RESUMEN

Prolongation of life is an important public health goal as long as there is an emphasis on the quality of life (QoL) and independent living. Diminishing abilities to ambulate and participate in activities of daily living point to a serious decline in functional health, increasing the risk of institutionalization and death. In our work we found a pattern of factors associated with disability, especially cognitive impairment, as well as stroke, physical activity and performance, reading, and the nutritional biomarkers, blood albumin and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). The attention to this cluster of markers, suggesting multidimensional prevention, may have unexpected good effects against disability.

RESUMEN

Papillomavirus infection in women is associated with the development of carcinoma or squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL). Limited information is available for men. Seventy asymptomatic male partners of HPV-DNA positive women were studied. Exfoliated cells collected using urethral swabs urine and semen were examined for HPV-DNA using Dot blot and PCR. On exfoliated cells collected using a urethral swab, 89% of the samples were inadequate on Dot blot, and 87% on PCR respectively. Using urine, 36% turned out to be inadequate on Dot blot, 21% on PCR. Using semen all of the 70 samples were satisfactory for both systems. Semen is thus the best material for analysis. The occurrence of HPV-DNA in urine in urine is less frequent than that in semen. Urethral swabs seem to represent the least reliable material. Carriage of human papillomaviruses is frequent in apparently healthy parternrs of HPV infected women.

RESUMEN

The Authors have correlated 39 cervical diagnostic biopsies for squamous intraepithelial lesions (SILs) with correspective Papanicolau smears (PS), with relation to the presence or the absence of HPV of oncogenic type (HPV-one) detected by in situ hybridization (ISH). Agreement between cytological and histological diagnosis was present in 14 of 16 cases with detectable HPV-one and only in 12 of 23 cases without detectable HPV-one at ISH. The importance of the HPV type in the SILs with relation to the diagnostic accuracy of Papanicolaou smears has been discussed.
