RESUMEN

The work describes a novel approach to the design of a fast, multichannel measurement system for plasma diagnostics [A. Wojenski et al., Fusion Eng. Des. 123, 727 (2016)]. Its main scope is to provide measurements of soft X-ray (SXR) emission during plasma phenomena at the W-Environment in Steady-state Tokamak (WEST), especially for monitoring and tracing tungsten impurities. This paper describes the vertical Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) camera installed at the WEST [M. Chernyshova et al., J. Instrument. 10, P10022 (2015)]. The designed GEM detector readout board has more than 100 channels, resulting in high-performance requirements for the data acquisition and processing system. The novel system construction approach is that the unit works on the raw signals providing a high quality of the data, especially in the scope of pileup effect analysis. In the case of doubtful results, the source data can be easily reviewed offline. The data selection and transmission are done in Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) on the custom boards with the custom Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI)-Express Gen2 switch that allows us to register signals from multiple FPGAs and then process the data by complex algorithms [G. Kasprowicz et al., J. Fusion Energy 38, 480 (2019)]. The firmware is replaceable and different working modes can be applied (some under verification): global trigger mode, high-speed data serialization, and extended signal registration. Low level optimized central processing unit software for data readout was also designed [P. Linczuk et al., J. Instrum. 14, C05001 (2019)]. The installation of the system is described due to complex system components' distribution. The first results of the successful acquisition of the plasma at the WEST are discussed. The corresponding SXR energy and topology spectra were computed. Those are the first technical measurements of the system to ensure verification of data quality.

Data concerning the impact of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) on the thromboelastography (TEG) indices in venousthromboembolism (VTE) patients are limited. The goal of this study was to compare the impact of DOACs on clot properties measured in whole blood using TEG kaolin test and in plasma obtained from real-life VTE patients. We assessed 53 patients, including 20 on rivaroxaban, 20 on apixaban, and 13 on dabigatran. Using the TEG® 5000, coagulation status was evaluated in whole blood samples, while plasma fibrin clot permeability (Ks) and its susceptibility to lysis (CLT) were assessed in citrated plasma. Plasma concentrations of rivaroxaban (99 [48 - 311] ng/ml) and apixaban (85 [40 - 105] ng/ml) were positively associated with Ks and inversely with CLT, while dabigatran concentrations (71 [39 - 98] ng/ml) correlated positively with Ks. Moreover, Ks was associated with clot formation times (R and K), time to maximum clot strength (TMA), coagulation index (CI) reflecting the overall coagulation status, and whole blood clot lysis time (TEG-CLT). Blood clot lysis index (CL30) was associated with plasma CLT in all patients on DOACs, while TMA correlated with CLT only in patients on apixaban. Higher DOAC concentrations were associated with longer retardation of whole blood clot formation and longer time needed to reach maximum level of its strength as well as with more permeable clots. We concluded that plasma fibrin clot properties correlate with corresponding TEG indices suggesting that TEG might be helpful in providing prognostic information about DOAC influence in VTE patients.

Unfavorable fibrin clot features have been observed in patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE). We investigated whether rivaroxaban, a direct factor Xa inhibitor, and vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) can improve plasma clot viscoelastic properties. We studied four age- and sex-matched groups: 25 healthy controls, 15 VTE patients taking rivaroxaban 20 mg/day (blood concentration, 145 (67 - 217) ng/ml), 15 VTE patients taking VKA (INR: 2 - 3), and 15 VTE patients who stopped oral anticoagulant therapy (OAT). Using a hybrid rheometier the storage (G') and loss (G") moduli were evaluated in citrated plasma after addition of 5 pmol/l tissue factor. Fiber thickness within clots was assessed using scanning electron microscopy. Higher G' but not G" was observed for VTE patients taking rivaroxaban (+34%; post hoc, P = 0.029) compared to controls. As reflected by lower G' and G", patients taking rivaroxaban (-19% and -30%; post hoc, P = 0.0013 and P < 0.0001, respectively) formed less stiff and viscous clots compared to VTE patients after OAT withdrawal, also after adjustment for fibrinogen. VTE patients treated with rivaroxaban and VKA had similar clot viscoelastic properties (post hoc, P = 0.85 for G' and P = 0.29 for G"). G' and G" correlated with plasma rivaroxaban concentrations (r = -0.67, P = 0.005 and r = -0.59, P = 0.021, respectively), and the time from the last dose of rivaroxaban intake (r = 0.59, P = 0.02 and r = 0.58, P = 0.022, respectively). G' and G" showed no association with INR in patients on VKAs. G' or G" were not associated with fibrin diameter on scanning electron microscopy images in either group. Our preliminary study shows that both rivaroxaban and VKA improve clot viscoelastic properties in VTE patients, which might contribute to their antithrombotic effects. G' and G" may reflect specific clot physical features, beyond key plasma clot characteristics, which highlights benefits from comprehensive plasma clot analysis in patients with thrombotic diseases.

