Optical coherence microscopy (OCM) visualizes nuclei in live, unlabeled cells. As most cells are uninucleated, the number of nuclei in embryos may serve as a proxy of the cell number, providing important information on developmental status of the embryo. Importantly, no other non-invasive method currently allows for the cell number count in compacted embryos. We addressed the question of whether OCM, by providing the number of nuclei in compacted mouse embryos, may help evaluate embryo quality. We subjected compacted embryonic Day 3 (E3.0: 72 h after onset of insemination) mouse embryos to OCM scanning and correlated nuclei number and developmental potential. Implantation was assessed using an outgrowth assay (in vitro model meant to reflect embryonic ability to implant in vivo). Embryos with more cells at E3.0 (>18 cells) were more likely to reach the blastocyst stage by E4.0 and E5.0 (P ≪ 0.001) and initiate hatching by E5.0 (P < 0.05) than those with fewer cells (<12 cells). Moreover, the number of cells at E3.0 strongly correlated with the total number of cells in E4.0 and E5.0 embryos (ρ = 0.71, P ≪ 0.001 and ρ = 0.61, P ≪ 0.001, respectively), also when only E4.0 and E5.0 blastocysts were considered (ρ = 0.58, P ≪ 0.001 and ρ = 0.56, P ≪ 0.001, respectively). Additionally, we observed a strong correlation between the number of cells at E3.0 and the number of trophectoderm cells in E4.0 and E5.0 blastocysts (ρ = 0.59, P ≪ 0.001 and ρ = 0.57, P ≪ 0.001, respectively). Importantly, embryos that had more cells at E3.0 (>18 cells) were also more likely to implant in vitro than their counterparts with fewer cells (<12 cells; P ≪ 0.001). Finally, we tested the safety of OCM imaging, demonstrating that OCM scanning affected neither the amount of reactive oxygen species nor mitochondrial activity in the embryos. OCM also did not hinder their preimplantation development, ability to implant in vitro, or to develop to term after transfer to recipient females. Our data indicate that OCM imaging provides important information on embryo quality. As the method seems to be safe for embryos, it could be a valuable addition to the current repertoire of embryo evaluation methods. However, our study was conducted only on mouse embryos, so the proposed protocol would require optimization in order to be applied in other species.

In brief: Optical coherence microscopy non-invasively visualizes metaphase II spindles allowing for quantitative analysis of their volume and shape, which may prove useful in the assessment of the oocyte quality. Using a mouse model, we showed also that analysis of spindle length combined with morphokinetics improves the evaluation of the resulting embryos. Abstract: The proper development of embryos strongly depends on the quality of oocytes, so the evaluation of oocytes may be a useful initial step in IVF procedures. Additionally, it enables embryologists to make more informed decisions regarding the treatments chosen for the patients and better manage patients' expectations. Optical coherence microscopy (OCM) allows for non-invasive 3D visualization of intracellular structures, such as spindles or nuclei, which have been linked to the success of embryonic development. Here, we applied a mouse model to examine whether OCM imaging could be used in the quality assessment of metaphase II (MII) oocytes. We showed that quantitative parameters describing the shape and volume of the MII spindle were associated with the quality of the resulting embryos, including the likelihood of blastocyst formation and the embryos' ability to differentiate the trophectoderm and primitive endoderm, but not the epiblast. We also created a multivariate linear regression model, combining OCM-based quantification of MII spindles with morphokinetic analysis of the embryos, that allowed for improved evaluation of the embryo quality. Finally, we proved that OCM does not interfere with the viability of the scanned cells, at least during the preimplantation development. Therefore, we believe that OCM-based quantitative assessment of MII spindles can improve the oocyte and embryo selection in IVF procedures.

(1) Background: Lyme borreliosis (LB) is a tick-borne disease known for its diagnostic challenges. Conventional two-tiered testing (CTTT) for antibodies is time-consuming, has low sensitivity in the early stages of disease, and sometimes generates false-positive IgM immunoblots. To tackle this issue, modified two-tiered testing (MTTT) was introduced, incorporating recombinant VlsE and C6 antigens to enhance diagnostic accuracy. (2) Methods: In this prospective study, we enrolled children exhibiting symptoms indicative of LB. We collected serum samples at various intervals and subjected them to analysis using standard enzyme immunoassays. We then compared these results with the outcomes from the VlsE and C6 assays. (3) Results: In our study, all 33 patients displaying erythema migrans (EM), a characteristic symptom of LB, exhibited positive responses to the C6 antigen. This finding underscores the potential utility of the C6 antigen as a reliable diagnostic tool for LB. Additionally, we observed a significant reduction in anti-VlsE antibody levels following antibiotic treatment in EM patients. (4) Conclusions: The utilization of recombinant VlsE and C6 antigens in LB diagnostics and monitoring has yielded promising results. Nonetheless, it is imperative for clinicians to exercise caution and interpret results in conjunction with clinical findings, considering the dynamic nature of medical guidelines. Even with recombinant antigen tests, some children with EM tested negative, highlighting the importance of clinical diagnosis for treatment decisions. Furthermore, clinicians should be mindful of the possibility of persistently positive VlsE/C6 test results during LB treatment monitoring.

