RESUMEN

Public gyms and fitness clubs promote active lifestyles. At the same time, numerous nutritional errors and the phenomenon of incorrect supplementation are being observed among the given study group. Behavior can lead to malaise, injury, or lack of progression. One of the most serious mistakes is the incorrect level of protein in the diet. The aim of the study is to assess the quantity and quality of protein consumed by men undertaking recreational strength training in Szczecin. The study involved 35 men aged 18-35, practicing amateur strength training, from Szczecin (Poland). The author's questionnaire collected information on supplementation, physical activity, and subjective assessment of nutritional knowledge. The obtained test results were subjected to statistical analysis performed in the Statistica12 program. On average, respondents consumed 1.8 g of protein/kg, with the highest recorded conversion rate of 3.7 g of protein/kg of body weight, and the lowest of 0.9 g/kg of body weight. Total protein consumption ranged from 70.2 to 295.7 g, and the average value was 147.8 g (22%), which differs from the study group, that is, 129-133 g, which gives 14% energy proteins. It was found that the protein supplementation, on average, provided 31% of the total protein intake of the study group. The results show inappropriate dietary behavior regarding food supplementation among the examined group. Further education on the nutritional value of the food and a healthy and balanced diet is being recommended for the individuals practicing strength sports.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Interferon alpha (IFN) has been shown to have established efficacy in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C but its effectiveness is unsatisfactory. Combined therapies with IFN and other antiviral or immunomodulatory drugs are under evaluation. A combination of interferon alpha and ursodeoxycholic acid UDCA has been reported to give better results than interferon alone. The aim of the study was to assess the efficacy of IFN monotherapy versus IFN and UDCA therapy in patients with chronic hepatitis C. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied 38 patients (25 males and 13 females) chronically infected with HCV (anti-HCV positive, HCV-RNA positive by PCR). Seventeen of them were treated with IFN 3 MU tiw for 6 months--Group I. The remaining 21 patients were treated with IFN, at the same dosage, plus UDCA (10 mg/kg/day) also for 6 months--Group II. Patients were followed for 6 months. 6 months after the end of therapy, laboratory biochemical parameters, HCV viremia and proportion as well as time to relapse were assessed. CONCLUSIONS: In contrast to previous reports we did not find any differences neither in proportion of HCV reactivation nor in the time of its appearance among patients treated because of chronic hepatitis B with IFN alone or with IFN plus UDCA combined therapy. We also did not find any difference in initial and late response to the treatments in both groups.

RESUMEN

Interferon alpha (INF) is routine treatment in patients with chronic hepatitis C. Many controlled investigations were evaluated to establish the optimal schedule of treatment with sustained virological and biochemical response. Recently, multicentre meta-analyses suggest that combination therapy (INF + Ribavirin) was more effective than treatment with interferon alone. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of four schedules of antiviral treatment in 445 patients with chronic hepatitis C. Combination therapy (INF + Ribavirin) given for 6 mo. and monotherapy (INF) for 18 mo. were more effective than interferon alone given for 6 mo. Treatment with INF alone for 6 mo. was demonstrated to be insufficient.

RESUMEN

Ultrasound of the right upper quadrant was performed in 261 patients just before and 2-4 h after liver biopsy (Menghini needle 1.4 mm). Serious complications were not seen. 9 patients had ultrasound-detected small hepatic hematomas (1 x 1 cm - 4 x 3 cm) 2-4 h after liver puncture, clinically however irrelevant. Follow-up ultrasound at 24 h and 48 h showed complete resolution of hematomas that had been detected previously (5 patients and 4 patients resp.). The results of our study indicate that intrahepatic hematomas are uncommon after liver biopsy; lesions disappear spontaneously within 24-48 h and that is why ultrasound detection of all post-biopsy intrahepatic hematomas should be performed at 2-4 h. If major complications are not seen a 4 h length of post-biopsy bed rest seems us as sufficiently for all the patients.
