RESUMEN
We report focused light-induced activation of intense magnetic microconvection mediated by suspended magnetic nanoparticles in microscale two-dimensional optothermal grids. Fully anisotropic control of microflow and mass transport fluxes is achieved by engaging the magnetic field along one or the other preferred directions. The effect is based on the recently described thermal diffusion-magnetomechanical coupling in synthetic magnetic nanofluids. We expect that the new phenomenon can be applied as an efficient all-optical mixing strategy in integrated microfluidic devices. This article is part of the theme issue 'Transport phenomena in complex systems (part 2)'.

An analysis of reporting and statistical data showed the considerable changes in clinical-epidemiological indices of gastric and duodenum ulcer at the period from 1998 to 2012. The prevalence of the disease and the number of primary patients decreased in 2-3 times. The reduction of the rate of perforations and ulcerous bleeding had been observed. However, the authors noted, that a tendency of frequency of occurrence increased and efficacy indices reduced in the last years. The rate of postoperative lethality raised in the cases of perforated ulcer. On this basis, the authors recommend to reconsider the existing opinion about further extension of out-patient treatment of patients with given pathology.

The current rise in the incidence of cholelithiasis is accompanied by an increased frequency of its complicated forms. Mechanical jaundice is a common unfavourable complication of cholelithiasis and choledocholithiasis, its consequence. Epidemiology, etiology, and clinical features of this disease are discussed Classification of mechanical jaundice is proposed Much attention is given to its pathogenetic mechanisms. Methods of laboratory and instrumental diagnostics as well as approaches to the surgical treatment of mechanical jaundice are described

Neurohumoral changes were studied in 431 patients with acute intestinal obstruction and in experiments in 165 small laboratory animals with the model of small intestine ileus. The results were obtained on the basis of estimation of the concentration of catecholamines, acetylcholine-like substances, serotonine, histamine, their metabolism products in blood plasma and of the cardiointervalography data. The neurohumoral changes were shown to appear as early as the initial stage of the disease and to be progressing when the disease period became longer. The prevailing sympathetic activity was dependent on the decreased acetylcholine-like substances in blood plasma and tissues. The serotonine and histamine metabolism changed depending on the stage of the disease.

We review the recent progress of electrically injected and optically pumped mid-IR lasers based on antimonide quantum wells with the type II W configuration. W quantum-well diodes have achieved cw operation up to 195 K at lambda = 3.25 mum. Optically pumped devices that employ the diamond pressure bond heat sink have reached 290 K at 3 mum and 210 K at 6 mum. Pulsed power conversion efficiencies of up to 7% at 220 K have been attained by use of an optical pumping injection cavity approach, in which an etalon cavity for the pump beam significantly enhances its absorptance. The angled-grating distributed-feedback configuration has been used to obtain near-diffraction-limited output for an optical pumping stripe width of 50 mum.
RESUMEN
In situ measurements of CO concentration were recorded with tunable diode-laser absorption spectroscopy techniques in both the exhaust and the immediate post-flame regions of an atmospheric-pressure flat-flame burner operating on ethylene air. Two room-temperature cw single-mode InGaAsSb/AlGaAsSb diode lasers operating near 2.3 microm were tuned over individual transitions in the CO first overtone band (v' = 2 <-- v" = 0) to record high-resolution absorption line shapes in the exhaust duct [79 cm above the burner, approximately 470 K; R(15) transition at 4311.96 cm(-1)] and the immediate postflame zone [1.5 cm above the burner, 1820-1975 K; R(30) transition at 4343.81 cm(-1)]. The CO concentration was determined from the measured absorption and the gas temperature, which was monitored with type-S thermocouples. For measurements in the exhaust duct, the noise-equivalent absorbance was approximately 3 x 10(-5) (50-kHz detection bandwidth, 50-sweep average, 0.1-s total measurement time), which corresponds to a CO detection limit of 1.5 ppm m at 470 K. Wavelength modulation spectroscopy techniques were used to improve the detection limit in the exhaust to approximately 0.1 ppm m (approximately 500-Hz detection bandwidth, 20-sweep average, 0.4-s total measurement time). For measurements in the immediate postflame zone, the measured CO concentrations in the fuel-rich flames were in good agreement with chemical equilibrium predictions. These experiments demonstrate the utility of diode-laser absorption sensors operating near 2.3 microm for in situ combustion emission monitoring and combustion diagnostics.
RESUMEN
The structure of endogenic intoxication by products of the intermediate metabolism was studied in 32 patients with intestinal obstruction. The leading components of the endogenic intoxication are: acetone, propionic aldehyde and ethanol. In cases of a complicated course of the intestinal obstruction the operative treatment by traditional therapy in the postoperative period proved to be insufficient. Sessions of the intravascular laser irradiation of blood reducing the concentration of acetone and propionic aldehyde were performed in 19 patients without any changes in the concentration of ethanol.