Ovulatory infertility is a serious clinical problem whose direct causes are still largely unknown. In addition to pathologies that make it impossible for a couple to establish a pregnancy, there are a number of other factors that have a bearing on fertility, including lifestyle factors, and particularly diet. Although numerous studies have been performed linking such factors to ovulatory infertility, most of them lack the necessary clinical significance, instead focusing on observational data and suggesting or establishing associative relationships. This article consists of a literature review focusing on connections between lifestyle factors such as diet, physical exercise, oxidative stress, sleep, and supplementation, and ovulatory infertility. Special emphasis was given to issues such as obesity and insulin resistance and their mutual relationship with other factors linked to ovulatory infertility. In addition, based on the conclusions of the literature review, the authors have proposed a classification of relationships between ovulation disorders and lifestyle factors in ovulatory infertility within the framework of the WHO classification of ovulation disorders. Furthermore, areas that merit further research have been indicated as well as those that do not. WHO Group II disorders gained prominence in the results of the study as the number of links with lifestyle factors and ovulatory infertility found in the course of the review greatly exceeded those for Groups I and III. The data presented in the article show that the issues of proper diet and physical exercise are those that could benefit from robust clinical studies focused specifically on ovulation infertility, while studies concerning the relationship between oxidative stress, sleep, and supplementation and ovulatory infertility do not seem to be promising directions as far as clinical significance is concerned.

The sudden outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic posed a great threat to the world's healthcare systems. It resulted in the development of new methods and algorithms for the diagnosis and treatment of both COVID-19 and its complications. Diagnostic imaging played a crucial role in both cases. Among the most widely used examinations are transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and computed tomography angiography (CTA). Cardiovascular complications in COVID-19 are frequently associated with a severe inflammatory response, which results in acute respiratory failure, further leading to severe complications of the cardiovascular system. Our review aims to discuss the value of TTE and CTA in clinical decision making and outcome prediction in patients with COVID-19-associated cardiovascular complications. Our review revealed the high clinical value of various TTE findings and their association with mortality and the prediction of patients' clinical outcomes, especially when used with other laboratory parameters. The strongest association between increased mortality and findings in TTE was observed for tachycardia and decreased left ventricular ejection fraction (odds ratio (OR) 24.06) and tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion/pulmonary artery systolic pressure ratio (TAPSE/PASP ratio) < 0.31 mm/mmHg (OR 17.80). CTA is a valuable tool in diagnosing COVID-19-associated pulmonary embolism, but its association with mortality and its predictive role should always be combined with laboratory findings and patients' medical history. D-dimers > 3000 ng/mL were found as the strongest predictors of pulmonary embolism (PE) (OR 7.494). Our review indicates the necessity for an active search for cardiovascular complications in patients with severe COVID-19, as they are linked with an increased probability of fatal outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to compare the diet of medical and non-medical students in relation to colorectal cancer risk factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 239 students of various universities in Bialystok, Poland. Respondents were divided into four groups: students of dietetics at the Medical University (SD), students of other fields of study at the Medical University (SMUB), students of the University of Technology (SBUT) and students of the University of Bialystok (SUB). The research tool was an anonymous questionnaire in an electronic form, designed by the authors of this paper. RESULTS: Overweight was the least common among students of dietetics. Products that may increase the risk of developing colorectal cancer were most frequently consumed by students of non-medical universities. Everyday consumption of processed meat products was declared by 2.08% of SD, 24.00% of SMUB, 16.13% of SBUT and 25.93% of SUB. Red meat was consumed several times a week or every day by 25% of SD, 25.33% of SMUB, 48.39% of SBUT and 35.19% of SUB. Fast-food meals consumption once or several times a week was confirmed by 4.17% of SD, 18.67% of SMUB, 27.42% of SBUT and 38.89% of SUB. CONCLUSION: The study conducted shows that students expose themselves to colorectal cancer risk factors through their diet.

