RESUMEN

Objectives: The vast majority of studies on aging, cognition, and dementia focus on non-Hispanic white subjects. This paper adds to the extant literature by providing insight into the African American aging experience. Here we describe the study design and baseline characteristics of the African American Dementia and Aging Project (AADAPt) study, which is exploring aging and cognition in African American older adults in Oregon. Methods: African American older adults (n=177) participated in AADAPt, a longitudinal study that collected data on cognitive, physical, and social functioning in annual visits since 2000. Results: AADAPt participants had risk factors for developing dementia in future, such as hypertension and hyperlipidemia, but also reported protective factors such as high social engagement. Conclusions: The AADAPt project offers new insights into aging in older African Americans that includes data on cognition, social engagement, and physical health, which are crucial for understanding the experience of under-represented groups and making future studies more inclusive. Clinical Implications: These findings reflect a window of time for a geographically-focused cohort, and the lessons learned from this study likely have broader implications for shaping the health of these older African American adults.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Two exploratory 6-month pilots of triadic walking with culturally celebratory social reminiscence in gentrifying neighborhoods tested feasibility and health impact among normal and mildly cognitively impaired (MCI) older Black adults. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Fourteen triads walked 1-mile 3x/week, using a navigational application with image-based reminiscence prompts. Focus groups evaluated perceived health impact and experience. Primary outcome measures were program evaluations (feasibility), pre-post self-report health, Montreal Cognitive Assessment, blood pressure, and weight. Analysis used mean rank scores for program evaluations, pre-post paired t-tests for health outcomes, and thematic coding for 30 focus groups. RESULTS: Feasibility: Retention was 74% and 86% for pilots, and 92%, respectively, were "extremely likely" to recommend to friends/family. Mean rank scores indicated appropriate pace and dose, effective conversational prompts, and program readiness with minor changes. Health impact: Self-rated health, mood, activity levels, and energy improved, days feeling downhearted decreased, and days feeling calm/peaceful were maintained or improved. Among Cohort 2, cognitive assessment scores were maintained or improved for 67%; for MCI, 76% had mean improvement of 2.4 (p=.045). Blood pressure and weight decreased for 78% and 44% respectively. Focus groups: Perceived impact of triadic walking included increased physical and social activity outside the program, increased awareness of cognitive decline risk and personal agency, and deep-seated sense of community connection. DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Triadic walking provides structure, accountability, connection, and purpose, motivating sustained engagement. Walking programs that center socialization, particularly within culturally meaningful contexts, may be more effective among older Black adults.

OBJECTIVES: Behavioral symptoms and communication challenges are particularly apparent in frontotemporal degenerative (FTD) dementias. There is a paucity of psychoeducation programming specifically tailored to the needs of families with FTD. We revised an existing intervention to meet the needs of these families. METHODS: We used a quasi-experimental approach. In Phase 1, we sought consumer input about an existing intervention. In Phase 2, we modified the intervention based on the qualitative findings from Phase 1 and tested the revised intervention (STELLA-FTD) for feasibility, acceptability and early-stage efficacy. Outcome for Phase 2 included feasibility data and care partner reactivity to upsetting behaviors. Secondary outcomes included data from unobtrusive sleep monitoring. An inductive analysis of transcripts from the Phase 2 STELLA-FTD focus group provides guidance for future revisions. RESULTS: Fifteen family care partners participated in the Phase 1 focus groups; sixteen care partners enrolled in Phase 2. Testing in Phase 2 revealed that the care partners found our consumer-informed revised intervention both feasible and acceptable. The post-intervention findings suggest STELLA-FTD has the potential to reduce care partner reactivity to upsetting behaviors and to decrease care partner burden. Sleep did not change over the 8-week intervention. CONCLUSIONS: The revised STELLA-FTD intervention was found to be feasible and acceptable, and has potential to improve care partner burden for families living with FTD. Providing the intervention via telehealth maximized access and engaged rehabilitation specialists in providing disease management content. Future revisions will include examination of efficacy and mechanism of action (OHSU IRB # 00022721, ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05338710).

