RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The Association of Social Work Boards (2022a) released a report evidencing test-taker demographics as the strongest predictor of professional licensure exam pass-rates. The purpose of this study was to examine statistical predictors of social work professional licensure exam pass rate disparities between first-time Black/African American and White test-takers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study addressed the following research question: To what extent do institutional and state licensure characteristics predict race-based disparities in social work licensure exam pass rates? To answer this question, the authors built a data set in an Excel spreadsheet comprised of institutional and state licensure variables using publicly available and reliable sources. RESULTS: States requiring more clinical supervision hours and imposing higher licensure fees tended to report higher overall pass rates on the ASWB exam. Additionally, a notable correlation was found between states with a higher proportion of Black/African American residents and increased pass rates. Conversely, states that had established a larger number of licensure tiers typically saw lower overall pass rates. Furthermore, it was noted that schools located in the Southern U.S. demonstrated significantly lower ASWB pass rates compared to schools in other regions of the country. DISCUSSION: Recommendations are made regarding future research efforts and professional licensure and regulation standards. CONCLUSION: Pass rate disparities have implications for individual exam-takers and their families; for clients and constituencies; and for social work practice, research, ethics, and education.

One in four older adults has Behavioral Health (BH) concerns, and over 63% are not receiving services. Older adults living in the community depend on the aging network for home- and community-based services and care managers are critical providers in this network. However, most care managers' current education and training are inadequate to care for older adults with BH needs. This study evaluated the effectiveness of training on the perceived self-efficacy of care managers working with older adults with BH needs. The study used a quasi-experimental design with a pre- and post-test approach and convenience sampling (n = 90). We found a significant difference in mean self-efficacy scores, from pre-test (M = 62.31, SD = 10.11) to post-test (M = 65.88, SD = 7.40) related to working with clients with mental health problems. In addition, we found a significant difference between the mean pre-test (M = 59.81, SD = 10.68) and post-test score (M = 65.60, SD = 9.85) related to working with clients with substance use problems.

BACKGROUND: The United Nations has called for wide-scale community mental health psychoeducation; however, few programs currently exist. Emotional Connecting, Empowering, Revitalizing (eCPR) is a community education and training program developed by individuals with a lived experience of mental health challenges or trauma. It is designed to provide community members with skills and confidence to support someone experiencing mental health challenges. OBJECTIVE: This qualitative study aimed to examine the user experiences of diverse community members engaged in eCPR training. This study reviewed their attitudes toward training and opportunities for improvement in future implementations of training. METHODS: eCPR training participants (N=31) were invited to participate in virtual focus groups between June 2020 and July 2020. Data were analyzed using the rigorous and accelerated data reduction method, which converts raw textual data into concise data tables to develop a codebook, and thematic analysis was performed to identify common themes. RESULTS: The themes identified when analyzing the data included emotional holding and containment, training feedback, principles and practices of eCPR, implementation, connection in a digital environment, skills practice, and shared experiences. CONCLUSIONS: eCPR may benefit individuals from multiple, diverse demographics. It can enhance their ability to connect with others to understand what it means to be with someone who is experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis, to accept their own emotions, and to be confident in being their most authentic self in both their work and personal lives. eCPR may answer the call of the United Nations by bringing opportunities for authenticity and healing to community settings. Exploring the effects of delivering eCPR in communities on individuals experiencing distress is an important next step. This study found that eCPR may be beneficial to many groups of trainees with varying backgrounds and experiences. These findings are important, as they speak to the potential for eCPR to be implemented in a variety of community settings with the intention of working to improve mental health in everyday settings.

Adults with serious mental illness commonly experience comorbid chronic physical conditions and experience a reduced life expectancy of 10-25 years compared to the general population (Saha et al. in Arch Gen Psychiatry 64(10):1123-31.  2007; Hayes et al. in Acta Psychiatr Scand 131(6):417-25. 2015; Walker et al. in JAMA Psychiatry 72(4):334-41. 2015). Dimensions of personal recovery may have real-world implications that extend beyond functional and mental health outcomes to impact the self-directed health and wellness of adults with serious mental illness. This study examined the predictive utility of the Recovery Assessment Scale with respect to medical self-efficacy, self-management, psychiatric symptoms, and community functioning for adults with serious mental illness. Data were derived from a secondary analysis of baseline and 10-month data collected from a randomized control trial with adults aged 18 years and older with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, schizophrenia, or major depressive disorder (N=56). A linear regression was conducted to examine the predictive value of total baseline RAS scores on self-efficacy at 10 months while controlling for study group. This model significantly predicted self-efficacy (F (2, 53) = 13.28, p < .001) and accounted for 36.1% of the variance. Total baseline RAS scores significantly predicted self-efficacy (ß = 059, p < .001); specifically, higher baseline RAS scores were associated with greater self-efficacy. A greater degree of recovery may facilitate greater medical self-efficacy in managing chronic disease in people diagnosed with a serious mental illness. Future intervention approaches may consider recovery-focused therapeutic targets such as peer support to promote self-efficacy to manage chronic diseases in people with serious mental illness.

