RESUMEN

Correctly diagnosing and classifying seizures and epilepsies is vital to ensure a tailored approach to patients with epilepsy. The ILAE seizure classification consists of two main groups: focal and generalized. Establishing if a seizure is focal or generalized is essential to classify the epilepsy type and the epilepsy syndrome, providing more personalized treatment and counseling about prognosis. EEG is one of the most essential tools for this classification process and further localization of the epileptogenic focus. However, some EEG findings are misleading and may postpone the correct diagnosis and proper treatment. Knowing the most common EEG pitfalls in focal and generalized epilepsies is valuable for clinical practice, avoiding misinterpretations. Some atypical features can be challenging in focal epilepsies, such as secondary bilateral synchrony, focal epileptiform activity induced by hyperventilation and photic stimulation, and non-focal slowing. On the other hand, more than 60 % of persons with idiopathic generalized epilepsies have at least one type of atypical abnormality. In this manuscript, we describe and illustrate some of the most common EEG findings that can make even experienced epileptologists question not only where the epileptogenic focus is but also if the patient has focal or generalized epilepsy. This review summarizes the perils and provide some pearls to assist EEG readers.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is highly prevalent worldwide, affecting more than 43% of world population. The infection can be transmitted through different routes, like oral-oral, fecal-oral, and gastric-oral. Electrochemical sensors play a crucial role in the early detection of various substances, including biomolecules. In this study, the development of nanobody (Nb)-based immunosensor for the detection of H. pylori antigens in saliva samples was investigated. The D2_Nb was isolated and characterized using Western blot and ELISA and employed in the fabrication of the immunosensor. The sensor was prepared using gold screen-printed electrodes, with the immobilization of Nb achieved through chemical linkage using cysteamine-glutaraldehyde. The surface of the electrode was characterized using EIS, FTIR and SEM. Initially, the Nb-based immunosensor's performance was evaluated through cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and square wave voltammetry (SWV). The sensor exhibited excellent linearity with an R2 value of 0.96. However, further assessment with the DPV technique revealed both a low limit of detection (5.9 ng/mL, <1 cfu/mL) and high selectivity when exposed to a mixture of similar antigens. Moreover, the immunosensor demonstrated robust recovery rates (96.2%-103.4%) when spiked into artificial saliva and maintained its functionality when stored at room temperature for 24 days.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical predictors of positive genetic investigation in developmental and epileptic encephalopathies, beyond the influence of Dravet Syndrome. METHODS: The study included 98 patients diagnosed with developmental and epileptic encephalopathies. The patients underwent Sanger sequencing of SCN1A, Chromosomal Microarray Analysis, and Whole Exome Sequencing. The association of clinical variables with a positive genetic test was investigated using univariate and multivariate analysis. RESULTS: Genetic diagnosis was identified in 47 (48 %) patients with developmental and epileptic encephalopathies. Beyond Dravet Syndrome influence, first seizure in the context of fever (p < 0.01), seizures precipitated by temperature (p = 0.04), cognitive regression (p = 0.04), hypotonia (p < 0.01), and focal seizures (p = 0.03) increased the chances of a positive genetic investigation. In contrast, atonic seizures (p = 0.01) and generalized discharges on electroencephalogram (p = 0.02) decreased the chances. Dravet Syndrome was positively associated with a genetic developmental and epileptic encephalopathies etiology (p < 0.01), whereas epilepsy with myoclonic-atonic seizures (p = 0.01), developmental and epileptic encephalopathies with spike-wave activation in sleep (p = 0.04), and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (p = 0.03) were negatively associated. In multivariate analysis, the first seizure in the context of fever (p < 0.01) and hypotonia (p = 0.02) were positively, and atonic seizures (p = 0.01) were negatively and independently associated with a genetic etiology. CONCLUSION: The predictive variables of genetic investigation in developmental and epileptic encephalopathies are first seizure in the context of fever and hypotonia, whereas atonic seizures decrease the chances of finding a genetic cause for developmental and epileptic encephalopathies. Regarding epileptic syndromes, Dravet Syndrome is highly associated with a positive genetic test, whereas epilepsy with myoclonic-atonic seizures, developmental and epileptic encephalopathies with spike-wave activation in sleep, and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome are rarely associated with a positive genetic investigation.

