RESUMEN

Predation by Engytatus varians (Distant) adults on different development stages of the prey species Bactericera cockerelli (Sulcer) (egg, second, and third nymphal instars), Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) and Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (egg, first, and second larval instars) was evaluated using tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) leaflets or plants. These insects are the primary pest of several agriculturally important crops. The influence of E. varians age on the predation capacity was also analysed. Engytatus varians females consumed significantly more B. cockerelli eggs and nymphs than males. Additionally, female predators consumed significantly more second than third instar prey at two predator ages, while males consumed significantly more the second instar than third instar prey at all predator ages. In most of the cases, females also consumed significantly more S. exigua and S. frugiperda eggs than males; however, in terms of larvae consumption, this difference was observed only in some predator ages. Females consumed more the first than second instar S. exigua than males, whereas this behaviour was only observed in males when the predators were 15 and 17 days old. No significant differences were observed in the consumption of first and second instar of S. frugiperda for both sexes of the predators. Predator age did not cause any systematic effects on the predation rates of any prey species. Based on these results, we confirmed that E. varians has potential as a biological control agent for B. cockerelli and also for the Spodoptera species bioassayed.

RESUMEN

The Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs and the Autonomous Governments of Spain have designed and agreed by consensus with the sanitary professionals and major employer's organizations and Unions a Integral Health Surveillance Programme of asbestos-exposed workers, in order to assure appropriate, uniform and harmonized action throughout the national territory with relation to these workers. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This initiative started from the Occupational Health Working group of the Interterritorial Council, with inputs from the Asbestos Working Group of the National Occupational Safety and Health Commission. It was agreed with occupational medicine and infirmary professionals and was approved by the Health and Labour authorities. The program is organised in seven main activities. CURRENT PROGRAM STATUS: two years after the Programme approval a total of 5778 workers are included in the Registry of asbestos-exposed workers. 208 workers have COPD, 198 benign pleural disease, 8 lung cancer, 10 mesothelioma and 7 workers have other cancers possibly related to asbestos (gastric, larynx and colon cancer). REMARKS: the agreement and participation reached in this Programme allow achieving much higher coverage of occupational prevention policies than those obtained with a mere law approval, as we could see during the second year of implementation of the Programme in which the number of attended workers has doubled.

El Ministerio de Sanidad y Consumo y las Comunidades Autónomashan diseñado y consensuado con los profesionales sanitariosy las organizaciones empresariales y sindicales representativas unPlan Integral de Vigilancia de la Salud de los Trabajadores que hanestado expuestos a Amianto, con el objetivo de garantizar una intervenciónadecuada, uniforme y armonizada de estos trabajadores entodo el territorio nacional. La elaboración del Programa partió delGrupo de Trabajo de Salud Laboral del Consejo Interterritorial, seenriqueció con las aportaciones del Grupo de Trabajo Amianto de laComisión Nacional de Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo, fue consensuadocon los profesionales de la medicina y enfermería del trabajo,y fue aprobado por las autoridades sanitarias y laborales. El Programaconsta de siete grandes bloques de actividades. Dos años despuésde aprobado el Programa, el estado de implantación en las ComunidadesAutónomas es desigual. Las principales dificultades para supuesta en marcha se encuentran en la elaboración del Registro deexpuestos. RESUMEN

We have evaluated the production of PRL by human peripheral mononuclear cells (PBMNC) from normal subjects and patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Conditioned medium prepared from basal and Con-A-stimulated PBMNC was assessed for the presence of PRL-like by its ability to stimulate growth of PRL-responsive Nb2 rat lymphoma cells. In the presence or absence of Con-A, SLE PBMNC secrete significantly higher (P < 0.001) amounts of bioactive PRL-like species than normal cells. Growth of Nb2 cells by conditioned medium was inhibited with specific antiserum to human PRL. Western blotting using a polyclonal antibody to human PRL revealed a single 60-kDa PRL-like species in both normal and SLE PBMNC extracts, the immunoreactivity of which was preferentially found in SLE subjects. With the use of reverse transcription-PCR an expected 633-bp band was observed, and its similarity to pituitary PRL was further confirmed by Southern blot analysis with human PRL complementary DNA as a probe. We conclude that a high molecular mass PRL-like species is synthesized and secreted by PBMNC, and patients with SLE have an increased secretion of lymphocyte-derived PRL-like material.

RESUMEN

O.S.A.L.A.N.-Instituto Vasco de Seguridad y Salud Laborales is an autonomous administrative body depending on the Basque Government, ascribed to the Dept. of Justice, Economy, Work and Social Security, which is in charge of managing the general occupational health policies in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country. Its objectives are: To promote an ongoing improvement in safety and occupational health for all the workers in the Basque Autonomous Region, through the management of programmes in matters affecting safety, hygiene, the environment and occupational health. To co-ordinate and concentrate the different activities related to occupational health, unifying and giving coherence to the functions which were previously the jurisdiction of different departments. Making companies aware of national and E.U. regulations, taking the measures that are set out by the European Directives and the Prevention of Occupational Hazards Act and the rest of the employment regulations, establishing the training and information channels required for promoting and applying these in the companies. It acts: from an overall perspective as regards the prevention of occupational hazards, thanks to co-ordination with all the disciplines involved, applying a multi-disciplinary treatment to the study of each and every one of the occupational hazard factors, which is aimed at the prevention of risks at their source. Providing companies with the ideal means for managing the safety and health of their workers. Promoting the implementation of systems which guarantee an ongoing improvement in occupational safety and health in the companies of the Basque Autonomous Region. Providing the technical and research support that makes it possible to tackle prevention efficiently. The provision established in the Creation Act (O.S.A.L.A.N.) should also be mentioned, as regards its application in public administration and the field of social economy, which was later endorsed and ratified through inclusion in the recent Prevention of Occupational Hazards Act.
