RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening among eligible adults, but information on screening use in the US territories is limited. METHODS: To estimate the proportion of adults up-to-date with breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening based on USPSTF recommendations, we analyzed Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data from 2016, 2018, and 2020 for the 50 US states and DC (US) and US territories of Guam and Puerto Rico and from 2016 for the US Virgin Islands. Age-standardized weighted proportions for up-to-date cancer screening were examined overall and by select characteristics for each jurisdiction. RESULTS: Overall, 67.2% (95% CI: 60.6-73.3) of women aged 50-74 years in the US Virgin Islands, 74.8% (70.9-78.3) in Guam, 83.4% (81.7-84.9) in Puerto Rico, and 78.3% (77.9-78.6) in the US were up-to-date with breast cancer screening. For cervical cancer screening, 71.1% (67.6-74.3) of women aged 21-65 years in Guam, 81.3% (74.6-86.5) in the US Virgin Islands, 83.0% (81.7-84.3) in Puerto Rico, and 84.5% (84.3-84.8) in the US were up-to-date. For colorectal cancer screening, 45.2% (40.0-50.5) of adults aged 50-75 years in the US Virgin Islands, 47.3% (43.6-51.0) in Guam, 61.2% (59.5-62.8) in Puerto Rico, and 69.0% (68.7-69.3) in the US were up-to-date. Adults without health care coverage reported low test use for all three cancers in all jurisdictions. In most jurisdictions, test use was lower among adults with less than a high school degree and an annual household income of < $25,000. CONCLUSION: Cancer screening test use varied between the US territories, highlighting the importance of understanding and addressing territory-specific barriers. Test use was lower among groups without health care coverage and with lower income and education levels, suggesting the need for targeted evidence-based interventions.

RESUMEN

There are 14 species of Castniinae known from Mexico of which about ten appear to be endemic. Among the latter, we find Synpalamides chelone (Hopffer, 1856), Synpalamides escalantei (J.Y. Miller, 1976) and Castnia estherae J.Y. Miller, 1976. As far as we can tell, no additional specimens of this latter species have been observed until recently, and most of these are reported herein. A description of the male of S. estherae is provided along with a discussion of the comparative morphology of the closely related S. chelone and S. escalantei, and insight into their life histories and bionomics. Additional review of these species along with the other Synpalamides restricted to South America warranted the description of a new genus, Escalantiana J.Y. Miller gen. nov., to which the above species are assigned.

RESUMEN

Two new species of Megalota Diakonoff, 1966 are described and illustrated from the Bahamas: M. bahamana Brown Matthews, new species, and M. insularis Brown and Matthews, new species. The two are among the 65 or so species of Tortricidae recorded from the Bahamas during an inventory of the Lepidoptera of the archipelago initiated in 2010.

RESUMEN

Recent surveys to document the poorly known moth fauna of the Bahamas have resulted in the collection of more than 60 morphospecies of Tortricidae. Among these are several Eucosmini, including undescribed representatives of Eucosma and Pelochrista that are similar to several species present in the southeastern United States. Eucosma bahamae, sp.n., a member of the E. refusana group, and Pelochrista wrighti, sp.n., a member of the P. canana group, are described and illustrated.

RESUMEN

A new species of Cyllopsis R. Felder, 1869, is described and illustrated from the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico. Cyllopsis tomemmeli A. Warren Nakahara, sp. nov., is currently known from 13 specimens (9 males and 4 females) collected on March 26-28, 1959, southeast of San Cristóbal de Las Casas. Despite extensive studies on the butterfly fauna of this region, this species has not since been encountered. We discuss possible relationships between this new species and other species of Cyllopsis.

BACKGROUND: This open, randomized clinical trial (NCT00758264) evaluated the coadministration of a booster dose of the 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PHiD-CV) and a single dose of the tetravalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY-TT) in Taiwanese and Mexican toddlers. METHODS: Healthy toddlers aged 12-23 months (N = 363) were randomized (2:1:1) to receive either both vaccines at first visit, MenACWY-TT at first visit and 1 month later PHiD-CV, or PHiD-CV at first visit and 1 month later MenACWY-TT. Immune responses were measured 1 month after MenACWY-TT vaccination by meningococcal serum bactericidal activity (rSBA) assay and 1 month after PHiD-CV vaccination by pneumococcal 22F-inhibition enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and functional opsonophagocytic activity assay. Solicited and unsolicited symptoms were recorded for days 4 and 31 postvaccination, respectively. Serious adverse events were recorded throughout the study. RESULTS: The prespecified criteria for noninferiority of coadministration versus individual administrations were met for all meningococcal serogroups (in terms of percentages of toddlers with rSBA titer ≥8) and all vaccine pneumococcal serotypes (in terms of antibody geometric mean concentration ratios), except pneumococcal serotype 18C. For each meningococcal serogroup, ≥97.5% of toddlers across the 3 groups had rSBA titers ≥128 at 1 month after MenACWY-TT vaccination. For each pneumococcal serotype, at 1 month after PHiD-CV vaccination, ≥96.0% and ≥92.9% of toddlers across the 3 groups had antibody concentrations ≥0.2 µg/mL and opsonophagocytic activity titers ≥8, respectively. The safety profiles of both vaccines when coadministered were clinically acceptable. CONCLUSIONS: This study supports the coadministration of PHiD-CV and MenACWY-TT in toddlers.