INTRODUCTION: Reactance inversion (RI) has been associated with impaired peripheral airway function in persistent asthma. However, there is little to no data about the difference between asthmatic children with and without RI. This study aimed to detect clinical and lung function differences in moderate-severe asthmatic children with and without RI. METHODS: This study was conducted between 2021 and 2022 in asthmatic school-age children. Impulse oscillometry (IOS) and spirometry were performed according to ATS/ERS standards. RESULTS: A total of 62 patients, with a mean age of 8.4 years, 54.8% were males and were divided into three groups: group 1 (32.3%) with no RI, group 2 (27.4%) with RI but disappearing after bronchodilator test and group 3 (40.3%) with persistent RI after bronchodilator test. Children in groups 2 and 3 had significantly lower birth weights than in group 1. Group 2 had lower gestational age compared to group 1. FEV1 and FEF25-75 of forced vital capacity were significantly lower in groups 2 and 3. In group 3, R5, AX, R5-20, and R5-R20/R5 ratios were significantly higher. Bronchodilator responses (BDR) in X5c, AX, and R5-R20 were significantly different between groups and lower in group 3. CONCLUSION: RI is frequently found in children with moderate-severe persistent asthma, particularly in those with a history of prematurity or low birth weight. In some patients, RI disappears after the bronchodilator test; however, it, persists in those with the worst pulmonary function. RI could be a small airway dysfunction marker.

In this study, a hybrid material, MIL-53(Al)@CBS, was synthesized via the solvothermal method, involving the growth of MIL-53(Al) crystals on cocoa bean shell residues (CBS). Physicochemical characterization techniques, including TGA, BET, FTIR, XRD, and SEM, confirmed successful hybridization. MIL-53(Al)@CBS was employed as an adsorbent for antibiotics (oxytetracycline, tetracycline, chlortetracycline) separation from aqueous solutions. Parameters like pH, adsorbent dose, concentration, time, and temperature were systematically evaluated. FTIR revealed π-π interactions and hydrogen bonds between tetracyclines and the adsorbent. MIL-53(Al)@CBS exhibited adsorption, with removal rates up to 98.92%, 99.04%, and 98.24% for OTC, TC, and CTC, respectively. Kinetics suggested adsorption depends on active site availability, with TC adsorbing fastest. Microscopic models showed adsorption on three distinct active site types with different affinities without competition or adherence to the Langmuir hypothesis. Importantly, MIL-53(Al)@CBS maintained high adsorption capacity even after ten washing cycles, highlighting its potential for water treatment.

Schizophrenia is a chronic neurodevelopmental disorder with an inflammatory/prooxidant component. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has been evaluated in schizophrenia as an adjuvant to antipsychotics, but its role as a preventive strategy has not been sufficiently explored. We aimed to evaluate the potential of NAC administration in two-time windows before the onset of symptoms in a schizophrenia-like maternal immune stimulation (MIS) rat model. Pregnant Wistar rats were injected with Poly I:C or Saline on gestational day (GD) 15. Three different preventive approaches were evaluated: 1) NAC treatment during periadolescence in the offspring (from postnatal day [PND] 35 to 49); 2) NAC treatment during pregnancy after MIS challenge until delivery (GD15-21); and 3) NAC treatment throughout all pregnancy (GD1-21). At postnatal day (PND) 70, prepulse inhibition (PPI) and anxiety levels were evaluated. In vivo magnetic resonance (MR) imaging was acquired on PND100 to assess structural changes in gray and white matter, and brain metabolite concentrations. Additionally, inflammation and oxidative stress (IOS) markers were measured ex vivo in selected brain regions. MIS offspring showed behavioral, neuroanatomical, and biochemical alterations. Interestingly, NAC treatment during periadolescence prevented PPI deficits and partially counteracted some biochemical imbalances. Moreover, NAC treatments during pregnancy not only replicated the beneficial outcomes reported by the treatment in periadolescence, but also prevented some neuroanatomical deficits, including reductions in hippocampal and corpus callosum volumes. This study suggests that early reduction of inflammation and prooxidation could help prevent the onset of schizophrenia-like symptoms, supporting the importance of anti-IOS compounds in ameliorating this disorder.