A detecting system based on the Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) technology is considered for tokamak plasma radiation monitoring. In order to estimate its capabilities in processing and recording intense photon flux (up to ∼0.1 MHz/mm2), the imaging effectiveness of GEM detectors was tested with different patterned anode planes (i.e., different signal readouts): a simple hexagonal readout structure and three structures with interconnected electrodes (XY square, XY rectangular, and UXV). It was found that under intense photon flux, all the readouts fail to account for a considerable amount of the incoming signals due to mostly photon position determination ambiguity and overlapped signals. Analysis of the signals that can be used to determine photon position and energy unambiguously showed that the UXV readout structure is more effective among the readouts with interconnected electrodes. Along with similar spatial resolution and accuracy, the UXV based layout could be considered as a quite promising base of the interconnected anode electrodes configuration, keeping in mind that the photon rate capability has to be improved for the final application.

The measurement system based on gas electron multiplier detector is developed for soft X-ray diagnostics of tokamak plasmas. The multi-channel setup is designed for estimation of the energy and the position distribution of an X-ray source. The focal measuring issue is the charge cluster identification by its value and position estimation. The fast and accurate mode of the serial data acquisition is applied for the dynamic plasma diagnostics. The charge clusters are counted in the space determined by 2D position, charge value, and time intervals. Radiation source characteristics are presented by histograms for a selected range of position, time intervals, and cluster charge values corresponding to the energy spectra.

A Gaseous Electron Multiplier (GEM)-based detector is being developed for soft X-ray diagnostics on tokamaks. Its main goal is to facilitate transport studies of impurities like tungsten. Such studies are very relevant to ITER, where the excessive accumulation of impurities in the plasma core should be avoided. This contribution provides details of the preliminary tests at ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) with a focus on the most important aspects for detector operation in harsh radiation environment. It was shown that both spatially and spectrally resolved data could be collected, in a reasonable agreement with other AUG diagnostics. Contributions to the GEM signal include also hard X-rays, gammas, and neutrons. First simulations of the effect of high-energy photons have helped understanding these contributions.

The paper concerns fast protons and neutrons from D-D fusion reactions in a Plasma-Focus-1000U facility. Measurements were performed with nuclear-track detectors arranged in "sandwiches" of an Al-foil and two PM-355 detectors separated by a polyethylene-plate. The Al-foil eliminated all primary deuterons, but was penetrable for fast fusion protons. The foil and first PM-355 detector were penetrable for fast neutrons, which were converted into recoil-protons in the polyethylene and recorded in the second PM-355 detector. The "sandwiches" were irradiated by discharges of comparable neutron-yields. Analyses of etched tracks and computer simulations of the fusion-products behavior in the detectors were performed.

This study tested the hypotheses that age-induced alteration in cortisol, ACTH, and glucose concentrations are due to differences in the response of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and that exercise training would attenuate these differences. Six old (22.0±0.7 yr; mean±SE) and 6 young (7.3±0.6 yr) unfit Standardbred mares ran 3 graded exercise tests (GXT): before (GXT1), after 8 wk of training (GXT2), and at study end at 15 wk (GXT3). Mares trained 3 d/wk at 60% maximum heart rate. Each mare underwent 5 endocrine stimulation tests pre- and posttraining: 1) control (CON), 2) adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTHtest), 3) combined dexamethasone suppression/ACTH (DEX/ACTH), 4) dexamethasone suppression (DEX), and 5) combined DEX/corticotropin releasing factor (DEX/CRF). For CON, there was no difference in plasma cortisol between age groups pretraining (P=0.19), but young mares had a 102% higher mean (P=0.02) plasma cortisol concentration than old mares posttraining. The pretraining ACTHtest showed young mares had a 72% higher (P=0.05) overall plasma cortisol concentration compared to old. There was no overall age difference in cortisol in the posttraining ACTHtest, but old mares still had lower cortisol concentrations at 30 min during the test, suggesting decreased adrenal response to ACTH stimulation. There was no difference in cortisol response between old and young mares in DEX, DEX/ACTH, or DEX/CRF tests. Young mares had higher (P=0.02) overall plasma cortisol concentration posttraining in response to DEX/ACTH, but old mares showed no change. In CON and DEX/CRF, there were no age differences in plasma ACTH concentration, pre- or posttraining. Pretraining, there was no age difference in glucose response to DEX, but posttraining old mares had a 4% (P=0.04) lower overall plasma glucose concentration compared to young. Posttraining, old mares had lower mean plasma glucose concentrations during DEX compared to pretraining (P=0.02), but there was no change pre- vs. posttraining in young mares (P=0.19). Old and young mares had lower plasma glucose concentrations posttraining during DEX/ACTH (P<0.001 and P=0.05, respectively) and DEX/CRF (P<0.001 and P=0.003, respectively) compared to pretraining. Both the pituitary and adrenal glands experience a decline in function with age although the exact mechanisms behind such changes remain unknown. Exercise training facilitates the counteraction of these deficits.

