Glycosamine is an amino-monosaccharide present in connective and cartilage tissues that contribute to the maintenance, resistance, flexibility, and elasticity of these tissues. This study aimed to determine the in vivo effects of glucosamine sulphate (GS) on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) of ovariectomised rats (OVX).Thirty-two rats were distributed into four groups as follows: G1, sham-OVX+saline solution; G2, sham-OVX+glucosamine sulphate (80mg/kg) - oral administration; G3, OVX+saline solution; G4, OVX+glucosamine sulphate (80mg/kg) - oral administration. Animals were treated for seven days. The TMJ was removed and stained with toluidine blue. The thickness of the cartilage layers and cytokines IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α levels were determined by histomorphometry and immunoassay, respectively. The administration of GS to OVX females did not change the thickness of condylar cartilage when compared with the other groups (p>0.05). There was an increase in the total cartilage thickness in sham-OVX females. IL-1ß and TNF-α levels were significantly lower in sham-OVX females than in OVX females, indicating that ovariectomy acts as potent cytokine inducer. IL-6 levels were significantly higher in sham-OVX females. GS did not affect cytokine production in OVX females (p>0.05). In conclusion, the administration of GS did not affect cytokine levels, but did induce an increase in the total thickness of the TMJ condylar cartilage in sham-OVX rats.

Os colágenos tipos I e III apresentam diferentes tonalidades de birrefringência em cortes histológicos corados com Picrosirius red e analisados em microscópio sob luz polarizada. Com base nessa propriedade, os colágenos podem ser quantificados por histomorfometria. Entretanto, são muitas as variáveis que podem afetar a distribuição das cores na imagem histológica, e a escolha adequada dos parâmetros de análise têm grande influência no resultado final. O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar a quantificação histomorfométrica de colágeno em pele equina pela morfometria por contagem de pontos e pela segmentação de cor com diversas configurações, a fim de se determinar o melhor método de avaliação. Para a morfometria por contagem de pontos, foram utilizadas três gratículas diferentes (391, 588 e 792 pontos de interseções) e, para a segmentação de cor, seis combinações de hue e brightness no software ImageJ. Os valores foram submetidos ao teste de Friedman, seguido pelo teste de Tukey com 5% de significância. Os resultados demonstraram que a quantificação dos colágenos na gratícula de 792 pontos foi equivalente aos resultados da segmentação de cor com brightness de 1-255 e hue de 0-42 e 43-120 para os colágenos tipos I e III, respectivamente. Dessa forma, conclui-se que a análise automática da segmentação de cor, utilizando configuração adequada para brightness e hue, pode substituir a morfometria por contagem de pontos de forma confiável e segura.(AU)


The types I and III collagens present different tonalities of birefringence in histological sections stained with Picrosirius red, that can be analyzed under a polarized light microscope. Based on this property, collagens can be quantified by histomorphometry. However, many variables can affect the color distribution in the histological image, and the appropriate choice of the analysis parameters have a significant influence on the final result. The objective of this study was to compare the histomorphometric quantification of collagen in the equine skin by counting points planimetry and color segmentation with different configurations to determine the best method of evaluation. For planimetry, three different graticules (391, 588 and 792 intersections) were used and, for color segmentation, six combinations of hue and brightness in ImageJ software. The values were submitted to the Friedman test followed by Tukey with 5% significance. The results showed that the quantification of collagens in the graticule of 792 intersections was equivalent to the results of color segmentation with a brightness of 1-255 and hue of 0-42 and 43-120 for collagens type I and III, respectively. Automatic analysis of the color segmentation, using suitable configuration for brightness and hue can replace the counting points planimetry reliably and safely.(AU)

