RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Nordic ski athletes are at increased risk of developing hip pain and dysfunction secondary to femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS), but it is unclear whether hip symptomatology differs between ski jumping (SJ) and Nordic combined (NC) athletes. The purpose of this study was to compare patient-reported hip pain and dysfunction between elite Nordic ski athletes participating in SJ versus NC. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving SJ and NC athletes who competed at the international and U.S. national levels during the 2021-2022 season. Subjects were excluded if they had hip surgery within two years prior to enrollment. Subjects were asked to undergo diagnostic workups for FAIS, including physical examination and plain radiographic imaging. Subjects were asked to complete a survey that collected information on athletic and training history and to complete the hip disability and osteoarthritis outcome score (HOOS). Demographics, athletic/training history, and HOOS sub-scores were compared between the SJ and NC groups using the Student's t-test, Wilcoxon rank-sum test, or Fisher's exact test, as appropriate. p-values < 0.05 were considered significant. RESULTS: Twenty-four athletes (13 SJ, 11 NC) were included in the study. There were no statistically significant differences in age, sex, BMI, or age of menarche between the two groups (all p â€‹> â€‹0.05). There were also no statistically significant differences in the number of prior sports participated in, total hours of participation in prior sports, or total hours of training in Nordic specialization (all p â€‹> â€‹0.05). Among the 18 athletes who underwent physical examination (9 SJ, 9 NC), there were no statistically significant inter-group differences in hip range of motion or incidence of positive impingement tests (all p â€‹> â€‹0.05). Among the 19 athletes who underwent imaging (9 SJ, 10 NC), there were no statistically significant inter-group differences in the incidence of cam or pincer morphology in at least one hip (all p â€‹> â€‹0.05). SJ athletes had statistically significantly worse HOOS sub-scores for hip symptoms and stiffness, hip function in sports/recreational activities, and hip-related quality of life compared to NC athletes (all p â€‹< â€‹0.05). CONCLUSION: Elite SJ athletes have worse self-reported hip function compared to elite NC athletes, despite comparable demographics, athletic history, and duration of ski training. BACKGROUND: Force plate-based jump testing may serve as a potential alternative to traditional return to sport (RTS) testing batteries. The purpose of our study was to identify force plate jump metrics that were predictive of RTS test findings in patients who were at least six months postoperative following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of patients who underwent ACLR at our center and were at least six months postoperative. Subjects completed a multimodal Institutional RTS (IRTS) testing battery which included range of motion (ROM) testing and isokinetic quadriceps strength testing. Subjects also completed a countermovement jump testing protocol on a commercially-available force plate. Jump metrics predictive of IRTS test findings were identified using multivariable linear and logistic regression with stepwise selection. Model significance was assessed at α=0.002. RESULTS: Sixteen patients (7M, 9F) were enrolled in our study with median age of 29 years (range 20-47). Relative concentric impulse was positively predictive of knee flexion active ROM (ß=7.07, P=0.01) and passive ROM (ß=9.79, P=0.003). Maximum power was positively predictive of quadriceps strength at 60 deg/s (ß=3.27, P<0.001) and 180 deg/s (ß=2.46, P<0.001). Center-of-pressure (COP) shift acceleration along the force plate X-axis was negatively predictive of Bunkie lateral test score (ß=-945, P<0.001) and medial test score (ß=-839, P=0.03). CONCLUSIONS: Force plate-derived vertical jump testing metrics are predictive of certain components of a multimodal RTS physical assessment for ACLR patients, including knee flexion ROM, quadriceps strength on isokinetic testing, and Bunkie Test performance.

BACKGROUND: Only 14% of adults with obesity attain federal guidelines for physical activity (PA), but few interventions address obesity-specific barriers to PA. We designed the web-based Physical Activity for The Heart (PATH) intervention to address this gap. PURPOSE: Test the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of PATH for promoting PA and reducing cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in adults with overweight/obesity. METHODS: In a 12-week pilot RCT, participants were randomized to PATH (n = 41) or wait-list control (n = 41) groups. Treatment group received access to PATH and met twice/month with a remote coach. The control group received a self-help PA guide and newsletters on general health. Moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) was assessed via Actigraph-GT3X, steps via Fitbit Charge 2™, weight via smart scale, blood pressure (BP) via Omron BP device, and lipids/HbAIC via dry blood spot. Linear mixed modeling examined between- and within-group differences in PA and CVD risk. RESULTS: The sample (N = 82) was on average 55.9 ± 8.2 years old; mean BMI 35.5 ± 6.2 kg/m2; 57.3% white and 80.5% female. Recruitment lasted 6-months, and 12-week retention was 96.3%. Treatment group accessed PATH ≥twice/week (92.1%), spent ≥10 min/visit (89.5%) and thought the site was culturally appropriate (79%). At 12 wks, the PATH group had greater mean changes in weekly MVPA (+58.9 vs. +0.9 min, p = .024) and daily steps (+1246.4 vs. -64.2 steps, p = .002) compared to the control group. Also, the PATH group improved in weight, BMI, body fat, waist circumference, and BP (p < .05). CONCLUSION: The PATH intervention is feasible/acceptable and demonstrated preliminary efficacy for promoting PA among adults with overweight/obesity.

