexual couples. These results contradict the patriarchalist view of violence that assigns the exclusivity role of the victim to women and of the perpetrator to men, demonstrating that violence occurs regardless of sex or sexual orientation. The practical implications and future directions at the level of public policies to give visibility to the phenomenon will be duly discussed.

RESUMEN

Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) concentration and number of recovered oocytes (ROOC) are phenotypic parameters associated with in vitro embryo production (IVEP). More recently, anogenital distance (AGD) has been proposed as a proxy for fertility in dairy cattle that is easy to collect at a low cost. The aim of this study was to characterize the AGD and its phenotypic and genetic associations with AMH and IVEP in Bos indicus Gyr dairy cattle. The hypothesis was that the number of ROOC, in vitro-produced embryos, and AMH concentration would increase as the AGD decreases. From July to December 2021, a single morphometrical measurement of AGD was collected in 552 donors from 6 herds in Brazil. A subset of donors had AMH assayed on the same day. Only ovum pick-up events that occurred up to 12 mo preceding and 7 mo succeeding the AGD measurement were used to assess the association between AGD, AMH, and IVEP. Thus, 472 donors (1,551 ovum pick-up events and 140 donors with AMH) were considered in the analysis. A raw average was calculated for each individual donor's ROOC, viable oocytes, total produced embryos, viability rate, and embryo rate (defined as total produced embryos/viable oocytes). Comparisons were conducted within the age categories of 3 to <6 yr or 6 to <10 yr. Phenotypic associations were performed in SAS software (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC). Genetic correlations were estimated using the BLUPF90 family of programs. The AGD (128.7 mm ± 14; mean ± standard deviation) had a normal distribution and was highly variable (83 to 172 mm) among the Gyr population. Our experimental hypothesis was partially supported by a phenotypic association of a greater number of total produced embryos (R2 = 0.023) as AGD decreased. Our results failed to support an increase in AMH concentration along with a decrease in AGD. In addition, positive and low genetic correlations were observed between AGD and viable oocytes (r = 0.08), and embryo rate (r = 0.20). A greater number of viable oocytes and embryos were observed in donors in the high compared with intermediate and low ROOC categories within both age categories. The age interval of 3 to <6 yr showed a greater number of recovered and viable oocytes for the high AMH compared with the low category, but no differences were observed among the AGD categories. In summary, for the Gyr breed, AGD was phenotypically inversely associated with a quantity-related parameter, such as the total number of produced embryos. In contrast, AGD showed a low genetic correlation with qualitative-related outcomes such as viable oocytes and embryo rate. Further studies should be performed to validate these retrospective analyses and to better understand the association between AGD and IVEP.

RESUMEN

Primary hepatic lymphoma (PHL) is extremely rare, accounting for less than 1% of all lymphomas, and is limited to the liver without extrahepatic involvement. A 30-year-old male was admitted in the Emergency Department complaining of weakness, fever, night sweats, significant weight loss, discrete ring alopecia, hepatomegaly, right axillary adenopathy and oedema of both legs. Laboratory evaluation showed normocytic normochromic anaemia, thrombocytosis, hyperbilirubinemia, cholestasis and increased international normalised ratio (INR). A computed tomography (CT) scan found an enlarged liver with a heterogeneous structure and moderate ascites. After admission in our ward further investigation revealed increased sedimentation velocity, ferritin and serum lactate dehydrogenase. A hepatic biopsy was performed which confirmed the diagnosis as a nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma (NLPHL). The patient was transferred to a haematological ward and underwent chemotherapy with six cycles of R-CHOP. He is in complete remission after a year and half since the beginning of treatment. NLPHL, a very rare lymphoma, is more common in men between the third and fifth decades of life. Usually, the symptoms are very unspecific; a few patients have B symptoms at admission. This kind of presentation is also common in infectious, metabolic and autoimmune diseases, which were excluded in this case. Due to technical issues the final diagnosis was only possible due to the liver biopsy. Treatment with standard Hodgkin lymphoma protocols leads to complete remission in more that 95% of patients with NLPHL. LEARNING POINTS: Differential diagnosis of fever, especially in young patients, is very complex and complete investigation takes time, which can delay the diagnosis of malignancies such as primary hepatic lymphoma (PHL).PHL is very rare, and overlapping symptoms with other liver diseases can make the diagnosis very challenging. When the suspicion of PHL is very high, only the hepatic biopsy can lead to the correct diagnosis because the disease has no extrahepatic involvement.