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Obesity is a metabolic disorder that predisposes patients to numerous diseases and has become a major global public-health concern. Animal models of diet-induced obesity (DIO) are frequently used to study obesity, but which DIO model most accurately reflects the pathology of human obesity remains unclear. In this study, we designed a diet based on the human Western diet (WD) and compared it with the cafeteria diet (CAF) and high-fat diet (HFD) in order to evaluate which diet most closely mirrors human obesity. METHODS: Wistar rats were fed four different diets (WD, CAF, HFD and a low-fat diet) for 18 weeks. Metabolic parameters and gut microbiota changes were then characterized. RESULTS: Rats fed the four different diets exhibited completely different phenotypes, highlighting the importance of diet selection. This study also revealed that WD most effectively induced obesity and obesity-related disorders, and thus proved to be a robust model of human obesity. Moreover, WD-fed rats developed obesity and obesity-related comorbidities independent of major alterations in gut microbiota composition (dysbiosis), whereas CAF-fed rats developed the greatest dysbiosis independent of obesity. We also characterized gut microbiota after feeding on these four different diets and identified five genera that might be involved in the pathogenesis of obesity. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that diet, and not the obese state, was the major driving force behind gut microbiota changes. Moreover, the marked dysbiosis observed in CAF-fed rats might have resulted from the presence of several additives present in the CAF diet, or even a lack of essential vitamins and minerals. Based on our findings, we recommend the use of the prototypic WD (designed here) in DIO models. Conversely, CAF could be used to investigate the effects of excessive consumption of industrially produced and highly processed foods, which are characteristic of Western society.

Achyrocline satureioides is a medicinal plant widely used in South America that exhibits a well-documented antioxidant activity. Such activity has been related to their main aglycone flavonoids quercetin, luteolin, and 3-O-methylquercetin (3MQ). This study addresses the development of antioxidant hydrogels containing an A. satureioides extract-loaded nanoemulsions aimed at topical application. The systems investigated were A. satureioides extract-loaded nanoemulsions (ASNE) obtained by spontaneous emulsification procedure formulated in semisolid hydrogels composed of Carbopol® Ultrez 20 (HASNE). Hydrogels exhibit a non-Newtonian pseudoplastic behavior. A higher release of 3MQ from ASNE (3.61µg/cm(2)/h) was observed when compared with HASNE (2.83µg/cm(2)/h). Different parameters that may have an influence on the retention of flavonoids into the skin were investigated by using a Franz-type diffusion cells. Indeed, the amount of formulation applied on donor compartment was found to play a crucial role. At the optimized conditions, retention of approximately 2µg/cm(2) of flavonoids was detected into the skin. A higher retention of 3MQ was detected (approximately 1.0µg/cm(2)) in comparison with the other flavonoids. Finally, a protection the porcine ear skin by formulations, against oxidative stress generated by UVA/UVB light was demonstrated by means of TBARS, protein carbonylation, and protein thiol content assays. The overall results showed the potential of the formulations developed in this study for the prevention of oxidative stress on the skin.

Among arthropods, ticks of the genus Amblyomma are of great medical and veterinary importance and present phylogenetic and taxonomic divergences given polymorphisms and phenotypic plasticity between subpopulations. Generally, the male reproductive system and spermatozoon exhibit diversified morphology and ultrastructure species-specific, bringing new possibilities for phylogenetic and taxonomic issues. Therefore, the present study aimed to describe and compare the morphology of the male reproductive system and its germ cells of Amblyomma aureolatum, A. sculptum, and A. triste, intending to identify possible diagnostic features. Couples of the three tick's species were kept in colony, infested on rabbits and collected over 12 days of feeding. The males had their reproductive systems dissected, fixed and processed for histology and scanning electron microscopy. The results obtained here allowed the description of spermiogenesis stages and the comparison of spermatids morphology in the last stage of development. Furthermore, the testis of A. triste present an isthmus connecting the distal region of both, while in the other two species this structure could not be observed. Some anatomical features were identified which can be used for taxonomic and phylogenetic studies, like the presence or absence of the isthmus connecting testis, spV cell shape, the shape of the operculum and the presence or absence of the rim on its base.

RESUMO O uso de esterco bovino é de suma importância para os agricultores familiares que produzem coentro na região de Mossoró-RN, pois esse insumo é amplamente disponível e utilizado pelos agricultores. Objetivando-se avaliar o Rendimento do coentro fertilizado com esterco bovino em diferentes doses e tempos de incorporação ao solo foi conduzido um experimento no período de setembro a novembro de 2011, na Fazenda Experimental Rafael Fernandes, da Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido - UFERSA, Brasil. Os tratamentos consistiram da combinação de quatro doses de esterco bovino incorporadas ao solo: 15,0; 30,0; 45,0 e 60,0 t ha-1 em base seca, com quatro tempos de incorporação: 28; 49; 64 e 80 dias antes da semeadura do coentro - DAS, mais um tratamento controle (ausência de adubação). O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos completos casualizados com os tratamentos arranjados em esquema fatorial 4 x 4 + 1 com 3 repetições. A cultivar de coentro utilizado foi a Verdão e as variáveis determinadas foram altura e número de hastes por planta e rendimento de coentro. O coentro respondeu à aplicação de esterco bovino, produzindo rendimentos máximos de 6453 e 6349 kg ha-1 de massa verde, com a dose de 60 t ha-1 e aos quarenta e seis dias de incorporação antes da semeadura, respectivamente.


