RESUMEN

Acantholytic dermatosis of the vulva is a rare condition, presenting with papular eruption in the genital area without history of Darier disease or Hailey-Hailey disease. We report a case with a papular pruritic eruption in the region of the vulva, coalescing into plaques. Biopsy specimen showed irregular acanthosis with an area of split-like bullous formation in the deeper part of the epidermis, as well as acantholytic cells, marked hypergranulosis and hyperkeratosis, compatible with the rare diagnosis of acantholytic dermatosis of the vulva. We review the clinical and histological characteristics of this uncommon disease.

RESUMEN

The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of transcutaneous immunization with tumor antigen to induce cell-mediated immunity. For this purpose, hydrophilic recombinant gp100 protein (HR-gp100) was topically applied on human intact skin in vitro, and used as a vaccine in a mouse model. We demonstrate that HR-gp100 permeates into human skin, and is processed and presented by human dendritic cells. In a mouse model, an HR-gp100-based vaccine triggered antigen-specific T cell responses, as shown by proliferation assays, ELISA and intracellular staining for IFN-γ. Transcutaneous antigen delivery may provide a safe, simple and effective method to elicit cell-mediated immunity.

RESUMEN

Contact dermatitis is one of the leading causes of occupational morbidity and absenteeism and has become an intolerable cause of missed workdays and health problems in the Israeli military. The aim of this study was to determine the rate of contact dermatitis in maintenance and clerical workers, the common allergens causing it, and the background of atopy in the subjects in order to design preventive measures. Medical records of all recruits to the Israel Defense Forces from 2000 to 2003 were reviewed for contact dermatitis. The 102 cases found were further assessed for job assignment, atopic background, and allergens. Of the 102 cases, 60 had irritant contact dermatitis and 42 had allergic contact dermatitis, of which 33 (78.6%) were maintenance workers, mainly mechanics. 13 soldiers in the maintenance job category (39%) and 2 soldiers in the clerical group (22.2%) had atopic background. There were 55 positive reactions in patch tests, 25 of them to oil and cooling fluids, with 14.5% attributed to methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone) (Kathon CG). Atopy was found to be a risk factor for allergic contact dermatitis in our study and should be screened for in job assignment procedures in the military. Oil and greases contain significant allergens, especially their preservatives.

RESUMEN

Ulcerative lichen planus of the feet is a rare variant of lichen planus characterized by the constellation of a chronic bullous and ulcerative eruption limited to the feet, atrophy of involved skin and nails, and cicatricial alopecia. Only split-thickness skin grafting has here to been documented to be effective. We here report a case with ulcerative lichen planus of the feet successfully treated with medium-dose ultraviolet A-1.
