INTRODUCTION: Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is a rare, benign bone tumor that occurs predominantly in the second and third decades of life, more frequently in males. Overexpression of GRM1 as a consequence of tumor-specific gene rearrangement of GRM1 has recently been reported as a useful immunohistochemical marker for histopathological diagnosis of CMF. However, the usefulness of GRM1 staining of cytology specimens has not yet been evaluated. In this report, the cytological findings and GRM1 immunocytochemistry of two cases of CMF are described. CASE PRESENTATIONS: Case 1 was a 15-year-old girl with a rib tumor. Imaging findings suggested a benign neurogenic tumor such as schwannoma. The tumor had increased in size over a 2-year period and was resected. Case 2 was a 14-year-old boy with a metatarsal tumor involving his left first toe. Imaging findings were suspicious of a benign neoplastic lesion. Biopsy findings suggested a benign tumor, and the patient underwent tumor resection. Cytologically, in both cases the tumor cells were predominantly spindle-shaped or stellate, with a myxoid to chondromyxoid background matrix and multinucleated giant cells, and these matrices were metachromatic with Giemsa staining. Cellular atypia was more accentuated in case 2 than in case 1. Immunocytochemical staining for GRM1 was positive in both cases. CONCLUSION: Due to the overlap in cytological findings, it is often difficult to differentiate CMF from chondroblastoma and chondrosarcoma grade 2. Immunocytochemical staining for GRM1 may support the diagnosis of CMF, and the reuse of Papanicolaou-stained specimens is applicable. The present cases further demonstrated the difficulty of differentiating CMF from other mimicking tumors such as chondroblastoma and chondrosarcoma grade 2. In such instances, immunocytochemistry for GRM1 is applicable to the diagnostic process, the value of which is strengthened by reusing Papanicolaou-stained specimens.

BACKGROUND: The streak artifacts in computed tomography (CT) images caused by low photon counts are known to be effectively suppressed by raw-data-based techniques. This study aims to propose a technique to reduce the streak artifact without accessing the raw data. METHODS: The proposed streak artifact reduction (SAR) technique consists of three steps: numerical forward projection to a CT image, adaptive filtering of the generated sinogram, and image reconstruction from the processed sinogram. The authors have expanded the two-dimensional method (2D-SAR) to three dimensions (3D-SAR) by using consecutive CT images. The modulation transfer function (MTF), the image noise (standard deviation), and the visibility of comb-shaped objects were evaluated at a low dose of 5 mGy. Using anthropomorphic abdominal and chest phantoms, CT images and the artifact index (AI) were compared between 3D-SAR and two types of iterative reconstruction (IR). RESULTS: Sufficient artifact reductions associated with 54% and 61% reduction of noise for 2D- and 3D-SAR, respectively, were obtained in the phantom images, although the 50%MTF decreased by 28%. The visibility of the combs was improved with both the 2D- and 3D-SAR methods. The AI results of 3D-SAR were better than one type of IR and almost equal to the other type of IR, which was consistent with observed artifacts. CONCLUSION: Both 2D-SAR and 3D-SAR have turned out to be effective in reducing streak artifacts. The proposed technique will be an effective tool since it needs no raw data, and thus can be applied to any CT images produced by a wide variety of CT systems.

The present study was performed for determining the optimal timing of MR sialography by use of the Japanese pickled plum (umeboshi) for promoting secretion by the salivary glands. MR sialography was performed in four healthy male volunteers. The four volunteers were examined before and 10 min after stimulation with umeboshi. On the next examination, three volunteers were examined before and after umeboshi stimulation every 1 min up to 5 min to allow assessment of the temporal changes in duct visualization. Dilatation of the salivary gland ducts and improvement of the visualization of the ducts were obtained after stimulation with umeboshi. The difference in the dilatation of the parotid duct was statistically significant. In the temporal study, the salivary gland ducts were shown to be dilated at 2 min after stimulation. As a result, 2 min after stimulation is the optimal timing for MR sialography by use of umeboshi as a stimulator of salivary secretion.