BACKGROUND: No gold standard has been developed for the therapy of intracanalicular vestibular schwannomas (IVS). Options for treatment include a conservative approach, microsurgery, or radiosurgery. Although the efficacy of these treatment has been well-documented, little is known about the determinants of outcome in IVSs following radiosurgery. Therefore, we examined the results in relation to age, gender, tumor volume, distance to fundus, microcyst existence, and radiosensitivity in this group. In addition, we investigated possible predictors of facial nerve function and hearing preservation. METHODS: Ninety-four patients with unilateral IVS were included in the evaluation (52 women and 42 males). The patients were separated into younger and older age groups based on their median age (55 years). The median IVS volume was 138 mm3, microcysts were identified in 16 tumors, and 63 tumors were adjacent to the fundus. The data were analyzed using Statistica software package ver. 13.3. RESULTS: At final follow-up, a statistically significant decrease in tumor volume and no statistically significant decline in hearing were noted, but no differences between age groups were found. The sex had no effect on overall tumor growth control, facial nerve preservation, or hearing preservation. Localization of IVS close to the fundus and the presence of tumor microcysts had no effect on the control of tumor growth, preservation of hearing, and sparing of facial nerve following radiosurgery. Cochlear dose had no influence on hearing preservation. Higher tumor volume was associated with its pseudoprogression during early follow-up and a greater risk of hearing loss. CONCLUSIONS: Age, sex, tumor volume, proximity to the fundus, and the existence of a microcyst were not predictive of radiosensitivity nor preservation of facial nerve function and hearing, based on the findings. There was no effect of cochlear dose on hearing. Initial greater tumor volume was associated with an increased probability of tumor pseudoprogression.

BACKGROUND This retrospective study from a single center in Poland was undertaken to evaluate the clinical utility of neutrophil-to-platelet ratio in therapy of 35 ulcerative colitis (UC) patients with infliximab or vedolizumab. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study included 35 patients: 16 were treated with infliximab and 19 were treated with vedolizumab. Treatment response was evaluated using partial Mayo score. Treatment response was defined as a reduction of partial Mayo score of ≥3 points followed by a decrease of a minimum of 30% from the baseline, decrease in the rectal bleeding subscore of ≥1, or an absolute rectal bleeding subscore of 0 or 1. During the maintenance period, we diagnosed 13 patients with loss of response (LOR) (5 with infliximab and 8 with vedolizumab). The Mann-Whitney U test was performed to assess differences between the groups. Statistical significance was defined as P<0.05. The median was used to describe the value of the parameter. Analysis of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve with the determination of area under the curve (AUC) was performed for the neutrophil-to-platelet parameter during the induction period. RESULTS The median value of the neutrophil-to-platelet ratio for the treatment response group was lower than in the LOR group (median=13.18 and median=19.49, respectively). Calculation of AUC curve for neutrophil-to-platelet ratio during the induction period showed best sensitivity and specificity for values ≥32.511. There were no other significant findings. CONCLUSIONS Neutrophil-to-platelet ratio might be a promising biomarker of LOR in biologic therapy of UC. However, to fully prove this, further studies are needed.

AIM: The aim of this study is to compare long-term results after using an MCAT (Modified Coronally Advanced Tunnel) with an SCTG (Subepithelial Connective Tissue Graft) or an MCAT with CM (Collagen Matrices) in the treatment of Cairo recession Type 1 in mandibular single-rooted teeth. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The study encompassed 80 recessions in 18 patients for whom an MCAT was combined with CM on one side of the mandible and with an SCTG on the contralateral one. The following clinical parameters were measured: gingival recession height (GR) and width (RW), probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), width of keratinized tissue (KT), gingival thickness (GT), and mean (MRC). RESULTS: The MRC on the CM- and SCTG-treated sides was 55.25% and 82.35%, respectively. The SCTG side had a significantly greater improvement in MRC, GR, RW, KT, and GT compared to the CM side. The five-year results were stable relative to one-year observations. CONCLUSIONS: Both methods of treatment enable the achievement of stable long-term clinical results. Application of subepithelial connective tissue grafts is more effective relative to clinical parameters.

