RESUMEN

Rotating mirror systems based on the Miller Principle are a mainstay modality for ultra-high speed imaging within the range 1-25 million frames per second. Importantly, the true temporal accuracy of observations recorded in such cameras is sensitive to the framing rate that the system directly associates with each individual data acquisition. The purpose for the present investigation was to examine the validity of such system-reported frame rates in a widely used commercial system (a Cordin 550-62 model) by independently measuring the framing rate at the instant of triggering. Here, we found a small but significant difference between such measurements: the average discrepancy (over the entire spectrum of frame rates used) was found to be 0.66 ± 0.48%, with a maximum difference of 2.33%. The principal reason for this discrepancy was traced to non-optimized sampling of the mirror rotation rate within the system protocol. This paper thus serves three purposes: (i) we highlight a straightforward diagnostic approach to facilitate scrutiny of rotating-mirror system integrity; (ii) we raise awareness of the intrinsic errors associated with data previously acquired with this particular system and model; and (iii), we recommend that future control routines address the sampling issue by implementing real-time measurement at the instant of triggering.

RESUMEN

Hodgkin lymphoma involving the lung may present in a variety of radiographic and clinical patterns including solid or necrotizing lesions, with or without associated mediastinal adenopathy. Cavitary pulmonary lesions are exceedingly rare, occurring in less than 1% of cases, and are typically solitary. We report a case of an 18-year-old male presenting with multiple cavitating pulmonary nodules and a palpable mass in the neck. Imaging revealed associated mediastinal and cervical adenopathy. Biopsy of the neck mass and lung nodule initially revealed necrosis and granulomata, suggesting infection. Treatment for a presumed infectious etiology was without resolution. Subsequent open lung biopsy revealed marked granulomatous inflammation with diagnostic Reed-Sternberg cells. Hodgkin lymphoma should always be considered in the differential diagnosis of cavitary pulmonary lesions, especially those refractory to treatment.

RESUMEN

We describe a case of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma occurring in a 21-year-old male with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) due to a chromosome 4p16.3 deletion. This is the first documented case report of malignancy occurring in an adult with WHS. We also review the literature regarding patients with WHS and the joint occurrence of malignancy and discuss genetic changes involving chromosome 4 which may have contributed to the genesis of our patient's lymphoma.

RESUMEN

Juniperus ashei pollen, a significant aeroallergen, has been recorded during December and January in Tulsa, Oklahoma, over the past 20 years. The nearest upwind source for this pollen is populations growing in southern Oklahoma and central Texas, at distances of 200 km and 600 km respectively. Long-distance dispersal of J. ashei pollen into the Tulsa area shows a strong correlation with the trajectories of wind blowing across southern populations before traveling north towards eastern Oklahoma. The strong tie between climatic conditions and the occurrence of this aeroallergen within the Tulsa, Oklahoma, atmosphere provided a unique opportunity to forecast the dispersal, entrainment, and downwind deposition of this significant aeroallergen. Forecasts of long-distance J. ashei pollen dispersal began during the winter of 1998/1999. Each forecast uses defined climatic parameters to signal pollination at each source site. Coupled to these estimates of pollen release, forecast weather conditions and modeled wind trajectories are used to determine the threat of dispersal to downwind communities. The accuracy of these forecasts was determined by comparing the forecast "threat" to aerobiological records for the same period collected in the "Tulsa region". Analysis of the two seasons revealed only a single occurrence of "high" or "very high" pollen concentrations in Tulsa not directly linked to "moderate" or "severe" forecast threats from the southern source areas.

RESUMEN

Aerobiology is an interdisciplinary science representing the presence and movement of biological particles in the earth's atmosphere. As an important component of air quality, the impact of these particles on human populations and agriculture were discussed in terms of the ecology of the landscape targets involved. The role of aerobiology in air quality studies was considered.