RESUMEN

We aimed to evaluate the effect of supplemental CP on the nutritional characteristics and performance of Holstein × Gyr crossbreed heifers grazing intensively-managed Brachiaria decumbens throughout the year. Thirty-eight heifers with average initial body weight of 172.5 ± 11.15 kg (mean ± SE) and 8.2 ± 0.54 mo of age were randomly assigned to four treatments: three protein supplements (SUP) composed of soybean meal and ground corn fed at 5g/kg of BW, plus a control group (CON). The supplements had 12, 24 and 36% of CP for treatments S12 (n = 9), S24 (n = 10), and S36 (n = 9), respectively. The experiment latest one year, subdivided into four seasons: rainy, dry, rainy-dry transition (RDT), and dry-rainy transition (DRT). Feces and pasture samples were collected for 4 days in each season, using chromium oxide, titanium dioxide, and indigestible neutral detergent fiber (NDF) to estimate fecal excretion, supplement, and pasture intake, respectively. The data were analyzed using PROC GLIMMIXED of the SAS with repeated measures. No effects of supplementation were detected on pasture and NDF intake. However, SUP animals had a greater intake of DM, metabolizable energy, and metabolizable protein. A positive linear response on metabolizable protein intake was observed among SUP animals. We observed an interaction between treatment and season for all digestibility variables, with a positive linear response in CP digestibility among SUP animals during all seasons. For neutral detergent fiber (NDF) digestibility, we observed a positive linear response in RDT and rainy seasons and a quadratic response during the dry season. Furthermore, SUP animals had greater average daily gain (ADG) than non-supplemented animals, and among SUP animals, there was a quadratic response to ADG, with the greatest gain observed in S24. We observed greater nitrogen retention coefficient in SUP animals than in non-supplemented animals and a positive linear effect among SUP animals. Supplemental CP did not affect microbial protein production and efficiency. We observed an interaction between treatment and season for blood glucose, with SUP animals having greater glucose concentration in all seasons than non-supplemented animals. Additionally, we observed a quadratic response among SUP animals only during RDT and dry season, with the greatest glucose concentration in S24. SUP animals had greater blood concentrations of urea and IGF-1. In conclusion, SUP animals had greater intake, digestibility, and performance than non-supplemented animals, with the 24% CP supplement demonstrating the best metabolic responses and performance.

RESUMEN

Some victims of interpersonal violence do not acknowledge or label their experience as criminal. This study aims to explore men's experiences as victims of intimate partner violence and identify the key elements that contribute to their (un)acknowledgment and needs. We interviewed 10 Portuguese male victims in heterosexual relationships who requested formal help. A thematic analysis was performed using NVivo 11. Social gender discourses and expectations prevented men from acknowledging their intimate victimization and created barriers to seeking help. Participants struggled to achieve the social status of the victim and to gain access to intervention measures. These findings reflect the invisibility and insufficient social awareness of intimate partner violence against men and enhance our understanding of the need of those men.