ABSTRACT The use of manure is very important to family farmers who produce coriander in the region of Mossoró-RN, because this input is widely available and used by farmers. Aiming to evaluate the yield of the coriander fertilized with manure at different doses and incorporation times in the soil, a trial was conducted from September to November 2011, at the Experimental Farm Rafael Fernandes in the Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido (UFERSA), Mossoró-RN, Brazil. The treatments consisted on the combination of four levels of manure incorporated into the soil: 15.0; 30.0; 45.0 and 60.0 t ha-1 at dry basis, with four incorporation times: 28; 49; 64 and 80 days before the coriander"s sowing - DAS, plus a control treatment (without fertilization). The experimental design was a randomized complete block with treatments arranged in a 4 x 4 + 1, with three replications. The coriander planted was the "Verdão" and the specific variables were height and number of stalks per plant and yield of the coriander. The coriander responded to the application of the manure, producing maximum yields of 6453 and 6349 kg ha-1 of fresh mass, with the dose of 60 t ha-1 and at forty-six days of incorporation before the sowing, respectively.

RESUMOO melão de São Caetano, planta trepadeira originaria do leste indiano e sul da Índia, é encontrada no bioma caatinga. Neste trabalho objetivou-se avaliar a biometria dos frutos e o número de sementes por fruto do melão de São Caetano. Os frutos foram coletados em área de vegetação nativa do campus da Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido (UFERSA), situada no município de Mossoró, RN, seguindo para o laboratório de fitotecnia para a determinação das seguintes características: comprimento, diâmetro e peso dos frutos, bem como o número de sementes por fruto. As análises descritivas e gráficas foram realizadas utilizando o pacote estatístico software R-project. As variáveis, comprimento e diâmetro apresentaram baixa amplitude de variação e bons valores de coeficiente de variação. Já o peso do fruto e o número de sementes por fruto mostraram alta amplitude de variação. Verificou-se alto grau de simetria e distribuição mesocúrtica para todas as características avaliadas nesse estudo. Constatou-se também a correlação linear simples positiva significativa entre o comprimento e o diâmetro, e não significativa entre o peso e o número de sementes por fruto, e que os dados referentes a todas as características do fruto do melão de São Caetano avaliadas neste trabalho se ajustaram à distribuição normal de probabilidade, o que permite a realização de inferências com base estatística.


ABSTRACTThe melon from Sao Caetano is a climbing plant, originally from India and South East India and is found in the savanna biome. This study aimed to evaluate the biometric fruit and the number of seeds per fruit of the melon Sao Caetano. The fruits were collected inside a native vegetation area of the campus at the Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido (UFERSA), located in the city of Mossoró, RN. They were then taken to the laboratory of crop science, for the determination of the following characteristics: length, diameter and fruit weight as well as number of seeds per fruit. The descriptive and graphical analyzes were performed by using the statistical package R -project software. The length and diameter variables exhibited a low amplitude variation and a good value for the coefficient of variation. However, the fruit weight and number of seeds per fruit showed a high amplitude variation. There was a high degree of symmetry and a flattened distribution for all traits evaluated in this study. It was also found significant positive simple linear correlation between the length and diameter, and no significant difference between the weight and number of seeds per fruit. The data related to all features of the São Caetano melon fruit evaluated in this study were adjusted to normal distribution of probability which allows the performance of interferences with statistical basis.