The aim of our study was to assess changes in the levels of IL-8 and MMP-9 in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) collected from the periodontal pocket before and after regenerative surgery with deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) and collagen membrane (GTR) either independently (DBBM/GTR) or with the postoperative administration of antibiotic (DBBM/GTR+AB). The study involved 41 patients, each with one intrabony defect. IL-8 and MMP-9 were determined before therapy and after 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 6 months following the surgical procedure by means of dedicated ELISA kits. No statistical differences were observed in the levels of IL-8 and MMP-9 after 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 6 months between the groups. The changes in the level of MMP-9 over time were not statistically significant in any group. The changes in the level of IL-8 were significant for the group given antibiotic but not in the nonantibiotic group in the follow-up period. IL-8 and MMP-9 were found to correlate positively but not after 4 weeks in the test group. Current assessment of IL-8 and MMP-9 obtained from GCF samples provides evidence that collagen matrix turnover occurs actively during the early healing phase in the periodontium after regenerative procedures. We observed positive correlations of MMP-9 and IL-8 throughout the study. However, we failed to reveal any differences regard parameters studied between the two groups.

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to assess the coagulation and inflammatory markers connected with severe course of COVID-19 and no clinical improvement. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study population included 2590 adult patients, diagnosed with COVID-19, selected from the SARSTer national database - an ongoing project led by the Polish Association of Epidemiologists and Infectiologists and supported by the Medical Research Agency. Clinical and laboratory parameters, such as C-reactive protein (CRP), white blood cells (WBCs), neutrophil and lymphocyte count, procalcitonin, ferritin, interleukin-6 (IL-6), D-dimer concentration and platelet (PLT) count were analyzed before and after treatment (remdesivir, tocilizumab, dexamethasone, anticoagulants). RESULTS: Significant differences between patients with mild and severe course of the disease were observed in all examined parameters before treatment (p â€‹< â€‹0.05). After treatment only ferritin concentration did not differ significantly. In patients with pulmonary embolism, CRP concentration, neutrophil count, D-dimer and IL-6 concentration were significantly higher than in patients without embolism (p â€‹< â€‹0.05). The significant differences between the groups with and without fatal outcome were observed within all analyzed parameters. Significant differences in all examined parameters before treatment were observed between patients with and without clinical improvement (p â€‹< â€‹0.05). Multivariate logistic regression showed that no clinical improvement was associated with: IL-6>100 â€‹pg/ml (OR-2.14), D-dimer concentration over 1000 â€‹ng/ml (OR-1.62) and PLT count below 150,000/µl (OR-1.57). CONCLUSIONS: Severe course of the disease is associated with lower PLT and lymphocyte count, higher D-dimer, CRP, neutrophil count and IL-6 concentration. The best predictors of no clinical improvement in COVID-19 are: IL-6>100 â€‹pg/ml, D-dimer>1000 â€‹ng/ml and PLT<150,000/µl.

Ticks, such as Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor reticulatus, act as vectors for multiple pathogens posing a threat to both human and animal health. As the process of urbanization is progressing, those arachnids are being more commonly encountered in urban surroundings. In total, 1112 I. ricinus (n = 842) and D. reticulatus (n = 270) ticks were collected from several sites, including recreational urban parks, located in Augustów and Bialystok, Poland. Afterwards, the specimens were examined for the presence of Borrelia spp., Babesia spp., Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia spp., Bartonella spp., and Coxiella burnetii using the PCR method. Overall obtained infection rate reached 22.4% (249/1112). In total, 26.7% (225/842) of I. ricinus was infected, namely with Borrelia spp. (25.2%; 212/842), Babesia spp. (2.0%; 17/842), and A. phagocytophilum (1.2%; 10/842). Among D. reticulatus ticks, 8.9% (24/270) were infected, specifically with Babesia spp. (7.0%; 19/270), A. phagocytophilum (1.1%; 3/270), and Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. (0.7%; 2/270). No specimen tested positively for Rickettsia spp., Bartonella spp., or Coxiella burnetii. Co-infections were detected in 14 specimens. Results obtained in this study confirm that I. ricinus and D. reticulatus ticks found within the study sites of northeastern Poland are infected with at least three pathogens. Evaluation of the prevalence of pathogens in ticks collected from urban environments provides valuable information, especially in light of the growing number of tick-borne infections in humans and domesticated animals.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that not only damages the stomatognathic system, but may also adversely influence other systems and organs. Patients with low oral health literacy levels are more prone to gingivitis/periodontitis and have a more severe disease course. METHODS: A written questionnaire was carried out to assess the knowledge of patients of the Outpatient Clinic of Department of Periodontal and Oral Mucosa Diseases, Medical University of Bialystok, Poland. The questions concerned knowledge regarding the causes of periodontal disease, its risk factors, and the connection between periodontal disease and general health status. To analyze the population, patients were divided according to gender, age and if they were first-time or regular outpatients. RESULTS: Written questionnaires were completed by a total of 302 patients. In the studied population, we noted knowledge deficits, particularly related to weaker periodontal disease risk factors (stress, diabetes, osteoporosis, obesity) and the genetic factor, which is the determinant of periodontitis. The patients' awareness of the role of plaque bacteria and the effect of smoking on the periodontium was at a relatively high level. The respondents were also aware of the impact of periodontal disease on general health as well as the role of oral hygiene in preventing the disease. At the same time, few of them (26%) used interdental brushes or an irrigator (8%). CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated that patients have an insufficient level of knowledge related to risk factors as well as the prevention of periodontal disease. Awareness of the extent of oral health literacy among patients will help to identify key issues connected with health education interventions.