BACKGROUND: Outcome measures available for use in Alzheimer's disease (AD) clinical trials are limited in ability to detect gradual changes. Measures of everyday function and cognition assessed unobtrusively at home using embedded sensing and computing generated "digital biomarkers" (DBs) have been shown to be ecologically valid and to improve efficiency of clinical trials. However, DBs have not been assessed for their relationship to AD neuropathology. OBJECTIVES: The goal of the current study is to perform an exploratory examination of possible associations between DBs and AD neuropathology in an initially cognitively intact community-based cohort. METHODS: Participants included in this study were ≥65 years of age, living independently, of average health for age, and followed until death. Algorithms, run on the continuously-collected passive sensor data, generated daily metrics for each DB: cognitive function, mobility, socialization, and sleep. Fixed postmortem brains were evaluated for neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) and neuritic plaque (NP) pathology and staged by Braak and CERAD systems in the context of the "ABC" assessment of AD-associated changes. RESULTS: The analysis included a total of 41 participants (M±SD age at death = 92.2±5.1 years). The four DBs showed consistent patterns relative to both Braak stage and NP score severity. Greater NP severity was correlated with the DB composite and reduced walking speed. Braak stage was associated with reduced computer use time and increased total time in bed. DISCUSSION: This study provides the first data showing correlations between DBs and neuropathological markers in an aging cohort. The findings suggest continuous, home-based DBs may hold potential to serve as behavioral proxies that index neurodegenerative processes.

(1) Background: The development of assistive technologies has become a key solution to reduce caregiver burden. The objective of this study was to survey caregivers on perceptions and beliefs about the future of modern technology in caregiving. (2) Methods: Demographics and clinical caregiver characteristics were collected via an online survey along with the perceptions and willingness to adopt technologies to support caregiving. Comparisons were made between those who considered themselves caregivers and those who never did. (3) Results: 398 responses (mean age 65) were analyzed. Health and caregiving status of the respondents (e.g., schedule of care) and of the care recipient were described. The perceptions and willingness to use technologies were generally positive without significant differences between those who ever considered themselves as caregivers and those who never did. The most valued features were the monitoring of falls (81%), medication use (78%), and changes in physical functioning (73%). For caregiving support, the greatest endorsements were reported for one-on-one options with similar scores for both online and in-person alternatives. Important concerns were expressed about privacy, obtrusiveness, and technological maturity. (4) Conclusions: Online surveys as a source of health information on caregiving may be an effective guide in developing care-assisting technologies receiving end users' feedback. Caregiver experience, whether positive or negative, was correlated to health habits such as alcohol use or sleep. This study provides insight on caregivers' needs and perceptions regarding caregiving according to their socio-demographic and health status.

ObjectiveThe Survey for Memory, Attention, and Reaction Time (SMART) was recently introduced as a brief (<5 min), self-administered, web-based measure of cognitive performance in older adults. The purpose of this study was threefold: (1) to develop preliminary norms on the SMART; (2) to examine the relationship between demographic variables (i.e. age, sex, education), device type used, and SMART performance; and (3) to assess user attitudes of the SMART. Method A sample of 1,050 community-dwelling adults (M age =59.5 (15.2), M education = 16.5 (2.1), 67.1% female, 96% white) was recruited from an ongoing web-based research cohort. Participants completed the SMART, which consists of four face-valid cognitive tasks assessing visual memory, attention/processing speed, and executive functioning. SMART performance outcome metrics were subtest completion time (CT), click count, and total CT. Participants provided demographic information and completed a survey of user attitudes toward the SMART (i.e. usability, acceptability). Results Older age was the only demographic variable associated with slower SMART total CT (r = .60, p <.001). Education was not associated with SMART CT or click counts overall (p > .05). Male sex was generally associated with longer SMART CT (p < .001, partial eta squared = .14) on all sub-tests. Regarding acceptability, 97.3% indicated willingness to take the SMART again, with more than half willing to complete it on a weekly basis. Conclusion The preliminary normative data on the SMART indicates that it is a feasible and well-accepted web-based cognitive assessment tool that can be administered on multiple device platforms.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to examine the impact of COVID-19 pandemic-related stay-at-home orders on weekly reports of mood and activity before and during COVID-19 in a sample of older Veterans and their cohabitants. METHODS: Urban and rural Veterans and their cohabitants living in the Pacific Northwest ≥62 years old were enrolled as part of the Collaborative Aging Research Using Technology initiative (n = 100, age = 71.2 ± 6.5, 41% women). Participants reported frequency of social activities (e.g., travel away), physical illness, and mood (blue mood and loneliness) via weekly online health forms. RESULTS: A total of 2,441 weekly online health forms (OHFs) were collected from 100 participants. During the COVID-19 pandemic, blue mood (OR = 4.4, p < .0001) and loneliness (OR = 7.2, p < .0001) were significantly higher than before the pandemic, and travel away from home was significantly lower (OR = 0.5, p < .0001). Prevalence of blue mood and loneliness were not associated with rurality. CONCLUSIONS: The current study established that blue mood and loneliness were significantly more prevalent in older Veterans following COVID-19 stay-at-home orders regardless of rurality. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic associated health precautions, while necessary to curb acute health risks, have created a unique situation that places vulnerable populations at increased risk of low mood.