BACKGROUND: Middle-aged and older adults with mental health conditions have a high likelihood of experiencing comorbid physical health conditions, premature nursing home admissions, and early death compared with the general population of adults aged 50 years or above. An emerging workforce of peer support specialists aged 50 years or above or "older adult peer support specialists" is increasingly using technology to deliver peer support services to address both the mental health and physical health needs of middle-aged and older adults with a diagnosis of a serious mental illness. OBJECTIVE: This exploratory qualitative study examined older adult peer support specialists' text message exchanges with middle-aged and older adults with a diagnosis of a serious mental illness and their nonmanualized age-related contributions to a standardized integrated medical and psychiatric self-management intervention. METHODS: Older adult peer support specialists exchanged text messages with middle-aged and older adults with a diagnosis of a serious mental illness as part of a 12-week standardized integrated medical and psychiatric self-management smartphone intervention. Text message exchanges between older adult peer support specialists (n=3) and people with serious mental illnesses (n=8) were examined (mean age 68.8 years, SD 4.9 years). A total of 356 text messages were sent between older adult peer support specialists and service users with a diagnosis of a serious mental illness. Older adult peer support specialists sent text messages to older participants' smartphones between 8 AM and 10 PM on weekdays and weekends. RESULTS: Five themes emerged from text message exchanges related to older adult peer support specialists' age-related contributions to integrated self-management, including (1) using technology to simultaneously manage mental health and physical health issues; (2) realizing new coping skills in late life; (3) sharing roles as parents and grandparents; (4) wisdom; and (5) sharing lived experience of difficulties with normal age-related changes (emerging). CONCLUSIONS: Older adult peer support specialists' lived experience of aging successfully with a mental health challenge may offer an age-related form of peer support that may have implications for promoting successful aging in older adults with a serious mental illness.

RESUMEN

Community of Practice, a community-engagement method that encourages a group of people to interact regularly towards a common goal, may promote satisfying experiences in patient-outcomes research among marginalized populations. Peer support specialists are increasingly being involved in peer-informed mental health research due to their lived experiences of mental illness and are an asset in co-designing healthcare programs along with researchers. In 2015, ten scientists and ten mental health service users joined as a Community of Practice that trained to engage in patient-centered outcomes research. The group has so far has presented at 20 conferences, published three book chapters and 30 peer-reviewed publications, and developed two smartphone applications. Of note are the co-production of a smartphone application, a digital peer support certification program, an app decision support tool, and an instrument to assess the value of patient-research partnerships. Future research will assess the feasibility of incorporating more stakeholders to enhance research outcomes.

Peer support specialists (i.e., lay interventionists representing one of the fastest-growing mental health workforce) are increasingly using technologies to support individuals with mental health challenges between clinical encounters. The use of technology by peers has been significantly increased During COVID-19. Despite the wide array of technologies available, there is no framework designed specifically for peer support specialists and service users to select technologies to support their personal recovery. The objective of the study was to develop a Decision-Support Tool for Peer Support Specialists and Service Users to facilitate shared decision-making when choosing technologies to support personal recovery. The study used an iterative co-production process, including item formulation and a series of group cognitive interviews with peer support specialists and service users (n=9; n=9, n=4). The total sample included 22 participants: peer support specialists (n=18, 81.8%) and service users (n=4, 18.2%). The final version of the Decision-Support Tool for Peer Support Specialists and Service Users (D-SPSS), includes 8 domains: (1) privacy and security; (2) cost; (3) usability; (4) accessibility; (5) inclusion and equity; (6) recovery principles; (7) personalized for service users' needs; and (8) device set-up. Our study found that involving peer support specialists and service users in the design and co-production phase of a decisionsupport tool is feasible and has the potential to empower both peer support specialists and service users, and potentially increase engagement in the use of technologies that support individuals' recovery from traditional clinical encounters.