The Note reports on experimental studies of ripple born fast electrons within the TORE-SUPRA facility, which were performed by means of a modified measuring head equipped with diamond detectors designed especially for recording the electron-induced Cherenkov radiation. There are presented signals produced by fast electrons in the TORE-SUPRA machine, which were recorded during two experimental campaigns performed in 2010. Shapes of these electron-induced signals are considerably different from those observed during the first measurements carried out by the prototype Cherenkov probe in 2008. An explanation of the observed differences is given.

A diagnostic technique based on the Cherenkov effect is proposed for detection and characterization of fast (super-thermal and runaway) electrons in fusion devices. The detectors of Cherenkov radiation have been specially designed for measurements in the ISTTOK tokamak. Properties of several materials have been studied to determine the most appropriate one to be used as a radiator of Cherenkov emission in the detector. This technique has enabled the detection of energetic electrons (70 keV and higher) and the determination of their spatial and temporal variations in the ISTTOK discharges. Measurement of hard x-ray emission has also been carried out in experiments for validation of the measuring capabilities of the Cherenkov-type detector and a high correlation was found between the data of both diagnostics. A reasonable agreement was found between experimental data and the results of numerical modeling of the runaway electron generation in ISTTOK.

A diagnostics capable of characterizing the runaway and superthermal electrons has been developing on the ISTTOK tokamak. In previous paper, a use of single-channel Cherenkov-type detector with titanium filter for runaway electron studies in ISTTOK was reported. To measure fast electron populations with different energies, a prototype of a four-channel detector with molybdenum filters was designed. Test-stand studies of filters with different thicknesses (1, 3, 7, 10, 20, 50, and 100 µm) have shown that they should allow the detection of electrons with energies higher than 69, 75, 87, 95, 120, 181, and 260 keV, respectively. First results of measurements with the four-channel detector revealed the possibility to measure reliably different fast electrons populations simultaneously.

The paper presents a schematic design and tests of a system applicable for measurements of fast electron pulses emitted from high-temperature plasma generated inside magnetic confinement fusion machines, and particularly in the TORE-SUPRA facility. The diagnostic system based on the registration of the Cherenkov radiation induced by fast electrons within selected solid radiators is considered, and electron low-energy thresholds for different radiators are given. There are some estimates of high thermal loads, which might be deposited by intense electron beams upon parts of the diagnostic equipment within the TORE-SUPRA device. There are some proposed measures to overcome this difficulty by the selection of appropriate absorption filters and Cherenkov radiators, and particularly by the application of a fast-moving reciprocating probe. The paper describes the measuring system, its tests, as well as some results of the preliminary measurements of fast electrons within TORE-SUPRA facility.

The paper presents an improved version of a miniature mass-spectrometer of the Thomson-type, which has been adopted for ion analysis near the dense plasma region inside a vacuum chamber. Problems connected with the separation of ions from plasma streams are considered. Input diaphragms and pumping systems, needed to ensure good vacuum inside the analyzing region, are described. The application of the miniature Thomson-type analyzer is illustrated by ion parabolas recorded in plasma-focus facility and rod plasma injector experiment. A quantitative analysis of the recorded ion parabolas is presented. Factors influencing accuracy of the ion analysis are discussed and methods of the spectrometer calibration are described.

In their classic paper, Yu et al (1998 Phys. Med. Biol. 43 91) investigated the interplay between tumor motion caused by breathing and dynamically collimated, intensity-modulated radiation delivery. The paper's analytic model assumed an idealized, sinusoidal pattern of motion. In this work, we investigate the effect of tumor motion based on patients' breathing patterns for typical tomotherapy treatments with field widths of 1.0 and 2.5 cm. The measured breathing patterns of 52 lung- and upper-abdominal-cancer patients were used to model a one-dimensional motion. A convolution of the measured beam-dose profiles with the motion model was used to compute the dose-distribution errors, and the positive and negative dose errors were recorded for each simulation. The dose errors increased with increasing motion magnitude, until the motion was similar in magnitude to the field width. For the 1.0 cm and 2.5 cm field widths, the maximum dose-error magnitude exceeded 10% in some simulations, even with breathing-motion magnitudes as small as 5 mm and 10 mm, respectively. Dose errors also increased slightly with increasing couch speed. We propose that the errors were due to subtle drifts in the amplitude and frequency of breathing motion, as well as changes in baseline (exhalation) position, causing both over- and under-dosing of the target. The results of this study highlight potential breathing-motion-induced dose delivery errors in tomotherapy. However, for conventionally fractionated treatments, the dose delivery errors may not be co-located and may average out over many fractions, although this may not be true for hypofractionated treatments.

