RESUMEN

Flashbulb memories (FBMs) refer to vivid and long-lasting autobiographical memories for the circumstances in which people learned of a shocking and consequential public event. A cross-national study across eleven countries aimed to investigate FBM formation following the first COVID-19 case news in each country and test the effect of pandemic-related variables on FBM. Participants had detailed memories of the date and others present when they heard the news, and had partially detailed memories of the place, activity, and news source. China had the highest FBM specificity. All countries considered the COVID-19 emergency as highly significant at both the individual and global level. The Classification and Regression Tree Analysis revealed that FBM specificity might be influenced by participants' age, subjective severity (assessment of COVID-19 impact in each country and relative to others), residing in an area with stringent COVID-19 protection measures, and expecting the pandemic effects. Hierarchical regression models demonstrated that age and subjective severity negatively predicted FBM specificity, whereas sex, pandemic impact expectedness, and rehearsal showed positive associations in the total sample. Subjective severity negatively affected FBM specificity in Turkey, whereas pandemic impact expectedness positively influenced FBM specificity in China and negatively in Denmark.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to identify the variables that best predict measures of aggression, empathy, and forgiveness, as well as the main differences in vulnerable, hostile and safe contexts, in a sample of children and adolescents belonging to a vulnerable population. Method: A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted with a non-probabilistic incidental sample of 85 participants. Psychometric measures of empathy, aggression, and forgiveness were used. The participants were invited to a victim assistance foundation for an interview and test application. Results: Statistically significant effects were found among the variables in the verified model, where empathy predicts aggression in the hostile context, but not in the vulnerable and safe context. In turn, empathy predicts forgiveness in the vulnerable and safe contexts, and aggression predicts forgiveness in the hostile model, but its effect in the vulnerable and safe context is not significant. Furthermore, empathy plays a key role in understanding forgiveness, given that it is associated with aggressive behaviors in the hostile contexts, whereas a forgiveness model should be differential in these contexts. Conclusions: The findings of this study provide empirical evidence that supports the importance of implementing strategies to improve empathy-related skills in children and adolescents, from the perspective of peace education and forgiveness. In addition, it was shown that aspects such as family climate, vulnerabilities of risk contexts and culture itself, can determine the development of socioemotional skills that favor forgiveness, empathy, and other interpersonal skills.

RESUMEN

Introduction/Objectives: Willingness to forgive has been studied in different situations, however, there are no published studies in Colombia with indigenous populations and taking into account their worldview. The present research was aimed at examining the willingness to forgive of people from various ethnic minorities in Colombia such as the Embera, Nasa, Pijao and Kaamash-Hu communities and focusing in particular on the Wayuu community. Method: An experimental design was used and a cluster analysis was performed. The sample was composed of 159 indigenous adults (30% male) between the ages of 18 and 76, who were shown a series of scenarios describing a common situation in which an orchard was damaged by domestic animals belonging to a neighbour. Three factors were manipulated in the scenario: the severity of the damage, the level of carelessness of the animals' owner, and the animals' owner's explanations and apologetic behaviour. Results: Cluster analysis yielded five qualitatively different positions: Never forgive under any circumstances (6% of the sample, primarily participants from the Embera community), Depends on apology and neglect (15%), Depends on apology, consequences, and neglect (30%, primarily participants from the Kaamash-Hu community), and Almost always forgive (36%, primarily people from the Wayuu community). Conclusion: Thus, there is a convergence between the results of this study and the anthropological observations of the participating ethnic communities. Forgiveness is closely linked to the cosmovision of each indigenous group.

