RESUMEN

A cross-correlation frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) concept, potentially suitable for characterizing few or sub-cycle pulses in a single shot, is described in which a counter-propagating transient grating is used as both the gate and the dispersive element in a FROG spectrometer. An all-reflective setup, which can operate over the whole transmission range of the nonlinear medium, within the sensitivity range of the matrix sensor, is also proposed, and proof-of-principle experiments for the ultraviolet and visible-to-near-infrared spectral ranges are reported.

RESUMEN

Compression of 250-fs, 1-µJ pulses from a KLM Yb:YAG thin-disk oscillator down to 9.1 fs is demonstrated. A kagomé-PCF with a 36-µm core-diameter is used with a pressure gradient from 0 to 40 bar of krypton. Compression to 22 fs is achieved by 1200 fs2 group-delay-dispersion provided by chirped mirrors. By coupling the output into a second kagomé-PCF with a pressure gradient from 0 to 25 bar of argon, octave spanning spectral broadening via the soliton-effect is observed at 18-W average output power. Self-compression to 9.1 fs is measured, with compressibility to 5 fs predicted. Also observed is strong emission in the visible via dispersive wave generation, amounting to 4% of the total output power.

RESUMEN

Electrons in two-dimensional crystals with a honeycomb lattice structure possess a valley degree of freedom (DOF) in addition to charge and spin. These systems are predicted to exhibit an anomalous Hall effect whose sign depends on the valley index. Here, we report the observation of this so-called valley Hall effect (VHE). Monolayer MoS2 transistors are illuminated with circularly polarized light, which preferentially excites electrons into a specific valley, causing a finite anomalous Hall voltage whose sign is controlled by the helicity of the light. No anomalous Hall effect is observed in bilayer devices, which have crystal inversion symmetry. Our observation of the VHE opens up new possibilities for using the valley DOF as an information carrier in next-generation electronics and optoelectronics.

We demonstrate temporal pulse compression in gas-filled kagomé hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) using two different approaches: fiber-mirror compression based on self-phase modulation under normal dispersion, and soliton effect self-compression under anomalous dispersion with a decreasing pressure gradient. In the first, efficient compression to near-transform-limited pulses from 103 to 10.6 fs was achieved at output energies of 10.3 µJ. In the second, compression from 24 to 6.8 fs was achieved at output energies of 6.6 µJ, also with near-transform-limited pulse shapes. The results illustrate the potential of kagomé-PCF for postprocessing the output of fiber lasers. We also show that, using a negative pressure gradient, ultrashort pulses can be delivered directly into vacuum.

RESUMEN

We present an all-fiber high average power fiber optical parametric oscillator based on standard telecommunications dispersion-shifted fiber. The output of the oscillator is continuously tunable out to ±28 THz from the pump wavelength. The average power of the oscillator's output is in excess of 1.9 W in each sideband out to ±25 THz detuning. Between 5 and 14 THz detuning, the average power of the Stokes output is in excess of 3.8 W.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence and pattern of arterial calcification in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). BACKGROUND: Patients with RA are prone to premature atherosclerosis; nonetheless the prevalence and extent of atherosclerosis in different vascular beds and their relationship to each other remain unknown. METHODS: We studied the distribution and extent of arterial calcification in 85 RA patients and 85 age-and sex-matched controls. Arterial calcification as determined by calcium score (CS) were measured using multi-detector computed tomography in thoracic aorta, coronary and carotid arteries. RESULTS: Compared with controls, RA patients had a significantly higher average CS and prevalence of CS > 0 in aorta, coronary and carotid arteries and overall arteries (all P < 0.05). After adjusting for age and sex, RA patients had a significantly higher relative risk of developing calcification in the aorta [Odds Ratio (OR) = 19.5, 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 8.0-47.6], followed by the carotid arteries (OR = 5.7, 95% CI:1.7-18.7) and coronary arteries (OR = 5.0, 95% CI:2.2-11.1) compared with controls (all P < 0.01). Amongst RA patients aged >60, 90% had diffuse arterial calcification, especially over the thoracic aorta, compared with 55% of controls who had arterial calcification clustered in the coronary arteries (P < 0.05). RA patients with total CS > 0 were older with a higher urea level and C-reactive protein than those without arterial calcification, no factor was found to be independently predictive for arterial calcification (all P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrated that RA patients had earlier onset, more diffuse arterial calcification over multiple vascular beds and more preferential involvement of thoracic aorta, rather than coronary artery when compared with control.