Introduction: During the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person research study visits were moved to an online format using a variety of communication platforms (e.g., Webex and Zoom). Increased technology use among older adults allowed for greater insight regarding the remote research study visit format. Methods: A survey developed by the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC) was distributed among 12 Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers (ADRCs). The COVID-19 Technology Accessibility Survey aimed to understand preferences of older adults regarding their research study visits and how they accessed the internet. Results: Among 12 ADRCs, 2070 responses were received (mean age: 72.8 years [standard deviation (SD) = 10.4], mean education: 16.6 years [SD = 2.6], race/ethnicity: 85% White/non-Hispanic). Among respondents, those with some form of cognitive impairment were more likely to prefer remote research study visits (mild cognitive impairment [MCI] vs. normal [odds ratio (OR) = 1.40, P = 0.02] and dementia vs. normal [OR = 1.48, P < 0.01]). Respondents with cognitive impairment were also less likely to have interest in smartphone use during at-home study visits (MCI vs. normal [OR = 0.71, P = 0.02] and dementia vs. normal [OR = 0.63, P < 0.001]). Results were similar regarding tablet use (MCI vs. normal [OR = 0.73, P = 0.04] and dementia vs. normal [OR = 0.72, P = 0.01]). Geographical location was analyzed in terms of the percentage of respondents in each region who preferred remote research study visits: West, 51%; Midwest, 34%; South, 41%; and Northeast, 57% (P < 0.0001). Discussion: Results from the study suggest that there is a growing interest in the remote research study visit format. Further studies will allow for greater understanding and development of this research format.

Studies find that older adults want control over how technologies are used in their care, but how it can be operationalized through design remains to be clarified. We present findings from a large survey (n=825) of a well-characterized U.S. online cohort that provides actionable evidence of the importance of designing for control over monitoring technologies. This uniquely large, age-diverse sample allows us to compare needs across age and other characteristics with insights about future users and current older adults (n=496 >64), including those concerned about their own memory loss (n=201). All five control options, which are not currently enabled, were very or extremely important to most people across age. Findings indicate that comfort with a range of care technologies is contingent on having privacy- and other control-enabling options. We discuss opportunities for design to meet these user needs that demand course correction through attentive, creative work.

Introduction: Impairment in financial capacity places older adults at risk of fraud or abuse and can be a harbinger of loss of independence. Online automated monitoring of financial transactions offers an objective, unobtrusive, and continuous data collection strategy to minimize risk and to detect early changes in an important complex activity of daily living. Methods: Ninety-three participants used an online financial activity monitoring platform that extracted metrics related to use and potential departures from established patterns of financial behavior. Standard neuropsychological assessments and a performance-based measure of financial capacity at baseline were compared using continuous monitoring metrics. Results: Participants demonstrated a willingness to engage with an online financial activity monitoring system. Online metrics were not associated with performance in specific cognitive domains. Performance on an established test of financial capacity was negatively correlated with a ratio of alerts to transactions, that is, a higher likelihood of errors or deviations from previous activity. Discussion: To our knowledge, this is the first reported study using secure online technology to link ongoing unobtrusively collected financial activity monitoring data with other objective measures of function and cognition in a cohort of independent living older adults.