Equine periodontal disease (EPD) is a painful oral inflammatory syndrome characterized by multifactorial pathogenesis. Although it is well known that bacterial proliferation and consequent gingivitis are caused by the decomposition process of food residues, in hypsodont species, the pathogenetic role and the different bacterial species involved in the progression of EPD must be fully clarified. This study aimed to investigate the association of bacteria, including the complex red bacteria (RCB), with EPD, and to evaluate possible EPD risk factors. Bacterial species, including Treponema denticola, Tannerella forsythia, Porphyromonas gingivalis (belonging to the RCB), Fusobacterium nucleatum, Veilonella parvula, and Prevotella intermedia, were investigated in 125 oral swabs from healthy and EPD-affected horses using real-time multiplex PCR. Subsequently, possible risk factors (i.e., age, gender, and breed of the animals and type of feed used) were evaluated using univariate and multivariate analyses. Tannerella spp. and Treponema spp. were detected in a significantly higher proportion of horses affected by EPD than in healthy animals, although pathogens belonging to RCB were detected in low number of horses. At the same time, none of the investigated pathogens was significantly associated with a particular stage of disease severity. Horses aged older than 20 years were at higher risk of EPD. The high rate of coinfection, statistically associated with EPD, supports the hypothesis that EPD is a complex syndrome characterized by the possible simultaneous involvement of several pathogens and an increased risk depending on the animal's age. Constant oral hygiene is the best prevention to prevent and treat the disease, especially in old animals.

RESUMEN

Under the influence of the health emergency triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, many brands changed their communication strategy and included more or less explicit references to the principles of solidarity and fraternity in their TV commercials to boost the confidence and hope of Italian families during the lockdown. The traditional attitudes of the advertising format, which focused on product characteristics, were relegated to the background in order to reinforce the "brand image" through words, signs, hashtags and music that spread empathetic messages to all those who needed to regain hope and trust in a time of extreme emotional fragility. The objective of this paper is to identify the emotions and brand awareness during the lockdown using text mining techniques by measuring customer sentiment expressed on the Twitter social network. Our proposal starts from an unstructured corpus of 20,982 tweets processed with text data mining techniques to identify patterns and trends in people's posts related to specific hashtags and TV ads produced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The innovations in the brand's advertising among consumers seem to have triggered some sense of appreciation and gratitude, as well as a strong sense of belonging that was not present before, as the TV ads were perceived as a disruptive element in consumers' tweets. Although this effect is clearly documented, in this paper we demonstrate its transitory nature, in the sense that the frequency of occurrence of terms associated with an emotional dimension peaks during the weeks of lockdown, and then gradually decreases.

Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic validity of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in blood banks, based on studies published between 2000 and 2020. Methodology: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of diagnostic tests, using a random-effects model for the sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative likelihood ratio, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), and ROC curve, with 95% confidence intervals. Heterogeneity was assessed with the DerSimonianLaird Q(χ2) statistic and the I2 inconsistency statistic. Uncertainty was assessed using percentage study weights. Results: 15 studies were included. The third-generation ELISA (antibody detection) was applied for 2,992 infected and 4,076 healthy individuals, and the fourth-generation ELISA (simultaneous antigen-antibody detection) was used for 967 infected and 154,264 healthy individuals. Both showed close to 100% sensitivity, but there was an improved specificity in the fourth-generation assays (98% vs. 100%). Both technologies' likelihood ratios, DOR, and ROC curve aptly distinguished between healthy and infected individuals. Conclusion: The third and fourth-generation ELISA were confirmed to have excellent validity and diagnostic utility in blood donors, which is important for HIV control and blood safety policies.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Early aggressive hydration is widely recommended for the management of acute pancreatitis, but evidence for this practice is limited. METHODS: At 18 centers, we randomly assigned patients who presented with acute pancreatitis to receive goal-directed aggressive or moderate resuscitation with lactated Ringer's solution. Aggressive fluid resuscitation consisted of a bolus of 20 ml per kilogram of body weight, followed by 3 ml per kilogram per hour. Moderate fluid resuscitation consisted of a bolus of 10 ml per kilogram in patients with hypovolemia or no bolus in patients with normovolemia, followed by 1.5 ml per kilogram per hour in all patients in this group. Patients were assessed at 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours, and fluid resuscitation was adjusted according to the patient's clinical status. The primary outcome was the development of moderately severe or severe pancreatitis during the hospitalization. The main safety outcome was fluid overload. The planned sample size was 744, with a first planned interim analysis after the enrollment of 248 patients. RESULTS: A total of 249 patients were included in the interim analysis. The trial was halted owing to between-group differences in the safety outcomes without a significant difference in the incidence of moderately severe or severe pancreatitis (22.1% in the aggressive-resuscitation group and 17.3% in the moderate-resuscitation group; adjusted relative risk, 1.30; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.78 to 2.18; P = 0.32). Fluid overload developed in 20.5% of the patients who received aggressive resuscitation and in 6.3% of those who received moderate resuscitation (adjusted relative risk, 2.85; 95% CI, 1.36 to 5.94, P = 0.004). The median duration of hospitalization was 6 days (interquartile range, 4 to 8) in the aggressive-resuscitation group and 5 days (interquartile range, 3 to 7) in the moderate-resuscitation group. CONCLUSIONS: In this randomized trial involving patients with acute pancreatitis, early aggressive fluid resuscitation resulted in a higher incidence of fluid overload without improvement in clinical outcomes. RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In Colombia, a person caught in possession of an illicit substance is not judicially sanctioned as long as the quantity does not exceed the maximum allowable amounts. Given that the public is divided on the appropriateness of this policy, an examination of the various public positions was undertaken. METHOD: A convenience sample of 302 adults were presented with 48 vignettes depicting a situation of everyday life easily recognizable by all in Colombia; that of a male person who is apprehended in the street by the police because he is suspected of illicit trafficking. These vignettes were created by orthogonal variation of four factors: Type of substance, amount of substance, type of charge against the offender, and offender's age. RESULTS: Through cluster analysis, six qualitatively different positions were found. These positions corresponded to three distinct, classical philosophies (a) a libertarian, free-market philosophy - punishment should never be extremely severe because the trade in psychotropic substances is a trade like any other (6%), (b) a moralistic, conservative philosophy - punishment should always be extremely severe except perhaps in certain cases (52%), and (c) a progressive, human rights-inspired philosophy - punishment should always be proportional to the seriousness of the facts (42%). CONCLUSION: Half of Colombian people supported a control policy according to which the use of psychotropic substances is considered profoundly immoral. Most of the other segment of the population express views similar to those of international organizations. It is therefore desirable that legislators rely on progressive international legislation to support domestic policies that are not strictly moralistic and conservative.