LAY ABSTRACT: An earlier diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder might lead to earlier intervention. However, people living in Latin American and Caribbean countries do not have much knowledge about autism spectrum disorder symptoms. It has been suggested that the older a child is when diagnosed, the fewer opportunities he or she will have to receive services. We asked 2520 caregivers of autistic children in six different Latin America and Caribbean Countries, the child's age when they noticed some developmental delays and their child's age when they received their first autism spectrum disorder diagnosis. Results indicate that, on average, caregivers were concerned about their child's development by 22 months of age; however, the diagnosis was received when the child was 46 months of age. In addition, older children with better language abilities and public health coverage (opposed to private health coverage) were diagnosed later. On the contrary, children with other medical problems and more severe behaviors received an earlier diagnosis. In our study, children were diagnosed around the time they entered formal schooling, delaying the access to early intervention programs. In summary, the characteristics of the autistic person and the type of health coverage influence the age of diagnosis in children living in Latin America and Caribbean Countries.

Prenatal infections and cannabis use during adolescence are well-recognized risk factors for schizophrenia. As inflammation and oxidative stress (OS) contribute to this disorder, anti-inflammatory drugs have been proposed as potential therapies. This study aimed to evaluate the association between delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and schizophrenia-like abnormalities in a maternal immune activation (MIA) model. Additionally, we assessed the preventive effect of cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychotropic/anti-inflammatory cannabinoid. THC and/or CBD were administered to Saline- and MIA-offspring during periadolescence. At adulthood, THC-exposed MIA-offspring showed significant improvements in sensorimotor gating deficits. Structural and metabolic brain changes were evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging, revealing cortical shrinkage in Saline- and enlargement in MIA-offspring after THC-exposure. Additionally, MIA-offspring displayed enlarged ventricles and decreased hippocampus, which were partially reverted by both cannabinoids. CBD prevented THC-induced reduction in the corpus callosum, despite affecting white matter structure. Post-mortem studies revealed detrimental effects of THC, including increased inflammation and oxidative stress. CBD partially reverted these pro-inflammatory alterations and modulated THC's effects on the endocannabinoid system. In conclusion, contrary to expectations, THC exhibited greater behavioural and morphometric benefits, despite promoting a pro-inflammatory state that CBD partially reverted. Further research is needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms involved in the observed benefits of THC.

It cannot be assumed that the experience of having an autistic child is the same across countries since demographic and systemic factors are as diverse as the manifestation of ASD symptomatology. This study explores the lived experiences of 20 Venezuelan parents after receiving an autism diagnosis for their child. Applied thematic analysis was used to analyze parental attitudes, challenges in identifying their child's delay, access to diagnostic services, beliefs towards autism, professional evaluations, family support, and perceptions toward health and educational services for autistic children. Venezuelan parents reported a generalized lack of autism awareness, an unsupportive school system, and judgment from their extended family. Despite the universal health coverage in the country, Venezuelan parents commented on the scarcity of services, as well as the lengthy and costly processes to receive an ASD diagnosis. The results support previous research findings showing that socioeconomic factors influence how parents experience the process of obtaining an autism diagnosis for their children. For most Venezuelan parents, it might imply a long journey in which limited resources and knowledge about autism will determine its route and length. For parents, cultural values and spiritual and religious beliefs will serve as both coping mechanisms and barriers to accessing services.