Seasonal variation in rest-activity patterns has been observed in healthy adult populations. This study examined seasonal variation in total time spent overnight in the bedroom by cognitively intact older adults and older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). We hypothesize that seasonal variation in rest-activity patterns is observed in the cognitively intact group and that this variation is disturbed in those with MCI. Study participants were 128 older adults; mean age 85.2 years. Ninety-eight were cognitively intact, and 30 had been diagnosed with MCI. All were enrolled in an ongoing longitudinal study using in-home passive monitoring technology. Infrared presence sensors were placed throughout each participant's home to monitor movement and presence in each room of the home. Activity data was collected from the sensors over a period of up to 527 days. Overnight time in bedroom was found to vary seasonally for the cognitively intact group, with longer times spent overnight in the bedroom during the winter months. This seasonal variation was not observed for those with non-amnestic MCI. MCI is associated with an attenuation of seasonal variation in total time spent in the bedroom at night. Detection of changes in infradian sleep patterns may be an early marker of cognitive decline. Which key determinants are driving these disturbed rhythms, such as features intrinsic to changes in the brain or to environmental factors or external cues, remains an important question for ongoing and future studies.

BACKGROUND: α-klotho might play a role in neurodegenerative diseases. OBJECTIVE: To determine levels of α-klotho and apoE in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples and their relationship with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR). METHODS: All subjects were between age 39 to 83+ (n = 94). CDR and MMSE were administered to all participants. CSF was collected in the early afternoon by lumbar puncture. RESULTS: Serum and CSF levels of α-klotho are positively correlated and both predict scores on the MMSE and CDR, regardless of sex or apoE4 status. CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrate that α-klotho may be an important biomarker of cognitive health and neurodegeneration, and that relatively non-invasive sampling of α-klotho from serum is likely highly reflective of CSF levels.

Dementia affects one in ten adults over age 65. Paradoxically, dementia (e.g., Alzheimer's disease and related dementias) is underdiagnosed, with approximately 50% of those with dementia lacking a formal diagnosis. This limits options for care, support and research engagement. To address this gap, we developed and implemented a telehealth-based ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) program, "Dementia 360," to provide education and support for clinicians and allied team members. We assessed the feasibility and acceptability of this telementoring educational offering and the effect it had on clinician confidence in diagnosing and treating dementia. Clinicians from across Oregon (n = 67) attended learning sessions via videoconferencing technology. The sessions, which focused on dementia diagnosis and treatment, included didactic information provided by experts, followed by case discussions. We assessed clinician acceptability using surveys, and confidence in identifying and treating those with dementia prior to and after Dementia 360 using paired t tests. Dementia 360 was acceptable to clinicians and significantly increased their comfort levels in identifying and treating those with dementia. The technology-based program provided support and instruction that was acceptable by clinicians, even those in frontier areas of the state.

BACKGROUND: The ability to capture people's movement throughout their home is a powerful approach to inform spatiotemporal patterns of routines associated with cognitive impairment. The study estimated indoor room activities over 24 hours and investigated relationships between diurnal activity patterns and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). METHODS: One hundred and sixty-one older adults (26 with MCI) living alone (age = 78.9 ± 9.2) were included from 2 study cohorts-the Oregon Center for Aging & Technology and the Minority Aging Research Study. Indoor room activities were measured by the number of trips made to rooms (bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, living room). Trips made to rooms (transitions) were detected using passive infrared motion sensors fixed on the walls for a month. Latent trajectory models were used to identify distinct diurnal patterns of room activities and characteristics associated with each trajectory. RESULTS: Latent trajectory models identified 2 diurnal patterns of bathroom usage (high and low usage). Participants with MCI were more likely to be in the high bathroom usage group that exhibited more trips to the bathroom than the low-usage group (odds ratio [OR] = 4.1, 95% CI [1.3-13.5], p = .02). For kitchen activity, 2 diurnal patterns were identified (high and low activity). Participants with MCI were more likely to be in the high kitchen activity group that exhibited more transitions to the kitchen throughout the day and night than the low kitchen activity group (OR = 3.2, 95% CI [1.1-9.1], p = .03). CONCLUSIONS: The linkage between bathroom and kitchen activities with MCI may be the result of biological, health, and environmental factors in play. In-home, real-time unobtrusive-sensing offers a novel way of delineating cognitive health with chronologically-ordered movement across indoor locations.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to examine the unique contributions of age to objectively measure driving frequency and dangerous driving behaviors in healthy older adults after adjusting for executive function (EF). METHOD: A total of 28 community-dwelling older adults (mean age = 82.0 years, standard deviation [SD] = 7.5) without dementia who were in good physical health and enrolled in a longitudinal aging study completed several EF and clinical self-report measures at baseline. Participants subsequently had a sensor installed in their vehicle for a mean of 208 (SD = 38, range = 127-257) days. RESULTS: Participants drove for an average of 54 min per day. Mixed-effects models indicated that after controlling for EF, older age was associated with less time driving per day, decreased number of trips, and less nighttime driving. Age was not associated with hard brakes or hard accelerations. DISCUSSION: After accounting for EF, greater age is associated with higher driving self-regulation but not dangerous driving behaviors in healthy older adults. Future studies should recruit larger samples and collect sensor-measured driving data over a more extended time frame to better determine how and why these self-regulation changes take place.