RESUMEN

This study investigated the effects of age and FSH treatment on the ovarian response, follicular fluid (FF) biochemical composition, nuclear maturation, and molecular profile of cumulus-oocytes complexes (COCs) recovered from prepubertal gilts. Thirty-five prepubertal gilts were separated according to age [140 (n = 20) or 160 (n = 15) days], and within each age, the gilts were allotted to receive either 100 mg of FSH [treated; G140+FSH (n = 10) and G160+FSH (n = 7)] or saline solution [control; G140+control (n = 10) and G160+control (n = 8)]. Thus, four experimental groups were included in this study. In the FSH-treated gilts, the percentage of medium follicles increased (P < 0.0001) in the same proportion with which the percentage of small follicles decreased (P < 0.0001). In addition, the glucose concentration in the FF obtained from medium follicles increased (P < 0.05), while that of triglycerides decreased (P < 0.05) in the FSH-treated gilts. The FSH stimulation also improved (P < 0.05) the number of grade I COCs obtained from medium follicles and the meiotic maturation and BCB + rates. FSH treatment only upregulated (P < 0.05) HMGCR expression in immature COCs from prepubertal gilts. The metaphase II and BCB + rates, FF glucose and plasma IGF-1 levels were greater (P < 0.05) in prepubertal gilts at 160 than at 140 days of age. Age had no effect (P > 0.05) on the transcript abundance of the target genes in immature COCs. Hence, oocytes obtained from 140-day-old prepubertal gilts appeared less meiotically competent than those of 160-day-old prepubertal gilts. Our study suggests a possible strategy of using FSH treatment to improve oocyte quantity, quality, and nuclear maturation in 140 and 160-day-old prepubertal gilts.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a group of rare inherited metabolic diseases caused by the deficiency of enzymes required to degrade glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in the lysosome with progressive and multiorgan involvement. Due to its progressive nature, a large number of patients need surgical intervention, which is associated with higher perioperative morbidity. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 29 medical records regarding the peri and post-operative anaesthetic care of 10 children with mucopolysaccharidoses at a tertiary hospital in Northern Portugal between 2010 and 2021. A comprehensive review of the literature is also included. RESULTS: Twenty-nine medical records of 10 patients with a mean age of 8.8 years old were included. At the time of the procedure, 65.5% of patients were under enzymatic replacement and all had some type of organ involvement. Each patient was subjected to 2.9 elective procedures on average, with the lowest age of two years at the first procedure. Regarding surgical specialties, 41.4% of interventions were orthopaedic. Balanced anaesthesia with inhalational induction and spontaneous breathing was performed in 48.3% of cases, with no reports of difficult bag-mask ventilation. Endotracheal intubation in the operating room was performed in nine cases. Direct laryngoscopy with a Macintosh blade was the first option in seven patients. Success was achieved only in three cases. Failed intubation was managed with a paediatric C-MAC® video laryngoscope (VLG; one case) and fiberoptic bronchoscopy (two cases). Video laryngoscopy and fibroscopy were the first choices in one case each. Post-operative complications were registered in 10 procedures (34.5%), with airway and pulmonary complications in 17.2%. All complications occurred in different patients except for post-operative nausea and vomiting, which were registered in three cases, two of them in the same patient at different orthopaedic surgical interventions. DISCUSSION: The high percentage of direct laryngoscopy could be related to the greater number of interventions performed in a period when indirect methods were not so widely used in anaesthetic practice, and the high rate of failure highlights the importance of transitioning to indirect techniques upon the first attempt. The high percentage of patients under enzymatic treatment can explain the low number of adverse airway events. High-quality evidence regarding MPS is lacking in the literature. Prospective studies would improve the perioperative care of this particular subset of patients. CONCLUSION:  Patients with MPS represent a huge challenge for the anaesthesiologist, mainly in view of airway management. The integration of all available data in clinical practice is essential to optimize perioperative management of mucopolysaccharidoses patients' management and improve clinical outcomes.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to investigate the difference between Holstein and Holstein × Gyr breeds on feeding behavior and performance of heifers grazing temperate pasture. The experiment was carried out in 89 days, split into 14 days of adaptation, and 3 periods of 25 days. Two treatments were used: Holstein (HOL; n = 7) and Holstein × Gyr (HG; n = 7). Heifers grazed a consortium of ryegrass and bristle oats and were supplemented individually daily with cornmeal at 0.33% of body weight plus 5 kg/day of corn silage. For 3 consecutive days, feeding behavior was observed for individual animals from direct visual observation recording at 10-min intervals. The digestibility trial was performed on day (d) 16 to d24 of each period. Body measurements and weight were taken at d0 and at d23, 24, and 25 of each period. Grazing duration, grazing frequency, and bite rate were greater for HOL than those for HG. Rumination characteristics, intake, digestibility, and body measurements were not affected by breed. Breeds had differences in grazing characteristics, but they did not influence performance or intake parameters. Therefore, HOL and HG heifers managed under temperate pasture in tropical countries have similar performances.

RESUMEN

A model to estimate the damage caused by white mold to soybean yield from experimental field data gathered during the summer season of 2009-10 was generated. Six soybean cultivars were grown on six sites of the Savana (Cerrados) region, resulting in a total of nine separate experiments. The gradient of disease intensity (plant stem incidence) and yield was generated through the application of different fungicides and rates three times over the course of the season. The disease incidence in plant stems was evaluated at the R1, R5.2 and R5.5 growing stages. Manual harvest at the physiological ripening stage was followed by grain drying, threshing, and cleaning. Finally, grain yield was estimated in kg/ha, and regression analysis was performed. Nine linear equations representing the damage function were generated. The mean damage function was y = - 6.7 x + 1,000, where y represents grain yield normalized to 1,000 kg/haand x represents WM incidence in plants. To appraise the damage caused by various disease intensities, these models should first be validated. Damage coefficients may be used to determine the level of economic damage.