Autism and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are, respectively, neurodevelopmental and degenerative diseases with an increasing epidemiological burden. The AD-associated amyloid-ß precursor protein-α has been shown to be elevated in severe autism, leading to the 'anabolic hypothesis' of its etiology. Here we performed a focused microarray analysis of genes belonging to NOTCH and WNT signaling cascades, as well as genes related to AD and apoptosis pathways in cerebellar samples from autistic individuals, to provide further evidence for pathological relevance of these cascades for autism. By using the limma package from R and false discovery rate, we demonstrated that 31% (116 out of 374) of the genes belonging to these pathways displayed significant changes in expression (corrected P-values <0.05), with mitochondria-related genes being the most downregulated. We also found upregulation of GRIN1, the channel-forming subunit of NMDA glutamate receptors, and MAP3K1, known activator of the JNK and ERK pathways with anti-apoptotic effect. Expression of PSEN2 (presinilin 2) and APBB1 (or F65) were significantly lower when compared with control samples. Based on these results, we propose a model of NMDA glutamate receptor-mediated ERK activation of α-secretase activity and mitochondrial adaptation to apoptosis that may explain the early brain overgrowth and disruption of synaptic plasticity and connectome in autism. Finally, systems pharmacology analyses of the model that integrates all these genes together (NOWADA) highlighted magnesium (Mg(2+)) and rapamycin as most efficient drugs to target this network model in silico. Their potential therapeutic application, in the context of autism, is therefore discussed.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is recognized world-wide as an aggressive disease with poor prognosis in patients with or without resection. Further knowledge about the biological mechanisms of PDAC is necessary to enable the identification of novel molecular markers and therapeutic targets for early diagnosis and improved treatment. Transcription factors are the final effectors of signaling pathways and regulate a number of cellular functions. Changes in their expression may contribute to cellular transformation and tumor progression. Thus, the aim of the present study was to identify the Master Regulators (MRs) of transcription potentially involved in PDAC disease. To achieve this goal, we utilized microarray data to correlate MR genes with the tumor phenotype. Analyses were performed with RTN, Limma, and Survival packages in the R environment. We identified Tubby-like protein 3 (TULP3) as a MR of transcription in PDAC samples. The prognostic value of TULP3 was assessed in three independent cohort analyses. Our data demonstrated that pancreatic cancer patients exhibiting high transcriptional levels of TULP3 showed a poor overall survival rate. High expression levels of TULP3 may play an essential role in pancreatic cancer progression and possibly lead to a poor clinical outcome. Our results highlight the potential use of TULP3 as a clinical prognostic biomarker for pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

Challenging of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) with lipopolysaccharides (LPS) has been shown to activate monocytes and macrophages, leading to the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) is an important enzyme that may play a central role in the response to oxidative stress. 47C> T SNP of the SOD2 gene, the -9Val MnSOD is less efficient than the -9Ala version. We have previously characterized the cellular redox status of human PBMCs expressing either -9Ala (CC) or -9Val (TT) SOD2 and analyzed the responses of these cells to oxidative stress induced by LPS. Due to the observed alterations in the activities of these antioxidant enzymes, we decided to investigate their immunocontent and analyze the production of intracellular oxidants, as well as any resulting DNA damage. PBMCs were isolated from the blood of 30 healthy human volunteers (15 volunteers per allele). We then analyzed levels of nitrite, DNA damage by comet assay, TNF-α, carboxymethyl lysine and nitrotyrosine and assessed production of intracellular reactive species by the DCFH-DA-based assay and western blots were used to analyze protein levels. Our results show that there occurs an increase in nitric oxide production in both allele groups after challenge with LPS. A significant increase in DNA damage was observed in PBMCs after an 8-h LPS challenge. Cells expressing the SOD2 47C allele quickly adapt to a more intense metabolism by upregulating cellular detoxification mechanisms. However, when these cells are stressed over a long period, they accumulate a large quantity of toxic metabolic byproducts.