BACKGROUND: Anthropometric, physical and demographic characteristics have the potential to affect performance in competitive pool swimmers. METHODS: Study aimed were therefore to examine the effect of 26 anthropometric, physical and demographic characteristics on qualification for Nationals and swim times among both male and female collegiate swimmers in separate analyses. Swim times were determined by swimmers' best swim time for their best swim stroke as a percent of the top swim time among Division III collegiate swimmers during the 2017-2018 swim season. RESULTS: Lower body fat measured mid-season and a greater ratio of height to arm span were associated with qualifying for Nationals among females. For males, associations were present for older age, shorter left-hand length and larger left arm circumference; and qualifying for Nationals. In relation to percent of top swim times, there was an association between larger right-hand width and left foot length among males. None of the other associations achieved statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS: Owing to the large number of analyses performed and the resultant likelihood of type I errors as well as the small effect sizes in most statistically significant associations, study results suggest that collegiate swimmers should not be chosen for swim teams based on any of the non-modifiable anthropometric or physical characteristics that were measured in this study. Results suggest however, that swim speed times are decreased among female collegiate swimmers with lower body fat percent when measured mid-season.

While thiocarbonyl-stabilised phosphonium ylides generally react upon flash vacuum pyrolysis by the extrusion of Ph3PS to give alkynes in an analogous way to their carbonyl-stabilised analogues, two examples with a hydrogen atom on the ylidic carbon are found to undergo a quite different process. The net transfer of a phenyl group from P to S gives (Z)-configured 1-diphenylphosphino-2-(phenylsulfenyl)alkenes in a novel isomerisation process via intermediate λ5-1,2-thiaphosphetes. These prove to be versatile hemilabile ligands with a total of seven complexes prepared involving five different transition metals. Four of these are characterised by X-ray diffraction with two involving the bidentate ligand forming a five-membered ring metallacycle and two with the ligand coordinating to the metal only through phosphorus.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to characterize using MRI the effects of a 10-week supervised exercise program on lower extremity skeletal muscle composition, nerve microarchitecture, and metabolic function in individuals with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Twenty participants with DPN completed a longitudinal trial consisting of a 30-day control period, during which subjects made no change to their lifestyle, followed by a 10-week intervention program that included three supervised aerobic and resistance exercise sessions per week targeting the upper and lower extremities. The participants' midcalves were scanned with multinuclear MRI two times prior to intervention (baseline1 and baseline2) and once following intervention to measure relaxation times (T1, T1ρ, and T2), phosphocreatine recovery, fat fraction, and diffusion parameters. RESULTS: There were no changes between baseline1 and baseline2 MRI metrics (p>0.2). Significant changes (p<0.05) between baseline2 and postintervention MRI metrics were: gastrocnemius medialis (GM) T1 -2.3%±3.0% and soleus T2 -3.2%±3.1%. Trends toward significant changes (0.050.3) and tibial nerve fractional anisotropy (p>0.6) and apparent diffusion coefficient (p>0.4). CONCLUSIONS: The 10-week supervised exercise intervention program successfully reduced adiposity and altered resting tissue properties in the lower leg in DPN. Gastrocnemius mitochondrial oxidative capacity and tibial nerve microarchitecture changes were not observed, either due to lack of response to therapy or to lack of measurement sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have used the internet to promote physical activity (PA) in several settings, including the home environment, but few have been tailored for African Americans (AAs). To address this research gap, we conducted focus groups with AAs to inform the development of a web-based intervention, Physical Activity for The Heart (PATH), that leverages openly accessible platforms, such as YouTube, to promote PA in any setting. PURPOSE: To describe the rationale and design of a pilot randomized clinical trial (RCT), that examines the feasibility and acceptability of the PATH intervention among 30 AA adults aged 40--70 years without history of cardiovascular disease. METHODS: A 12-week, single-site, wait-listed RCT with subjects randomized 1:1 to either: 1) treatment group - participants receive the PATH intervention, including the online portal and twice a month phone calls from a PA coach, or 2) attention control group - participants receive a self-help PA handout and twice a month general health newsletter. All participants self-monitor step count using actigraphy. The primary outcomes of this 12-week, pilot RCT are recruitment, retention, and adherence to self-monitoring (Actigraph wear time) and the intervention protocol (PATH utilization). The secondary outcomes include changes in PA (step count, moderate-to-vigorous PA, exercise self-efficacy), and cardiometabolic risk (HbA1C, HDL, LDL, total cholesterol, type 2 diabetes risk score, percent body fat, weight, and waist circumference) from baseline to 12 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: This study will provide PATH intervention feasibility and acceptability data among inactive AA adults and will inform a future, full-scale RCT testing efficacy.