In-home assessment of everyday activities over many months to years may be useful in predicting cognitive decline in older adulthood. This study examined whether a comparatively brief data collection period (3 months) may yield similar diagnostic information. A total of 91 community-dwelling older adults without dementia underwent baseline neuropsychological testing and completed weekly computer-based surveys assessing health-related events/activities. A subset of participants wore fitness tracker watches assessing daily sleep and physical activity patterns, used a sensor-instrumented pillbox, and had their computer use frequency recorded on a daily basis. Similar patterns in computer use, sleep and medication use were noted in comparison to prior literature with more extensive data collection periods. Greater computer use and sleep, as well as self-reported pain and independence, were also linked to better cognition. These activities and symptoms may be useful correlates of cognitive function even when assessed over a relatively brief monitoring period.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) global outbreak allowed a natural experiment to observe how older adults changed social patterns and how it affected their emotional well-being. We studied the frequency and modes of social contact and their effects on older adults' mood before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN: Phone-based surveys were administered weekly before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. SETTING: Participants were recruited from Portland, Oregon, and Detroit, Michigan. PARTICIPANTS: Older adults ≥75 years old (n = 155, age = 81.0 ± 4.5, 72.3% women) were included in a randomized controlled trial, the Internet-Based Conversational Engagement Clinical Trial (I-CONECT). MEASUREMENTS: Low mood was self-reported as feeling downhearted or blue for three or more days in the past week. Social contact was self-reported by the amount of time spent in interactions, with whom (family, friends, others), and via which modes (in-person, phone/video call, text/email/letter). RESULTS: A total of 5525 weeks of data were derived from 155 participants. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, average social interaction time spent in-person, on phone/video call, and via text/email/letter was 406, 141, and 68 min/week, respectively. During the COVID-19 pandemic, time spent in-person was reduced by 135 min/week, while time spent via phone/video call and writing increased by 33 and 26 mins/week, respectively. In-person family contact was associated with less low mood regardless of the pandemic (odds ratio = 0.92, p < 0.05). There was a COVID-19 × text/email/letter with friends interaction (odds ratio = 0.77, p = 0.03), suggesting that during the COVID-19 pandemic, an increase of 1 h of writing with friends per week was associated with a 23% decrease in the likelihood of experiencing low mood. CONCLUSION: The lost in-person time relating to COVID-19 restrictions tended to be partially compensated for with increased calls and writing time, although overall social interaction time decreased. During the COVID-19 pandemic, at least two types of social interactions (writing to friends and in-person family time) showed promise for mitigating low mood for older adults with limited social resources.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation is a risk factor for dementia, but the underlying mechanism is not well understood. It is possible that lack of social contacts negatively affects emotional well-being, which leads to cognitive decline. To shed light on this potential mediation mechanism, we examined changes in type and frequency of social contacts and their effects on mood using data collected before and during the COVID-19 pandemic among socially isolated older adults aged 75 and older. METHOD: The data come from an ongoing randomized controlled trial, the Internet-Based Conversational Engagement Clinical Trial (I-CONECT, ClinicalTirals.gov: NCT02871921). One hundred forty-six participants (age=81.0±4.5, 71.9% women) who were in the trial both before and during the pandemic and whose data were available as of November of 2020 were included in the current analysis. Weekly health questionnaires administered on all participants regardless of treatment assignments were collected before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Low mood ("Blueness") was self-reported as feeling downhearted or blue for three or more days in the past week (YES/NO). Social contacts were self-reported by amount of time they had interacted, with whom (family; friends; others), and via which modalities (in-person; phone/video call; text/email). RESULT: A total of 4,774 weeks of survey data were analyzed (3,047 before COVID 19). The weekly average time spent in-person, on phone/video call, and via text/email were 282, 113, and 44 minutes, respectively. During the COVID-19 pandemic, participants on average spent 82 minutes less in total social contact per week (in-person: reduced 123 minutes, video/call: increased 28 minutes, text/email: increased 13 minutes per week). Generalized estimating equation model revealed that in-person family contact was associated with less blueness regardless of the pandemic (OR=0.91, p=0.04). There was a COVID*text/email time with friends interaction (OR=0.68, p=0.03), suggesting that during the COVID-19 pandemic, an increase of 1 hour of texting/emailing with friends per week was associated with 32% decrease in experiencing blueness three or more days per week. CONCLUSION: In-person family time is beneficial for mental health. While in-person contacts become less frequent during the COVID-19 pandemic, increased text/email time with friends becomes an alternative to maintain mental health for socially isolated older adults.