Sexual violence victimization (SVV) is a significant public health concern. SVV research often focuses on college-attending White women's experiences, resulting in a knowledge gap regarding the experiences of ethnic minority groups, including the Latino community - the largest minority group in the US. To develop more culturally sensitive SV prevention efforts, the current study reviewed research focused on the prevalence rates of SVV among Latino people. The authors searched for published articles in PubMed, PsycINFO, and the reference sections of relevant articles published from 2011 to 2022. Articles were deemed eligible if they presented SVV prevalence rates for Latino participants; 39 articles were included in the review. The most frequently assessed aspect of SVV among Latino people was whether they had ever been victimized. The average prevalence rate across articles was 16.0%. Additionally, researchers examined the prevalence rates of unwanted touching, sexual coercion, and completed rape among Latino individuals. Few articles examined SVV prevalence rates among sexual and gender minority Latinos; those that did found higher SVV rates among those groups. SVV is a prevalent issue within the Latino community, with women and sexual minorities facing an even greater risk. Moving forward, studying the contextual factors of SVV among Latino people and developing culturally sensitive interventions tailored to this population are needed.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the predictive value of abdominal circumference growth velocity (ACGV) between the second and third trimesters to predict adverse perinatal outcomes in a cohort of small-for-gestational-age fetuses without evidence of placental insufficiency (i.e. fetal growth restriction). MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a single-center retrospective cohort study of all singleton pregnancies with small-for-gestational-age fetuses diagnosed and delivered at a quaternary institution. Crude and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated via logistic regression models to assess the potential association between abnormal ACGV (i.e. ≤10th centile) and adverse perinatal outcomes defined as a composite outcome (i.e. umbilical artery pH <7.1, 5-min Apgar score <7, admission to the neonatal intensive care unit, hypoglycemia, intrapartum fetal distress requiring expedited delivery, and perinatal death). Furthermore, the area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC) of three logistic regression models based on estimated fetal weight and ACGV for predicting the composite outcome is also reported. RESULTS: A total of 154 pregnancies were included for analysis. The median birthweight for the cohort was 2,437 g (interquartile range [IQR] 2280, 2635). Overall, the primary composite outcome was relatively common (29.2%). In addition, there was a significant association between abnormal ACGV and adverse perinatal outcomes (OR 3.37, 95% CI 1.60, 7.13; adjusted OR 4.30, 95% CI 1.77, 10.49). Likewise, the AUC for the ACGV was marginally higher (0.64) than the estimated fetal weight (0.54) and ACGV + estimated fetal weight (0.54). Still, no significant difference was detected between the curves (p = 0.297). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that an ACGV below the 10th centile is a risk factor for adverse perinatal outcomes among small-for-gestational-age fetuses.

BACKGROUND: Misinformation is known to affect norms, attitudes, and intentions to engage with healthy behaviors. Evidence strongly supports that Spanish speakers may be particularly affected by misinformation and its outcomes, yet current insights into the scope and scale of misinformation is primarily ethnocentric, with greater emphasis on English-language design. OBJECTIVE: This study applies Natural Language Processing (NLP) to analyze a corpus of English/Spanish tweets about vaccines, broadly defined, for misinformation indicators. METHODS: We analyzed NEnglish = 247,140 and NSpanish = 104,445 tweets using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic models with Coherence score calculation (model fit) with a Mallet adjustment (topic optimization). We used informal coding to name computer-identified topics and compare misinformation scope and scale between languages. RESULTS: The LDA analysis yielded a 12-topic solution for English and a 14-topic solution for Spanish. Both corpora contained overlapping misinformation, including uncertainty of research guiding policy recommendations or standing in support of antivax movements. However, the Spanish data were positioned in a global context, where misinformation was directed at government equity and disparate vaccine distribution. CONCLUSION: Our findings support that misinformation is a global issue. However, misinformation may vary depending on culture and language. As such, tailored strategies to combat misinformation in digital planes are strongly encouraged.

Pancreatic cancer cells with mutant KRAS require strong basal autophagy for viability and growth. Here, we observed that some processes that allow the maintenance of basal autophagy in pancreatic cancer cells are controlled by protein methylation. Thus, by maintaining the methylation status of proteins such as PP2A and MRAS, these cells can sustain their autophagic activity. Protein methylation disruption by a hypomethylating treatment (HMT), which depletes cellular S-adenosylmethionine levels while inducing S-adenosylhomocysteine accumulation, resulted in autophagy inhibition and endoplasmic reticulum stress-induced apoptosis in pancreatic cancer cells. We observed that by reducing the membrane localization of MRAS, hypomethylation conditions produced an imbalance in KRAS signaling, resulting in the partial inactivation of ERK and hyperactivation of the PI3K/AKT-mTORC1 pathway. Interestingly, HMT impeded CRAF activation by disrupting the ternary SHOC2 complex (SHOC2/MRAS/PP1), which functions as a CRAF-S259 holophosphatase. The demethylation events that resulted in PP2A inactivation also favored autophagy inhibition by preventing ULK1 activation while restoring the cytoplasmic retention of the MiT/TFE transcription factors. Since autophagy provides pancreatic cancer cells with metabolic plasticity to cope with various metabolic stress conditions, while at the same time promoting their pathogenesis and resistance to KRAS pathway inhibitors, this hypomethylating treatment could represent a therapeutic opportunity for pancreatic adenocarcinomas.