RESUMEN

Gas, fluid, or solid Cherenkov-type detectors have been widely used in high-energy physics for determination of parameters of charged particles, which are moving with relativistic velocities. This paper presents experimental results on the detection of runaway electrons using Cherenkov-type detectors in the ISTTOK tokamak discharges. Such detectors have been specially designed for measurements of energetic electrons in tokamak plasma. The technique based on the use of the Cherenkov-type detectors has enabled the detection of energetic electrons (energies higher than 80 keV) and determination of their spatial and temporal parameters in the ISTTOK discharges. Obtained experimental data were found in adequate agreement to the results of numerical modeling of the runaway electron generation in ISTTOK.

A novel small animal conformal radiation therapy system has been designed and prototyped: MicroRT. The microRT system integrates multimodality imaging, radiation treatment planning, and conformal radiation therapy that utilizes a clinical 192Ir isotope high dose rate source as the radiation source (teletherapy). A multiparameter dose calculation algorithm based on Monte Carlo dose distribution simulations is used to efficiently and accurately calculate doses for treatment planning purposes. A series of precisely machined tungsten collimators mounted onto a cylindrical collimator assembly is used to provide the radiation beam portals. The current design allows a source-to-target distance range of 1-8 cm at four beam angles: 0 degrees (beam oriented down), 90 degrees, 180 degrees, and 270 degrees. The animal is anesthetized and placed in an immobilization device with built-in fiducial markers and scanned using a computed tomography, magnetic resonance, or positron emission tomography scanner prior to irradiation. Treatment plans using up to four beam orientations are created utilizing a custom treatment planning system-microRTP. A three-axis computer-controlled stage that supports and accurately positions the animals is programmed to place the animal relative to the radiation beams according to the microRTP plan. The microRT system positioning accuracy was found to be submillimeter. The radiation source is guided through one of four catheter channels and placed in line with the tungsten collimators to deliver the conformal radiation treatment. The microRT hardware specifications, the accuracy of the treatment planning and positioning systems, and some typical procedures for radiobiological experiments that can be performed with the microRT device are presented.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Ageing appears to affect immune and neuroendocirne function in horses and response to acute exercise. No studies have examined the combined effects of training and ageing on immune and neuroendocirne function in horses. HYPOTHESIS: To ascertain whether training and age would affect the plasma beta-endorphin (BE) and cortisol (C) as well as immune function responses to acute exercise in Standardbred mares. METHODS: Graded exercise tests (GXT) and simulated race tests (SRT) were performed before and after 12 weeks training at 60 % HRmax. BE and C were measured at rest and at 5, 10, 20, 40, 60 and 120 min post GXT. Leucocyte cell number, CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocyte subsets, and mitogen stimulated lymphoproliferative response (LPR), were measured in jugular blood before and after the SRTs. RESULTS: Cortisol rose by 5 min post GXT in young (Y) and middle-age (MA) mares (P<0.05) and remained elevated until 40 and 60 min post GXT, respectively during both pre- and post training GXT. There was no rise in C in old (0) mares after either GXT (P>0.05). Pretraining BE rose (P<0.05) by 5 min post GXT in all mares. After training, BE was higher in Y and O vs. MA (P<0.05) at 5 min post GXT. Post training BE was higher at 5 min post GXT in Y and O vs. pretraining (P<0.05). After SRT, lymphocyte number rose in all mares (P<0.05); however, lower lymphocyte numbers (P<0.05) were seen in MA vs. Y and O vs. MA (P<0.05). The O had reduced LPR to Con A and PHA stimulation (P<0.05) compared to Y and MA after the SRT after both pre- and post training SRT. LPR to PWM was lower (P<0.05) in O vs. Y and MA after the pretraining SRT. Training caused an increase in resting LPR to PWM in MA only (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Both age and training altered the plasma beta-endorphin and cortisol responses as well as and immune responses to acute exercise. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE: This study provides important information on the effects of ageing and training that will aid in the management and care of an increasing number of active older horses.
