RESUMEN

The widespread diffusion of low-cost but high-performance hardware is enhancing the realization of scientific equipment with features at the research laboratory level. In this paper, we demonstrate hardware implementation of a surface plasmon resonance compact device with high accuracy and measurement times appropriate for many applications. Image acquisition is realized by a Raspberry Pi single board computer with a camera module, and a Python code is used to process data. A flexible optical setup can work in two different configurations, namely, the inspection mode and angle resolved measurement mode. The inspection mode is used to precisely locate the light-emitting diode interrogation beam on the sample, avoiding uneven or faulty regions. The measurement mode allows us to monitor in real time the position of the minimum reflectivity with subpixel resolution. Performance tests show a resolution in the bulk refractive index of 4.9 × 10-6 refractive index units for 10 s acquisition time.

RESUMEN

Colloidal suspensions of oxocarbon-encapsulated gold nanoparticles have been synthesized in a one-step procedure by pulsed-laser ablation (PLA) at 532 nm of a solid gold target placed in aqueous solution containing CO2 absorbers, but without any stabilizing agent. Multi-wavelength surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy allows the identification of adsorbed amorphous carbon and graphite, Au-carbonyl, Au coordinated CO2-derived bicarbonates/carbonates and hydroxyl groups around the AuNPs core. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray analysis and high resolution transmission electron microscopy highlight the organic shell structure around the crystalline metal core. The stability of the colloidal solution of nanocomposites (NCs) seems to be driven by solvation forces and is achieved only in neutral or basic pH using monovalent hydroxide counter-ions (NaOH, KOH). The NCs are characterized by a blue shift of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) band typical of metal-ligand stabilization by terminal π-back bonding, attributed to a core charging effect caused by Au-carbonyls. Total organic carbon measurements detect the final content of organic carbon in the colloidal solution of NCs that is about six times higher than the value of the water solution used to perform PLA. The colloidal dispersions of NCs are stable for months and are applied as analytical probes in amino glycoside antibiotic LSPR based sensing.

RESUMEN

We have developed a new easy-to-use probe that can be used to combine atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM). We show that, using this device, the evanescent field, obtained by total internal reflection conditions in a prism, can be visualized by approaching the surface with the scanning tip. Furthermore, we were able to obtain simultaneous AFM and SNOM images of a standard test grating in air and in liquid. The lateral resolution in AFM and SNOM mode was estimated to be 45 and 160 nm, respectively. This new probe overcomes a number of limitations that commercial probes have, while yielding the same resolution.

RESUMEN

In this communication, we report on the fabrication of GM1-rich solid-supported bilayer lipid membranes (ssBLM) made of sphingomyelin and cholesterol, the main components of lipid rafts, which are the physiological hosting microenvironment of GM1 on the cell membrane. The functionality of the ganglioside has been checked by measuring the apparent dissociation constant K(D) of the complex formed by the ß-subunit of the cholera toxin and GM1. The value found deviates less than one order of magnitude from that measured for in vivo cells, indicating the potential of these ssBLM as optimized in vitro biomimetic platforms.

RESUMEN

The fabrication of solid-supported artificial lipid bilayers enriched with biological agents is an important step for acquiring more insights into their behavior from in vitro studies. In this work we demonstrate the formation of lipid artificial membranes enriched with ganglioside GM3, whose role in the cell proliferation and tumor angiogenesis is still an object of extensive investigation. The membranes are formed by fusion of small unilamellar vesicles (SUV) obtained from the sonication of multi-lamellar vesicles (MLV) formed from a hydrated mixture of GM3, brain sphingomyelin and cholesterol. The effective formation of SUV was confirmed by Dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. The recognition of the ganglioside in the biomimetic raft like biomembranes is accomplished via surface plasmon resonance (SPR) by exploiting the ganglioside affinity with wheat germ agglutinin (WGA). The affinity constant of the binding between the inglobated GM3 and WGA has been measured for three different GM3 molar concentrations. Beside the effective generation of GM3-enriched biomimetic membranes, our results indicate a decrease in the apparent WGA-GM3 dissociation constant at increasing GM3 concentrations up to 20 mol%, consistent with clustering effects of the ganglioside in the fabricated biomembranes.

RESUMEN

We present a fibre-top probe fabricated by carving a tipped cantilever on an optical fibre, with the tip machined in correspondence of the fibre core. When approached to an optical prism illuminated under total internal reflection conditions, the tip of the cantilever detects the optical tunnelling signal, while the light coupled from the opposite end of the fibre measures the deflection of the cantilever. Our results suggest that fibre-top technology can be used for the development of a new generation of hybrid probes that can combine atomic force microscopy with scanning near field optical microscopy.

RESUMEN

We studied the potentials of All Optical Switches (AOS) based on the intensity-dependent coupling and decoupling of light into the SPP modes (Surface Plasmon Polaritons) of a sinusoidally corrugated thin metal film (TMF), due to Kerr induced refractive index changes of the surrounding dielectrics. The ideal device has two spatially separated outputs, collecting the reflected and transmitted light and the active volume can be as small as 10(-2) mm(3). Gold and PTS (poly-(2,4-hexadiyne-1,6-diol bis(p-toluene sulfonate) are the materials considered. Losses are limited to 1.5 dB,while a 20 dB extinction ratio per gate has been theoretically demonstrated with signal pulsewidths of 5-10 ps , using a maximum optical switching peak power of 11 kW.

RESUMEN

The possibility of building angular and displacement sensors based on the phenomenon of attenuated total reflection (ATR) is explored both numerically and experimentally. ATR occurs when a surface wave is excited by an incoming TM electromagnetic wave through a resonant phase-matching process, as in the Kretschmann coupling scheme. The reflected intensity strongly depends on the angle of incidence of the beam. We first show some computations of the sensitivity and the linearity of an ATR-based sensor, then proceed to the experiment, illustrating how an angular resolution of the order of 0.1 arc sec can be obtained with moderate effort. Finally we show how the sensor, combined with a simple optical arrangement, can be used to detect and measure nanometric displacements, as those provided by piezoelectric actuators.

RESUMEN

The potential of double-wavelength interferometry is well known, especially regarding the capability of performing absolute distance measurements of rough targets with high resolutions. We describe the experimental results obtained with a demonstration model of a double-wavelength interferometer with superheterodyne detection. Our system, implemented with two four-quadrant detectors to improve the detection probability, has demonstrated the ability to reach resolutions of 0.2 mm at 5-m distances on rough targets in 50-ms integration time.

RESUMEN

In this paper we analyze the probability density function of the superheterodyne signal obtained in a two-wavelength interferometer from the beat of a local oscillator laser beam with a speckled return beam from a rough target. Theoretical investigation shows that, by using an increased number of spatially separated detectors, one can improve noticeably the detection probability of the superheterodyne signal. Experimental results obtained with a four-quadrant detector are in good agreement with theory.