The primary motor cortex (M1) is broadly acknowledged for its crucial role in executing voluntary movements. Yet, its contributions to cognitive and sensory functions remain largely unexplored. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive neurostimulation method that can modify brain activity, thereby enabling the establishment of a causal link between M1 activity and behavior. This study aimed to investigate the online effects of tDCS over M1 on cognitive-motor and sensory-motor functions. Sixty-four healthy participants underwent either anodal or sham tDCS while concurrently performing a set of standardized robotic tasks. These tasks provided sensitive and objective assessments of brain functions, including action selection, inhibitory control, cognitive control of visuomotor skills, proprioceptive sense, and bimanual coordination. Our results revealed that anodal tDCS applied to M1 enhances decision-making capacity in selecting appropriate motor actions and avoiding distractors compared to sham stimulation, suggesting improved action selection and inhibitory control capabilities. Furthermore, anodal tDCS reduces the movement time required to accomplish bimanual movements, suggesting enhanced bimanual performance. However, we found no impact of anodal tDCS on cognitive control of visuomotor skills and proprioceptive sense. This study suggests that augmenting M1 activity via anodal tDCS influences cognitive-motor and sensory-motor functions in a task-dependent manner.

This investigation examines the transport of metal- and pesticide-polluted dust emitted by one of the most relevant agricultural areas of Northwestern Mexico. In the contaminated area, an excessive water extraction of the aquifer and seawater intrusion caused the abandonment of fields, which are pollutant-loaded dust emitters. We used air mass forward trajectories (HYSPLIT) model to obtain particle trajectories in the wind and the use of banned pesticides as geochemical tracers for dust transported by wind. Fifty dust samples from 10 agriculture fields and 26 roof dust of a city close to the agricultural area were analyzed for their contents of zirconium, lead, arsenic, zinc, copper, iron, manganese, vanadium, and titanium, by portable X-ray fluorescence. Nine pesticides were analyzed in the roof dust and agricultural soil samples by gas chromatography. Results show that the distribution of metals was significantly different between active and abandoned fields. Arsenic-lead-copper was mainly concentrated in abandoned fields, while zinc-iron-manganese-titanium was dominant in active fields. Two potential sources of metal contamination were found by principal component analysis (PCA): (I) a mixture of traffic and agricultural sources and (II) a group related to agricultural activities. The occurrence of banned pesticides in dust deposited on roofs collected at nearby cities confirms the atmospheric transport from the agricultural area. The HYSPLIT results indicated that the dust emitted from agricultural fields can reach up to the neighboring states of Sonora, Mexico, and the USA. The impacts that these emissions can have on human health should be studied in future research.

BACKGROUND: Infantile epileptic spasms syndrome (IESS) is a rare but severe condition affecting children early and is usually secondary to an identifiable brain disorder. It is related to psychomotor deterioration in childhood and epilepsy in adult life. Treatment is challenging as infantile spasms may not respond to most antiseizure medication, and relapse is frequent. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the literature regarding treatment of IESS and provide a practical guidance to a healthcare system with limited resources. METHODS: An expert committee from the Brazilian Society of Child Neurology reviewed and discussed relevant scientific evidence in the treatment of IESS regarding the drugs available in Brazil. RESULTS: Oral prednisolone and vigabatrin are the most common drugs used as first-line therapy; they are efficient and affordable therapy as both are available in the Brazilian unified health system (SUS, in the Portuguese acronym). Intramuscular adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) presents similar efficacy as oral prednisolone but has a higher cost and is not available in Brazil. Other antiseizure medications such as topiramate, levetiracetam, or benzodiazepines have limited response and are prescribed as adjuvant therapy. If the health service has nutritionists, a ketogenic diet should be implemented for those not responding to hormonal and vigabatrin treatment. Epilepsy surgery is mainly indicated for patients with focal lesions that do not respond to pharmacological therapy. CONCLUSION: Early treatment of IESS with efficient drugs is feasible in our country. Using standard protocols increases the odds of achieving complete cessation in a shorter time and decreases relapse.