RESUMEN

Parental burnout is a unique and context-specific syndrome resulting from a chronic imbalance of risks over resources in the parenting domain. The current research aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Parental Burnout Assessment (PBA) across Spanish-speaking countries with two consecutive studies. In Study 1, we analyzed the data through a bifactor model within an Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling (ESEM) on the pooled sample of participants (N = 1,979) obtaining good fit indices. We then attained measurement invariance across both gender and countries in a set of nested models with gradually increasing parameter constraints. Latent means comparisons across countries showed that among the participants' countries, Chile had the highest parental burnout score, likewise, comparisons across gender evidenced that mothers displayed higher scores than fathers, as shown in previous studies. Reliability coefficients were high. In Study 2 (N = 1,171), we tested the relations between parental burnout and three specific consequences, i.e., escape and suicidal ideations, parental neglect, and parental violence toward one's children. The medium to large associations found provided support for the PBA's predictive validity. Overall, we concluded that the Spanish version of the PBA has good psychometric properties. The results support its relevance for the assessment of parental burnout among Spanish-speaking parents, offering new opportunities for cross-cultural research in the parenting domain.

RESUMEN

Shewanella is a microbial group with high potential to be applied in textile effluents bioremediation due to its ability to use a wide variety of substrates as a final electron acceptor in respiration. The present research aimed to describe a new strain, Shewanella algae 2NE11, a decolorizing bacterium isolated from industrial effluent in Peru. S. algae 2NE11 showed an optimal growth under pH 6-9, temperature between 30-40 °C, and 0-4 % NaCl. It can tolerate high concentrations of NaCl until 10% and low temperatures as 4 °C. It decolorizes azo and anthraquinone dyes with a decolorization rate of 89-97%. We performed next-generation sequencing (Pacific Bioscience®) and achieved its complete genome sequence with a length of 5,030,813bp and a GC content of 52.98%. Genomic characterization revealed the presence of protein-coding genes related to decolorization like azoreductase, dyp-peroxidase, oxidoreductases, and the complete Mtr respiratory pathway. Likewise, we identified other properties such as the presence of metal resistant genes, and genes related to lactate and N-acetylglucosamine metabolism. These results highlight its potential to be applied in the bioremediation of textile effluents and guide future research on decolorization metabolic pathways.