Evaluations of replacement heifers in intensively managed grazing systems in tropical conditions are warranted. Thus, we aimed to evaluate performance, muscle and mammary gland development, oocyte quality, and in vitro production of embryos of crossbred heifers grazing an intensively managed pasture and supplemented with high or low protein concentrates. Eighteen pubertal crossbred heifers (Holstein x Gyr) with an initial weight of 350 ± 8.0 kg were used in a 60-day trial. Two supplement types, 12% crude protein (CP) (S12CP) or 24% CP (S24CP), and a control treatment (mineral mixture, CON) were randomly distributed to the heifers. Throughout the experiment, four digestibility trials were performed over four consecutive days. Four ovarium pick-ups were performed to evaluate oocyte quality and in vitro embryo production. Lastly, ultrasounds of carcasses and mammary glands were performed. The intakes of dry matter (DM), digestible energy (DE), and CP were greater for supplemented (SUP) compared with CON heifers. The SUP heifers had a greater average daily gain (ADG) (645 versus 390 g/d) and rib eye area (58.78 versus 53.32 cm2) than the CON heifers. Oocyte recovery, quality, and follicle features were not affected by supplementation strategy. However, the cleavage rate (47.17% versus 30.31%) and blastocyst rate (27.91% versus 10.12%) were negatively affected by supplementation. The S12CP presented a blastocyst rate much lower than the S24CP (3.02% versus 17.23%). Carcass ultrasonography indicated a trend for greater rib eye area for S24CP and mammary ultrasonography indicated no effects of supplementation on mammary gland development. In summary, supplementation seems to be an appropriate strategy for satisfactory performance, with greater muscle deposition and no negative impacts on mammary gland development. However, in vitro embryo production was impaired when the animals received the supplementation with 12% CP.

RESUMEN

There has been a recent increase in the amount of research on male victims of female-perpetrated partner violence (PV) but research needs to be conducted to understand how the patterns of abuse persist in these relationships. In the current study, the experiences of 59 male PV victims in the USA, recruited through online advertisements in professional networks and websites (e.g., agencies that specialize in male victims of PV), were explored through a thematic analysis. Analyses suggested that the help seeking process of male PV victims is complex and heterogeneous and can often lead to further negative consequences due to various structural, cultural, social, and organizational factors. The findings also highlight the potential societal issues that male victims perceived as contributing to male victimization and lack of available resources for them. The results are discussed in terms of its implications for agencies, service providers, and general societal attitudes that are relevant to raising awareness about this phenomenon.

RESUMEN

Introduction: The risk behaviours, safety and violence of young people have been a major concern for societies. Health promotion focused on the importance of a safe environment and the implications that come from incorrect behaviours at this stage of life in which building autonomy is critical. Objectives: To identify individual health measures adopted by adolescents/youngsters in this case and violence situations to which they are commonly exposed; to determine the level of the risk behaviour; to explore the connections between risk behaviours, school year, and gender. Method: A quantitative, correlational and transversal study was conducted. A selfadministered questionnaire it was deliver to participants. The sample comprised 1614 young people, of the municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão, and attending the academic year of 2013/2014. Results: The average age of respondents was 17 years old and the majority were female, attended the secondary school and perceived their family as highly functional. The use of a protection helmet was more frequent when riding a motorcycle than riding a bicycle. The majority of participants reported the regular use of the seatbelt and did not drive nor accompanied a person driving under the influence of alcohol. Most of the respondents have not been involved in situations of violence. The majority showed low levels of risk behaviours. Conclusion: These study participants reported a positive image of the risk beha-viours. Notwithstanding, young people would still highly benefit from the development of multidisciplinary and innovative interventions leading to the acquisition of a healthy and responsible lifestyle

RESUMEN

AIM: The aim of the present study was to assess the association of sex, age, group of teeth, and type of accident (exposure) with dental fractures (outcome: enamel-dentine fracture without [EDF] or with pulp exposure [EDPF] and root fracture RF]). METHODS: In total, 1046 patients were selected. Logistic binary regression was used. RESULTS: The findings showed that EDF has less change of affecting individuals ≤9 years of age than ≥40 years of age (odds ratio [OR]: 0.58, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.35-0.95). Violence (OR: 3.07, 95% CI: 1.77-5.31), traffic accidents (OR: 1.50, 95% CI: 1.05-2.13), and sporting accidents (OR: 1.70, 95% CI: 1.19-2.44)] were associated with EDF. Regarding EDPF, the mandibular lateral incisors had a 10 times higher chance of being injured than canines and posterior teeth (OR: 10.43, 95% CI: 1.74-62.4). Those aged ≤9 years (OR: 0.21, 95% CI: 0.07-0.58) and 10-19 years (OR: 0.38, 95% CI: 0.17-0.88) had a significantly lower chance of being affected by RF. CONCLUSION: EDF and RF are associated with individuals ≥40 years of age; violence and traffic and sporting accidents are also associated with EDF, and mandibular incisors have a greater chance of being affected by EDPF.

