RESUMEN

The sheared-flow-stabilized Z pinch concept has been studied extensively and is able to produce fusion-relevant plasma parameters along with neutron production over several microseconds. We present here elevated electron temperature results spatially and temporally coincident with the plasma neutron source. An optical Thomson scattering apparatus designed for the FuZE device measures temperatures in the range of 1-3 keV on the axis of the device, 20 cm downstream of the nose cone. The 17-fiber system measures the radial profiles of the electron temperature. Scanning the laser time with respect to the neutron pulse time over a series of discharges allows the reconstruction of the T_{e} temporal response, confirming that the electron temperature peaks simultaneously with the neutron output, as well as the pinch current and inductive voltage generated within the plasma. Comparison to spectroscopic ion temperature measurements suggests a plasma in thermal equilibrium. The elevated T_{e} confirms the presence of a plasma assembled on axis, and indicates limited radiative losses, demonstrating a basis for scaling this device toward net gain fusion conditions.

RESUMEN

A beam emission spectroscopy system is being developed and deployed on the HL-2A tokamak to measure local low wavenumber (k ⊥ ρ i < 1) density fluctuations by measuring the Doppler-shifted emission from a 50 kV deuterium heating neutral beam. High spatial resolution (Δr ≤ 1 cm, Δz ≤ 1.5 cm) measurements are achieved with customized in-vacuum optics. High frequency, high-gain preamplifiers sample the light intensity at a Nyquist frequency of 1 MHz and achieve a high S/N ratio via high optical throughput, low-noise preamplifiers, and high quantum efficiency photodiodes. A first set of 16 detector channels [configured in an 8 (radial) × 2 (poloidal) array] has been installed and tested at HL-2A, covering the radial range r/a = 0.8-1.1. The frequency and wavenumber spectra have been measured under different plasma conditions. Initial measurements have demonstrated the capability of measuring edge plasma density fluctuation spectra and the poloidal flow velocity fields with a high S/N ratio.

RESUMEN

The Thomson scattering diagnostic on MST records both equilibrium and fluctuating electron temperature with a range capability of 10 eV-5 keV. Standard operation with two modified commercial Nd:YAG lasers allows measurements at rates of 1 kHz-25 kHz. Several subsystems of the diagnostic are being improved. The power supplies for the avalanche photodiode detectors (APDs) that record the scattered light are being replaced to improve usability, reliability, and maintainability. Each of the 144 APDs will have an individual rack mounted switching supply, with bias voltage adjustable to match the APD. Long-wavelength filters (1140 nm center, 80 nm bandwidth) have been added to the polychromators to improve capability to resolve non-Maxwellian distributions and to enable directed electron flow measurements. A supercontinuum (SC) pulsed white light source has replaced the tungsten halogen lamp previously used for spectral calibration of the polychromators. The SC source combines substantial brightness produced in nanosecond pulses with a spectrum that covers the entire range of the polychromators.

RESUMEN

The Thomson scattering diagnostic on the Madison Symmetric Torus (MST) records excessive levels of stray Nd:YAG laser light. Stray light saturates the 1064 nm spectral channel in all polychromators, which prevents absolute electron density measurements via Rayleigh scattering calibration. Furthermore, stray light contaminates adjacent spectral channels for r/a ≥ 0.75, which renders the diagnostic unable to make electron temperature measurements at these radii. In situ measurements of stray light levels during a vacuum vessel vent are used to identify stray light sources and strategies for reduction of stray light levels. Numerical modeling using Zemax OpticStudio supports these measurements. The model of the vacuum vessel and diagnostic includes synthetic collection optics to enable direct comparison of measured and simulated stray light levels. Modeling produces qualitatively similar stray light distributions to MST measurements, and quantifies the mitigation effects of stray light mitigation strategies prior to implementation.

RESUMEN

Calibration of the Madison Symmetric Torus Thomson scattering system has been refined to improve temperature fluctuation measurements. Multiple avalanche photodiodes have been directly calibrated for use as reference detectors during calibration, improving accuracy and ease of use. From the absolute calibration we calculate corrections to the gain for variation in detector operating temperature. We also measure the spatial uniformity of detector responsivity for several photodiodes, and present a method of accounting for non-uniformity in the calibration process. Finally, the gain and noise enhancement are measured at multiple wavelengths to improve temperature and uncertainty measurements.

RESUMEN

Data from bipolar I old-order Amish families suggest that the morbid risk of illness is not significantly different in this population when compared with estimates of risk from previous studies. The age-corrected rates of bipolar I, bipolar II, and major depressive disorder among first-degree relatives are 8.7, 3.7, and 11.6, respectively. Risk of illness is not significantly different among male and female relatives and among relatives of male and female probands. Consistent with other reports, the rate of illness is higher among relatives of probands with early-onset disease. In contrast with previous reports, there does not appear to be a cohort effect in this population.

RESUMEN

Evaluation of a family in which electrophoretic variants of the eznyme galactose-1-phosphate uridyl transferase (GALT) and 9qh variants occur demonstrates close linkage between these two traits: lod score of 3.67 at theta = 0. Taken with information indicating GALT is on the short arm of chromosome 9, these linkage data suggest that this locus is close to the centromere on the short arm of chromosome 9.

RESUMEN

Three pedigrees were selected from the literature for their compatibility with the hypothesis of linkage between the X-chromosome marker color blindness and bipolar affective disorder. We compared the results of linkage analyses of these pedigrees when both penetrance function and diagnostic classification were varied. The analyses show that the incorporation of age-of-onset information into a penetrance function significantly increased the evidence for linkage. In addition, assumptions about diagnostic classification affected the lod scores. These results demonstrate the need for careful consideration of diagnostic criteria and variable age-of-onset when pursuing linkage analysis of complex traits.
