Abstract The study was developed in order to collect information about knowledge on medicinal plant uses by students from some primary school classes located in a small community on the western shore of Lake Como (northern Italy). This information was compared with the one collected from the students' relatives and from other people they were in contact with, in order to evaluate differences and similarities between the children's and the adults' knowledge. Two workshops were led in each of the classes taking part in the project. The first one was performed to introduce our research and the topic of healing plants to the students. During the second workshop we asked the students to fill a survey focusing on which plant remedies they would use as medicines. In another phase of the project each child was given a new survey to be filled in at home while conducting the interviews with their relatives or other adults. Tremezzina children reported the use of 24 medicinal species; 78% of students listed at least one species but only 9% showed to know more than three species and uses. In total, adults reported 85 species in eighteen categories of use. Children listed eight species and eleven uses that were not reported by the adults, suggesting that some of the Tremezzina children's knowledge of the medicinal plants are specific to them. Both children and adults learned about the use of the medicinal plants mainly from their family; however, other sources of knowledge were also reported. Differences related to age and gender in both the informants' groups were also discussed. Our results provide valuable qualitative and quantitative data on the plants used for the medicinal purpose within the studied community.

RESUMEN

For the first time, CaV6O16·3H2O (CVO), synthesized via a highly efficient and fast microwave reaction, is used as a cathode material for aqueous zinc-ion batteries. Ex situ X-ray diffraction confirms the structure of this material to be stable upon reversible Zn2+ intercalation, due to its large interlayer distance (8.08 Å). The pillaring effect of calcium makes the as-prepared CVO an excellent Zn2+ cation host.

In binary ionic liquid/Li salt mixtures with the novel asymmetric anion FTFSI, electrophoretic mobility µi values of all ion species were determined using electrophoretic NMR. Li was determined to migrate in negatively charged Li-anion clusters towards the anode. This vehicular transport mechanism was shown to have decreasing relevance at elevated salt concentrations.

The use of highly concentrated ionic liquid-based electrolytes results in improved rate capability and capacity retention at 20 °C compared to Li+ -dilute systems in Li-metal and Li-ion cells. This work explores the connection between the bulk electrolyte properties and the molecular organization to provide insight into the concentration dependence of the Li+ transport mechanisms. Below 30 mol %, the Li+ -containing species are primarily smaller complexes (one Li+ cation) and the Li+ ion transport is mostly derived from the vehicular transport. Above 30 mol %, where the viscosity is substantially higher and the conductivity lower, the Li+ -containing species are a mix of small and large complexes (one and more than one Li+ cation, respectively). The overall conduction mechanism likely changes to favor structural diffusion through the exchange of anions in the first Li+ solvation shell. The good rate performance is likely directly influenced by the presence of larger Li+ complexes, which promote Li+ -ion transport (as opposed to Li+ -complex transport) and increase the Li+ availability at the electrode.

In this paper, we investigate via experimental and simulation techniques the transport properties, in terms of total ionic conductivity and ion diffusion coefficients, of ionic liquids doped with lithium salts. They are composed of two anions, bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (FSI) and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI), and two cations, N-ethyl-N-methylimidazolium (emim) and lithium ions. The comparison of the experimental results with the simulations shows very good agreement over a wide temperature range and a broad range of compositions. The addition of TFSI gives rise to the formation of lithium dimers (Li(+)-TFSI(-)-Li(+)). A closer analysis of such dimers shows that involved lithium ions move nearly as fast as single lithium ions, although they have a different coordination and much slower TFSI exchange rates.

AIMS: To evaluate the relationship between oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction (ED) in diabetic patients without clinical macrovascular complications. METHODS: In 27 type 1, 56 type 2 diabetic patients and 35 healthy controls the redox state (GSH, GSSG; enzymatic method), endothelin-1 (ET-1; ELISA) and von Willebrand factor (vWF; ELISA) plasma levels, urinary vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF; ELISA) were measured. RESULTS: Decreased GSH levels (p<0.05, type 1 and type 2), GSH/GSSG ratio (p<0.05 type 1, p<0.001 type 2) and elevated vWF levels (p<0.001, type 1 and type 2) were observed in diabetic patients in comparison with controls. A negative correlation between GSH and vWF (p<0.02 and p<0.001, in type 1 and type 2, respectively) and GSH and BMI (p<0.02 in type 1 and type 2) was observed. ET-1 was positively correlated to age (p<0.05) and diabetes duration (p<0.03) in type 1, while vWF was correlated to systolic blood pressure (p<0.05) in type 2 diabetic patients. Urinary VEGF was higher in type 2 (p<0.05) in comparison with type 1 diabetic patients and was correlated to glycemia (p<0.05) and systolic blood pressure (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: These data might indicate that markers of oxidative stress and ED are altered in diabetic patients without clinical macrovascular complications.

The epidemiological finding of an increased risk of dementia in patients with diabetes mellitus has raised the hypothesis that a dysfunction of the insulin receptors plays a role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). A possible link is suggested by the evidence that the insulin-stimulated phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI-3-K)/phospho-Akt pathway negatively controls the glycogen synthase kinase-3beta. The activation of this enzyme mediates the hyperphosphorylation of the tau protein, a relevant step in the formation of the neurofibrillary tangles associated with AD. We hypothesized that the neurodegeneration associated with AD is related to an impairment of the intracellular signalling stimulated by insulin receptors. To test this hypothesis we assessed the PI-3-K/phospho-Akt pathway following in-vitro challenge with insulin in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from subjects with AD (n = 20) and controls (n = 20). We found that the stimulation of PI-3-K is blunted in patients with AD with respect to control. The reduction did not correlate with the extent of cognitive decline or with scores at neuropsychological tests exploring attention, memory, language or visuospatial abilities. The study supports the hypothesis that an impaired control of glycogen synthase kinase-3beta activity by insulin receptor-mediated signalling plays a role in the pathogenesis of AD, facilitating tau protein phosphorylation and neurofibrillary tangle formation.

Patients affected by diabetes mellitus have oxidative stress with an impaired glutathione (GSH) redox state. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of insulin on oxidative stress, defined as a reduced intracellular GSH/GSH disulfide (GSSG) ratio and lipid peroxidation by plasma thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARSs) in patients with type 2 diabetes. Two experimental interventions were used: (1) measurement of GSH/GSSG ratio after insulin incubation in erythrocytes from 10 type 2 diabetic patients, and (2) measurement of intraerythrocytic GSH/GSSG ratio and plasma TBARS in 14 type 2 diabetic patients during an in vivo hyperinsulinemic condition obtained from a euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp study. We confirmed that our patients underwent oxidative stress as shown by the significant difference in intracellular GSH/GSSG ratio in diabetic patients as compared to controls (13.56+/-3.84 vs 27.89+/-8.37, P<.0001). We found a significant elevation in the GSH/GSSG ratio after 2 hours of incubation with insulin in erythrocytes from diabetic patients (11.56+/-1.98 to 15.61+/-2.62, P<.001). During the clamp studies, GSH/GSSG ratio had already increased after 60 minutes and even more after 120 minutes (baseline, 15.04+/-4.19; at 60 minutes, 19.74+/-6.33; at 120 minutes, 25.33+/-11.15; P<.0001). On the contrary, no significant changes were observed in plasma TBARS (3.59+/-0.77 to 3.56+/-0.83, NS). We conclude that insulin in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus can reduce intracellular oxidative stress through increased GSH/GSSG ratio.
