RESUMEN

Bats may exhibit different patterns of activity, considering aspects concerning niche dynamics as well as the establishment and permanence of the communities in the ecosystems. In this way, the present study analyzed the time and seasonal patterns of activity in different species of frequent phyllostomid bats in remnants of the stational semidecidual forest from the Upper Paraná River, Southern Brazil. Captures were performed between January and December, 2006, using 32 mist nets set above the soil along the nocturnal period during the four seasons of the year. The daily and seasonal patterns of activity of each species was modeled using generalized linear models with Poisson error. The best model was selected using Akaike's Information Criterion (AICc). Artibeus planirostris (Spix, 1823) did not exhibit a conspicuous time pattern, whereas A. lituratus (Olfers, 1818) was more frequent after the sixth hour and A. fimbriatus Gray, 1838 had an activity increase along the night. Platyrrhinus lineatus (E. Geoffroy, 1810) was registered during all sampling hours. Carollia perspicillata (Linnaeus, 1758) and Sturnira lilium (E. Geoffroy, 1810) were the most active during the first four hours. Concerning seasonal pattern, the highest activity of these species was verified during the summer. These data contribute to the information about the ecology of bats in the region, highlighting the high adaptive potential of the species studied in relation to the use of space throughout the night and in to variations in environmental conditions.

The income of small-scale fisheries of two urban reservoirs in Brazil: Represa Billings (127 km2) located in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, the capital city of the state of São Paulo and Lago Paranoá (38 km2) located in Brasília (DF), the capital city of Brazil were calculated and compared. Both fisheries are mainly based on the alien Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (more than 80% of the total catch). Although these reservoirs are nearly 900 km apart, their native fish fauna belong to the Upper Paraná Province. The Represa Billings fishers have, on average, a daily profit of 15.8 R dollars (8.4 U dollars mostly employing gill nets) and Lago Paranoá fishers 46.6 R dollars (24.9 U dollars, mostly employing cast nets), which is a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001). The profit of the fisheries is explained by the factor "reservoir" and covariate "days of fishing". Due to the increasing violence in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, the Represa Billings fishery is vanishing.

Neste artigo, foi calculada e comparada a renda média de pescadores de pequena escala, que operam em dois reservatórios urbanos no Brasil: na Represa Billings (127 km²), localizada na região metropolitana da cidade de São Paulo, e no Lago Paranoá (38 km²), localizado em Brasília (DF). Ambas as pescarias são baseadas em espécies exóticas, principalmente a Tilápia do Nilo, Oreochromis niloticus (mais de 80 por cento das capturas). Os pescadores da Represa Billings têm um ganho médio diário de R$ 17,75 (U$ 8,4), empregando principalmente a rede-de-espera. Os pescadores do Lago Paranoá têm um ganho médio diário de R$ 46,58 (U$ 24,9), empregando principalmente a tarrafa. A renda dos pescadores de Brasília é estatisticamente superior à dos pescadores de São Paulo (P < 0.01). O lucro dessas pescarias é explicado pela natureza do reservatório (Paranoá ou Billings) e pelos dias de pesca. Devido ao aumento da violência na região metropolitana de São Paulo, as pescarias na Represa Billings estão desaparecendo.

The prevalence of Clinostomum complanatum Rudolphi, 1814 (Digenea, Clinostomidae) in fishes Loricariichthys platymetopon, Parauchenipterus galeatus and Hoplosternum littorale, which are second intermediate hosts, was studied at the floodplain of the high Paraná River, Brazil. Season (alternation flood-drought), habitat (lentic and semi-lotic), and sex were not related to its prevalence. For L. platymetopon, the immature and smaller fish had the lowest prevalence, whilst the opposite was observed for P. galeatus and H. littorale. This suggests that the probability of being predated is unchanged by parasitism for L. platymetopon; thus, a cumulative effect of repeated infections is observed; for the two other species, the highest parasitised fish may have higher predation mortality rates. While H. littorale is the preferred item in birds' diet, L. platymetopon is the most abundant fish species and has the highest C. complanatum prevalence, which makes it the most likely path of transmission to the bird, the definitive hosts of C. complanatum.