3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA lyase (HL) deficiency is a disorder biochemically characterized by the predominant accumulation of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutarate (HMG), 3-methylglutarate (MGA), 3-methylglutaconate and 3-hydroxyisovalerate in tissues and biological fluids of the affected patients. Neurological symptoms and hepatopathy are commonly found in HL deficiency, especially during metabolic crises. Since the mechanisms of tissue damage in this disorder are not well understood, in the present study we evaluated the ex vivo effects of acute administration of HMG and MGA on important parameters of oxidative stress in cerebral cortex and liver from young rats. In vivo administration of HMG and MGA provoked an increase of carbonyl and carboxy-methyl-lysine formation in cerebral cortex, but not in liver, indicating that these metabolites induce protein oxidative damage in the brain. We also verified that HMG and MGA significantly decreased glutathione concentrations in both cerebral cortex and liver, implying a reduction of antioxidant defenses. Furthermore, HMG and MGA increased 2',7'-dichlorofluorescin oxidation, but did not alter nitrate and nitrite content in cerebral cortex and liver, indicating that HMG and MGA effects are mainly mediated by reactive oxygen species. HMG and MGA also increased the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase in cerebral cortex and liver, whereas MGA decreased glutathione peroxidase activity in cerebral cortex. Our present data showing a disruption of redox homeostasis in cerebral cortex and liver caused by in vivo administration of HMG and MGA suggest that this pathomechanism may possibly contribute to the brain and liver abnormalities observed in HL-deficient patients.

This study aimed to evaluate whether natural or synthetic steroid hormones could directly modulate the activity of the different superoxide dismutase (SOD) isoforms found in human blood fractions without changing enzyme expression. Enzyme samples of human erythrocytes, the human platelet-rich plasma fraction (PRP) or isolated CuZnSOD, which was purified from human erythrocytes were pre-incubated with natural steroids (17ß-estradiol 17-acetate and progesterone) and their synthetic derivatives (ß-estradiol 3-benzoate and medroxyprogesterone 17-acetate). Then, CuZn and MnSOD activities were measured using the xanthine/xanthine oxidase/nitroblue tetrazolium method. Hormones had no effect on MnSOD activity from the PRP, but we show for the first time that natural and synthetic steroid hormones have a direct, bell-shaped effect on the activity of CuZnSOD from both male and female human erythrocytes. Low (physiological) hormone concentrations caused a dose-dependent increase in enzyme activity, which disappeared at higher hormone concentrations. In addition, the combination of synthetic and natural estrogens and progestins had a synergistic stimulatory effect on the activity of CuZnSOD from human erythrocytes. The molecular interaction between CuZnSOD and steroid hormones was preliminarily studied. Natural hormones did not change the electrophoretic mobility of SOD under denaturing conditions, but they did increase the absorption spectra of SOD in the 230-290 nm range. These data suggest that hormone-mediated modulation of CuZnSOD is related to subtle changes in protein conformation, possibly related to Trp and Phe residues. We propose that this effect may account for the physiological regulation of enzyme activity during conditions where steroid hormones undergo alterations as the ovulatory cycle.

The redox properties of the hydroethanol extract (EE) and its ethyl acetate (EAF) and hydromethanol (HMF) fractions obtained from Abarema cochliacarpos (Gomes) Barneby & Grimes stem bark were evaluated. EAF had the highest total phenol content (848.62 ± 78.18 mg g⁻¹), while EE showed the highest content of catechin (71.2 µg g⁻¹). EE, EAF and HMF exhibited the highest levels of antioxidant activity at 100 and 1000 µg mL⁻¹ when the non-enzymatic antioxidant potential was evaluated by the total reactive antioxidant potential, total antioxidant reactivity and nitric oxide scavenging assays. In addition, EAF and HMF showed SOD-like activity. The results for EE, EAF and HMF in this study showed that A. cochliacarpos (Gomes) Barneby & Grimes stem bark have redox properties and may be able to help the endogenous enzymatic and non-enzymatic systems to keep the redox balance.

