RESUMEN

We evaluated the antimicrobial activities of a cationic Gemini surfactant, trans-1,4-bis[2-(alkanoyloxy)ethyldimethylammonio]-2-butene dichloride [II-m-2(t-butene)] and its derivatives against Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms. The II-m-2(t-butene) compound was previously shown to have good surface activity and biodegradability. A dodecanoyloxy derivative (m = 12) of II-m-2(t-butene) showed excellent antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive Streptococcus aureus [minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC): 7.8 µg/mL] and Gram-negative Escherichia coli (MIC: 31.2 µg/mL).

RESUMEN

To clarify the marketing status of antimicrobial products, descriptions on the labels of commercially available antimicrobial products were investigated from 1991 through 2005, and the results were analyzed using a database system on antimicrobial deodorant agents. A classification table of household antimicrobial products was prepared and revised, based on which target products were reviewed for any changes in the product type. The number of antimicrobial products markedly increased over 3 years starting from 1996, among which there were many products apparently not requiring antimicrobial processing. More recently, in the 2002 and 2004 surveys, while sales of kitchenware and daily necessities decreased, chemical products, baby articles, and articles for pets increased; this poses new problems. To clarify the use of antimicrobial agents in the target products, a 3-step (large, intermediate, small) classification table of antimicrobial agents was also prepared, based on which antimicrobial agents indicated on the product labels were checked. The rate of identifying the agents increased. However, this is because of the increase of chemical products and baby articles, both of which more frequently indicated the ingredient agents on the labels, and the decrease of kitchenware and daily necessities, which less frequently indicated them on the labels. Therefore there has been little change in the actual identification rate. The agents used are characterized by product types: quaternary ammonium salts, metal salts, and organic antimicrobials are commonly used in textiles, plastics, and chemical products, respectively. Since the use of natural organic agents has recently increased, the safety of these agents should be evaluated.

RESUMEN

In order to evaluate the load on the low back of care workers in nursing homes for the elderly, basic activities and working postures were analyzed for six care workers using the 30-s snap reading method. The trunk inclination angle (TIA) was also measured continuously using an inclination monitor. The analysis of basic activities showed that 22.5% and 21.1% of the workshift were spent on 'bathing and ablution' and 'meal', respectively, and 9.3%, 8.7% and 8.3% were spent on 'assistance with elimination', 'assistance with moving and repositioning' and 'exchange of bed sheet', respectively. Total of the assistance activity was 43.7% of the workshift. The analysis of working posture showed that 'standing' and 'standing bent forward' accounted for 36.1% and 29.5%, respectively, of the workshift. Total of three postures loading the low back ('standing bent forward', 'squatting', 'kneeling') accounted for 39.0%. The time spent in TIA of 20 degrees or more was 45.7%. The postures loading the low back during 'bathing and ablution', 'exchange of bed sheet' and 'assistance with elimination' account for 68.3%, 58.2% and 49.6%, respectively, which suggests that these activities load the low back of the care workers considerably.