Systemic vaccination with the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine stimulates the humoral response. Our study aimed to compare the intensity of the humoral immune response, measured by SARS-CoV-2 IgG, SARS-CoV-2 IgM, and S-RBD-neutralizing IgG antibody levels after COVID-19 vaccination versus after SARS-CoV-2 infection. We analyzed 1060 people in the following groups: convalescents; healthy unvaccinated individuals; individuals vaccinated with Comirnaty, AstraZeneca, Moderna, or Johnson & Johnson; and vaccinated SARS-CoV-2 convalescents. The concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 IgG, SARS-CoV-2 IgM, and S-RBD-neutralizing antibodies were estimated in an oncology hospital laboratory by chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA; MAGLUMI). Results: (1) We observed a rise in antibody response in both the SARS-CoV-2 convalescent and COVID-19-vaccinated groups. (2) The levels of all antibody concentrations in vaccinated COVID-19 convalescents were significantly higher. (3) We differentiated asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 convalescents from the control group. Our analysis suggests that monitoring SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody concentrations is essential as an indicator of asymptomatic COVID-19 and as a measure of the effectiveness of the humoral response in convalescents and vaccinated people. Considering the time-limited effects of post-SARS-CoV-2 infection recovery or vaccination and the physiological half-life, among other factors, we suggest monitoring IgG antibody levels as a criterion for future vaccination.

Infertility is a problem that affects millions of couples around the world. It is known as a disease of couples, not individuals, which makes diagnosis difficult and treatment unclear. Male infertility can have many causes, from mechanical ones to abnormal spermatogenesis or spermiogenesis. Semen quality is determined by a number of factors, including those dependent on men themselves, with the number of infertile men growing every year. These include, e.g., diet, physical activity, sleep quality, stress, among many others. As these factors co-exist with insulin resistance, which is a disease closely related to lifestyle, it has been singled out in the study due to its role in affecting semen quality. In order to examine connections between lifestyle, insulin resistance, and semen quality, a review of literature published from 1989 to 2020 in the following databases PubMed/Medline, EMBASE (Elsevier), Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar was performed. Hence, semen quality, environment, and insulin resistance are interrelated, thus it is difficult to indicate which aspect is the cause and which is the effect in a particular relationship and the nature of possible correlations. Since the influence of lifestyle on semen quality has been extensively studied, it is recommended that more thorough research be done on the relationship between insulin resistance and semen quality, comparing the semen quality of men with and without insulin resistance.