RESUMEN

International research has established that men can be victims of intimate partner violence (IPV). In Portugal, this phenomenon has not yet received scientific or social attention, although since the 1990s, IPV has been acknowledged as a notable problem. An online cross-sectional study was conducted with 89 heterosexual men who, after completing the Revised Conflict Tactics Scales, identified themselves as victims of IPV. We examined the prevalence of IPV, its context, its perceived impact, men's reactions after an episode of violence, men's perceived motives for the partner's aggressive behavior, and reasons that prevented men from leaving the abusive relationship. The results revealed many similarities to the findings in the literature on female victims and are discussed in terms of their practical implications. Increased knowledge of this underreported phenomenon is vital to the development of suitable policies and support services.

RESUMEN

The history and iconography of Swiss stained glass dating between the 16th and 18th centuries are well studied. However, the chemical and morphological characteristics of the glass and glass paints, particularly the nature of the raw materials, the provenance of the glass, and the technology used to produce it are less well understood. In this paper, we studied two sets of samples from stained-glass panels attributed to Switzerland, which date from the 16th to 17th centuries: the first set comes from Pena National Palace collection, the second from Vitrocentre Romont. The aims were to identify the materials used in the production of the glass, to find out more about their production origin and to characterize the glass paints. Both glass and the glass paints were analysed by particle-induced X-ray emission; the paints were additionally analysed by scanning electron microscopy-electron-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The results show that the glass from both sets was probably produced in the same region and that wood ash was used as a fluxing agent. Different recipes have been used to make the blue enamels. However, the cobalt ore used as a coloring agent in all of the blue enamels came from the mining district in Schneeberg, Germany.

RESUMEN

We aimed to quantify the productive and metabolic responses, and digestive changes in dairy cows fed various concentrations of soybean oil (SBO) in high-concentrate, sugarcane-based diets. Eight rumen-cannulated multiparous Holstein cows in mid lactation (574 ± 19.1 kg of body weight and 122 ± 6.9 d in milk), averaging 22.5 ± 1.22 kg/d of milk were assigned to replicated 4 × 4 Latin squares. The experimental period lasted 21 d as follows: 14 d for adaptation, followed by a sampling period from d 15 to 21. The diets were formulated with increasing concentrations of SBO [% of dry matter (DM)]: control (0%), low (LSBO; 1.57%), medium (MSBO; 4.43%), and high (HSBO; 7.34%). Dry matter intake decreased quadratically in response to SBO addition. The greatest decrease in DM intake was observed in MSBO and HSBO diets. Both milk and energy-corrected milk yield were quadratically affected by the SBO inclusion, with a slight decrease up to MSBO and substantial decrease in the HSBO diet. The milk fat concentration linearly decreased from 3.78% in the control to 3.50% in the HSBO diet. The potentially digestible neutral detergent fiber digestibility in the rumen decreased from 55.7% in the control to 35.2% in the HSBO diet. The fractional rate of digestion of potentially digestible neutral detergent fiber in the rumen decreased linearly from 3.13 to 1.39%/h from the control to HSBO diet. The fractional rate of indigestible neutral detergent fiber passage in the rumen was quadratically affected, with the lowest value (2.25%/h) for the HSBO diet. Rumen pH increased from 6.42 to 6.67, and ammonia nitrogen decreased from 28.1 to 21.4 mg/dL, in the control and HSBO diets, respectively. Rumen volatile fatty acids decreased quadratically, with the greatest decrease observed in MSBO and HSBO diets. Serum concentrations of glucose, fatty acids, and ß-hydroxybutyrate were unaffected by SBO inclusion. However, serum concentrations of total cholesterol and high- and low-density lipoproteins linearly increased with increasing concentrations of SBO in the diet. Inclusion of SBO at concentrations from 4.43 to 7.34% of the diet DM decreased DM intake, energy-corrected milk production, fiber digestibility, and rumen fermentation and was thus not recommended. Soybean oil supplementation at 1.57% of the diet DM proved to be a safe concentration for dairy cows fed high-concentrate diets with sugarcane as the sole forage.

RESUMEN

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a well-studied group of noncoding RNAs that control gene expression by interacting mainly with messenger RNA. It is known that miRNAs and their biogenesis regulatory machineries have crucial roles in multiple cell processes; thus, alterations in these genes often lead to disease, such as cancer. Disruption of these genes can occur through epigenetic and genetic alterations, resulting in aberrant expression of miRNAs and subsequently of their target genes. This review focuses on the disruption of miRNAs and their key regulatory machineries by genetic alterations, with emphasis on mutations and epigenetic changes in cancer and other diseases.
