RESUMEN

A new lactone, 7-epi-griffonilide (1), and six known compounds, 2, 3a - 3c, 4a and 4b, were isolated from the leaves of Bauhinia pentandra (Fabaceae). The structures elucidation of 1 and 2 were based on detailed 2D NMR techniques and spectral comparison with related compounds, leading to complete assignment of the 1H and 13C NMR spectra.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Bauhinia pentandrais popularly known as "mororó" and inhabits the Caatinga and Savannah biomes. OBJECTIVE: This paper reports the chemical composition of the essential and fatty oils of the leaves from B. pentandra. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation and the fixed oil by extraction with hexane, followed by saponification with KOH/MeOH, and methylation using MeOH/HCl. The constituents were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. RESULTS: The major constituent of the essential oil was the phytol (58.78% ±8.51%), and of the fatty oil were palmitic (29.03%), stearic (28.58%) and linolenic (10.53%) acids. CONCLUSION: Of the compounds identified in the essential oil, three are first reported in this species, and this is the first record of the chemical composition of the fixed oil.

RESUMEN

Two new diterpenes, 1 and 2, together with the known ent-15-oxo-kaur-16-en-18-oic acid (3), were isolated from the bark of Croton argyrophylloides. The structural characterization of 1 and 2 was determined on the basis of spectroscopic data interpretation. The cytotoxicity of each compound was evaluated against HL-60 (leukemia), MDAMB-435 (melanoma), SF-295 (glioblastoma), and HCT-8 (colon carcinoma) human tumor cell lines and against human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The hemolytic potential in mouse erythrocytes was also tested for 1-3.

RESUMEN

The present review focus in quinones found in species of Brazilian northeastern Capraria biflora, Lippia sidoides, Lippia microphylla and Tabebuia serratifolia. The review cover ethnopharmacological aspects including photography of species, chemical structure feature, NMR datea and biological properties. Chemical transformations of lapachol to form enamine derivatives and biological activities are discussed.

RESUMEN

Two new cucurbitane-type triterpenoids, 2beta,3beta,16alpha,20(R),25-pentahydroxy-9-methyl-19-norlanost-5-en-7,22-dione and 2beta,3beta,16alpha,20(R),25-pentahydroxy-9-methyl-19-norlanost-5-en-7,11,22-trione, were isolated from fruits of Cayaponia racemosa. The total (1)H and (13)C chemical shift assignment of these two closely related compounds is described, making use of one- and two-dimensional NMR techniques.

RESUMEN

Biocatalysis is an important adjunct to the chemical armamentarium that organic chemists may bring to bear for the synthesis of important intermediates and finished pharmaceutical and other commercial products. For most of the world however, such catalytic reagents are not an option due to their high cost and import limitations. Recent studies indicate that the use of locally available vegetables may offer an alternative opportunity for countries to investigate their local resources for the effective conduct of key synthetic transformations with significant economic and ecological implications. This review offers a brief overview of the field of microbial and plant biocatalysts, discusses the studies thus far on the use of intact plant materials for conducting synthetic chemical reactions, and considers some opportunities for future development.

RESUMEN

A new strychnobrasiline derivative, 12-hydroxy-10,11-dimethoxystrychnobrasiline 1, has been isolated from the stem barks of Strychnos mattogrossensis. Its structure was established by spectroscopy analysis (1D and 2D NMR, MS, IR, UV) and literature data comparison. Two other known indoline alkaloids were also obtained from the heartwood, 12-hydroxy-11-methoxystrychnobrasiline 2 and strychnobrasiline 3.