Flavonoids are widely distributed in plants and constitute the most common polyphenolic phytoconstituents in the human diet. In this study, the in vitro inhibitory activity of 44 different flavonoids (1-44) against mushroom tyrosinase was studied, and an in silico study and type of inhibition for the most active compounds were evaluated too. Tyrosinase inhibitors block melanogenesis and take part in melanin production or distribution leading to pigmentation diseases. The in vitro study showed that quercetin was a competitive inhibitor (IC50=44.38 ± 0.13 µM) and achieved higher antityrosinase activity than the control inhibitor kojic acid. The in silico results highlight the importance of the flavonoid core with a hydroxyl at C7 as a strong contributor of interference with tyrosinase activity. According to the developed statistical model, the activity of molecules depends on hydroxylation at C3 and methylation at C8, C7, and C3 in the benzo-γ-pyrane ring of the flavonoids.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine and estimate the changing levels of matrix metalloproteinases 1 and 8 (MMP-1 and MMP-8) in GCF at consecutive stages of healing after root coverage procedure via modified coronally advanced tunnel (MCAT) combined with either sub-epithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) or collagen matrix (CM) and also to relate those changes to clinical outcomes of both therapeutic approaches. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study involved 20 patients with a total of 91 recessions. Those on one side of the mandible received MCAT plus CM while the contralateral ones MCAT plus SCTG. The evaluation of MMP-1 and MMP-8 concentrations in Gingival Crevicular Fluid (GCF) took place at baseline, then at 1, 2, and 4 weeks, and finally at 3 months after surgery. Elisa protocol was applied to determine the levels of MMP-1 and MMP-8 in GCF. RESULTS: Three-month observation revealed statistically significant changes in MMP-1, MMP-8 and Sulcus Fluid Flow Rate (SFFR) values after implementation of both techniques. A correlation was found between a difference in MMP-1 concentrations and gain in Keratinized Tissue (KT) after SCTG and CM. MMP-8 levels and a Gingival Thickness (GT) gain observed after CM was also correlated. CONCLUSIONS: A type of augmentative material does appear to determine the dynamics of MMP-1 secretion.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the potential influence of systemic antibiotic administration on the healing of periodontal intrabony defects treated with deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) and collagen membrane. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-one intrabony defects were treated by means of DBBM and collagen membrane (GTR). Postoperatively, the patients received either systemic antibiotics (i.e., 1 g of amoxicillin, twice daily for 7 days) (test) or no antibiotics (control). Clinical attachment level (CAL), probing depth (PD), and gingival recession (GR) were measured at baseline and at 1 year following regenerative surgery. The depth of the intrabony component (INTRA DD) and its width (INTRA DW) were measured during surgery and after 1 year at reentry. The depth (RxD) and width (RxW) of the intrabony defects were evaluated radiographically at baseline and at 1 year. RESULTS: No adverse events were observed in any of the two groups throughout the entire study period. In the test group, mean CAL changed from 8.7 ± 1.4 mm at baseline to 5.0 ± 1.7 mm at 1 year (p < 0.0001), while PD decreased from 7.8 ± 1.5 mm at baseline to 4.0 ± 0.9 mm at 1 year (p < 0.0001). In the control group, mean CAL changed from 8.6 ± 1.9 mm to 5.9 ± 1.6 mm (p < 0.001) and mean PD improved from 7.4 ± 1.3 mm to 4.1 ± 1.3 mm (p < 0.001). Mean CAL gain measured 3.6 ± 1.6 mm in the test and 2.7 ± 1.6 mm in the control group, respectively. Defect fill (i.e., INTRA DD gain) at re-entry measured 3.7 ± 1.8 mm in the test and 2.7 ± 2.1 mm in the control group. A CAL gain of ≥ 3 mm was measured in 76% of the defects in the test group and in 40% of the defects in the control group, respectively. In both groups, all evaluated clinical and radiographic parameters improved statistically significantly compared with baseline, but no statistically significant differences were found between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Within their limits, the present study has failed to show any substantial added clinical benefits following the postoperative administration of amoxicillin in conjunction with regenerative periodontal surgery using DBBM and GTR. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The post-surgically administration of systemic antibiotics does not seem to be necessary following regenerative periodontal surgery.

Tick-borne diseases are a major threat to human and animal health. An increasing number of natural habitats have been transformed into urban areas by human activity; hence, the number of reported tick bites in urban and suburban areas has risen. This retrospective analysis evaluated 53 scientific reports concerning infections of Ixodes ricinus ticks collected from urban and suburban areas of Europe between 1991 and 2017. The results indicate significant differences in many variables, including a higher number of Anaplasma phagocytophilum infections in Eastern Europe than in Western Europe. The opposite result was observed for Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis infections. A comparison of climate zones revealed that Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. infections have the greatest median incidence rate in subtropical climate zones. No statistical significance was found when comparing other tick-borne pathogens (TBPs), such as Borrelia miyamotoi, Rickettsia spp., Babesia spp., Bartonella spp., Ehrlichia spp., Coxiella burnetii and Francisella tularensis. The analysis also showed significant differences in the overall prevalence of TBPs according to average temperatures and rainfall across Europe. This retrospective study contributes to the knowledge on the occurrence and prevalence of TBPs in urbanized areas of Europe and their dependence on the habitats and geographical distributions of ticks. Due to the increased risk of tick bites, it is of great importance to investigate infections in ticks from urban and suburban areas.
