RESUMEN

Fabrication of magnetic nanocomposites containing iron oxide nanoparticles formed in situ within a phosphorus-containing polymer matrix as well as its structural characterization and its thermal degradation is reported here. Comparative structural studies of the parent polymer and nanocomposites were performed using FTIR spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy. The results confirmed the presence of dispersed iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles in the polymer matrix. The formed composite combines the properties of porous polymer carriers and magnetic particles enabling easy separation and reapplication of such polymeric carriers used in, for example, catalysis or environmental remediation. Studies on thermal degradation of the composites revealed that the process proceeds in three stages while a significant influence of the embedded magnetic particles on that process was observed in the first two stages. Magnetic force microscopy studies revealed that nanocomposites and its calcinated form have strong magnetic properties. The obtained results provide a comprehensive characterization of magnetic nanocomposites and the products of their calcination that are important for their possible applications as sorbents (regeneration conditions, processing temperature, disposal, etc).

RESUMEN

Comprehensive multi-dimensional hyphenation of a thermogravimetry device (i.e. a thermobalance) to gas chromatography and single photon ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TG-GC×SPI-MS) has been used to investigate two crude oil samples of different geographical origin. The source of the applied vacuum ultraviolet radiation is an electron beam pumped rare gas excimer lamp (EBEL). The soft photoionization favors the formation of molecular ions. Introduction of a fast, rapidly modulated gas chromatographic separation step in comparison with solely TG-SPI-MS enables strongly enhanced detection especially with such highly complex organic matrices as crude oil. In contrast with former TG-SPI-MS measurements, separation and identification of overlying substances is possible because of different GC retention times. The specific contribution of isobaric compounds to one mass signal is determined for alkanes, naphthalenes, alkylated benzenes, and other compounds.

RESUMEN

The aim of the work was to study the biodegradation process of biocomposites prepared from renewable resources and the ecotoxicological assessment of their biodegradation products. Biocomposites from modified starch reinforced with various cellulose fibers were prepared by the extrusion process. Biodegradation studies were carried out according to the ISO respirometic method. Ecotoxicity of biodegradation products was assessed by the luminescent bacteria test. It was found that biodegradation of biocomposites was above 60% within 24 days according to the results of respirometric test. Increase in the amount of natural fiber reinforcement, as well as smaller fiber size increased the biodegradability of biocomposites. On the basis of the preliminary results of the ecotoxicological test using luminescent bacteria it seems that the biodegradation products of the biocomposites studied are ecologically safe.

RESUMEN

The thermal degradation of the polyamides (PA) 6, 12, 66 and 612 was investigated by means of thermal analysis/mass spectrometry (TA-MS) and pyrolysis in a german standard oven. Sample masses were about 20 and 40 mg. The heating rates used in the dynamic studies were 1, 5 and 10 K min(-1). Both air and nitrogen atmospheres were utilized. The kinetic parameters were calculated from the TA-MS measurements and the main decomposition products were registered online. The evolved products from the pyrolysis oven were captured and analyzed off-line by GC/MS.

RESUMEN

The results of a laboratory investigation on the leaching behaviour of wood treated with creosote and of untreated wood are reported. A special leaching test derived from the German standard method DEV S4 test (DIN 38414) has been developed. Samples were leached in deionized water, in a solution buffered at pH 4.7 and in a solution of humic substances. The organic fraction of the leachate was extracted using liquid-liquid extraction. The extracts were analysed qualitatively with GC/MSD and quantified with GC/FID. The results were compared with those of Soxhlet-extracts from creosote-treated wood.

RESUMEN

A method for the synthesis of a pure nonylphenol isomer, 4-(3',6'-dimethyl-3-heptyl)phenol, by Friedel-Crafts reaction between anisole and 3-bromo-3,6-dimethylheptane that gives a 47.3% overall yield is reported. The reactions were followed by GC-MS, and the chemical structures are in agreement with the NMR and IR spectra. The log K(ow) value for this compound, its water solubility, vapor pressure, and Henry's Law constant were also determined. These physicochemical properties were required for prediction of the compound's behavior in aquatic ecosystems.

RESUMEN

A method for the simultaneous determination of 22 nitrogen-containing polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (15 azaarenes and seven amino-PAHs) in the gaseous products of the thermal degradation of polymers is described. After desorption and clean-up using cation-exchange chromatography (PRS cartridge) the samples were analyzed by HPLC-FD. The validation was carried out with real nylon 6 combustion samples. The recoveries of the compounds are in the range of 89-99% for the extraction and 91-100% for the clean up procedure. The detection limits ranged from 7 to 160 pg. The high recovery values, due to the quick and efficient clean-up procedure, resulted in low relative standard deviations (with the exception of acridine and 2-aminoanthracene <5%). The applicability of the method is also investigated for the determination of the N-PAHs in a pyrolysis sample.

RESUMEN

A new measuring system for the determination of the vapour pressure of single compounds in mixtures is introduced. A coupling system consisting of a quadrupol mass spectrometer and a vapour pressure balance was used for these measurements. Some calibration measurements and investigations of mixtures are discussed.

RESUMEN

A simultaneous working TA-MS instrument has been used to investigate the thermal behaviour and the decomposition of a series of toxic organic compounds such as flame protected polymers and chlorine-substituted aromatic products that are known to be injurious to health. The temperature-dependent TA-MS data given by the TG, DTG, DTA and MS results lead to a nearly complete description of the degradation properties of the materials. This includes the identification of the main decomposition components by means of in situ quadrupole MS ranging up to 511 a.m.u. The maximum working temperature of the coupling system with 1400 K has proved to be sufficient for the applications reported in this paper. From our investigations of hexa(penta)chlorobenzene and pentachlorophenol it can be concluded that there is a good correlation between the characteristic TA data and the course of the ion current intensities as a function of temperature. This can be shown for each detected mass fragment containing different numbers of chlorine atoms as well as for the molecular ions according to the relative abundance of their isotopes.