Titanocene 1,8-dithiolato-naphthalene and titanocene 2,2'-dithiolato biphenyl are produced by the reaction of naphtho[1,8-cd]-1,2-dithiole [or the biphenyl] with titanocene dicarbonyl (Ti(II)) in toluene at room temperature. The pro-ligands 2,7-di(tert-butyl)naphtho[1,8-cd]-1,2-dithiole, 5,6-dihydroacenaphtho[5,6-cd]-1,2-dithiole, 4,5-dithioacephenanthrylene, and 13,14-dithiapicene have been used in similar reactions with titanocene dicarbonyl to investigate the effect of steric bulk and of varying the naphthalene backbone on the final complex. The resulting Cp(2)TiS(2)Ar complexes (Ar = naphthalene) have been shown by temperature-dependent (1)H NMR spectroscopy to exist in solution in an envelope conformation with the six-membered TiS(2)C(3) rings undergoing inversion on the NMR time scale while the similar Cp(2)TiS(2)Ar complexes (Ar = biphenyl, binaphthalene) interconvert more rapidly. Titanocene 2,2'-disulfinato biphenyl has been synthesized by the salt elimination reaction of titanocene dichloride (Ti(IV)) and the disodium salt of biphenyl 2,2'-disulfinic acid. Finally, the effect of using pro-ligands where the sulfur atoms have been mono- or di-oxidized has been studied, and an interesting oxygen elimination reaction is observed for the S=O fragments but not for the SO(2) groups. All complexes have been characterized spectroscopically and seven X-ray structures are reported.

Oxidative addition of the disulfide compounds naphtho[1,8-cd][1,2]dithiole, 2-tert-butylnaptho[1,8-cd][1,2]dithiole, 2,7-di-tert-butylnaphtho[1,8-cd][1,2]dithiole, 4,5-dithiaacephenanthrylene and the thio/sulfinyl and thio/sulfonyl compounds naphtho[1,8-cd][1,2]dithiole 1-oxide, and naphtho[1,8-cd][1,2]dithiole 1,1-dioxide respectively to [[Ir(mu-Cl)(cod)](2)] give dinuclear Ir-Ir bonded Ir(II) compounds [[IrCl(cod)](2)(mu(2)-1,8-S(2)-nap)] 1, [[IrCl(cod)](2)(mu(2)-1,8-S(2)-2-(t)Bu-nap)] 2, [[IrCl(cod)](2)(mu(2)-1,8-S(2)-2,7-di-(t)Bu-nap)]] 3, [[IrCl(cod)](2)(mu(2)-4,5-S(2)-phenan)] 4, [[IrCl(cod)](2)(mu(2)-1-S,8-[S(O)]-nap)] 5 and [[IrCl(cod)](2)(mu(2)-1-S,8-[S(O)(2)]-nap)] 6 where the di-sulfur ligands act as bridges between the two Ir(II) metal centres. The compounds were obtained in moderate to good yields as orange or deep red powders or crystalline solids. Five of the new complexes have been structurally characterised and were found to have Ir-Ir bond lengths in the range 2.7630(8) to 2.8113(11) A.