Land-use alterations and pesticide run-offs are among the main causes for impairment in agricultural areas. We evaluated the influence of different land-uses (forest, pasture and intensive agriculture) on the water quality and on benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages on three occasions: in the dry season, wet season and at the end of the wet season. Macroinvertebrates responded to this gradient of impairment: agricultural sites had significantly lower richness numbers than forested and pasture sites, and all major invertebrate groups were significantly affected. Most taxa found in forested sites were found in pasture sites, but often with lower densities. In this case, the loss of habitats due to sedimentation and the lower complexity of substrates seem to be the disruptive force for the macroinvertebrate fauna.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between antioxidant biomarkers and food intake in elderly women. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Recreation Center for the Elderly in the city of Itajaí, Santa Catarina, Brazil. PARTICIPANTS: 73 elderly women with an average age of 71 years, 93% caucasian, average body weight 68.7 ± 13.1 kg and average BMI 28.5 ± 2.3 kg/m². MEASUREMENTS: Nutritional status was assessed based on the Body Mass Index (BMI). Data on food intake were obtained by applying the 24h diet recall method in three non-consecutive days, including Sunday. The assessment of antioxidant biomarkers was performed based on tests for total plasma thiols and phenolic compounds. The linear regression analysis was used to assess the effect of the consumption of food groups on antioxidant biomarkers. RESULTS: A positive association was found between thiols and intake of carotenoid-rich vegetables (p=0.03), oils, fats and oilseeds (p=0.03); a negative association was observed between total concentrations of phenolic compounds and intake of cereals (p=0.04). CONCLUSION: The intake of foods from the carotenoid-rich vegetables, oils, fats and oilseeds food groups increased the levels of plasma thiols, and the intake of foods from the group of cereals decreased the plasma concentration of phenols. Studies should be conducted to investigate the association between the intake of antioxidant-rich foods and the plasma antioxidant profile, as a way to protect against the aging process.

Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-producing K. pneumoniae is spreading globally and represents a challenge in infection control and treatment. Solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients are especially at risk for infection by multidrug-resistant bacteria, and little is known about infection with KPC-producing organisms in this setting. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical and microbiologic aspects of KPC-producing K. pneumoniae infections in SOT recipients. A KPC-2-producing K. pneumoniae outbreak was identified in a public teaching tertiary care hospital in São Paulo, Brazil, in June 2009. During the outbreak, cases of KPC-2-producing K. pneumoniae infection in SOT recipients occurred between July 2009 and February 2010; these cases were retrospectively reviewed. Overall, 12 episodes of infection with KPC-producing K. pneumoniae occurred in 2 heart, 4 liver, and 6 kidney transplant recipients with incidence rates of 16.7%, 12.9%, and 26.3% in heart, liver, and kidney transplantation, respectively. Infection occurred at a median time of 20 days after transplantation. Primary infection sites were as follows: 4 urinary tract infections, 4 bloodstream infections, 2 pneumonias, and 2 surgical site infections. All patients except one had received antibiotics in the last 30 days, mostly piperacillin-tazobactam or glycopeptides. All strains exhibited susceptibility to amikacin and gentamicin. Patients were treated with tigecycline plus polymyxin B (3 cases), polymyxin B plus carbapenem (3 cases), polymyxin B alone (3 cases), or tigecycline plus imipenem (1 case). In 2 cases, patients received only carbapenem, and death occurred before the final culture result. The overall 30-day mortality rate was 42%. In this series of KPC-producing K. pneumoniae infection in SOT recipients, the infection occurrence was high during an institutional outbreak and was potentially life threatening.

O coentro é a hortaliça mais utilizada como condimento na região de Mossoró-RN. Um experimento foi conduzido na Fazenda Experimental Rafael Fernandes da Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido - UFERSA, no período de maio a junho de 2010, com o objetivo de avaliar o rendimento de coentro sob diferentes quantidades da planta trepadeira jitirana, incorporada ao solo como adubo verde. O delineamento experimental usado foi o de blocos completos casualizados com sete tratamentos e três repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram da incorporação de sete quantidades de jitirana (3,0; 6,0; 9,0; 12,0; 15,0; 18,0 e 21,0 t ha-1 de matéria seca de jitirana). A cultivar de coentro plantado foi a Verdão. As características avaliadas foram: altura e número de hastes por planta, rendimento e massa seca da parte aérea. O melhor desempenho agronômico do coentro foi observado na quantidade de 21,0 t ha-1 de jitirana. Para cada tonelada de jitirana incorporada ao solo observa-se um rendimento de coentro de 395 kg ha-1.