This paper presents the proposal of an empirical ap-proach to ethics derived from a psychological theory of human judgment proposed by Norman Anderson. The main results of three studies carried out in three different countries (Guinea, France, and Colombia) on various problems are presented as an illustration of what this approach can offer. These analyses focused on three deliberately very different problems: (a) the duty to care for infected patients in the event of a pandemic that puts at risk the lives of the health professionals, (b) the acceptability of postmortem reproduction in the specific context of fallen soldiers, and (c) the accept-ability of physicianassisted suicide

Abstract This research aimed to identify social representations and conspicuous consumption practices in dog owners in the city of Bogotá, Colombia. The sample included 96 men and women over the age of 18. A mixed study was carried out including first, a qualitative phase in which the social representations of dogs' owners - both creole and breed- were explored, as well as the meanings attributed to conspicuous consumption practices. Secondly, in the quantitative phase, descriptive analyses were carried out and thus the structure of social representations was confirmed. The results showed that the affective value of both the creole and breed dogs was acknowledged and that the creole dog is associated with conditions of vulnerability and regarded as an all-terrain dog, whereas breed dogs imply care and economic investment and are identified as "visible" dogs in society. It is discussed how social representations about dog ownership, in addition to the affective value, involve exhibition activities, social demonstration, and in turn, social and moral status.

Positive Youth Development (PYD) is an approach that promotes resilience and focuses on youth strengths rather than their weaknesses as done by the traditional deficit-based perspective. Research in Europe and North America show that developmental assets are associated with school success, psychological well-being, and lower health risks among youth and young adults. However, not much research has been done on these associations in Latin American contexts. The purpose of this research study is to assess the association between substance use behaviors, such as drunkenness and the use of illicit drugs, and mental health, together with the mediating role of developmental assets representing youth strengths (e.g., social competence) and contextual resources (e.g., social support at home or school). Cross-national data was collected from Colombian (n = 210; 70.4% females) and Peruvian (n = 349; 66.5% females) 1st year university students. Results shed light on the protective role of developmental assets regarding substance use behaviors and mental well-being. Specifically, the results showed direct negative associations between developmental assets and substance use behaviors and positive associations of developmental assets with mental health indicators. Internal assets appear to be a stronger predictor of social, emotional, and psychological well-being compared to external assets. We did not find any statistical significance in the association of substance use behavior and mental health. We discuss implications regarding research, policy, and practice.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Early traumatic experiences are related to profound and long-lasting negative effects on mental and physical health. Colombia has been involved in a war for the last six decades. Thus, the main objective was to adapt and validate the Early Trauma Inventory Self Report-Short Form in Colombia, as well as assess trauma prevalence in this country. METHOD: For this purpose, a total of 2,080 Colombians participated in this study (57.3% women and 42.4% men). Age ranged from 18 to 77 years old. They answered the 27-item version of the Early Trauma Inventory Self Report-Short Form and a sociodemographic evaluation tool. Web-based sampling was carried out between March 16 and March 30, 2020. RESULTS: Original four factor structure was successfully explored and confirmed here. Reliability indexes were good with alphas ranging from .69 to .93. Items properties were also adequate. Most of the assessed sample suffered trauma in their early stages (99.8%). Gender differences were analyzed observing significant differences. As expected, sexual abuse is more prevalent in women. CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our knowledge, the Colombian population has suffered the highest prevalence of early trauma experiences so far when compared to other countries. Emotional and social implications are discussed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved).

