RESUMEN

A novel nanomagnet modified with nickel ferrite nanoparticles (NPs) coated with hybrid chitosan (Cs-NiFe2O4) was synthesized using the co-precipitation method. The resulting nanomagnets were characterized using various techniques. The size of the nanomagnetic particles was estimated to be about 40 nm based on the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) pattern (using the Debye-Scherrer equation). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images indicated that the surface of Cs-NiFe2O4 NPs is flatter and smoother than the uncoated NiFe2O4 NPs. According to value stream mapping (VSM) analysis, the magnetization value of Cs-NiFe2O4 NPs (17.34 emu/g) was significantly lower than NiFe2O4 NPs (40.67 emu/g). The Cs-NiFe2O4 NPs indicated higher antibacterial properties than NiFe2O4 NPs and Cs. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of Cs-NiFe2O4 NPs against S. aureus and E. coli were 128 and 256 mg/mL, respectively. Antioxidant activity (evaluated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging test) for NiFe2O4 NPs and Cs-NiFe2O4 NPs at the concentration of 100 µg/mL were 35% and 42%, respectively. Consequently, the synthesized Cs-NiFe2O4 NPs can be proposed as a viable material for biomedical applications.

RESUMEN

The effect of an edible film based on sage seed gum (SSG) incorporating 3 % Zataria multiflora Boiss essential oil (ZEO) was investigated on the storage quality and shelf life of tiger-tooth croaker (Otolithes ruber) fillets during storage at 4 ± 1 °C compared to the control film (SSG film without ZEO) and the Cellophane. The SSG-ZEO film significantly decelerated microbial growth (evaluated by total viable count, total psychrotrophic count, pH, TVBN) and lipid oxidation (evaluated by TBARS) compared to the others (P ˂ 0.05). The antimicrobial activity of ZEO was the highest and the lowest on E. aerogenes (MIC: 0.196 µL/mL) and P. mirabilis (MIC: 0.977 µL/mL), respectively. E. aerogenes was identified as an indicator biogenic amine-producer in O. ruber fish at refrigerated temperature. The active film significantly lowered biogenic amine accumulation in the samples inoculated with E. aerogenes. A clear relationship was observed between the release of ZEO's phenolic compounds from the active film to the headspace and the reduction of microbial growth, lipid oxidation, and biogenic amine production in the samples. Consequently, SSG film containing 3 % ZEO is proposed as a biodegradable antimicrobial-antioxidant packaging to extend the shelf life and decrease the biogenic amine production in refrigerated seafood.

RESUMEN

In this paper, a theoretical framework relying on the reciprocity theorem is proposed to accurately design a spectrally-selective THz superstrate-loaded metamaterial absorber (SLMA) exhibiting wide-angle feature. By leveraging high-order Floquet harmonics in a generalized transmission line model characterizing the conventional metamaterial absorbers (MAs), it is demonstrated that MAs suffer from impedance mismatch, especially at near grazing angles. From an impedance matching viewpoint, this major challenge is tackled in this paper via two different designs, exploiting a magneto-electric anisotropic Huygens' metamaterial and a multilayer dielectric structure at a certain distance over the MA plane. The numerical results corroborate well the theoretical predictions, elucidating that the proposed SLMA significantly broadens the angular performance of the MA up to near grazing angles (about 80°), where high absorptivity is still achieved in both principal planes. The deteriorating effect of diffraction modes has been comprehensively analyzed. In comparison to the previous wide-angle MA reports based on intricate particle geometries and brute-force optimizations, the proposed design features a straightforward semi-analytical algorithm, which can also be re-developed for microwave, mid-infrared, and optical frequency bands and for any type of MA element. The proposed SLMA would be very promising for various wavelength-selective applications such as sensors and imaging.

RESUMEN

This study investigated the effects of an educational program designed to improve the knowledge and attitudes of senior dental students in an Iranian dental school about caring for patients with HIV/AIDS. As part of an extramural program in community dentistry, a new educational program about HIV/AIDS was developed at Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2009. The program consisted of two days' observation at the Consultation Center for Behavioral Diseases and a one-day workshop on infection control. A control group was selected from dental students at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. Before and after the intervention, students in both the intervention and control groups completed a questionnaire concerning their knowledge of and attitudes about HIV/AIDS. Students in the intervention group also expressed their opinions in a post-test questionnaire. An independent sample t-test was used for statistical analysis. In the control group, the means of students' knowledge and attitude scores did not differ significantly from pre-test to post-test. In the intervention group, however, the means of both knowledge and attitude scores on the post-test were significantly higher than on the pre-test (p=0.001 and p=0.009, respectively). In the intervention group, more than 96 percent of the students reported that they would completely follow infection control principles in future practice. This study concludes that the educational program improved the students' knowledge of and attitudes about HIV/AIDS and will have a positive effect on their future practice.
