RESUMEN

Aim: To elucidate the antibacterial activity of Sida cordifolia L. phytoextract, evaluate its polyphenol profile and optimize conditions against certain common foodborne bacteria. Methods: After polarity-based sequential extraction, S. cordifolia phytoextracts were tested for antibacterial potential against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Box-Behnken design was used to optimize several process parameters and ultra-performance liquid chromatography confirmed the phenolic composition of the best possible outcome. Results: Agar well diffusion and MIC/MBC assay confirmed a strong bactericidal effect of ethanolic (SC04-ET) extract against ampicillin and colistin-resistant Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus. The direct interactive effect of optimized conditions showed maximum antibacterial performance and ultra-performance liquid chromatography revealed a high amount of phenolic compounds. Conclusion: The results confirmed that ethanolic extract of S. cordifolia has potent bactericidal action against foodborne bacteria.

Organic nature of dyes and their commercially made products are widely utilized in many industries including paper, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, photography, petroleum as well as in textile manufacturing. The textile industry being the top most consumer of a large variety of dyes during various unit processes operation generates substantial amount of wastewater; hence, nominated as "Major Polluter of Potable Water". The direct discharge of such effluents into environment poses serious threats to the functioning of biotic communities of natural ecosystems. The detection of these synthetic dyes is considered as relatively easy, however, it is extremely difficult to completely eliminate them from wastewater and freshwater ecosystems. Aromatic chemical structure seems to be the main reason behind low biodegradability of these dyes. Currently, various physiochemical and biological methods are employed for their remediation. Among them, microbial degradation has attracted greater attention due to its sustainability, high efficiency, cost effectiveness, and eco-friendly nature. The current review presents recent advances in biodegradation of industrial dyes towards a sustainable and tangible technological innovative solutions as an alternative to existing conventional physicochemical treatment processes.

The health of the hospital associated persons, particularly those dealing directly with insertion of devices, are serious cause of concern for hospitals. In this study, the most prevalent organism on the surface of medical devices in PICU were CoNS (16.66%) and Staphylococcus aureus (16.66%), while in NICU the most prevalent organism was Klebsiella spp. (11.25%) among Entero-bacteriaceae group followed by Acinetobacter baumannii (10%), Escherichia coli (2.5%), CoNS (6.25%), S. aureus (6.25%) and Enterococcus faecalis (6.25%). The most common species identified from blood specimen of clinical samples shows the maximum presence of Candida sp. (60/135) followed by A. baumannii (21/135), Klebsiella Pneumoniae (20/135), Enterococci (12/135), Burkholderia cepacia complex (8/135), S. aureus (6/135), E. coli (5/135), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (3/135). Different antibiotics have been used against these micro-organisms; but Cotrimoxazole, Vancomycin have been found more effective against CoNS bacteria, Clindamycin, Tetracycline for S. aureus, Nitofurantoin for Acinetobacter, and for E. faecalis, A. baumanii, and Klebsiella, erythromycin, Colistin, and Ceftriaxone have been found more effective respectively.
