RESUMEN

Short-pulse high-peak-power lasers are crucial laser sources for various applications such as non-thermal ultrafine material processing and eye-safe high-resolution remote sensing. Realizing such operation in a single semiconductor laser chip without amplifiers or external resonators is expected to contribute to the development of compact, affordable laser sources for such applications. In this paper, we demonstrate short-pulse high-peak-power photonic-crystal surface-emitting lasers based on simultaneous absorptive and radiative Q-switching. The proposed device induces an instantaneous and simultaneous decrease in both absorptive and out-of-plane radiation losses due to saturable absorption and self-evolution of the photonic band, respectively, which results in drastic Q-switching operation of the device. Based on this concept, we experimentally demonstrate short-pulse generation with 200-W-class peak power and a pulse width of < 30 ps. In addition, via pulse compression with dispersion compensation, we achieve an even higher peak power of ∼300 W with a shorter pulse width of ∼10 ps.

Ultrafast dynamics in nanophotonic materials is attracting increasing attention from the perspective of exploring new physics in fundamental science and expanding functionalities in various photonic devices. In general, such dynamics is induced by external stimuli such as optical pumping or voltage application, which becomes more difficult as the optical power to be controlled becomes larger owing to the increase in the energy required for the external control. Here, we demonstrate a concept of the self-evolving photonic crystal, where the spatial profile of the photonic band is dynamically changed through carrier-photon interactions only by injecting continuous uniform current. Based on this concept, we experimentally demonstrate short-pulse generation with a high peak power of 80 W and a pulse width of <30 ps in a 1-mm-diameter GaAs-based photonic crystal. Our findings on self-evolving carrier-photon dynamics will greatly expand the potential of nanophotonic materials and will open up various scientific and industrial applications.

INTRODUCTION: The effects of low-dose alcohol consumption on colorectal cancer development are not well understood. Epidemiological studies have reported that people who consume small amounts of alcohol have lower mortality rates than both nondrinkers and heavy drinkers. This phenomenon has been labeled the "J-curve effect" of alcohol. This study examined the effects of low-dose alcohol (0.5%, 1%, and 2%) on tumor growth in a transplant colon cancer model. METHODS: BALB/c and BALB/c nude mice were used to analyze T-cell immunity. Syngeneic CT26 murine colon cancer cells were implanted into the cecal wall, and the resulting T-cell immune effects were monitored. RESULTS: The growth of orthotopic tumors was markedly inhibited upon ingestion of low-dose (0.5%) alcohol compared with that in the control mice. In contrast, cells from the same line were injected into the cecal wall of nude mice, and tumor growth inhibition was not observed. Histopathological and RNA sequence analyses were performed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying tumor growth inhibition. An increase in tumor CD8+ T lymphocytes and changes in cytokine levels were observed. Microbiome analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequencing of cecal contents was performed and revealed Mucispirillum schaedleri and Clostridium cocleatum showed decreased and increased abundance, respectively, in the alcohol group. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Ingesting a threshold amount of alcohol results in the infiltration of T lymphocytes, which may enhance immune responsiveness in mouse colorectal cancer models.

Dietary fiber has high functional value in relation to gut flora. We searched for a high-lysine mutant of the most popular rice cultivar in Japan, 'Koshihikari', as a route to a higher dietary fiber content like a success case in new barley cultivar, 'Beau-fiber'. We found several promising high-lysine mutants with high dietary fiber content. One of these, 'WFE5', has three times the dietary fiber content in white rice. Two rounds of backcrossing to Koshihikari produced a near-isogenic line with a high fiber content. The line's agronomic traits were close to those of Koshihikari except for yield and eating quality. As these two traits are critical, we discuss how to improve them.

MXene, a family of layered compounds consisting of nanosheets, is emerging as an electrode material for various electrochemical energy storage devices including supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries, and sodium-ion batteries. However, the mechanism of its electrochemical reaction is not yet fully understood. Herein, using solid-state (23)Na magic angle spinning NMR and density functional theory calculation, we reveal that MXene Ti3C2Tx in a nonaqueous Na(+) electrolyte exhibits reversible Na(+) intercalation/deintercalation into the interlayer space. Detailed analyses demonstrate that Ti3C2Tx undergoes expansion of the interlayer distance during the first sodiation, whereby desolvated Na(+) is intercalated/deintercalated reversibly. The interlayer distance is maintained during the whole sodiation/desodiation process due to the pillaring effect of trapped Na(+) and the swelling effect of penetrated solvent molecules between the Ti3C2Tx sheets. Since Na(+) intercalation/deintercalation during the electrochemical reaction is not accompanied by any substantial structural change, Ti3C2Tx shows good capacity retention over 100 cycles as well as excellent rate capability.