Seven new pyridine dicarboxamide ligands H2L(1-7) have been synthesised from condensation reactions involving pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (H2dipic), pyridine-2,6-dicarbonyl dichloride or 2,6-diaminopyridine with heterocyclic amine or carboxylic acid precursors. Crystallographic analyses of N,N'-bis(2-pyridyl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide monohydrate (H2L8 x H2O), N,N'-bis[2-(2-pyridyl)methyl]pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide and N,N'-bis[2-(2-pyridyl)ethyl]pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide monohydrate revealed extensive intramolecular hydrogen bonding interactions. 2,6-Bis(pyrazine-2-carboxamido)pyridine (H2L6) and 2,6-bis(pyridine-2-carboxamido)pyridine (H2L7) reacted with copper(II) acetate monohydrate to give tricopper(II) complexes [Cu3(L)2(mu2-OAc)2]. X-Ray crystallography confirmed deprotonation of the amidic nitrogen atoms and that the (L6,7)2- ligands and acetate anions hold three copper(II) ions in approximately linear fashion. H2L8. Reacted with copper(II) tetrakis(pyridine) perchlorate to give [Cu(L8)(OH2)]2 x 2H2O, in which (L8)2- was tridentate through the nitrogen atoms of the central pyridine ring and the deprotonated carboxamide groups at one copper centre, with one of the terminal pyridyl rings coordinating to the other copper atom in the dimer. The corresponding reaction using H2L7 gave [Cu3(L7)2(py)2][ClO4]2, which transformed during an attempted recrystallisation from ethanol under aerobic conditions to a tetracopper(II) complex [Cu4(L7)2(L7-O)2].

[PPh4]2[M(C2N2S2)2](M = Pt, Pd) and [Pt(C2N2S2)(PR3)2](PR3= PMe2Ph, PPh3) and [Pt(C2N2S2)(PP)](PP = dppe, dppm, dppf) were all obtained by the reaction of the appropriate metal halide containing complex with potassium cyanodithioimidocarbonate. The dimeric cyanodithioimidocarbonate complexes [[Pt(C2N2S2)(PR3)]2](PR3 = PMe2Ph), [M[(C2N2S2)(eta5-C5Me5)]2](M = Rh, Ir)and [[Ru(C2N2S2)(eta6-p-MeC6H4iPr)]2] have been synthesised from the appropriate transition metal dimer starting material. The cyanodithioimidocarbonate ligand is S,S and bidentate in the monomeric complexes with the terminal CN group being approximately coplanar with the CS2 group and trigonal at nitrogen thus reducing the planar symmetry of the ligand. In the dimeric compound one of the sulfur atoms bridges two metal atoms with the core exhibiting a cubane-like geometry.

Platinum bisphosphine complexes bearing dichalcogen-derivatised naphthalene, acenaphthene or phenanthrene ligands have been prepared by either oxidative addition to zero-valent platinum species or from [PtCl(2)(PPhR(2))] (R=Ph or Me) and the disodium or dilithium salts of the parent disulfur, diselenide or mixed S/Se species. The parent naphthalene, acenaphthene and phenanthrene chalcogen compounds were treated with either [Pt(PPh(3))(4)] or [Pt(C(2)H(4))(PMe(3))(2)] (prepared in situ from [PtCl(2)(PMe(3))(2)], ethene and sodium naphthalide or super hydride [LiBEt(3)H]) to give the appropriate platinum(II) species. The dilithium salts of 1,8-E(2)-naphthalene (E=S or Se) prepared in situ by reduction of the E-E bond with [LiBEt(3)H] were treated with [PtCl(2)(PPh(3))(2)] to give [Pt(1,8-E(2)-nap)(PPh(3))(2)]. The tetraoxides [Pt(1,8-(S(O)(2))(2)-nap)(PR(3))(2)] (PR(3)=PPh(3) or PMe(2)Ph) were prepared in a similar metathetical manner from the appropriate [PtCl(2)(PR(3))] complexes and the disodium salt of naphthalene 1,8-disulfinic acid (1,8-(S(O)ONa)(2)-nap). The X-ray structures of selected examples reveal bidentate coordination with the naphthalene-E(2) unit hinged (111-137 degrees) with respect to the coordination plane. The naphthalene ring suffers significant distortion from planarity.

RESUMEN

Several new 1,8-diphosphanaphthalene oxochloro compounds and oxoacids were prepared and fully characterized. The new compounds are discussed in the broader context with other known congeners to demonstrate the variability of the diphosphanaphthalene scaffolding's bonding patterns. Three principal modes of interaction of the phosphorus moieties were observed in the series: bonding, bridging, and repulsive, resulting respectively in none, moderate, and substantial crowding and distortions. The unexpected dimeric diphosphaacenaphthene anion has been obtained from disproportionative hydrolysis of Nap(PCl(2))(2) (Nap = naphthalene-1,8-diyl).