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and validate a patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) in acute pancreatitis (AP) as an endpoint centred on the patient. DESIGN: A PROM instrument (PAtieNt-rePoRted OutcoMe scale in acute pancreatItis, an international proSpEctive cohort study, PAN-PROMISE scale) was designed based on the opinion of patients, professionals and an expert panel. The scale was validated in an international multicentre prospective cohort study, describing the severity of AP and quality of life at 15 days after discharge as the main variables for validation. The COSMIN (COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments) methodology was applied. Both the design and validation stages considered the content and face validity of this new instrument; the metric properties of the different items, reliability (reproducibility and internal consistence), the construct, structural and criterion validity, responsiveness and interpretability of this scale. RESULTS: PAN-PROMISE consists of a seven-item scale based on the symptoms that cause the most discomfort and concern to patients with AP. The validation cohort involved 15 countries, 524 patients. The intensity of symptoms changed from higher values during the first 24 hours to lower values at discharge and 15 days thereafter. Items converged into a unidimensional ordinal scale with good fit indices. Internal consistency and split-half reliability at discharge were adequate. Reproducibility was confirmed using test-retest reliability and comparing the PAN-PROMISE score at discharge and 15 days after discharge. Evidence is also provided for the convergent-discriminant and empirical validity of the scale. CONCLUSION: The PAN-PROMISE scale is a useful tool to be used as an endpoint in clinical trials, and to quantify patient well-being during the hospital admission and follow-up. RESUMEN

This study evaluated the gene expression profile of the human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs) grown on the Biosilicate® /F18 glass (BioS-2P/F18) scaffolds. hASCs were cultured using the osteogenic medium (control), the scaffolds, and their ionic extract. We observed that ALP activity was higher in hASCs grown on the BioS-2P/F18 scaffolds than in hASCs cultured with the ionic extract or the osteogenic medium on day 14. Moreover, the dissolution product group and the control exhibited deposited calcium, which peaked on day 21. Gene expression profiles of cell cultured using the BioS-2P/F18 scaffolds and their extract were evaluated in vitro using the RT2 Profiler polymerase chain reaction (PCR) microarray on day 21. Mineralizing tissue-associated proteins, differentiation factors, and extracellular matrix enzyme expressions were measured using quantitative PCR. The gene expression of different proteins involved in osteoblast differentiation was significantly up-regulated in hASCs grown on the scaffolds, especially BMP1, BMP2, SPP1, BMPR1B, ITGA1, ITGA2, ITGB1, SMAD1, and SMAD2, showing that both the composition and topographic features of the biomaterial could stimulate osteogenesis. This study demonstrated that gene expression of hASCs grown on the scaffold surface showed significantly increased gene expression related to hASCs cultured with the ionic extract or the osteogenic medium, evidencing that the BioS-2P/F18 scaffolds have a substantial effect on cellular behavior of hASCs.

Abstract Cervical cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer in women, with the human papillomavirus (HPV) being its major risk factor. This virus also produces other types of cancer and infections that affect men and women. The HPV vaccine has shown efficacy and safety in its prevention, however, barriers have been evident that decrease its acceptance in communities. The objective of this study is to identify the most effective strategies in community intervention to improve the acceptability of HPV vaccination. A systematic review was conducted in Cochrane, Scopus, Embase, Medline, and Google Scholar from June to July 2019, without time constraints, in English and Spanish. We included clinical trials evaluating strategies to improve HPV vaccination. We reviewed 22 studies evaluating community intervention strategies, and identified mainly three: the use of virtual information and training, involvement of parents and/or caregivers as well as health personnel, and involvement of men and people of diverse sexual orientation as a target population.

Obesity corresponds to the abnormal accumulation of fat, negative situations for health. In childhood, it is an important risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, etc. In Chile, its prevalence has increased over the years reaching 24.4% in children of the first basic year in 2018. Studies indicate that the discrimination of the maternal perception of the child's body image could be a risk factor for the development of childhood obesity that depends on the eating habits that the child acquires. The society and culture in which the individual develops also plays a fundamental role. The objective of the study was to analyze the maternal perception of the body image on the real nutritional status of the child with special educational needs. The research has an observational and transversal design. The study was conducted in 60 students between 5 and 6 years old belonging to 5 special education establishments in the city of Arica. A questionnaire was applied to the mothers about their perception of the nutritional status of their children through silhouettes and concepts, then weight and height were evaluated in schoolchildren. A prevalence of 38.3% of excess malnutrition was observed in the sample of schoolchildren with special educational needs. In addition, it is highlighted that 71.7% of the mothers were able to recognize the concept that corresponds to the actual nutritional status of their child, while 46.6% identified it through the use of silhouettes. We concluded that mothers with an altered maternal perception of the nutritional status of schoolchildren show a tendency to perceive their child as overweight or obese when it is in the normal category.
