RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This pilot study evaluated the relationships between appetite and oral function, and between appetite and the subjective symptoms of decreased oral function. METHODS: Seventy-one adult dental clinic patients (22 males, 66.0 ± 14.0 years) participated in this study. A Council on Nutrition Appetite Questionnaire score of ≤28 indicated anorexia, and the Mini Nutritional Assessment Short-form, body mass index and skeletal muscle mass index were used to define subject characteristics. Seven oral function tests and seven subjective symptoms related to oral function were evaluated. The relationship between subject characteristics, oral function tests, subjective symptoms and anorexia was analysed using the chi-square test and univariate and multivariate logistic regression. RESULT: There were significant differences between the normal appetite group and the anorexia group for the 10-item Eating Assessment Tool (EAT-10) survey and the question 'Food remains in the oral cavity after eating' (p < .05). Univariate logistic regression found significant differences in the items of masticatory function, the EAT-10 survey and the question 'Food remains in the oral cavity after eating'. Multivariate logistic regression revealed significant differences in masticatory function (AOR 4.35; 95% CI: 1.03-18.35; p = .045) and EAT-10 (AOR 6.27; 95% CI: 1.40-24.02; p = .016). CONCLUSION: This pilot study investigated the influence of factors related to oral function on appetite. Relationships were found among poor masticatory function, poor swallowing function and anorexia.

BACKGROUND: New-onset anisocoria is an important clinical clue to life-threatening intracranial injury. Anisocoria alone without impairment of extraocular muscles is a rare presentation of moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI). CASE PRESENTATION: A 79-year-old woman was transported to hospital soon after falling off a bicycle. Glasgow Coma Scale score on arrival was 11 (E3V3M5). On examination at admission, she was found to be drowsy. Bruising was seen around the right eye and pupil diameters differed (right, 4.5 mm; left, 3.0 mm; both reactive to light). Computed tomography of the head revealed hemorrhagic contusion in the left temporal lobe and left pretectal area of the midbrain, right clavicular fracture, and pulmonary contusion with fractures of the 3rd and 4th ribs. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed hemorrhagic contusion of the midbrain. The patient achieved full recovery of motor and mental functions with conservative treatment and was discharged on hospital day 17. CONCLUSION: We encountered a case of anisocoria without major extraocular muscle impairment due to moderate TBI with midbrain contusion.

Antioxidant activities against hypochlorite ions and peroxyl radicals of a chicken dark meat hydrolysate digested with pepsin were examined with the myoglobin method based on the structure change of myoglobin due to redox reaction with reactive oxygen species (ROS). A peptide that showed strong antioxidant activity against the peroxyl radical was isolated from the hydrolysate using HPLC equipped with a hydrophobic-interacting column. The sequence of the first five amino acid residues of the peptide was determined as YASGR (Tyr-Ala-Ser-Gly-Arg), and this sequence matched with the amino acid residues 143-147 of chicken ß-actin (GenBank: CAA25004.1). The synthetic peptide YASGR showed very high antioxidant activity against the peroxyl radical. Antioxidant activities of the free amino acids, confirmed that the tyrosine residue of this peptide was possibly responsible for antioxidant activity.