The ciliandro is the vegetable more used as seasoning in the area at Mossoró-RN. An experiment was conducted at the Experimental Farm Rafael Fernandes of the Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido - UFERSA in the period from may to june 2010, with the objective of evaluating the coriander yield in under different amounts of plant clambering scarlet starglory, incorporated into the soil. The experimental design was randomized complete blocks with eight treatments and three replicates. The treatments were combinations of eight amounts of scarlet starglory (3.0; 6.0; 9.0; 12.0; 15.0; 18.0 and 21.0 t ha-1 dry matter). The coriander cultivar planted was Verdão. The characteristics evaluated in the coriander were: plant height and number of stalks per plant, yield and dry matter mass of shoots. The best agroconomic performance lettuce was observed in the amount of 21,0 t ha-1 scarlet starglory. For each fresh or dry scarlet starglory ton incorporated into the soil, it was observed a mean yield of coriander mass of 395 kg ha-1.

Ethanol (EtOH) is a drug widely consumed throughout the world that promotes several neurochemical disorders. Its deleterious effects are generally associated with modifications in oxidative stress parameters, signaling transduction pathways, and neurotransmitter systems, leading to distinct behavioral changes. Taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) is a ß-amino acid not incorporated into proteins found in mM range in the central nervous system (CNS). The actions of taurine as an inhibitory neurotransmitter, neuromodulator, and antioxidant make it attractive for studying a potential protective role against EtOH-mediated neurotoxicity. In this study, we investigated whether acute taurine cotreatment or pretreatment (1 h) prevent EtOH-induced changes in acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and in oxidative stress parameters in zebrafish brain. The results showed that EtOH exposure (1% in volume) during 1 h increased AChE activity, whereas the cotreatment with 400 mg·L(-1) taurine prevented this enhancement. A similar protective effect of 150 and 400 mg·L(-1) taurine was also observed when the animals were pretreated with this amino acid. Taurine treatments also prevented the alterations promoted in superoxide dismutase and catalase activities by EtOH, suggesting a modulatory role in enzymatic antioxidant defenses. The pretreatment with 150 and 400 mg·L(-1) taurine significantly increased the sulfydryl levels as compared to control and EtOH groups. Moreover, 150 and 400 mg·L(-1) taurine significantly decreased thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS) levels, but the cotreatment with EtOH plus 400 mg·L(-1) taurine did not prevent the EtOH-induced lipoperoxidation. In contrast, the pretreatment with 150 and 400 mg·L(-1) taurine prevented the TBARS increase besides decreased the basal levels of lipid peroxides. Altogether, our data showed for the first time that EtOH induced oxidative stress in adult zebrafish brain and reinforce the idea that this vertebrate is an attractive alternative model to evaluate the beneficial effect of taurine against acute EtOH exposure.

Laboratory tests were conducted to compare the effects of various concentrations of glyphosate and 2,4-D on earthworms (Eisenia foetida) cultured in Argissol during 56 days of incubation. The effects on earthworm growth, survival, and reproduction rates were verified for different exposure times. Earthworms kept in glyphosate-treated soil were classified as alive in all evaluations, but showed gradual and significant reduction in mean weight (50%) at all test concentrations. For 2,4-D, 100% mortality was observed in soil treated with 500 and 1,000 mg/kg. At 14 days, 30%-40% mortality levels were observed in all other concentrations. No cocoons or juveniles were found in soil treated with either herbicide. Glyphosate and 2,4-D demonstrated severe effects on the development and reproduction of Eisenia foetida in laboratory tests in the range of test concentrations.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of acute alcohol consumption and vitamin E co-treatment upon oxidative stress parameters in rats tongue. Thirty-eight, Wistar rats were separated into five groups (alcohol, alcohol/vitamin E, control, Tween, vitamin E). Alcohol and alcohol vitamin E groups had the standard diet, and 40% alcohol on drinking water. Other groups were fed with the same standard diet and water ad libitum. Vitamin E was given by gavage to vitamin E and alcohol/vitamin E rats twice a week. Alcohol and control groups were subjected to saline gavage and Tween group to 5% Tween 80 solution, the vitamin E vehicle. At day 14, the animals were anesthetized and specimens were obtained from tongue. Lipid peroxidation (TBARS), protein oxidative damage, catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were quantified. Alcohol group decreased TBARS in relation to control group and alcohol vitamin-treated animals decreased TBARS when compared to Tween and vitamin E groups. SOD activity was lower and CAT activity was higher in animals treated with both alcohol and vitamin E. These results suggest that short-term alcohol consumption decreases lipid peroxidation levels. Alternatively, alcohol/vitamin E group increased CAT, showing the toxicity of this association.