The goal of this project was to evaluate the feasibility of co-composting of soybean residues and leaves and the effects of turning frequency on compost quality. Soybean residues were mixed with leaves and sawdust in 1:1:3 (w/w wet weight) for achieving a C/N ratio of about 30. Three heaps of about 4 m3 of compost mixtures were prepared receiving a turning frequency of daily (pile A), 3-day (pile B) and weekly (pile C) turning. Different turning frequencies did not significantly affect the changes in pH and volatile solids throughout the composting period. High turning frequency caused a lower electrical conductivity and NH4-N contents as well as a shorter duration of thermophilic phase, because of a high heat loss by evaporation and volatilization of ammonia in the pile. The highest C decomposition of 4% occurred in the pile with a 3-day turning period, which coincided with the higher-nitrogen content in this treatment. All treatments with different turning frequencies reached maturation at 63 days as indicated by the soluble organic carbon, soluble NH4-N, C/N ratio and cress seed germination index. However, increasing the aeration during composting period was beneficial in accelerating the maturation process. Taking into consideration less labour and lower operation costs as compared to daily turning, it can be suggested that a 3-day turning frequency would be more appropriate for reaching acceptable quality of compost and ease in operation.

We have examined the presence of loss of heterozygosity (LOH) on chromosome 3p in histologically normal nasopharyngeal epithelia (NP), dysplastic lesions, and carcinoma of the nasopharynx from different ethnic and geographic regions. Microdissected normal NP from noncancerous individuals and nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) samples from both the high-risk group (southern Chinese in Hong Kong) and two low-risk groups for NPC (central/northern Chinese in Anhui/Beijing and Caucasians in Toronto) were included. All NPC samples showed high incidence of 3p deletion (81-100%). High frequencies of LOH on 3p were also detected in normal NP (73.9%) and dysplastic lesions (75%) from the southern Chinese. Significant lower frequency of LOH on 3p was noted in normal NP from the low-risk groups (20%) than those from high-risk groups (P = 0.0003). The presence of such genetic alterations in the histologically normal NP and dysplastic lesions suggests that it is an early event in tumor development. The higher frequency of 3p LOH found in normal NP from southern Chinese compared with those from low-risk groups may be related to the distinct cancer incidence among these populations.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a common cancer in South China but is rare in other parts of the world. To better understand the molecular basis of this cancer, we performed high-resolution allelotyping on 27 microdissected primary tumors using 382 microsatellite markers. We have detected high frequencies of allelic imbalance on 3p (96.3%), 9p (85.2%), 9q (88.9%), 11q (74.1%), 12q (70.4%), 13q (55.6%), 14q (85.2%), and 16q (55.6%). Nonrandom allelic changes of 12q and 16q were revealed for the first time. In addition, loss of heterozygosity on chromosomal arms 1p (37.0%), 5q (44.4%), and 12p (44.4%) were also common in NPC. Multiple minimally deleted regions, 7-40 cM, were identified at 3p14-24.2, 11q21-23, 13q12-14, 13q31-32, 14q24-32, and 16q22-23. Frequent deletions of these minimally deleted regions implied the presence of tumor suppressor genes that may be involved in the development of NPC. Consistent loss of heterozygosity on 3p, 9p, and 14q in almost all tumors suggested that such changes are critical events in NPC tumorigenesis.

We have recently reported that inactivation of the p16 gene by mutation and deletion is common in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). The present study demonstrates that hypermethylation of the 5' CpG island can serve as an alternative mechanism for inactivation of the p16 gene in this tumor. Using Southern blotting analysis and multiplex PCR, aberrant methylation of the 5' CpG island of the p16 gene was found in a NPC xenograft (xeno-666) and 6 (22%) of 27 primary tumors, but not in normal tissues of the nasopharynx. In the NPC xenograft (xeno-666) and its newly derived cell line (cell-666), both showing hypermethylation of the p16 gene, no p16 gene expression was found. After treatment with 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine, reexpression of the p16 gene was detected in the cell line cell-666. These findings suggest that aberrant methylation of the 5' CpG island may participate in the transcriptional inactivation of the p16 gene in NPC. The present results further support that the p16 gene is the critical target on chromosome 9p21 for inactivation during the development of this disease.