Background: Older adults spend a considerable amount of time inside their residences; however, most research investigates out-of-home mobility and its health correlates. We measured indoor mobility using room-to-room transitions, tested their psychometric properties, and correlated indoor mobility with cognitive and functional status. Materials and Methods: Community-dwelling older adults living alone (n = 139; age = 78.1 ± 8.6 years) from the Oregon Center for Aging & Technology (ORCATECH) and Minority Aging Research Study (MARS) were included in the study. Two indoor mobility features were developed using non-parametric parameters (frequency; stability): Indoor mobility frequency (room-to-room transitions/day) was detected using passive infrared (PIR) motion sensors fixed on the walls in four geographic locations (bathroom; bedroom; kitchen; living room) and using door contact sensors attached to the egress door in the entrance. Indoor mobility stability was estimated by variances of number of room-to-room transitions over a week. Test-retest reliability (Intra-class coefficient, ICC) and the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) defined as the standard error of measurement (SEM) were generated. Generalized estimating equations models related mobility features with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and functional status (gait speed). Results: An average of 206 days (±127) of sensor data were analyzed per individual. Indoor mobility frequency and stability showed good to excellent test-retest reliability (ICCs = 0.91[0.88-0.94]; 0.59[0.48-0.70]). The MCIDs of mobility frequency and mobility stability were 18 and 0.09, respectively. On average, a higher indoor mobility frequency was associated with faster gait speed (ß = 0.53, p = 0.04), suggesting an increase of 5.3 room-to-room transitions per day was associated with an increase of 10 cm/s gait speed. A decrease in mobility stability was associated with MCI (ß = -0.04, p = 0.03). Discussion: Mobility frequency and stability in the home are clinically meaningful and reliable features. Pervasive-sensing systems deployed in homes can objectively reveal cognitive and functional status in older adults who live alone.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has limited older adults' access to in-person medical care, including screenings for cognitive and functional decline. Remote, technology-based tools have shown recent promise in assessing changes in older adults' daily activities and mood, which may serve as indicators of underlying health-related changes (e.g., cognitive decline). This study examined changes in older adults' driving, computer use, mood, and travel events prior to and following the COVID-19 emergency declaration using unobtrusive monitoring technologies and remote online surveys. As an exploratory aim, the impact of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) on these changes was assessed. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Participants were 59 older adults (41 cognitively intact and 18 MCI) enrolled in a longitudinal aging study. Participants had their driving and computer use behaviors recorded over a 5-month period (75 days pre- and 76 days post-COVID emergency declaration) using unobtrusive technologies. Measures of mood, overnight guests, and frequency of overnight travel were also collected weekly via remote online survey. RESULTS: After adjusting for age, gender, and education, participants showed a significant decrease in daily driving distance, number of driving trips, highway driving, and nighttime driving, post-COVID-19 as compared to pre-COVID-19 (p < .001) based on generalized estimating equation models. Further, participants spent more time on the computer per day post-COVID-19 (p = .03). Participants endorsed increases in blue mood (p < .01) and loneliness (p < .001) and decreases in travel away from home and overnight visitors (p < .001) from pre- to post-COVID-19. Cognitive status did not impact these relationships. DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS: From pre- to post-COVID-19 emergency declaration, participants drove and traveled less, used their computer more, had fewer overnight visitors, and reported greater psychological distress. These results highlight the behavioral and psychological effects of stay-at-home orders on older adults who are cognitively intact and those with MCI.