The relationship between habitats and the ichthyofauna composition in the Parque Nacional das Emas (PNE) and adjacent areas (the Araguaia and Sucuriú rivers) are provided and could be applied in determining the Park's future zoning. Samples of the ichthyofauna and limnological parameters were obtained during both dry (September 1999) and wet (December 1999) seasons. Ichthyofauna collections resulted in the capture of 4,740 specimens of 22 species. The most abundant species in the Araguaia River during the two sampling seasons were Astyanax sp. 2 and Hasemania sp. In the Sucuriú River and PNE, Astyanax scabripinnis cf. paranae and Hoplias aff. malabaricus were the most frequent species. The largest number of species and diversity index were recorded for the Araguaia River. However, sound management policies require more detailed studies on the fish communities of the Cerrado biome.

Local and turnover patterns of fish diversity in the Itaipu Reservoir were evaluated and related to a longitudinal or river-dam gradient (composed of riverine, transitional, and lacustrine zones) and to transversal or upstream-downstream gradients of the tributaries (composed of lotic and lentic stretches of tributaries and reservoir shores). Thirteen stations were sampled quarterly during 2 years. A total of 85 fish species were caught. Local (alpha) and turnover (beta) patterns of fish diversity showed significant differences in reservoir spatial gradients. Along the longitudinal gradient, total and alpha-diversity were the highest in the riverine and transitional zones of the reservoir and lowest in the lacustrine zone. Along the transversal gradient, total and alpha-diversity increased from the lotic stretches of the tributaries to the reservoir shores. The lotic and lentic stretches of the tributaries presented the highest beta-diversity values, indicating heterogeneity in species compositions among the sub-basins. We conclude with recommendations for reservoir management based on the results of this study.

Com o objetivo de obter informações básicas para o futuro zoneamento do Parque Nacional das Emas (PNE), foram realizadas amostragens ictiofaunísticas e de parâmetros limnólógicos durante o período de seca (setembro/1999) e de chuvas (dezembro/1999) em estações de coletas localizadas no interior do Parque e em áreas adjacentes (rios Araguaia e Sucuriú). Foram capturados 4.740 indivíduos, distribuídos em 22 espécies. Entre as espécies mais abundantes destacam-se Astyanax sp. 2 e Hasemania sp. no rio Araguaia e Astyanax scabripinnis cf. paranae e Hoplias aff. malabaricus no rio Sucuriú e PNE. A maior diversidade de espécies foi constatada para o rio Araguaia. Entretanto, para que medidas de manejo possam ser tomadas de forma criteriosa, estudos ecológicos mais detalhados das comunidades de peixes do cerrado devem ser conduzidos.

RESUMEN

Padrões locais e regionais de diversidade de peixes no reservatório de Itaipu foram avaliados e relacionados aos gradientes longitudinal ou rioûrepresa (dividido nas zonas fluvial, intermediária e lacustre) e transversal ou cabeceiraûfoz dos tributários (dividido em trechos lóticos e lênticos dos tributários e margens do reservatório). As coletas foram realizadas trimestralmente durante dois anos. Foram capturadas 85 espécies. Os padrões de diversidade local (a) e turnover (b) apresentaram diferenças significativas ao longo dos gradientes espaciais. Ao longo do gradiente longitudinal, as diversidades total e a foram maiores nas zonas fluvial e intermediária. Ao longo do gradiente transversal, as diversidades total e a aumentaram gradualmente do trecho lótico dos tributários às margens do reservatório. Os trechos lóticos e lênticos dos tributários apresentaram os maiores valores de diversidade b, indicando a heterogeneidade na composição de espécies das sub-bacias. Com base nos resultados deste estudo, recomendamos algumas ações de manejo para o reservatório.