ANTECEDENTES: A síndrome do espasmo epiléptico infantil (IESS) é uma condição rara, mas grave, que afeta crianças precocemente e geralmente é secundária a um distúrbio cerebral identificável, estando relacionada a deterioração psicomotora na infância e a epilepsia na vida adulta. O tratamento é desafiador, pois os espasmos infantis podem não responder à maioria dos medicamentos anticrises e as recidivas são frequentes. OBJETIVO: Avaliar a literatura sobre o tratamento de IESS e fornecer uma orientação prática para um sistema de saúde com recursos limitados. MéTODOS: Um comitê de especialistas da Sociedade Brasileira de Neurologia Infantil revisou e discutiu evidências científicas relevantes no tratamento da IESS em relação aos medicamentos disponíveis no Brasil. RESULTADOS: Prednisolona oral e vigabatrina são os fármacos mais comumente usados como terapia de primeira linha; são eficientes e acessíveis, já que ambos estão disponíveis no sistema único de saúde brasileiro (SUS). O ACTH intramuscular apresenta eficácia semelhante à prednisolona oral, mas tem custo mais elevado e não está disponível no Brasil. Outros medicamentos anticonvulsivos, como topiramato, levetiracetam ou benzodiazepínicos, têm resposta limitada e são prescritos como terapia adjuvante. Se o serviço de saúde tiver nutricionista, deve-se implementar dieta cetogênica para aqueles que não respondem ao tratamento hormonal e vigabatrina. A cirurgia de epilepsia é indicada principalmente para pacientes com lesões focais que não respondem à terapia farmacológica. CONCLUSãO: O tratamento precoce da IESS com fármacos eficazes é factível em nosso meio. O uso de protocolos padronizados aumenta as chances de alcançar a cessação completa em um tempo menor e diminui a recaída.

Ketogenic dietary therapies (KDTs) are a safe and effective treatment for pharmacoresistant epilepsy in children. There are four principal types of KDTs: the classic KD, the modified Atkins diet (MAD), the medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) diet, and the low glycemic index diet (LGID). The International Ketogenic Diet Study Group recommends managing KDTs in children with epilepsy. However, there are no guidelines that address the specific needs of the Brazilian population. Thus, the Brazilian Child Neurology Association elaborated on these recommendations with the goal of stimulating and expanding the use of the KD in Brazil.


As terapias dietéticas cetogênicas (TDC) são um tratamento seguro e eficaz para epilepsia farmacorresistente em crianças. Existem quatro tipos principais de TDCs: a dieta cetogênica (DC) clássica, a dieta de Atkins modificada (DAM), a dieta de triglicerídeos de cadeia média (DTCM) e a dieta de baixo índice glicêmico (DBIG). O Grupo Internacional de Estudos de Dietas Cetogênicas (International Ketogenic Diet Study Group) propõe recomendações para o manejo da DC em crianças com epilepsia. No entanto, faltam diretrizes que contemplem as necessidades específicas da população brasileira. Assim, a Associação Brasileira de Neurologia Infantil elaborou essas recomendações com o objetivo de estimular e expandir o uso da DC no Brasil.

Several studies performed on human subjects have examined the effects of adolescent cannabis consumption on brain structure or function using brain imaging techniques. However, the evidence from these studies is usually heterogenous and affected by several confounding variables. Animal models of adolescent cannabinoid exposure may help to overcome these difficulties. In this exploratory study, we aim to increase our understanding of the protracted effects of adolescent Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in rats of both sexes using magnetic resonance (MR) to obtain volumetric data, assess grey and white matter microstructure with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and measure brain metabolites with 1H-MR spectroscopy (MRS); in addition, we studied brain function using positron emission tomography (PET) with 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-d-glucose as the tracer. THC-exposed rats exhibited volumetric and microstructural alterations in the striatum, globus pallidus, lateral ventricles, thalamus, and septal nuclei in a sex-specific manner. THC administration also reduced fractional anisotropy in several white matter tracts, prominently in rostral sections, while in vivo MRS identified lower levels of cortical choline compounds. THC-treated males had increased metabolism in the cerebellum and olfactory bulb and decreased metabolism in the cingulate cortex. By contrast, THC-treated females showed hypermetabolism in a cluster of voxels comprising the entorhinal piriform cortices and in the cingulate cortex. These results indicate that mild THC exposure during adolescence leaves a lingering mark on brain structure and function in a sex-dependant manner. Some of the changes found here resemble those observed in human studies and highlight the importance of studying sex-specific effects in cannabinoid research.
